Hi Margaret
I am think that we may have a family connection. My Great Grandfather Henry James Delatouche fennell Croker is the brother of Julia florence (Fennell) Croker. Julia parents were John Croker 1844-1913 and Eliza Jane Puddy 1850-???. Julia was part of a very large family of thirteen brothers and sisters (some which died in infantcy). I think that my mum remembers your grandmother. I will have to ask her for any information. The name Tom Tennear is also familier to me through my mum.

Kind Regards
Amanda

My great, great grandmother was MaryAnn (or Mariah Croker) b.1826. I have found her marriage to Thomas Laffan in 1842 records from Quebec, church of St Roch on Ancestry. Her father is listed as John Croker and her mother as Ann Ryan. His parents were James Laffan and Mary Ryan. I can trace them to Wisconsin in the 1850 census, they left Canada abt 1849.The census states they were both born in Ireland. I also found Thomas'intent for citizenship papers stating he left the county of Limerick.I also have census records for 1860-1900

I'm hoping that someone will contact me with any knowledge of these people, or suggestions about what else I could do to find more on them.
Hey Susan,
I'm retired from the FDNY, working on a website which will include the history of the job, and I'd love to talk to you about your great-grandfather Edward Croker. I want to memorialize all the men we've lost over the years, and document as much of the history of the job and the men who've served, and I think having family members contribute memories or comments would be a very nice addition to it. If you're interested, you can contact me here through ancestry, or try my cell at 845-590-7992. The website won't be up for another six months or so, lots of work and research to do for it, but your input would be welcome.
My best,
Tom McLoughlin

It seems this thread ended ages ago but Robert Croker was supposed to be born in about 1859 (December?) and he had a son Robert Croker born in 1884. Both are supposed to have been born in Cork, Ireland and later lived in Portsmouth.
Robert Croker was a policeman and his son Robert was a stoker on a dredger (sp.)
The son married in 1907 to Dora Quartermain and they married in Portsmouth. I know he went to jail later and Dora divorced him and came to Australia with her surviving children.

I haven't any idea who Robert Snr married and what happened to his son. Robert Croker Snr lived in Portsmouth and probably died there but I can't find any information about deaths etc.
Does anyone have any information?
Hi Jenny,

I am also a descendant of Ann and William Davis, via Margaret, then Louisa and hence the Sligars.

In the end this is a question for all the people with trees on here that say Ann was born 1844 to John and Anne Berrell, but I am having problems finding a source for Ann's birth in 1844 to John and Anne. And I know this sounds trivial but I dont want to continue with the tree back to much further (or get too excited) without confirmation. The only Ann Croker I can find of NSW BDM is born 1836 to Charles and Susan.

Is there something blindingly obvious I am missing here?? I have tonight ordered William and Anns marriage certificate hoping that her parents will be listed and I can get confirmation.

George,

Off the top of my head I don't recall seeing anything about Michael. However, there's a book about The Boss called Master of Manhattan. I have an old copy and understand it was sort of a vanity press biography (they glossed over his likely stabbing of someone), but if Matthew was his aide, he might have been mentioned. I'm sure it's out of copyright, so you might search for it and see if anyone's digitized it.

Best,

Bob..

Hello there. This is what Joelene and I know about Thomas Croker. He was born on May 18, 1912 and died in December of 1974. He was a WW2 veteran and the husband of Rita Sheedy who died before him. They had one child name Louis who lived as of 1974 in Roselle NJ. He had two sisters at least to our knowledge. One was named Kitty Czuba and the other was Mrs. Bernard Kirkpatrick. Any help would be great.
Thanks

Samuel croker second wife was jane Ann Muffett.

Old Numby is another book involving Croker.

Croker family History, there are 3 of note in the Crookwell FHS archive worth a looksee.

Cheers

Steven

Hello Steven, I have been following this Croker conversation and am very interested. You replied to a message I posted back in 2009. I am not the author of the biography you mention but would love to know more about it.
I am a descendant of John Croker and Anne Berrell, and their daughter Ann Croker who married William Davis.
My email address is jj@jolliffesoutback.com so we can exchange information as there is obviously lots you can help me with as I know Ann Berrell's story but not how John Croker arrived or where he originated except for Devon which I have on his death certificate.I don't know his siblings apart from a sister Mary Anne.
I really look forward to hearing from you. I have been out of contact for quite a long time due to family problems so haven't been online for about a year, anyway I am back on the trail again.
Hi Jennifer

Just picked up on this message board and have already touched base with fellow historians.

If I may ask,are you the author of the Life and Times of Thomas David Croker 1902-1972. A very good research outcome/output. I was lucky to have a quick look in the FHS section of Crookwell Library from their sanctum sanctotum. Special collections.

If you are then I would have a few questions for you.

A bit of background first. I am doing, amonst other things, a couple of research projects for friends of mine. One is a bona fide Croker and I can trace her lineage back to 1640 in Devon. They came out to OZ in 1841 and settled initially in Windellama. You mentioned John Croker (son of John C. and Elizabeth Cutten)and Ann Berrell which is back in time from Samuel Croker 1835 and Mary Ann Scott. John Croker/Ann was Samuel's Uncle. These I call my Devon Crokers.

The other project for a friend who is married into the Croker family I have also traced back to about 1640, this time in Dorset. So you have the George Croker and Barbara Whitrow line arriving OZ in 1839. These I call my Dorset Crokers

As both groups settled in the Gouburn District, it is possible that there is a connection somewhere in time and space/place.

The data/info I have for each group I am still expanding. 250+ for each group after only a few weeks.

Any ideas.

I thought my surname was a revelation in research but Croker takes the cake - an amazing journey

Regards

Steven Montgomery
Crookwell

G'day Chris

Yes some of OZ did come here of a free spirit and not ball and chain.

It was John James Croker and wife Dinah Vale and their 4 kids Mary Anne, John James and Samuel that came here arriving Sydney aboard vessel Lysander 22 Oct 1841. At a place called Windellama near Goulburn which is south of Sydney and north of canberra.

Big families were all the rage then even without social security. A family of ten with each of those ten having 10 kids gives the family historian something to do and burn the midnight oil.

I have all this on FTM

Of interest to you might be these are what I call the Devin Croker connection. There is also another lot of ex-UK who I call Dorset Crokers who came out at the same time. who settled in the Goulburn area. I have yet to find connection between the two. The Dorset Crokers changed their name from Crocker to Croker with migration.

Our Montgomery line is from Rotherham, Yorkshire, England

I am just doing the Croker history for friends of mine.

Happy hunting

Regards

steven
Crookwell NSW Aust
Hi - I am looking for any information about a Catherine Croker who I believe to have been born in Ireland (abt 1900). She was living and working in the Liverpool England area in 1923. She gave birth to Veronica Croker on May 28, 1923. Veronica (my grandmother) was given up for adoption to the Wilkinson's who from the information we have were a friend or neighbor who still have a living son in the area.

My family and I know very little of my grandmother's birth mother, or her family but would love to know more.

Anyone have any information? I would be greatfully appreciative of any help!!
Thanks,
Nicole

Sandra

Your Crokers were originally from Dorset. I have been researching for a Croker friend of mine and hold it on FTM 2009.

I have traced them back to 1640. Though they were originally Crocker and changed it to Croker when George and barbara came out in 1839. My Dorset croker tree is about 250 individuals and still growing-as they do- very fertile soil in Crookwell.

I specifically have the Croker family from George and Barbara

Mary J married Bill Jones

These Croker were concentrated in the Golspie/Fullerton area nr Crookwell

FYI there is a Devon Croker lineage in the Goulburn/Crookwell area as well. I have these back to 1640as well, Thereis a public folder in Ancestry of mine known as Croker (current date)

Steven

Crookwell

Thanks for your reply . I would love to see the photo you mention. Margaret "Granny"Croker died one week before my mum, Eva Croker was born. She must have been a lovely lady, as my mum has always had fond stories of Granny, so much so that , on becoming a grandmother herself, my mum also took on the name "Granny"for her grandchildren. I have a copy of the family tree that Jennifer Croker (my Aunt)has researched, including details of both Nathaniel and Margaret's parents: George Croker, Barbara Whiterow, David Toole and Maria Locke.
