Hi Sam
I am Alison Openshaw(nee Gregory) and I am the grand daughter of Rosalind Crosse who was the sister of your great grandfather who went to Australia. I presume you have seen our family tree as I see Ian Kelly has been in touch with you. Unfortunately my tree is on Genes Reunited.
I have recently been to Keswick in the Lake District and seen the house where Walter grew up and visited his parents graves in the churchyard. Would you like any photos of them?
I remember Norma when she visited the UK when I was a girl (I'm now 68!) I hope she is well. My mother used to write to her about the family history and I think Norma mentioned the portrait. My mother died 8 years ago.
I am glad you are interested in your ancestors and that you are a Walter Crosse!
Best wishes
Alison
My Grandfather Walter Henry Burnham Crosse died when I was quite young. He was an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist at a hospital in Brisbane. Funny enough I went to a hospital last year to get an ear checked and the young doctor knew of Winkie (Walter Henry) and he was quite a ledgend that pioneered quite a few proceedures in the 60s and 70s.

My Grandmother Norma Crosse is still alive, and in her 90s. She lives in Brisbane.

Norma's daughter lives in Bristol with 2 sons and a daughter, and her husband.

My father (Walter Clive Crosse) was a concrete pumper, and has been semi retired since he was in his 40s.

I am an electronic design engineer in Brisbane, and have a son with someone I am no longer with. He is Seth Kyle Cole and is 10yo.
I am married to Lauren Crosse (nee Oberhardt from germany). Lauren seems to think that Crosse is a French surname. I thought I was the last Crosse.

My parents gave me a large portrait of someone from 1836, but no one knows who he is, and that is what motivated me to research the tree.
My sister Rebecca Amarant (nee Crosse) has 2 daughters and lives on Springbrooke Mountain (Gold Coast, Australia).
I have never been to UK.
I have compiled a XLS spreadsheet

sam_kaos at hot mail

Dear Walter,
my name is Ian Kelly, my maternal grandmother was Mary Emma Crosse (1907) and we are 'Fourth Cousins One Generation Removed'. Our nearest common ancestor is the Walter Crosse who was christened on 12 Apr 1815 in St Mary's Church, Ellesmere, Shropshire.

By quirk of fate, we moved to Ellesmere (a small market town) 9 years ago, with no idea of any family connection. I am now a bell-ringer at our ancestors' church. To make matters more curious, our farm is in a rural area a mile from town called 'The Cross'. The farm at the end of our drive used to be called Cross Farm and many farms are named after the owners.

I have not yet made a connection between 'The Cross' and our Crosse family and I think the name of the locality is just a coincidence. I have traced our Crosse family to Whitchurch prior to them moving to Ellesmere and have not found any to be living at The Cross (the locality only consists of about 3 houses abeit some have had several families living in them concurrently).

The earliest Ellesmere date that I've found for our Crosse family is a marriage of Andrew Crosse to Elizabeth Ann Beetenson in 1808. She died and he re-married Martha Broughall in 1811. The White Hart Inn that they ran is still open and is the oldest continously-running pub in Shropshire.

Ian@BirchHill.co.uk

The only Samuel Victor I have was born in 1911 and he was the brother to Yvonne who was born in Paris and they're my second cousins twice removed.

I have birth and marriage certificates together with census returns to back up my line but, as you are well aware, certificates and census returns are only as good as the informant.

I was speculating about Thomas, not saying it was a definite fact. My Samuel was the son of Edward so we're clearly talking about two different families here.

If I didn't reply to a response, it would be because I never saw it.

I was hoping to find someone on the same line as mine because I could have done with some help since this is quite a difficult family to trace.

Ah, then I’m sure you’d agree about how much research it takes, and I hope you see I mean no disrespect. I am one of a team of researchers from five different countries who have worked together on the Massey Crosse line. Samuel Massey Crosse’s father was also named Samuel, and we know this from SMC’s marriage certificate, the record of his baptism, his father’s will, census returns, the pedigree compiled by the Royal College of Arms, and by no means least, the family record begun by SMC’s great-grandfather and passed down the family to SMC’s current descendants. All these documents corroborate who was SMC's father, and where he was born. Samuel senior did not have a brother named Thomas. There was a Thomas in the generation previous to Samuel senior, but that Thomas died in infancy. I did ask you to kindly contact me directly, and an explanation of your connection to the family would still be appreciated. A family member responded to one of your queries more than three years ago, you did not reply. I wish you well.

Hi Charani,
Thanks for your detailed post, most of which is correct and holds up to the intensive research conducted on the family line in the last seven years or so, a couple of the things you've stated are up the wrong garden path. If you would like to discuss this family further please contact me on my direct email address (this is given in other posts I have made on the Crosse message board). I can see where your interest lies in the Massey-Crosse family, but please let me know what your connection is to this line.
Kind regards,
Rebecca

The Victor Massey CROSSE in Bristol was the son of Samuel Massey CROSSE and Caroline Amelia, born the March qtr of 1856 in the Kensington registration district (RD) of London. He isn't the same one you have born in New Zealand in 1879.

Samuel was born abt 1821 in, he says, Terrington, Cambridgeshire, son of Thomas and Elizabeth CROSSE. He married Caroline Amelia CHEVIN in the March qtr of 1842 in the Marylebone (London) RD.

Samuel and Amelia's eldest son was Samuel Massey CROSSE, b Dec qtr of 1843 in the Leeds (Yorkshire) RD. He died in the Sept qtr of 1877 in Lambeth (Surrey) RD at the age of 31. He seems to have married Emma HARDY in 1871 in the Holbeach (Lincolnshire) RD.

Samuel and Caroline Amelia didn't have a son named Samuel Victor. Their son Samuel isn't the same one you have as Samuel Victor.

However, Samuel's father, Thomas, may have had brothers one of whom might also have been Samuel. Alternatively Thomas may have had a nephew called Samuel who did emigrate to Australia.

Samuel and Caroline's son, Victor (b 1856) did have a son, Samuel Victor but he wasn't born until 1911 so not the one you have.

Bio: Asahael Allen Crosse

From "The Biographical Encyclopedia of Ohio of the Nineteenth Century" [Galaxy Publishing Co., Columbus, OH, 1876]:

ASAHAEL ALLEN CROSSE, Physician and Surgeon, was born at Cincinnatus, Cortland county, New York, on the 22d of August, 1824. His parents were in moderate circumstances, and he early learned the lesson of self-dependence and self-help. At the age of thirteen years he left home to make his own way in the world, and henceforth relied entirely upon his own resources. He went to work on a farm, and such school education as he obtained was by going to a district school during the winter months, his summers being too much occupied in farm labor to give him any opportunity for summer study. Not long after leaving home he went to Ashtabula, Ohio, and there, in addition to the opportunities afforded by the district schools, he for a time enjoyed the advantage of attending the Ashtabula Academy. From thence he removed to Mentor, Lake county, Ohio, where, at the age of sixteen, he commenced the study of medicine. After having attended three full courses of medical lectures he graduated at the Willoughby University, in Lake county, Ohio, in the year 1842, and went at once to Amherst, Lorain county, Ohio. He had, when he arrived in Amherst, fifty dollars, and on the day after his arrival he made the uncomfortable discovery that forty-six dollars of his little fortune consisted of bills of a bank known as the Ohio Railroad Bank, located at Cleveland, Ohio, which had failed the day before, and were perfectly worthless, so that his available assets amounted to just four dollars. Fortune was not stubborn against him, however, for almost immediately he formed a partnership with Dr. Luman Tenny, an old physician of the place, and so was introduced to a practice that speedily became large and lucrative. His partner died at the end of three years, and then he took the entire charge of the practice. His diligence, ability and skill, added to the high reputation he had already earned, made him well known as one of the most successful physicians in the county. As a citizen, no less than as a physician, is he appreciated in the community, and from time to time that appreciation has been shown by placing him in several of the elective offices of the township of Amherst. He has successively held the offices of Township Assessor, Township Clerk, Justice of the Peace, and was the first Mayor of the incorporated village of North Amherst. He was Postmaster of Amherst during President Johnson's administration. Politically he is a Democrat, and, although the requirements of his profession do not leave him much leisure to devote to politics, he is nevertheless one of the leading spirits of his party in the community where he lives. Although he has acquired a fair competence, his experience has not been one of unmingled prosperity. On the 1st of March, 1858, he was thrown from his carriage, and his right leg was broken at the ankle. Being a heavy man, the ends of the broken bones were forced through the skin and boot-leg, and were driven three or four inches into the ground by the violence of his fall. It was found impossible to save the limb, and it was amputated below the knee by Professor Horace A. Ackley, his former preceptor. He has been three times married. His first wife, Diantha Walker, he married in 1844, by whom he had four children, three daughters and one son, one of whom, Mrs. H. W. Barnard, is now living. His wife, Diantha, died in 1855. On the 16th of September, 1859, he married Sarah E. Post, by whom he had one son, now living. His second wife died in 1866, and on the 18th of November, 1875, he married Ella G. Pelton, of Vermillion, Ohio. The doctor has a vigorous constitution, and from present appearances he has from twenty to twenty-five years of good practice left in him yet; that is, he is hale and hearty, and the youngest in the community always find him a pleasant social companion.

=====================

Not related to the subject. Just passing this on.
I'm also interested in a MASSEY-CROSSE family in Bristol (England) but am getting nowhere fast with them.

My particular interest is Yvonne who was born in 1905, married in 1929 and died in 1959. I believe she may have been a sibling to Cecilia Gertrude (b 1908) and Samuel Victor (b 1911). Samuel married in Derbyshire (England) in 1941 and there is a son (still living) born to the marriage.

I've also found a Clement who was born in "North London" and, at the time he joined the Territorial Force in 1909, he was living in Whiteladies Road, Bristol (England). He was a dental student working for Mr MASSEY-CROSSE. He left the force in 1910 to emigrate to South Africa. More than that I don't know but there seems to be a very good chance he was the son of Victor MASSEY-CROSSE (b 1856, London).

Any help sorting out Yvonne's family would be much appreciated. I believe Victor may have been her grandfather especially as she had a son Victor.

charani.b (at) gmail (dot) com (please remove spaces and replace words with relevant symbols to reply direct)
I'm looking for various MASSEY-CROSSE family members, esp those born, married or died in Bristol (England).

FreeBMD and Ancestry haven't produced many results between them.

This family was very mobile and the double barrelled surname doesn't help either.

It apparently started, as many such names did, as CROSSE and MASSEY was added as a second given name, eventually becoming double barrelled.

I'm getting nowhere fast with this family.

Hi Alys,

In my family tree I have a Rachel ROSE who married a Samuel Victor CROSSE (known as Victor CROSSE), a dentist, in South Australia. This 'Victor' was the son of Samuel Massey CROSS, who was a descendant of an Edward CROSS (b1729 - d1765) who married Sarah MASSEY. Rachel and 'Victor' went to New Zealand in the 1870's/1880's, but I'm still trying to work out what became of them. Would love to hear from you - email me back at rebecca@selectricity.com. Thanks.

Andrew Crosse {I think] was my 4x great grandfathers
brother their parents were Thomas and Ann and they had approx12 children They originated in Whitchurch Shropshire
If you go onto the 1881 census you will be able to find the marriage of Andrew Crosse to Martha Broughall in 1811
they had 3 children Walter ,Edward and Mary. I am going to Whitchurch in April to try and find out more. If I find more info
Ill pass it on. We must be very distant relatives.!.
To Jan
