Thank you so much for the information--I'm definitely interested. I pulled most of my info from various online sources (both a blessing and a curse), quite a bit of my info from FindAGrave and by following the related links for the Crowell family. See Jerusha's lovely gravestone (East Smithfield Cemetery where their son Hezekiah is also buried) at the following url and the associated info for her husband Samuel-1742 (which must be incorrect) and their son Samuel's-1773 and his wife Clarissa's gravestones. I have to say I did wonder about the Novia Scotia location popping up.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=44...

Have been busy trying to fill in census data where I can on this line. Will have to see if I can find Levi Crowell's 1903 book.

Now the question arises: Do you show Samuel's-1742 parents Jonathan and Ann Nickerson Crowell as buried in Congregational Church Burial Grounds, Liverpool, Nova Scotia, along with their daughter Elizabeth Crowell Bearse and her husband Joseph Bearse? There are no photos of gravestones on FindAGrave for them, just text.

Last question: Do you have info on Samuel-1773 and Clarissa Ackley Crowell's children?

Thank you again,
Jan LaBorde Routh
jan.routh@gmail.com

Samuel Crowell b. 16 Mar 1742 in Chatham, MA, married Jerusha Tracy 1771, and d. 19 Jan 1811 in East Haddam, CT., was buried there. His burial is listed at Bashan Cemetery in East Haddam, "Capt. Samuel Crowell" at age 69. Ancestry shows a death notice in the Middlesex Gazette of Feb. 1811 (age 68). I also see his pension paid to his widow Jerusha of Pennsylvania 1831-1841. I don't think this couple was in Nova Scotia.

This Samuel is a descendant of immigrant John Crowe of Yarmouth, per Levi Crowell's 1903 book Descendants of John Crowe. If you are interested, his line goes like this: son of Jonathan Crowell & Anne Nickerson; then Paul Crowell & Margery/Margaret Hall; John Crowell & Bethia Sears; John Crowe & Mehitable Miller; John Crowe & Elishua ___.

I found only one document that says that her father is Michael Crowell? Fannie ended up here in the Chicago, IL area. I can't seem to find anything else out about the Crowells, but you seem to have a ton of info!

Anne

Charles Crowell b. 25 Feb 1805 CT, d. 13 Oct 1844 Fulton Co, IL, m. Priscilla S. Fowler 17 May 1826 Ashtabula Co, OH. This Charles Crowell is my ggg-grandfather.

By process of elimination going through the Connecticut-born Crowells living in Ashtabula County, OH during the early 1800s, I believe perhaps Samuel Crowell (b. 5 Aug 1773 East Haddam, Middlesex Co, CT, d. 22 Aug 1854; m. 1795) and Clarissa (Ackley) Crowell (b. 19 Sep 1775 East Haddam, CT, d. 26 Nov 1830--both are buried North Cemetery, Ashtabula Co, OH) may be the parents of at least:

(1)Charles Crowell b. 25 Feb 1805 CT, d. 13 Oct 1844 Fulton Co, IL, m. Priscilla S. Fowler 17 May 1826 Ashtabula Co, OH;
(2)George Crowell b. 29 Jul 1809 East Haddam, Middlesex Co, CT, d. 17 Mar 1896 Iola, Allen Co, KS, m. Althea Crosby Ackley 17 May 1835 Columbus, Franklin Co, OH; and
(3)Ann Osborn Crowell d. 7 Jan 1835, m. Joshua Brainerd Emmons 12 Oct 1820 CT. (Ann's maternal grandmother [Clarissa's mother] was Anna Osborn.)

Samuel and Charles had adjacent lands in 1830 and their lands were near each other in 1840, in Rome Township. They were listed together, Samuel as a trustee and Charles as a constable of Rome Township in 1829, in "History of Ashtabula County, Ohio," by Moina W. Large, 1924, Historical Publishing Co, Chapter XXXIV, Rome Township.

In the 1850 census Samuel is living with George Crowell and his family in Rome Township. And it appears that George and his family (George, 31, Althea, 29, and son Edward, age 1) are living with Samuel in the 1840 census.

The parents of Samuel Crowell-1773 were Samuel b. 16 Mar 1742 Chatham, Barnstable Co, MA, d. 19 Jan 1811 East Haddam, Middlesex Co, CT, bur. Congregational Church Burial Grounds, Liverpool, Nova Scotia, m. Jerusha Tracy 14 Mar 1771 East Haddam, CT, b. 23 Oct 1751 East Haddam, CT, d. 1842 East Haddam, CT, bur. East Smithfield Cemetery, Bradford Co, CT. [Don't know why they weren't buried together.]

I would appreciate any comments.

Thank you,
Jan LaBorde Routh

My cousin in England forwarded a digital image of a book entitled, John Crowe And His Descendants. This 108 pg.book was published in New York by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. in 1903.

It is a Genealogy book of john Crowe coming to American and changing his name to Crowell. The book lists 10 generations
of this Crowell family. I believe it might be something
interesting for any Crowe/Crowell that have ancestors in
the New York area. If you are interest in seeing this book,
email me and I will email you a copy.
Thanks,
Sam
SamsRoots@bellsouth.net

Is there anyone out there who might know what happened to this individual? He was the 4th son and 6th child of 11 children of Nathan S. and Martha (Pollard) Crowell. I looked on the internet and found that died in 1909 but no source given and no place stated. I also found that he married Lucy Palmer. Can anyone verify this? Any information or directions to look would be appreciated.

I am looking for info about my maternal ggggrandmother, named Martha Crowell, b. 05 Oct 1798 in New Jersey. She married Charles S. Sparling (b. 13 Aug 1791, d. 11 Oct 1882 LaGrange County, Indiana). I know of one child, Mulford (b. 09 Nov 1825 in New York). I'm trying to trace her family. Much of my line is of German ancestry, but there is also some English in there. Any info would be appreciated. I'm not finding anything new in quite some time. Thanks, Judy

James B Crowell of Louisana

I started this for my grandmother, who passed away recently. Every time I seem to get somewhere, it dead ends.
James B Crowell was born and lived in Louisana. The 1900 census shows him there. My great grandfather was born in 1901 in Louisana. The 1910 census shows him living with his aunt Dora (Crowell) Hobbs at 8 years old. James B apparently moved to Texas, remarried and had several more children. There is no record of him there other than his death.
Here is where the big dead end happens. My great grandfather was native american. And there is no doubt that my grandmother, and her children are also. Eddie T would never talk about it, as this was the 20's and 30's. Are there ANY Crowells that have any information about Native American heritage in the Crowell line?
Thank you so much for your time.

James W (R) Crowell

I have a James W (R) Crowell (late family historian had him as James W R Crowell but have not seen any records to source that). He was born 5 May 1807 in Gardiner, Kebbebec, Maine (David-Parsons Holton A. M. M. D. and Frances-K Holton's book Winslow Memorail Family Records of Winslows and Their Decendants in America with the Enlgish Ancestory as Far as Known Vol II) and also sourced his father and mother being Eleazor Crowell and Anna Winslow but have not found anything to source the book. James was born suppossedly 5 May 1807. He later looped thorough Ohio and Indiana and married a Sarah Greene around 1832. I do not know if this was OH or IN.
I am trying to move a little further back on James and his parents but seem to have hit that famous genealogical brick wall. Any suggestions?

Re: Cromwell name

First and foremost, the legend is only real in that it has been documented. I think it originated in Halifax, NC, but many Crowell's know of the legend and passed it down through multiple generations. My family heard it through generations(Louisianan from, Alabama, KY, NJ, and then MA) and by happenstance, while playing a round of golf in our Barnstable some 30 years ago, my father herd it from our North American roots in MA.

Jane Ross Hammer (her daughter or granddaughter gave me the most precious handmade genealogy she found on Ebay) wrote a well researched book on the "Cromwell to America" legend, and it cites my ancestor Edward Crowell (acording to Hammer's research an alias for Thomas Cromwell) who married Sarah Vail. Birth date is disputed (1680 or 1685), but I have multiple sources firmly pointing my family to this ancestor.

I just learned last week that my second cousin completed a DNA test and indeed he matches the 8 or so MA Crowells in the study.

Great legend, but now extremely unlikely. The story is interesting though:

"The founder of the Crowell family in America was Edward Crowell, who was born in England or Wales in 1680. He sailed from Scotland on the ship Caledonia, landed at Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in 1705, and established his home at Woodbridge, New Jersey. According to tradition, the family was originally Cromwell (Vide, American Ancestry, Vol. IV, page 218), presumably descended from Sir Henry Cromwell, grandfather of Oliver Cromwell, the Protector.

On the voyage to America it was resolved to change the family name. With solemn ceremony this was done, by writing the name of each member on paper, each then cutting the letter "m" from the paper and casting it into the sea. Mr. Edwin Salter, Washington, D.C. (1886), states that the family parchment, or vellum, recording these facts, relating to the change of name, was in the possession of the Crowell family in North Carolina, in an ornamental chest, with other valuables, when, in 1781, the chest was seized and taken away by a party of "Tarleton's Legion"."

There are letters written from Tarleton written at the Crowell estate backing up this event, but no mention of the chest or its contents.

There are a couple of books at Google Books that mention the legend as well:
http://books.google.com/books?id=SzsTAAAAYAAJ&lpg=PA199&...

http://books.google.com/books?id=nkoUAAAAYAAJ&lpg=PA432&...

Here is a Poem I found about the legend:
POEM - THE CUTTING OF THE "M"
A sad-faced group on a vessel's deck,
A vessel outward bound.
They pay no heed to the Captain's words
Or the sailors hurrying round.
With stern-set faces and tear dimned eyes
They gaze on the fast receding shore,
For never again, save in memory or dream,
Will they see Old England more.

Put the chords of affection are strong chords,
And love is a curious thing
E'en to those homeless wanderers,
Parting, pain doth bring.
For these are the children of Cromwell
And England holds no place
In field or forest, in city or town,
For one of that hated race.

For eleven shadowed, storm-swept years
They sat on the heights of fame;
Now, ther's no word in the language
Too vile for that once honored name.
So -- they are sadly sailing
Over the ocn.s to the West
To find in the New World forests,
Oblivion and rest!

The ship had passed mid-ocean
And threatening clouds hung low,
When the Head of the House of Cromwell
Spake these words sad and slow,
"Hearken to me beloved!
There is somewhat I must say
Tho'it grieves me sore to say it
I can see no other way,"

"Ere we leave this waste of waters,
Ere we reach the Western shore,
We must lay aside forever
The dear name our fathers bore."
A low-drawn smothered sob
From a woman's broken heart,
An answering moan of anguish
From one who stood apart.

But with pallid pain..drawn features,
He who was their head,
Beckoned them up to a table
Where a parchment lay out-spread:
One last long, lingering look of love
And then they all agree
To cut the M from Cromwell
And cast it into the sea.

"Twas done." In a weighted casket
With hasp and lock of steel,
It rests, 'till Eternity's morning
The secrets of all Shall reveal.
In a brass-bound chest, the parchment
Was carefully laid away,
To be treasured along with tokens
Of a brighter happier day.

Suddenly a bright-hued rainbow
Spanned the mighty arch above
And they took it as a promise
Of a Father's watchful love.
They found a home and true kind friends,
On Carolina's pine-grist shore,
But the children of Oliver Cromwell
Were known as Crowell evermore.

Enjoy, but know it is probably all a fabrication. Lord knows how it started, but it does seem to emerge from NC and spread from there.

Soon I too will get a DNA test, and I believe this will only further affirm that descendants of Edward Crowell came from MA. There is little hope for this legend now.

Said as solemnly as the Crowell ceremony proclaims, I am legend no more. Thank goodness.

Now the only infamy to be concerned with is our connection to the Bush's, Palin's, Romney's (Mitt), and Stevenson's (Adlai), through John Lothrop (Edward Crowell's maternal Grandfather). Could be worse...

Pierce
My branch of the Crowells lead back to Massachusetts. Also, there are Crowells of Irish, English, and German descent.
My email is crowell.doug@gmail.com.

Thank you!
Doug Crowell

My daughter who resembles her grandfather's line, has it! It was fun to have my three children test it out. I don't have it. I'm going to see if my brother has that trait and if so, will respond back.

Crowell Family - Physical Characteristic

I would be interested in knowing how widespread this particular characteristic may be. My grandmother pointed out to me years ago that most Crowells in our family line have two middle fingers of the same length on their right hand. Specifically, the finger closest to the right hand pinkie finger is a little longer than the same finger on the left hand.

This seems to hold true with my relatives. I am wondering if it is found outside my direct lineage?
That is interesting. I am trying to pindown an ancestor by the name of Nicholas Crowel, who lived in Nova Scotia in the late 1700s to mid 1800s. I have two possibilities in family lines known to have moved to Nova Scotia as Planters and shortly thereafter. A John Crowe is listed coming here on the Merry Jacks with a son Nicholas, while a William Crowel also came shortly after with a son named Nicholas. Do you think the surnames still indicate the same origins by this point in time (1779 - 1861)?

Thanks.

I remember first hearing of this legend some 35 years ago. My grandmother has a Coat-of-Arms document she purchased back before 1975 that talked of the possibility that Cromwell might have morphed in the Crowell surname, supposedly to hide from the fallout with Oliver Cromwell.

I don't know if this is the origin of the legend or not. It may have been a gimick to sell these documents, or it might have had an earlier origin. I would love to see what you have for information on the topic.

Thanks.

I am trying to find out what happend to Nellie Crowell. She is the daughter of Justice Green Crowell and Bianca Winters Crowell of Pike Township, Jay, Indiana. According to information I inherited from my grandmother, she is their daughter. Her information shows she died a year before she was born. Does anyone of any information if Nellie really belongs to this family to start with?

Update. It seems Nancy Crowell may not have died in Nova Scotia. I cannot verify it is THE Nancy Crowell (Mother of Andrew, Alfred, James, and David H. Crowell) that was a passenger from Yarmouth Nova Scotia to Boston Massachusetts in 1898, but the passenger was Nancy Crowell, age 80. Our Nancy was listed as age 72 for the 1891 Canadian census, so the age is close and two of her sons lived in New Englad at that time. No trace of her in the states though.

Nicholas and Nancy Crowell

Nicholas and Nancy Crowell lived in Grand Pre, Kings County, Nova Scotia Canada from at least the 1871 Census, but likely before then as well. Two of their sons (Alfred and James married Chute sisters in Lawerencetown, Annapolis County Nova Scotia in 1862 and 1866. I know that Nancy died between 1891 and the 1901 census while living with her son David. I cannot find records of the births of Nicholas, Nancy, or any of their children in Nova Scotia though, making me wonder whether they were born elsewhere. If anyone knows of a Nicholas and Nancy Crowell or Crowel please let me know. Thank You. - Doug Crowell

The legend is confirmed...I mean that there is one. Probably never took place though. A while back a woman did a bunch of research and wrote a book on her theory of what transpired. The nexus is in my line, and so I should probably do a DNA test to tuck this story in for bed. Almost did 2 years ago, but all heck broke loose in my life (economy).

Anyway, your first order of business should be to figure out if you have an English line or a German. In the colonial period a bunch of Grauls (sp?) came into NC I think. Seeing there were some local Crowells (some of which were in the same line as the legend), they changed their names to fit in better.

I don't have access to it this minute, but I have some fun stuff on the legend I can send/post if you would like...

Pierce

Hugh M. Crowell KY Confederate soldier

Seeking information on this soldier who died in an epidemic that swept the 8th KY regiment camp in Hopkinsville during the winter of 1861-62. He was buried in the Potter's Field section of the city cemetery, along with 225 others, but many were said to have been exhumed later and re-buried by relatives in family burial grounds in the hometowns.

Does anyone have any information on his family, hometown or final resting place?

PS: I found a Hugh M. Crowell Jr whose estate was probated on 10 March 1862 in the Crittenden county,KY court. I believe he is the Hugh M, Crowell Confederate soldier who died in Hopkinsville on Feb. 3, 1862. If he was indeed brought home for burial it would be the first example I've been able to find of the 227 soldiers who were initially buried in Riverside cemetery and then exhumed and re-buried in his hometown.

Oddly, however, he does not appear in the family bible record of Hugh M. Crowell of Crittenden county who died in 1884. Does anyone have information on the Jr?
