Henry Kenard Howard Crowhurst , my Grandfather, wrote that census in 1911 as I recognise the handwriting. Donald Boyle may have been in contact with you on this subject. Henry and Eliza did come to Australia and their first born was Christened Henry Kenard Howard Crowhurst . I always knew him as my Uncle Ken.Henry has led us a merry dance but most has been sorted now. Goodness knows where the kenerd Howard came from. Nannette

I made an honest error in my last posting that the Henry Crowhurst that married Eliza Jane Plaskitt was not the same Henry. I was wrong as I have since found out that Henry did marry Eliza Jane Plaskitt in 1911. He is found on the 1911 census (Apr 2) as a boarder at the home of George Plaskitt, father of Eliza Jane. It shows him as single and a civil engineer. He marries Eliza Jane Oct 1911 and they set sail for Austrlia in Mar 1912 arriving April 1912. He did enlist in the Army in 1914 but it was the Australian Army.

The Henry that married Eliza Jane Plaskitt in 1911 is not the same Henry. Henry's wife, Mary, shows up on the 1911 census in Newport Wales with a son James William Henry born in Mar 1908. She came to Canada in 1912 with Jimmie and died Feb 1916. Henry reenlisted in the Army 1914-1917.
Henry was born in 1866 and this Henry was born in 1876 and emigrated to Australia in 1912.
I am doing this research for a friend who is the daughter of Jimmie. Henry was her grandfather.
I have been researching my Grandfather Henry Crowhurst for some time. I knew he was in the Royal Engineers. My mother knew little bits of information and I attempted to put it all together- but too late she died last year(age 96). Yes I knew he was married to Mary Young but guessed she had died as Henry remarried in 1911 and migrated to Australia. Please let me know your interest in Henry and are there descendants of Jimmy ?

Henry ??enard Howard Crowhurst b. 1868 Canterbury, Kent England

Hi All,

It has recently come to light (DonaldBoyle51 pointed it out)that I had the 'wrong' Henry Crowhurst (b.1866) married to Eliza Jane Plaskitt (b.1885) in my tree. On checking into this I have found the 1911 census for 21 Granville Street, Hull (Sculcoates), Yorkshire, England and Henry is recorded as a boarder in the Plaskitt household. Henry's occupation is recorded as Civil Engineer in the Architectural industry. He is recorded as having been born in Canterbury in Kent..... I see there are a lot of Crowhursts on here with ancestors in Kent so I'm hoping to enlist some help. I haven't come across 'my' Henry in anyone else's family trees. I think they may have emigrated to Australia immediately after getting married in 1911 but I cannot be sure.
The most baffling thing is his name. Besides being wrongly transcribed in the Ancestry record I still cannot make out his full name. As you can see from the title of the thread his second name looks to be unusual and I cannot make out the first part of it. It looks like the first letter is an H judging by the way George Plaskitt writes his Hs in Henry and Howard.
If anyone can shed any light on this I'd be very grateful. I've spent a good many hours trawling around the internet for information and drawn a blank.
Henry is the husband of my Great Aunt so I am keen to resolve this brick wall.

Thanks for taking the time to read this

JPW

Hi - just read your post although it went up in 2005. I am the grand daughter of Emma and Fred Linfield who immigrated to Australia in 1912 (Rose and Emma were sisters). I have a photo of Rose and Emma outside Penshurst Place with the milk cart taken in 1902 as part of a photography contest. I am going to England in about 4 weeks and want to visit nana's birthplace. Do you have information on where Emma and Rose grew up.

Thank you ever so much for responding.

Alfred is my great grandfather. You were probably not aware that he had a daughter before he left the UK to go to Canada. They were not married but his daughter (which would be your Aunt) took his name - Kathleen Florence Crowhurst.

Kathleen married George Beaney and they had 5 children - (your English cousins), Barbara, Patricia, Joyce, Marjorie and Edward. They are all still alive, Joyce is my Mum.

Kathleen passed away on 28 February 1969.

If you want to contact me offline at kaie@hotmail.co.uk then I would be happy to give you more background on the family and also your grandfather's tree - I can go back four generations on the Crowhurst line and eight generations on the Woodhams (his mother's line).

It would be great to know more about Alfred and Lily, and your father and Elizabeth as well as until early this year, my Mum knew nothing about what had happened to Alfred.

Also, if you would like to know more about your cousins then I would be happy to introduce.

If not, then I understand, and would just like to say thank you again for replying and that I hope that you all have a great Christmas and a wonderful and peaceful 2009.

Marc

I am trying to trace the crowhurst side of my family. My grandfather was Alfred George Crowhurst of Eastbourne in Sussex England and the document I have states his father as William John Bligh and mother as Harriet Alice Crowhurst nee Fenmer or Fenner. I have drawn a blank so far trying to trace back any further. Any help will be grateful.

Per LDS website, a Mary Ann Crowhurst married a Thomas Mitchel in Maidstone, Kent, 12 May 1818. Trying to verify that this Mary Ann is the same as Mary Ann Mitchell who is found living in Eastchurch,Kent, on Swanley Farm - as a widow of Thomas Mitchell - in the 1851 census. Mary Ann Mitchell is shown as 54 years of age in 1851, born in Bicknor, Kent. The Mitchell's oldest son, Thomas, was born about 1822. If same party, interested in her pedigree as well.

I'm looking for any details of my great great Grandfather Arthur Thomas Crowhurst

He was born in York in 1852 with the possibility that his father was a serving soldier in York at the time.

The 1881 Census has him living at the "Royal Artillery Barracks" Parish of Woolwich. He is listed as 21 and a Bombardier Royal Artillery.

He was married to Ellen Loxton at St Michael's Church, Bristol on the 5 November 1885 and had a daughter Edith Florence, born in York on the 27 Jan 1887.

He were sent to India where they had a son, Arthur Edward John on the 5 Nov 1890.

He died on the 14 Aug 1892 in Glocestershire.

Does anyone have any details of which side of the Crowhurst family his father was from? If he was in the army and from where he joined?

Re: What is the meaning of the name CROWHURST

The name Crowhurst is derived from the German word ?hurst? meaning ?nest? - thus Crowhurst is the same as Crows Nest, or probably the place where a crow?s nest was; or where flocks of crows nested. Another interpretation of Crowhurst, told by the vicar of Crowhurst, was a knoll surrounded by trees. The name is of Saxon origin. It was first found in England near York in about the 13th century. The Crowhurst family had estates near there.

The name Crowhurst is also spelt Crowherst, Crohirst, Croirst, Croerst, Cryist and Cryerst.

There is a village called Crowhurst near Godstone Station. The other village of Crowhurst is now in Surrey not far from Crawley in Sussex ? now in the parish of Lingfield.

Re: Kent Crowhursts

Abraham and Emily Crowhurst?s family lived in Tonbridge on the borderline of Kent and Sussex. On Rose Crowhurst?s birth certificate Abraham is listed as a farm labourer at Walters Green, Penshurst which is north east of Royal Tunbridge Wells, and east of Tonbridge, in the registration district of Sevenoaks.

Family stories say that Abraham used to deliver milk to Penshurst Place which was the local castle.

In the 1881 British Census they are listed at 8 Rochdale Road, Tonbridge, Kent, England .
Abraham died in 1909, when his daughter Rose would have been about 13 years old. The family split up and Rose was sent to live with one of her elderly Aunts - it is assumed that it was one of Abraham?s sisters. Whilst with the Aunt, Rose learnt to sew.
When Rose was about 16, her mother wrote her that her brother Harry, and her sister Emma, along with herself, were migrating to Australia. (Emma?s husband Fred Linfield had already preceded her). Rose?s Aunt thought that as she was getting old, and would find it considerably more difficult to look after Rose, that Rose should go along with them as well. They couldn?t get passage on the same boat so booked her on another. It is understood that Rose Crowhurst came to Australia with her cousin George Reid. Rose?s memories of the trip out (1912) were that she turned 17 on board the ship on the way out; and it was rough coming around the Cape of Good Hope.

Rose arrived in Sydney a couple of days ahead of the others. As soon as she landed, Rose and a girl she had met on the boat, found lodgings at a women?s hostel until they could secure positions as domestics (which was live-in and all-found) in Sydney.

Other Crowhursts in the family were thought to have gone to South Australia and America as well.
