This is an old post, but I have some information about your Crowleys. W. A. and Belle Crowley are buried in the Clarkson Cemetery in Webster County, MS. My GG-Grandmother was Margaret Melinda Crowley who married James Harris Ormon. She is also buried at Clarkson. I'm sure we are related but I'm not sure how.

Hi Emily,
Do any of the relative you refer to live in the Liverpoool area? I am in Worcestershire, but my husband's grandad (Tom Crowley) came down from Liverpool to Birmingham aged 20. It was his father who came over from Ireland and married Eva Wilde. There are many relatives still in the Everton area of Liverpool.
regards
Claire

My great grama was Edward Crowley's sister, Delia Frances Crowley born 1846 WI. She and her husband, as well as other siblings, lived with John and Bridget Crowley in their 27 Wade St. home in Chicago after they were married. From 1876 - 1880 Henry Burdick worked in the Chicago RR yards, as did John and some of his sons.
After John's death Delia and Henry Burdick moved back to Kenosha county, Wisconsin where Henry Burdick's family lived.
I started collecting family history in the 1970s and do have a fair amount about the Crowleys, but never could find when they came from before they lived in Bridgeport. CT. I got more involved in other lines after hitting that dead end and I never went ahead and researched the Catholic Church records, which would have been the next step. I am very curious to know what information has been found to locate their marriage and family back in Ireland. It is very exciting!

Copyright (c) 1990

Page 625 - (toward the top of the page) 1690
“10-30 September. Shippers by the Jefferys, Mr. Thomas Arnold, bound from London for Virginia: William Woodbee, Thomas Hill, Thomas Lawrence, John Hanford, Richard Haines, Edward Round, Samuell Newson, Hugh Lamb, Richard Whitpain, Arthur North, Oliver Williams, Edward Hartwell, Ambrose Crawley, Nicholas Dar, Jonathan Smith, Thomas Beene, Walter Benthall, Daniell Wherley. (PRO: E190/148/6).”

My focus is on the name “Ambrose Crawley” [Crowley?] (6th from last). In my possible English connections I have Ambrose I, II, III and IV. Ambrose I died about 1696; Ambrose II was born about 1635 and died about 1721; Ambrose III (Sir) was born about 1658 and died about 1713. Any of these three could have made this voyage in 1690. Then again, it could be an Ambrose Crawley totally unrelated to this family.

I have tried locating the ship named the Jefferys in all of the records I can find on line. I would like to figure out if this ship is one of the Crowleys’ fleet. What registry did it sail under? Since the Crowleys named their ships after family members, could this one be named after our first known “American” ancestor, Jeffery Crowley? There is a famous family by the surname of Jefferys, so it could be their ship or just named after them. No clue.

Does anyone have an idea about where I might find the arrival of this ship in Virginia? I wonder what the business was for these gentlemen. Most appear to be merchants from England.

There are many ships carrying persons with the surname Crawley/Crowley/etc. Some arrived even earlier than this date.

Thanks in advance
Ellen Bartish

You need to look at all the documents. Look at marriage, birth records etc. Did he naturalize? If you do not know look at the census for 1920 and 1930. Those will tell you when he came over and the naturalization papers may tell you what ship he came on. The ship manifest will tell you whp paid for his fare, who sponsored him, his final destination, and more. If you live in the Boston area the National Archives In Waltham Ma will have most of this info. Birth and death and marriage certs will be at the State Archives in Dorchester or Vital Records, also in Dorchester.

Please please if you have any info or even if you think you may know any details at all please let me kbow as we have no info whatsoever. I think they may have gone into care, could it have been through the church? Does anyone think they may be related to chrisopher crowley or know someone who may be? We seem to not be able track further back than christopher. We think he had another brother who died young does anyone recall living near a family with these children?Prggie remained in Southern Ieland and I think we have lots of distant relations in this area, but we cannot make the link.

Enumerated in the 1880 census of Lincoln Co., TN, Elizabeth, age 33, wife of John Hobbs, with Emma Crowley, age 13, and Frank Crowley, age 6, listed as stepchildren.

There are 6 minor Crowley children, Mary J., Rachel E., Emma, Chety, Frank and William named as heirs in the estate settlement of Thomas Largen, Madison County, AL, Mar 16, 1886.

Dear Crowley Researchers,

According to the following 1921 newspaper article, the Crowley's didn't move to Andrew County, Missouri until the spring of 1837. This article is wonderfully rich in genealogical detail. Enjoy!

Chronicling America - The Library of Congress
The St. Joseph observer. (St. Joseph, Mo.) 1906-1932
June 04, 1921, Pages 1 and 2

THE GRAND OLD MAN OF ANDREW COUNTY CELEBRATES

SAMUEL CROWLEY MINGLES WITH HIS FRIENDS ON HIS NINETY-FIRST NATAL DAY

AND SHOWS THAT HIS HEART IS STILL YOUNG

One survivor of a numerous Family Who Settled Andrew County And Who Did Much To Make It What It Is

Now Celebrates His Near The Century Mark Anniversary In A Way That Discloses His Still Active

Interest In Life.

The history of that grand old county-Andrew-just north of this county, is replete with the name of
Crowley-in fact the Crowley's did as much in the early history of the establishment of that county
as many dozens of the early settlers combined. At the present that great county is sprinkled over
with them and they are among its best citizens.

On May 21st Samuel Crowley, one of the pioneers of the family-and the last-who is as well known here
as in his own county, celebrated his ninety-first birthday. Of this grand old man the Savannah
Reporter in an article telling of the celebration says:

"Samuel Crowley, the heaviest individual taxpayer in Andrew County, and who has lived in Andrew
County eighty-four years, celebrated Sunday at the home of his nephew, W. S. Crowley, four miles
south of Savannah, his ninety-first birthday with four generations of relatives about him.

"Mr. Crowley's father was the presiding judge of the first county court held in Andrew County under
the elm tree in W. C. Henderson's yard in

THE GRAND OLD MAN OF ANDREW COUNTY CELEBRATES
(Continued from Page One)

1841, and the history of the Crowley family is most closely associated with
the history of Andrew county, and makes interesting reading for all Andrew county residents.

"Samuel Crowley, who celebrated his ninety-first birthday Sunday, was born May 21, 1830, five miles
from Excelsior Springs, and Is the son of Samuel and Sarah MacIninch Crowley.

Came There In 1837

"John Crowley, the grandfather of Samuel Crowley, was born in England, from whence he emigrated to
America during colonial days, and took up his residence In Ray county, Georgia, where he passed his
active years In the pursuits of agriculture. He was married twice and reared a large family, and in
his declining years moved to the home of one of his children In Clay county, Missouri, where he died
in 1847. Samuel Crowley, father of Samuel of this review, was horn near Savannah, Ga., in June,
1794, and migrated to Howard county, Missouri, with his brother, Jerry Crowley, at a time when the
state was still the home of hostile tribes of Indians, the white settlers for the most part living
at forts under the protections of soldiers. Later he moved on to Clay county, locating in the
vicinity of Excelsior Springs, but In the spring of 1837 came to Andrew county and pre-empted the
land on which G. D. Crowley now lives. That year he grew a crop, and In the same fall his family
joined him, his wife dying here in 1848. Mr. Crowley resided In Andrew county Until about the close
of the Civil war, when he went to Oregon, and there died at the home of one of his children, In
April, 1877. An excellent business man and an industrious worker, he accumulated about 600 acres of
land, and was known as one of the substantial men of his community. He served during the War of 1812
and fought under Stonewall Jackson. In politics, a Democrat, and was influential in the ranks of his
party in this part of the state, and was appointed by the governor as presiding judge of the Andrew
county court, which was held at that time under an old elm tree, there being no court house.

He Named Savannah

"This office Mr. Crowley had for two or three terms, and during this time named the city of Savannah
in honor of the place of his birth in Georgia. He and his wife were the paronts of twelve children,
as follows
James, who for many years was a farmer In Andrew county and died a bachelor when past 57 years of
age;
Louise, who married Willis Gaines and crossed the plains to the Pacific coast in 1852 with an ox-
team, her subsequent life being spent In Oregon, where she died;
Jane, who died in Colorado as the wife of Dean B. Holman, also crossed the plains In 1852;
Matilda, who was married the first time to Elvis Sloan and second to James Shields, and died In
California;
John W., who was a member of the party which crossed to the coast, contracted mountain fever on the
Journey, from the effects of which he died In California;
Louisa, who died in Oregon as the wife of William Hudson;
Mary Ann, who married Francis M. Holman, a brother of Dean B., and died In California;
George Washington, who died In Jefferson township, Andrew county, married Maggie Dysart, of Andrew
county;
Benjamin Franklin, who died at the age of two years;
Samuel, of this review;
Thomas McClain, who died In Jefferson township, married Elizabeth Smith, of Suisun City, Solano
county, California, and
Susan, who married Judge John L. Stanton, and died at Oregon, Missouri.

Owns a Thousand Acres

"Samuel Crowley, who is the only one of his parents' twelve children still living, has resided In
Andrew county all his life with the exception of the period when he was crossing the plains and in
the West during the excitement over the discovery of gold in California and the resultant rush to
that state. He received a good public school education, and when he reached manhood adopted farming
as his life's vocation, and In this has continued to be engaged to the present time. At this time
Mr. Crowley Is the owner of about one thousand acres of 'land, much of which he put under
cultivation, although a large part has been gained through wise Investment and the exercise of
foresight and good Judgment. He is still active In body and alert In mind and Is able to assist In
the management of his large affairs himself, although he has an able manager In his
nephew, Samuel W. Crowley, named for him, and who has a son, also named Samuel.

"Mr. Crowley has never married. He has been a Democrat in politics all of his life, but has not been
an office seeker, prefering to devote his activities to the peaceful pursuits of farming and stock
raising. For many years he has been connected with the Masonic fraternity, and has many friends in
that order, as he has in business and agricultural circles of Andrew County.

"There are many Crowley descendants in Andrew County and almost every one is an honor to and all are
good representatives of the honesty, industry and frugality which characterized their noble and
distinguished pioneer ancestors.

Four Generations Celebrated

"Sunday was also the second birthday of his little nephew of the fourth generation, Howard Lee
Crowley, son of O. L. Crowley and wife.

"At the noon hour a table loaded with a bounteous supply of all the good things imaginable graced
the spacious lawn. This table, centered with a large angel food cake containing ninety-one pink
candles and two white ones, surrounded by four generations of Andrew county's most respected
residents, made a picture long to be remembered. The birthday cake was baked by his great-niece,
Mrs. O. L. Crowley.

"The afternoon was delightfully spent in music on the player-piano besides eating Ice cream,
strawberries, cake and drinking lemonade. May they enjoy many more such happy occasions.

"Those present were; The guest of honor, Samuel Crowley; Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Mooers and son, Harry,
of St. Joseph; Mr. and Mrs, Sam Crowley and son, Samuel; Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stanton, Mr. and Mrs. John
Phillippi, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Crowley and daughter, Virginia, Mr. and Mrs. George Crowley and son,
Samuel, Mrs. Mabel Peters and daughter, Jessie, Mrs. Anna Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Phillippi
and son, Donald, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Brand and daughter, Lora, and son, Otto, Miss Agnes Sawyers,
Mrs. John Wiedmer and daughter, Mildred, and son, Albert, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Crowley and son,
Howard Lee, Miss Mary Woodcock, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Olds, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Crowley, Mrs. Mildred
Parvin and daughter, Marie, of St. Joseph, Mrs. Betty Evans, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Mooers and children
of St. Joseph, Ed Riehheart and two daughters and the host and hostess."

Katie Crowley died at age 41 in 1926, mother was Lilla Andrews, father was listed Wesley Ashman. Claude dies in 1928, his parents were Mike crowley and Minnie Scoff. I have not gound her marriage record yet but I imagine Georgia would be a good place to start.

Hi! I've been working on my mom and dad's genealogies on their behalf, and we've gotten stuck on his. I hope someone can help!! :)

My dad doesn't know anything about his mother's side of the family except for her name, Olive Myrtle Crowley, and a photograph. She was born around 1907 and died in 1952 from cancer. She was married to Leonard Haymans, Sr, and they had 6 children. I *think* that she was probably from the Georgia area - or somewhere in the southeast.

I haven't been able to find anything about her on my own, so I'm hoping someone will be able to help.

Thank you!
Caralen

Michael,

I forgot to tell you in my last message. I also have Peter and Mary's death certificate and Peter was born in 1864 and Mary was born in 1867. So we can be talking about the same people. Peter and Mary had 5 living children...John Patrick, Charles Francis, Robert Henry, Edward Emmett and Mildred Louise. If any of those names sound familiar to you or you are related to any of them please let me know.

Thanks again
Julie

Michael,

Hi, I am related to a Peter Crowley who was married to a Mary Murphy. Peter and Mary were my great great grandparents both from Co Cork Ireland. Peter's father's name was Micheal Crowley but unfortunately I do not know what his mother's name was. I do have a time line on here as well with that information. If you have any information or think we are related please message me back and let me know.

thank you
Julie

We do have a Joseph Francis Crowley on my husband's family tree that may be your father. His date of birth was February 10, 1936, from the information I received he passed away in November of 1994. I am sorry if this is your father and this is the first you are hearing of his passing. Please contact me if you would like more information about the family or to connact. He ws my husband's first cousin once removed, his father's first cousin.

I tried to send to your email but it failed.

Jenna

My great-grandmother was Mary E. Crowley married to William Kuhn. They had a farm in Horseheads, New York. I do believe my great-grandmother was born in New York not Ireland. They did speak Gaelic at home. She raised my mother.
