Late as always -I finally noticed your post, Gwen. This is terrific, helps clarify a lot ...it has always been a nagging question (Is north and south connectd?) Good to know. I just wish I could contribute a male Crown to the DNA project but mine all died out. But let's keep trying!

Thanks for your response. It is very helpful. Based on info I have ( and yours) I believe the David in the 1860 census is my David and feel sure his parents are Thomas and Margaret. I also had that he was married to Mattie (nickname) Martha Keating. I think they lived around Georgetown. There was a circle of related Crowns living around Georgetown and in Maryland in the late 1800s. My line descends from John and Margaret Poor Crown and the next part is to find out what Thomas' relation to John is. I know David was known by Susannah Crown Allen, who is the daughter of John and Margaret so I would guess David will turn out to be a cousin.

Crown Y-DNA Test Group

We have new Crown Y-DNA results for a Crown family line from Frederick Co, MD. His results do not match the line of #66217 Keith Allan Crown whose line was from Charles Co, MD, so we now have proof that the two lines are not related.
David Crown's Parents? Washington, D.C.

I'm looking for the parents of David Crown who lived in Georgetown in D.C. born around the 1850's, I think died 1899. I know he was part of the community of Crowns living in Georgetown (and Maryland) at that time and I have some information about his marriage to Martha Keating (or Caton). I thing he also married Sallie Dyer Knott 2nd. I keep running across him but can't figure out who he belonged to.

Amanda - I took a new look at Gwen Bjorkman's article "The Descendants of Joseph Crown(1710-1800)of Charles County & Montgomery County, Maryland" and found a Samuel Crown born 1805 who married a Charlotte Tucker of Annapolis in 1829. The Samuel Crown we seek was born before 1700. According to Gwen, he was the son of Samuel T Crown (who was one of the sons of the first Joseph Crown born around 1710). I am a descendant of John Crown son of Lancelot also. I have never found them as indentured, which means nothing of course. Records are lost, for one. And I am limited in my ability to go and research original records, often depending on the work of others like Gwen. But you never know what jewels you'll run into, so keep at it. :-)

Hey Pat,
I am also descended from Lancelot, more specifically, Lancelot's son, John. I believe so. I'm still trying to back up my information from documents, but the information I have was garnered from public family trees. If they weren't free men, I wonder if they'd show up on an inventory of indentured servants...probably is you'd have to find records from every person with that. Might be able to find it on ships registries though.
-Amanda

Hi Amanda: Is this Samuel and Joseph Crown of St. Mary's County, Maryland? If so, finding a clue that they are father and son is new information. I found a mention of Samuel Crown in the will of Samuel Queen, recorded in 1711, St Mary's county, but nothing else. Being that these Crowns did not own any land this early on and appeared to be simple folk, they have been hard to trace. My dream is to find who landed in Maryland first, and when.
I am descended from Lancelot Crown, one of Joseph's sons.
Pat

Marion's mother was Matilda Crown, never married and I haven't a clue who his father was but the family lore says he was a married man. Matilda's father was Frederick Crown who came to Maryland possibly from Ireland. None of the names you mentioned ring a bell with me.

Joseph Crown of Montgomery Co, Maryland 1710-1800

Hi Herb: We hope that you can find a direct line male with the last name of Crown to join our Crown DNA Test Group. The Y-DNA only tests for the direct male line and I know that you are descended from Susanna Crown who m. John Coale. Here is a copy of your correspondence. Maybe someone on this Crown Board can answer your question about Susanna Crown.

"Originally I thought I was descended from Joseph’s son Lancelot because you have his daughter Susanna Crown marriage to John Coale, 31 March,1798, Montgomery Co., MD. Later I found a marriage of Susanna Crown to John Coale, 11 September, 1823, Montgomery Co., MD. I sent for (and got) a certified copy of the marriage license. I know my ggg grandparents were John Coale (Cole) and Susanna Crown. Now which Susanna Crown, daughter of Lancelot b 1778 or Susan b 1797, daughter of Gerrard?
The 1850 census of Montgomery Co. has Susan (Susanna) Cole, age 49, living with her daughter and son in law, William and Sarah Case.
The 1860 census of Montgomery Co. has her, age 60, still living with her daughter and son in law.
That age on the census would make her the daughter of Gerrard, right? And too young to be the daughter of Lancelot. So I am reasonably sure I am descended from Gerrard. Now the problem, did both Susannas marry a John Coale? What was the source of your information about the marriage of Susanna and John Coale on 31 March, 1798?
Were there two John Coales, one who married the daughter of Lancelot and one who married the daughter of Gerrard?
John #2 could be the son of John #1?"
We have started a CROWN DNA Test Group and we would love to have some Crowns from England join our test Group. It would be so good to see if we have a matching DNA. Our CROWN DNA Test website is at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Crown/

So far we have only had one Crown tested and his earliest known ancestor is:

Joseph Crown, b 1710-d 1800 Montgomery Co, MD/Mary Fectrer

We assume that Joseph Crown was from England, but we do not have any record of his arrival in Maryland. He married first, Mary Fectrer, circa 1742, in Charles Co., MD. She was born circa 1722, died before 1756 in Charles Co., MD. There was recorded in Charles Co. in 1744 a deed from Ann Fernly, widow, to her son, Thomas Fectrer, and to her daughter, Mary Crown, for "Naturall affection, and Motherly Love" all of her personal property. They were to be put in possession of her property at the time of her death.

He married second, Elizabeth Dyer, daughter of William and Susannah Dyer, before 1756. She was born 1726, died after 1776, probably in Montgomery Co., MD. In 1755 she was named in her father's estate settlement. In 1757, payment was made to "Jos. Crown who married a daughter of the dec'd." The administration account of her brother, William Dyer, dated 6 Sep 1769, administered by her brother, John Dyer, named the four brothers and five sisters of William Dyer and included Elizabeth Crown and Mary Crown. Elizabeth would have been the wife of Joseph, but it is unknown who Mary Crown would have been. Money due to Samuel Crown was also mentioned in this account.

I would love to hear from any Crowns interested in joining our Crown DNA TEST Group.

Gwen Boyer Bjorkman
gwenbj@seanet.com

Relatives are ?ah Robertson Crown, b. 1816, David Crown, b. 1821, Hannah Rebecca Crown b 1823, Elizabeth Crown b 1826 and who's parents could be William b. 1796 and Rebecca b. 1792.

Does this fit with your information?

I have no connection to this family but wanted to share this information as this would be impossible to come by and I know personally how helpful this can be. It is from the book "Vital Records of St. George, Maine". Included in there is an 1895 Town Census. In most cases they give ACTUAL birth dates AND also in most cases, they give the wife’s maiden name. Apparently they’re not all in alphabetical order, so I may be adding to this, so here goes:

p. 514

Crown
Lizzie, b. Nov 24, 1874

Hi Polly,

I trqcked Down the cron's after checking census data and relaizing that the name was missepelled frequently. Found Earl Crawn..I suspect that the family itself was illiterate and so would say "well that's Cron, spelled the usual way or it's spelled the way it sounds" the census worker then would just spell it however. Cron changed spelling A LOT Cron, Crawn, Cronn, Kron, etc whether here or germany. Check out my tree. I got Cron traced back to germany...

Hi Polly

Amy Cron Kipar here...I am researching the same. My dad Donald is the youngest of Fannie's kids and he tells me that there was an Isaac crown whom he beieved to be Fannie's grandfather who owned a "gravity railroad" somewhere in PA that ran to NYC. Also this was supposedly the Jew that married "someone" who was related to queen victoria and was made to leave england. Also I don't know if you were aware but Grandpa Pete (fAnnie's dad) frequently went by Cron at times and also Fannie had a brother that went by Cron occasionally. I don't know if any of this helps or how to link you to my family tree but I got some stuff there you may find interesting... Amy

This is a secondary source, but I found reference to a Samuel Crown in the will of Samuel Queen, 1711. Joseph theoretically would have been an infant then.

Hi,
I'm looking for John J. Crown, born Dec 1876 in Brooklyn. He had a brother named Charles H. and their parents were from Ireland (although later census' indicate Irish/English). John married Anna (Annie) Kaiser around 1897 in Brooklyn and they had several children: Annie, Catherine, Sarah, Elizabeth, and one boy Richard who died at 7 years old during the flu epidemic. I need help figuring out a) John's parentage. b) John's death date, which I surmise to be between 1920 and 1930 (because he is alive at the 1920 census and Anna is a widow at the 1930 census).

In any case, any help would be appreciated. Another clue is that both Crown brothers (John and Charles) were associated with the liquor business (bartending, and hotel liquor).

Thanks!

I'm sorry, the last male Crown that I know of in my family died Feb. 2005. I am an only child and am not in contact with any of my cousins.

If you have a male Crown in your family, we would love to have you join the Crown DNA test group and have your male relative tested. It is a very simple test of a brush on the inside of your cheek in order to pick up a few cells to be tested. We are hoping to be able to find matches for many with the Crown surname. We also have some Krohn that have been tested. Your ancestor may have changed the spelling of his name when he arrived. See our webpage at:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Crown/

You join right from the webpage where it says "Join this Group." I would be glad to hear from you.

Gwen Boyer Bjorkman
gwenbj@seanet.com

Russian Crowns?

My father always told me that our family name, Crown, was a name that had been adopted when his family immigrated to Canada fleeing antisemitism in Russia. I know that my grandfather, Louis Crown, was born in Cornwall, Ontario and that his parents were Joseph Crown and Rachel, maiden name unknown. I am at a dead end and am wondering if anyone else has been trying to follow this same line of inquiry?
