I have heard of John Crakston coming over on the Mayflower, but only through family lore, but that was 40 years ago. I htink there could be something to it, but I have no proof as yet. Will let you know if I turn anything over.

Claiborne Croxton 1827-1863 and Susan Waring Brizendine Croxton 1825-circa 1865-1870 were my 2nd great grandparents. She was married twice. Their son, Thomas Claiborne Beauregard Croxton 1862-1948 married Julia Alline Stokes 1866-1863. They were my great-grandparents and lived with us. They had 7 children, the youngest, Lina, was my grandmother. I know this info to be accurate. In my younger years we had five generations living in our house including Lina and Julia Alline. I never knew "Poppa" as he died long before my birth. I also have the family bible of Thomas Claiborne Beauregard and Julia.

The seven children:
Helen Gertrude Croxton 1887
Thomas Wade "Wade" Croxton 1890
Mary Alice "Alice" Croxton 1891 – 1986
Virginia Alline "Alline" Croxton 1894
Frederick William Cook Croxton 1898 – 1930
Bertha Woodly Croxton 1900 –
Lina Ruby Croxton 1905-1997 (aka Adeline Ruby)

Claiborne and Susan had three other children that I am aware of, George b. 1855, Alice b.1857 and Ann E. b. 1859. Thomas C.B. was b. 1862. Claiborne died in the Civil War in 1863. Susan moved into the home of her brother, Lawson Waring with Thomas C.B. Your Alice appears in the 1870 Census as living with Martha Hundley in Essex County, VA, Millers Tavern Post Office, page 207 line 30. Looks like several people with different last names living there, which is 2 names away from Thomas Brizendine - maybe Susan's first husband? Susan was born in 1825 and Thomas B. was born in 1819. Could be Alice was sent to live with/near her father's family upon Susan's death which came early??? Susan's son George W. Shows up in the 1870 census as living with Robert Brooke and others with different last names in Essex County, VA, Millers Tavern Post Office, page 213 line 7. I have not yet found anything to tell us where Ann wound up by 1870, and as I said, Thomas C.B. was with Susan at Lawson Waring's house. Since Claiborne had died Susan probably had to spit her family up to provide for them. It's very sad. Susan's father was John Henry Waring. My Mary Alice lived primarily in Richmond, was married 3 times, had one son Donald Malloy born of her second marriage. She was an entrepreneur, owning millenary shops in Richmond. I knew her well, her son, too.

I still have far to go with Warings and Croxtons, but hope this is helpful to you.
Searching our family tree, I found Claiborne Croxton and Susan Brizendine who were my great great grandmothers parents. She was Alice A. Croxton. I found this info from the Census info and knew that her maiden name was Croxton and her father was killed in the Civil War. She married Charles T. Baldwin and moved to Howard County MD. I have further info on her and her family if you need it. I don't know of a Mary Alice Croxton that you mention.

Hi

I was wondering whether George married more than once. I have one wife Lucy G.E. (maiden name unknown) from 1881 England Census. In the census there are children that are unlikely to be children from Lucy as she would have likely have been too young to be able to bear them.

Did he have a previous wife?

John

Not yet, at least not that I'd like to confirm right now. There are several Johns in the line - I need to re-review all of this. Due to some work constraints my ancestry work is moving at a very slow pace for a while, but I promise I will respond again once I have more info. I may even have some very old info on paper from the National Archives from several years ago when I got stuck at this point in the tree. Will stay in touch!

Mayflower Passengers - John Crakston / Croxton

Has any Croxton decendants conducted any research into the Mayflower passenger, John Crakston? According to the "Mayflower Series of Papers: 2 The Passengers and the Compact", it depicts a John CROXTON who was the passenger and whom signed the Compact. It does indicate that no known descendants existed but also has a disclaimer that this is not solid proof that no descendants existed. Since it appears that the "England Croxton" has never been able to be identified, just curious about this one John Crakston as a possible link. Wondering if anyone has already gone down this route of exploration?

Hi Cousin,
Do you have the names of John's brothers and sisters? A couple of my Chowning cousins and I were up in Essex County the last part of June. I got the Essex Co., Church Cemetery book. 16 Croxton names are in there but the earliest is Joseph Croxton b. 1845 d. 1916. There are several church cemeteries that have been lost due to the congregations nolonger existing.

You can add the first name of "John" to your list of Croxtons who served in the Revolution War. I applied for membership under this ancestor and it was vetted and approved by the DAR. This is the John Croxton (1745-1817) who married Mary Ann Crutcher; his mother was Susan Baughn/Boughn and whose father was Thomas Croxton.

I am trying to find out if Mary Ann Croxton is the wife of my 4th great grandfather.

I know for a fact that my 3rd great grandmother is Alice Sandy Marmaduke (married to James Berkeley Marmaduke in 1881) and that she had a brother Edward Sandy and a sister Mary J Sandy.

Do you know if Mary Ann Croxton Sandy & Edward M. Sandy had children with any of the above names?

Thanks so much!

I suspect that the Ann Dunn who married Carter Croxton was a daughter of William Dunn "III" and his wife Diana Unknown. William Dunn "III" was a son of William Dunn, Junior ("II") and his wife Winifred Waters. William Dunn "III" had a sister who was named Winifred Dunn ("I"), and she married a Mr. Jones (shown as Ambrose Jones by several researchers....that Ambrose Jones COULD have been out of the Richard Jones who had a son named Ambrose, as well as a daughter named Keziah Jones who married Henry Brown "I").

William Dunn "III" and Diana Unknown also had a daughter who was also named Winifred Dunn ("II") (and one post on RootsWeb shows that Winifred Dunn "II" married an unknown Mr. Smith and had four children with him....though I do not know what documentation shows that). The above relationships would "explain" the daughter of Carter Croxton and Ann Dunn who was named Winifred Croxton (born 1787). One file/chart on RootsWeb WorldConnect shows the following children for William Dunn "III" and Diana Unknown: John, Catherine, Winifred, Elizabeth/Betty, James and Nancy/Ann (was this the Nancy/Ann Dunn who married Carter Croxton)?

Sophrina Ann Smith was the only known daughter of John Smith and his wife Mary Dunn. Mary Dunn was a daughter of John Dunn and his wife Judith Edmondson. Judith Edmondson was apparently the daughter of a John Edmundson and his wife Catherine Dunn. Sophrina Ann Smith had brothers named John Hancock Smith, Samuel Smith, Charles C. Smith (apparently married an Emily Dunn) and William Francis Smith. I wish that a living male Smith from this family would take the DNA test. I would like to see if this was part of the same overall Smith family as the John Smith who married Sarah Waller (daughter of Judge Benjamin Waller....who had earlier been "taken under the wing" of Colonel John Carter, a son of Robert "King" Carter). There are some clues that suggest that both of the above-referenced John Smiths were members of the same Smith family (which "traces back" to the Alexander Smith who died in Middlesex Co., VA about 1696). The John Smith who married Sarah Waller was a son of Major Maurice Smith (circa-1727-1795) of Middlesex Co., VA, and the Major had married the widow Mrs. Catherine (Carter) Jones (the widow of Humphrey Jones "III," and an ancestor of one of Robert "King" Carter's close (and wealthy) relatives named Thomas Carter).

(We're having a family reunion for that branch on May 29, 2010 in Litchfield, Illinois if anyone is interested.)

Were the Croxtons of Gallatin County, Kentucky and Ripley County, Indiana related to those who built the Cherry Walk home in Virginia? I can't find a definite link between Thomas Croxton (my G3 Grandfather) and his parents except that he seems to have been born in Virginia.

Hello,

Regarding your question about Mary Elizabeth (Croxton) who married Peyton Parker: Mary Elizabeth Croxton was the daughter of Wortley Croxton and Nora Fannie Taylor. Wortley and Norah were my ggrandparents. In addition to Mary E., Wortley and Nora had Walter Mason(my grandfather), Beulah, Lucy, Joseph, John, Mettie, and Nora. Peyton's first wife was Julia (my lineage) who died tragically when my grandmother, Catherine, was around 9yo. Peyton -- who was my mother's grandfather -- married Mary E., who, interestingly was my mother's aunt (her father Walter's sister). Children born to Peyton and Mary Elizabeth included Elizabeth and I think Richard. Thanks....

tithes for 1790 in Essex Co., VA and more

Hello, While you weren't specifically looking for this info it may help. On the site www.binnsgenealogy.com you can see some free information. A listing of the tithes in Essex Co for Dobbyn men are as follows: Willaim Dobbyn 2 white/1 black 1 horse; Daniel Dobbyn 1 white/2 black and 1 horse; and Thomas 1 white/2 black and 7 horses. This area was known for fox hunts, perhaps that is why Thomas had so many horses. There is also a Carter Croxton listed with 1 white/4 black/2 black between 12-16/3 horses. This all in 1790. This area was attacked in the War of 1812 by the British. Per the book "Settlers Southerners American, The History of Essex County, VA" page 90 "Black soldiers constituted about a third of the British landing force at Tappahannock. In the Revolutionary war, the British liberated hundreds of slaves and trained them as soldiers at Tangier Island bebore assigning them to the fleet. ... after plundering Tappahannock(in Essex Co., VA), the flotilla maneuvered along the Essex and Richmond County shorelines. Between the third and the seventh of December they struck plantations and liberated slaves." Perhaps a nice piece of family history?? What do you think?

Carter Croxton was born 16 Mar 1761 and died 29 Apr 1845. He was the son of John Carter.

Carter Croxton married first Nancy Dunn; I was aware of one child, Dr. William S. Croxton (1799-1860; killed by female slaves).

Carter Croxton married second Mrs. Frances Cole Faulconer (1803-23 Nov 1849) and had at least four children: Mary Ann Croxton, Fanny Ellen Croxton Broaddus, Louisa Carter Croxton, and Cornelia Burt Croxton (last three are mentioned as minors in his revolutionary war pension file S9250).

According to information on the Internet, a Carter Croxton born about 1801 was the son of James Croxton and Sarah. "He was named for his uncle Carter Croxton ... of Revolutionary fame."

Yep, I made a typo; Noah's middle name was BERKLEY. My husband doesn't remember much about the uncles but I have found this amount of info---Richard Earl Taylor, 1887-1946; Jack P. Taylor 1890-????; James W. 1895-????; William Macon 1899-1952; and Charles A. 1908-????. Hope this proves helpful.

About 5 years later, I can respond. Fannie Nora Taylor Croxton was a sister to my husband's mother, Molly Taylor Parker. I have been able to trace their father and mother -- Noah Bentley Taylor and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Davis. Noah died in 1900. His father and mother were James Henry Taylor and Mary Polly Houston. William H. Taylor and Frances Durham were the parents of James. Nora had seven brothers and sisters and one half sister. Am still chasing down Lizzie Davis's parents.

Re: CROXTON'S OF SOUTHERN INDIANA

I think I'm probably related to Eli Croxton (and you?)somehow. Thomas Croxton and Barbara Moore are my direct ancestors through Joseph Croxton who moved to Illinois. Eli may have been a son or younger brother of Thomas. (Their households were in the same neighborhood on one of the censuses attached.) If you see anything about James Croxton born about 1785 who could be the father of Thomas and/or Eli, I would LOVE to hear about it! Thanks for posting some great info, and nice to make your acquaintance.

Lynn Croxton
Belleville, Illinois
LostLenore@aol.com

I'm a descendent of Thomas Croxton and Barbara Moore through their son Joseph. Joseph Croxton was born about 1852, moved to Illinois and died in a coalmine around 1910. I'm happy to share what I know about him and his Illinois descendents, especially with anyone who can tell me more about Thomas. I know he was born in Virginia and think his father's name was James, but there doesn't seem to be a connection between them and any of the Virginia Croxtons I've found. I gather from some family trees that James was born about 1785, possibly in Ireland. My e-mail is LostLenore@aol.com if you can help me out. Thanks!!!
