Page 132 (see link below) mentions John Crusoe of Bassa making a donation of $1.00 I believe the marraige is mentioned somewhere within this text. In a volume of the Repository there is also mention of a trip that J.J. Roberts took to England accompanied by John Crusoe who was going there on business. Whether this was the old man or his son I'm not sure.

http://books.google.com/books?id=258oAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA132&a...

Yes they were married in Liberia. I read about the marraige in the African repository, once I can locate the link I will post it for you. Edina has its own city website, here is the link http://edinacity.com/. Give the mayors of Edina a look, a Crusoe once served. Sent you an email as well.

Hello Sue,

If you would like to know more about the Liberian roots of the Crusoe family please contact me. I am a descendant of one of the great(great)grandchildren of the John Crusoe who left Monroe TN. My grandmother's father was Stephen Nero Crusoe, he was born and raised in Edina, Grand Bassa - Liberia. She also had a Uncle named Lafayette Crusoe. The old man John Crusoe settled in Edina and was a successful merchant and ship owner, records of this are online in the African Repository. My grandmother confirmed that her grandfather and his Crusoe relatives (siblings/cousins) were in this line of business. I attempted to reach you by mail a few weeks back but received an error message.

John Crusoe owned the property that I now live on in Monroe County, Tennessee. The land was along and northwest of Island Creek near Vonore, Tennessee. He sold the land in November, 1850, and left for Liberia from Baltimore in December, 1850, going to Grand Bossa. His son Lafayette was with him as well as several other of his children. John Crusoe is on the earliet Monroe County Census records, and I have personally searched the records in the County Deed files. It appears that John Crusoe, a free slave for many years, was given the land by his previous owner, but we have no idea who that is.

I have found 12 Crusoes travelling from Monroe County, Tenn to Bassa, Liberia on the Liberia Packet 1850/1851. The oldest being John Crusoe b. 1778, John Jr b. 1837, Henry b. 1814, Polly b. 1810, Sarafina b. 1835, Sarahann b. 1845, Thomas b. 1831, W.P. b. 1833, Layette (poss Lafayette) b. 1843, Martha b. 1839, Maryann b. 1841, Mountford b. 1816. I can find no other Crusoes travelling at that time. Can anybody tell me how they are related? Are they father and 6 sons and the sons wives or are they all John's children?

Lafayette Crusoe left Monroe County Tennessee in 1850 to travel to Bassa, Liberia with his parents and siblings. They are listed on the 1850 Monroe county Tennessee 1850 Census, and listed in the African Repository files online aboard the ship "Liberia" which sailed from Baltimore in late 1850. I also have a copy of the deed when John Crusoe, freed slave, sold his property in Monroe Co. TN in late 1850

Hi there, thanks for the reply. Can we communicate via email?
I know that Lafayette had 2 children - John Jacob Crusoe born 2 Feb 1888, he had a sister do you know her name?
John Jacob had to leave Liberia in a hurry and got on first ship which landed him in Liverpool, UK. He did marry there and had a child but both died shortly after child's birth. However he did go on to have further children with his partner who kept house for him. There are quite a few Crusoe families in England & Wales from this Lafayette's son. regards Sue R

Hello, if they are the descendants of the John Crusoe Sr. that left TN and settled in Liberia their distant cousins (descendants of his son John Crusoe Jr. and other siblings) are in Liberia and the United States. Very few still bear the Crusoe name, Stephen N. Crusoe (my Great Grandfather) himself had three daughters that I know of. Any Crusoe you find in Liberia will more than likely be a descendant. My grandmother had an Uncle named Lafayette but not sure if this is the same person you mentioned.

p.s. My Grandmother says her father's family made their living in Liberia as merchants and actually owned ships. There are records in the African repository of John Crusoe being a ship owner and prominent citizen of Edina. There is also a record of a John Crusoe of Edina getting married to Elijah Johnson's daughter or granddaughter. As per my email we always knew my Grandmother was a descendant of Elijah Johnson because he is a well renowned figure in Liberian history, many of her cousins still carry the Johnson name.

The Crusoe family established themselves in a small settlement in Grand Bassa county called Edina. My Grandmother's father Stephen Crusoe lived and died in Edina. There is only one Crusoe family in Edina and possibly in all of Liberia as it is a rare name there. She also says she had an Uncle named Lafayette Crusoe possibly a descendant of the Layette (misspelling of Lafayette?) Crusoe that traveled with John Crusoe to Liberia. There is no reason for me to come on ancestry.com to mislead anyone. Would also prefer if we discussed more personal details of my family's history over email.

yes I did, but I didn't see the connection to John Crusoe. You mentioned Cynthia, but how does she come from John? He went to Liberia with his kids, and they match the list in Tennessee records...but I don't know what happened to them once they got in Bassa.

It is not MY ancestry search, it is YOURS, and I will send you what I have. If in fact you can prove you are descended from John Crusoe, he is an amazing part of our country's history. Freed slaves before the Civil War were an unusual part of the community, and if had not been part of the Methodist Church's participation in the colonization efforts in Liberia, your ancestors would have been in an area torn by Civil War in Tennessee...and the outcome could have been much different. Can you tell me where your line comes from after John Crusoe...which child of his?

Thanks for your response. I live on the property owned by John Crusoe until he sold it in 1850, in Monroe County, Tennessee. I can email you photos of the property and area, as well as give you the information I have, in exchange for whatever you know about the family. My interest is in finding WHO was the slave owner when John Crusoe was given his freedom, and how did he come to own over 600 acres. Where do you live now? Feel free to ask anything you need.
Hello John Crusoe is my ancestor via my maternal grandmother Cynthia Crusoe of Edina, Liberia. The family originally believed him to be from the islands but upon further research we found he was from TN. The Crusoe family settled in Edina, Grand Bassa County, Liberia. Records of John Crusoe and his relatives can be found in the African Repository.

We will pursue and try to prevail! My wife tends to look and look and then go back and keep looking and then look some more and not give up and she can keep talking about it (which is worse--the looking or the talking, I don't know--LOL!). Anyway, feel free to e-mail us independently at dyetrampe@roadrunner.com but we will continue these posts like this so that others might read in case they connect up to us, etc.. Last evening, Lois did a brief check of the Churchwell surname in early VA and didn't get anywhere (yet). Last month from the Genealogical Publishing House in Baltimore, we purchased a Family Archives CD that says "Genologies of Virginia Families from Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine" so we need to look at that for any possibilities. Has anybody checked the former county, Spotsylvania from which Orange Co. was created in 1734? We will also keep our eyes open in Louisa Co. and Culpeper Co. for Jacksons. We will try to check into that. Lois has lines that were in Louisa, Orange, Culpeper, Essex (those are some of the lines we want to check when we go to VA this month) and other VA counties and I have other ones that were in JCC, CCC, and New Kent Co. that we hope to look into. We are taking regular vacations to VA and we are trying to do some on these genealogies each trip. We can't do it this trip, but we want to return to Russell Co., (SE--almost to TN) VA where the Robert Kilgore fort house is located. George's Kilgore line has Robert nephew of Robert and the Uncle Robert is George's line. The fort house was a way station type of place with fortified walls where travelers could stop over, sleep, eat, change horses, etc.. The place was fortified due to Native American attacks. We want to take another pic of the fort house because we lost the ones we took when we were there. Anyway, there is much genealogy waiting for all of us in VA! Thanks for writing back right away!
Hello again =)

Well over the past 30 or so years I have been watching and waiting for a sign of Churchwell JACKSON Sr - in VA.. ANYWHERE!

There are several of us online, cousin connected, who in the past - worked diligently to find our connection in Orange Co. (JACKSON & CHURCHWELL - possible mothers last name or for no rhyme or reason LOL) Researcher who have traveled to Orange Co, say no sign of him. So far no one- that I know of -has found it over the year's. All I know is we all have the same info from TN through North Carolina - Census, Land & Military - which is available to anyone. (children of his sons moved into other parts of the south, AL,AR,TX,MO,OK etc.

Once I was at a cross-roads with another of my lineages -HAWKINS- MY family stories and folklore was my G Grandfather was a doctor in the Ozarks of AR... I traveled to the town he came from - went to the local library and found more info - and - when I went to the local court house (always on there terms LOL) I found proof that my G Grandfather was indeed a licensed Doctor. Court House had an old Doctors register... there he was right in it - proof he was not only a doctor but a surgeon LOL... I now have a copy of his actual license. I had almost given up proving it to everyone -ha!

Okay - Orange Co for JACKSON - there are tons of JACKSON around there... we most likely connect to them all in some way shape or form... it just has a cobweb where we attach. Its there and someday - someone will attach it.

Warm Regards!

So my story continues with JACKSON

Hi Cousin and thanks for writing back right away. We didn't know if you would still be looking into this site. Do you know if Churchwell or his widow applied for a Rev. War pension or if he was awarded any land anywhere, etc.? Maybe we should try to find some info there, too. We (Lois and I) haven't worked much on this line yet but we want to. I have a distant cousin in Illinois (my home state) who has done much and I will look at her site and let you know how to get on it if you haven't seen it yet. We plan to call ahead to the Orange Co. libe and find out re the genealogy section and what is there. Sometimes the LVA has the same info as the counties have and even more than the counties have.....apparently during the War Between the States, the VA counties were requested to send their records to Richmond. Some did and the records were saved, some didn't send their records and the records were saved within the county. Some records were just lost from the confusion of battle and war or in fires. So it is amazing that some records indeed did survive. We will see what we can do while we are there. We will look for Churchwell families, too, etc.. If you can think of any suggestions, please let us know. We will be out of town the week of June 7-13. Then we will be home a week before leaving for VA on 6/20. We will probably go to Orange Co. on 6/25. We will keep you posted. Will be clad to hear from you re any knowledge of Churchwell's Rev. War service and anything else. Thanks again.
Hello Cousin's!

Yes we are all in dire need of the Parents of Rev. War Soldier Churchwell JACKSON'S Parents, siblings AND HIS WIFE too.

Military Records state he was born in Orange Co,VA. No one has discovered his family life yet. Is he listed with a nickname, or mispelling? Was Orange Co, divided amongst several counties.. should we be looking in other counties?

Now, I will say this as a hopeful lead or NOT. My family folklore - stories that has been told through generations is that our JACKSON is somehow connected to the same JACKSONS - that is connected to Mary Todd - maddison or her sister. This is the Stonewall Jackson lineage - My great or great great G-ma Mary Ann -was to have connected as a cousin to him. It is just a story and I treat it as such, until I see solid evidence.

Please keep me in your thoughts if you find Our Churchwell JACKSON or his wife.

I don't know who were the parents and the wife of Churchwell Jackson, Sr.. My wife and I will be in VA the last 2 weeks in June for vacationing and doing genealogy and we plan to stop in Orange Co.. Does anyone have any suggestions as to doing library work or courthouse work there? We are also planning time to do research at the LVA (Library of Virginia) in Richmond. Will be glad to try to do some lookups/exchange info if anyone is interested. Thanks. George Trampe

Does anyone have any suggestions as to doing library work or courthouse work there? We are also planning time to do research at the LVA (Library of Virginia) in Richmond. Will be glad to try to do some lookups/exchange info if anyone is interested. Thanks. George Trampe

I am researching the JACKSON line as well. My ggrandfather was James Churchill Jackson, son of Daniel John Jackson (gggrandfather). Daniel's father is Churchwell Jackson, Jr.(gggrandfather) Therefore, his father is Churchwell Jackson, Sr. (ggggrandfather) I, along with so many out there, am trying to find additional information on
Churchwell, Sr. I am trying to find additional information on the Sr. in order to move forward in our genealogy research.
