I don't know if there is anyone connected to this person, but Amy Cudney was married to a John Brewer I think in Ireland and they came to Canada before 1884. They lived in the Meaford area. Later their son William Francis moved to Sask.

I'm really looking for the origin of Amy Cudney. She was born in Ireland along with her husband John Brewer. They came to Canada beofre 1884. I'm really interested in knowing where she was born and her background, and in the process finding out more about her husband and his origin as well.If anyone knows anything about the Cudney family in Ireland, or even Brewer I would be happy to hear from you.

CUDNEY/FRENCH connection

I have Maria Cudney who married James Monroe French. She may be Irena M. Cudney (not sure) as listed under the children of Benjamin and Nancy Cudney in one of the censes.

I am looking for the husbands of the other Benjamin/Nancy Cudney daughters, namely whoever married Sarah and Phoebe. I have a newspaper article stating that a Uriah French went to Shokan to attend the funeral service for his sister in law Angeline Cudney Winchel. I cannot find out how he is actually related to her. I cannot find his connection to James Monroe French. In other words...how does Uriah French become connected to the Cudney family?

Hope that makes sense.

My Cudney line includes:
my mother, Mary Delores b: 1933; William Hartley 1906; Harmon Maitland 1877; Harmon 1848; John 1820. things get a little confusing here. The 1861 census of Canada in Lincoln county, Grantham, Harmon's mother is listed as Margery. I have been unable to find a John and Margery Cudney listed any where else I have information, but not proof that the line continues: Joseph 1794; Ezekial 1758; Mikiah 1720. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I live in Colorado, so just information about addresses to request information would be great.
Judy, If you have a technique to get a good picture of Ann's headstone, then I would appreciate that. Mine is very difficult to read. I checked my records, it was the stone for Peter Gumaer that I found that was adjacent to Darius and Ann. I assume you are already aware that their daughter Rebecca was married to Thomas Gumaer. I also have Kuykendall's, Henry O. Kuykendall was married to Rachel Terwilliger, daughter of Matthew and Jane Walker Terwilliger. Jane Walker was a sister of another 2nd great grandfather, Thomas Walker. Thomas is buried in Poplar Grove, their parents, Charles and Martha Walker, are buried in Stanton (or Centennial).

yes, i aam familiar with Poplar Grove Cemetery. i photographed the Kuykendalls there last fall. the Gumaers & Kuykendalls are cousins. i have most of Sylvan & Centennial (aka Chester A. Stanton)Cemetery. have you contacted the Mamakating Historical Society? pls put "Centennial Cemetery" in your notes there maybe a change in the name of the Cemetery in the near future. most people don't know that Chester A. Stanton isnt buried in the Cemetery named for him - he's buried @ Sylvan. Ann Cudney's grave isnt that bad (nothing a dust of baking soda couldnt inhance- Darius' grave only tipped in the last 5 years or so.

if there is something is can help you with - pls feel free to ask.
Judy Gumaer Testa

Judy,

Thank you very much for your offer.

I have been there and was able to locate and photograph their gravestones. Ann's is still standing and rather worn and it takes a little imagination to make out the inscription. Darius' has fallen face forward and is thus protected somewhat from the elements and fairly well preserved. We lifted it to photograph it, then returned it to how we found it. Fortunately I had the transcription that Gertrude Barber put together, the stone for the gentlman adjacent to them in both her list and the cemetery is well preserved and was the clue that helped us find Ann and Darius. Since I have Ann's Bible with her handwritten family record, finding and visiting her grave site was a highlight for my genealogy quest. I'm curious if you have spent any time at Poplar Grove in Phillipsport? According to their obituaries, Darius' son James and 2nd wife Elethere Gray(my 2nd great grandparents) was buried there, but we've only been able to locate his 1st wife, Rachel. I have several other direct and indirect ancestors buried in both cemeteries.

Cheryl
P.S. I have since located new Cudney family members
decended from Martin Cudney my husbands great
grandfather from Kansas. Oral history in their family was
that our Cudneys originated in the Isle of Man
which is between England and Ireland...does anyone
out there have any oral history of this in their
line?
Cudner/Cudney

I purchased this at a Genealogy Shop in Wales. I have no idea of its authenticity but decided to post it for your evaluation and use. It contains few specifics but is semi-interesting.

CUDNER

The name of Cudner is Celtic in origin, arising from the rugged landscape of Wales. The name is directly derived from when the Cudner family lived on Cudmore Farm in Devonshire. The surname Cudner belongs to a large category of Anglo-Saxon habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads. Beautiful Wales, mountainous land of the red dragon and Eisteddfods and King Arthur gives us the distinguished surname of Cudner.

....The Cudner name shares its ancient history with the ancient Welsh chronicles. Bearers of this name were first found in Devonshire where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 AD.

From the early records hat were examined, manuscripts such as the Domesday Book, the Pipe Rolls, Hearth Rolls, the Black Book of the Exchequer, and the Curis Regis Rolls, the family name Cudner was found with many different spellings. Spelling variations of Cudner include Cudmore, Cadmore, Cadmoor, Cudmoor, Goodmore, Cudmor, Goodmer, Goodmoir, Cudmoir, and these changes in spelling frequently occurred, even between father and son. It was not uncommon for a person to be born with one spelling, marry with another, and have yet another on his or her headstone. Preference for a particular spelling variation could signify a connection with a certain branch of the family, a religious adherence, or an affiliation with a political party or faction. On the other hand, variations could also occurr due to regional dialects, translations back and forth between languages, and the way that the clerks and church officials of the day chose to record the spelling of a name.

The Norman Conquest of Wales in the 11th century was less than conclusive, in fact Wales was not actually subdued until the conquest of Edward I in 1301. .....

The distinguished Welsh family name of Cudner emerged in Devon. The name was first officially recorded in about the year 1200 in the county of Devonshire in southwest England. About this time the family name moved eastward to the southern counties of Essex and Suffolk, their family seat being at Kelvedon in Essex. Frequently at this time, the name was spelt Cudnor as well as Cudmore. The family name continue, however, to be seated at Temple and Loxbeare in the County of Devon and it was confirmed during the reign of James 1st of England, that the lands and estates of the Cudmores were their rightful entitlement, shown by the Heralds visitation of the year 1618. The family flourished on their many estates for the next two or three centuries. Prominent amongst the family during the late Middle Ages was Cudmore of Devon.

For the next two or three centuries the name Cudner flourished and played an important role in local county politics and in the affairs of Britain in general. ....

The Plantation of Ulster, in Ireland, by the British crown offered an opportunity for settlers to obtain land in exchange for pledging to remain Protestant. Those who immigrated to Ireland were granted lands previously owned by the native Catholic Irish. This distinguished family moved to Ireland during the Cromwellian invasion, settling in County Cork. ....

Immigrants to North America bearing the Cudner surname of one of its spelling variations include William Cudmore, a bonded passenger who arrived in Virginia in 1750; William Cutmore, who arrived in Virginia in 1764; Joshua Cutmore, who settled in Virginia in 1764; Daniel Cudmore, who arrived in New York, NY in 1832; John Cudmore, who was naturalized in Alleghany Co., PA in 1830; as well as Anne Cudmore, who settled in Detroit in 1854.....

The coat of arms found for a bearers of the Cudner surname did not include a motto. Under most heraldic authorities, a motto is an optional component of the coat of arms, and many families have chosen not to display a motto.

This is according to the Transcription by Gertrude Barber, made in 1929. I am aware of some typographical errors in her records, but this is what it has for this family:

Isaiah Cudney died 2 August 1859, age 52.
Clarissa, daughter of Isaiah and Marinda, died 23 November 1863, age 15 years, 25 days.
Marinda, wife of Isaiah and daughter of John St. John, died 14 November 1849, age 38 years, 8 months.

Clarissa St. John, wife of John, died 11 November 1851, age 68 years.
John St. John, born 23 August 1783, died 5 April 1872.

I have not had the opportunity to look for land records or wills.

Further update and clarification. It seems that the Isaiah CUDNEY referenced here is the Isaiah Cudney b. c. 1802 and Son of Isaiah Cudney (c.1753) Grandson of Mikiah (b.c. 1720). The US NY , Sullivan co. Mamakating 1850 census has Isaiah Cudney aged 47, with several children ranging from 21 to age 1 (Clarissa, age 1). But no wife listed. Thus it seems Marinda may have died in 1850. Isaiah and family lived next door to John and Clarissa St. John in the 1850 census.

This is wonderful information. I have several old family pictures taken in Port Colburne. Also, my grandfather's name is William Hartley Cudney. My research tracks my family from the Niagra area to St. Catherines and Buffalo, NY. Harmon, SR. served in the Civil War in the NY infantry. So there was a great deal of border crossing. I have tracked him to Ulster County, which suggests a relationship to the New York Cudney's as well as the Canada Cudney's. I wonder if the Maitland Harmon in Port Colburne is not actually my great grandfather. I have seen the names transposed in other records, so that makes the info even more valuable!

There was a "Maitland Harmon Cudney" who lived in Port Colburne area of Niagara Ontario. Son of Wiliam H. 1847-1920 grand son of Joseph 1794- gg-son of Ezikiel Cudney UE 1758-1815.

Thus the unusual names Harmon and Maitland simply transposed suggests a close link of some sort to the Lincoln County Ontario Cudneys.

Sarah Cudney, wife of William Landon of Burford, Ontario

William Landon, b. 1828 Burford, Ontario married Sarah Cudney abt 1850 there. They had children: Charles 1850, John (twin) 1850, and Nelson 1855 -- all born near Burford. Sarah may have died at Nelson's birth as William married second to Sarah Weir abt 1856 and moved his family to Michigan. They settled in Sanilac Co, MI and I have found an Ezekiel Cudney lived nearby at about the same time. I am wondering if Sarah and Ezekiel could be brother and sister? Anyone help here?

Re: Cudney origin

Just recently I found members of our Cudney line. The were told oral history of origins from the Isle of Man. It is between England and Ireland. Does anyone else have oral history in their family re: the Isle of Man? Has any of this Cudney group considered the familytreedna test? If you are ~ I believe it is best to only test for the Y DNA as the other ~ Mtdna is not helpful for genealogy ~ the maternal dna goes back thousands of years. It will also save $ if you only test for the Y DNA (male line) It is also best to test for a minimum of 37 markers. The more markers you test for, the closer you can match another Cudney in generations. I believe the 37 marker test can get within 7 generations.

There have been a number of postings regarding the Cudney's in New York. Is there any information on their origin in Europe? Wales?
