Re: Celso and Pedro Cuellar

I forgot to add...I have a Celso Cuellar in my family, he would be my great great uncle. His sister's name, my great grandmother, was Aurora Cuellar. Their parents would have been Domingo Cuellar (or perhaps even Pedro) and Trindad Diaz and other siblings of Celso and Aurora are Domingo Cuellar, Juan Cuellar, Rosabra Thais, Salamon (or Salomon) Cuellar, Josephita Tafoya, and Samuel Cuellar. From my knowledge my great grandmother, Aurora, was born in San Marcial, New Mexico. In the link provided from my previous post, there was an Aurora Cuellar, born in 1897 in Canada Alamosa, NM, which is about 4 hrs away from San Marcial. I don't know her exact birth year but she passed away in her 50's around 1952 in Los Angeles, which makes 1897 as her birth year about right. However, the other information doesn't seem right other than the link with a sibling of Salomon and the mother Maria Trindad Diaz, except for the Maria. The father and female siblings are different, unless in the father's case Domingo or Pedro was a middle name that was left out??

Other info:
Juan Cuellar had 8 children:
Jack Cuellar
Joe Cuellar
Paul Cuellar
Elosia Gonzales, née Cuellar
Josefina Jaramillio, née Cuellar
Helen Ramirez, née Cuellar
Adelia Lopez, née Cuellar
Rosie Lopez, née Cuellar

Salamon (alt. Salomon) Cuellar had 6 children:
Isabel Arellanez, née Cuellar
Arencio Cuellar
Arthur Cuellar
Leonce (alt. Leonse) Cuellar
Pete Cuellar
Rose Gonzales, née Cuellar

Rosabra Thais, née Cuellar had 3 children:
Escolastico Thais
Trinidad Thais
Willie Thais Jr.

Josephita (alt. Josefita) Tafoya, née Cuellar (1883 ?-1944 ?) had 8 children:
Beatrice (alt. Beatriz) Baca, née Tafoya
Manuelita Garcia, née Tafoya
Anselmo Tafoya
Cipriano Tafoya
Estansaldo Tafoya
Juan Tafoya
Max Tafoya
Vivien Tafoya

Samuel Cuellar (1891 ?-1952 ?) had 3 children:
Caroline Cuellar
Sonny Cuellar
Alvira Hitt, née Cuellar

Celso (alt. Selso) (1900 ? - 1957 ? ) no kids recorded

Domingo Cuellar ( - 1987) no kids

Aurora Cuellar had 7 children:
Henrietta L. Waterman, , née Avalos
Adelia Bravo
Jesus Griego
Lillian Griego
Ramona Rivas
Maria Estella Rivas
Ruben Rivas

Hi-My grandmother, Delfina Cortez (b.1904), was sister to Hermania Cortes, we called her Tia Mini. I'm researching the Cortes side, and Eduardo Cortez Sr., their grandfather was born in San Antonio, in 1848. I don't know of any family in Mexico. Do you have anymore info on Eduardo? Pictures? I don't remember your father Jose Carlos but I do remember Yolanda and Yamatha. Tia Mini and my grandmother Delfina looked like twins, Mini being younger. The last time I saw your grandmother was at my grandma's funeral in '83.

Hope to hear from you. Glenda

She was born and raised in Los Angeles to the best of my knowledge. Her father was Jesus Cuellar and her mother was Juanita. Her father was born in Tacubaya. All I know about Jesus Cuellar is that he died in a duel in Mexico City. Leonor had a sister named Luz and a brother named Jesus. She died in Laredo, Texas around 1952. My Email address is lisaBinAZ@yahoo.com

The first white man into Mexico was
Hernando Cortez in the year 1519. Columbus discovered America in 1492 (explored Caribbean Islands) but not Mexico proper. The Mass Exodus began in the year when Ferdinand and Isabella, King and Queen of Spain, issued several decrees abolishing any and all Jews. This happens to be the same year that the Inquisition was launched. The Jews had 3 choices: (1) Death by burning. (2) Mass conversion to Catholicism. (3) Mass expulsion and an exodus, mainly to Mexico. The Mexican Jews finally reached the Texas-Mexico border lands...but did not cross over until about 1700 (In extremely small numbers). I am a Cuellar decent by way of Camargo (1771) where we received a Royal Land Grant for 450,000 acres of most of southern Cameron County.

If I may be of any further help please contact me at the following e-mail address.

Verle E.
Hello Pat,I just read this old message from you.I had not vistited this web site in a while.I have been tracing my ancestors on the Ladder day saints web site family search.
I have found out of some of my ancestors that go back to the
1830s.My gggrandfather was Prudencio Cuellar, and he had two sons,Melecio and Viviano Cuellar. His wife was Dolores
Flores.I am not sure about his birthplace,it could be in
Guanajuato,or in Jalisco.Your family is probably the Lisarraraz y Cuellar family, who settled in Revilla or later Guerrero Viejo. My grandfather used to say we were from Guerrero, but there is a Guerrero state near Acapulco. They did live in Agualeguas around late 1800s or before 1910.Not sure how they got there. My ggrandfather lived in Monterrey
in the late 1800s and had children born there. His wife was Gregoria Flores.I need to know more about my family for sure
because I am into history and the oldest Cuellars were De Cuellar, and came with Cortez in 1519.I think there were three. The Cuellars from Guerrero descended from Anna De Cuellar which might have been daughter of one of the Cuellars who came with Cortez. His name was Juan De Cuellar.
There were other Cuellar who came later, thats why I need to know becuase some Cuellars who came later were of Jewish descendancy. They used the Cuellar surname to hide their religion since there were being prosecuted in Spain.

I read your inquiry on whether the Cuellar last name is a Jewish last name. The information I have is from a genealogy
specialist from Spain.According to him if your ancestors used only Cuellar as the last name it is probable that they did have Jewish ancestry. If they used De Cuellar then they are Spaniards who came from Villa De Cuellar,Spain, and could have come from nobility as most of these Cuellares were knights during the Crusades.
