Descendents of James Cullen from Oldcastle, Meath, Ireland who married Sarah Murtagh

Seeking information on the parents, siblings and descendents of James cullen born in 1857 in Oldcastle, Meath in Ireland, and who married a Sarah Murtagh (1856-1936). Possible they may have been married in Argentina in 1882. Also possible that this was Sarah Murtagh second marriage, possible first marriage to a Andrew Quinn. James (or his parents) had a farm in Ranaghan, between Castlepollard and Collinstown in Westmeath. James and Sarah had 11 children all born around Collinstown. Any information no matter how small would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Dear 'cousins'

I'm Lillie Robertson in Houston Texas, related to Bryan Cullen through my grandfather Hugh Roy Cullen.

I have found a land deed from around 1714 that states that Bryan Cullen received a parcel of land (through a sponsor John Moseley who paid his passage to Virginia) the parcel wasin Lynhaven Parish in the County of Princess Anne, 103 acres being and lying in an island named Pine Island Crook? hard to read (checking the parish on a map makes the parcel in North Carolina today)

I'll link the document on when I receive a good copy of it.

I researched that area and indeed John Moseley was very active in a church in the Lynnhaven Parish of Princess Anne County of the Colony of Virginia so Bryan Cullen of North Carolina and Virginia are one and the same.

I'm trying to track down where he came from. I understand the ship he was on might have come from France. no idea beyond that.

You say your grandfather's real name is Willard Cullen? That is interesting! This David Lambertson, was a medical doctor? Cause Melville Daniels, who apparently adopted the two sons of his second wife who was a Cullen, was a doctor too.
He specialized in holistic medicine. This particular Cullen family were performers in the circus, they were gymnists. Walter H. Cullen AKA Willard later became some kind of architect.

Edward Cullen, father(?) of Mary in Albany mid to late 1800s.

A couple years ago, I posted asking about a Mary Cullen, born about 1855, living in Albany NY according to the 1880 census. She was my great grandmother. I have an update on new evidence, but still looking for proof. Hoping someone may have come across her as a sister, cousin, or whatever.

In the 1880 census, she was listed a servant working in the home of a banker named Martin, living at 152 State Street. My great grandfather William Henry Armstrong also worked in the house.

I have a birth certificate for my grandfather, Frederick Martin Armstrong, born March 4, 1884, listing Mary Cullen, age 28, born in “US” as the mother. The father is William Henry Armstrong, age 25. It gives the address as 99 Third Ave in Albany.

Interesting twist… The 1884 city directory shows an Edward Cullen living at the same address; his occupation is laborer. I follow him in the city directory at that address from 1873 to 1889. He is gone after that.

Going back…starting in 1861 we see an Edward Cullen, watchman, at 99 Van Vechten. Same in 1862. In 1863, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68 he is a laborer at the same address. He’s gone in 69, and back in 70, 71, and 72.

I don’t see him in the 1880 federal census.

In the 1870 federal census, I see a Mary Cullen, age 14, working as a servant in the home of a family named Riley in Albany; I don’t find an Edward Cullen who is a likely candidate.

In the 1860 Census, there is an Edward Cullen, age 48, laborer. He’s married to Ann, age 44, with children Mary, and Bridget ages 6 and 4. Both adults were born in Ireland and both kids born in NY.

Does anyone know of these Cullens in Albany?
Hi Sara,

So interesting to find you. I am searching for information about this family. Walter F. Cullen was my great grandfather (Edward J. Cullen)'s brother.

I know very little about this side of the family--my middle name is Cullen, though, so I have always been interested in learning more about them.

I am also a part of a big effort to complete a tree of the first of this Cullen line to come from Ireland. I'm not sure if you are interested in any of that, but I am happy to share--and there is much to share.

Anyhow, do let me know what you are interested in learning about this family. Your original message was posted in 2007, so thanks for the patience!

It seems that your branch is from your grandfather John. I do not have any information about him or his children, so I am eager to learn more about their stories.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

-Craig T.

Re: Major news from DNA project re Wicklow Cullen family

Just came across your message March of last year. I go back to my 3rd Great Grandfather Jeremiah Cullen, wife Catherine and daughter Mary. Jeremiah was b abt 1793 - 1800. Not sure where. The 1824 Tithe shows a Jeremiah in Grangecon, Baltinglass, Dublin and Kildare. 1851 Shows the family in Grangecon, Ballynure, Wicklow. They are living in a house and 6 acres owned by Pierce David Mahoney. I believe he may have been the Gardner since that's what he put as his occupation in the US. A descendant of David Mahoney, Peter Tynan Mahony a irish genealogist gave a lecture on Irish genealogy to our club. After, I went to talk with him about the pictures of Dubuque, Iowa he used. I'm from Dubuque. He asked what my Irish names were and when I told him he said he knew my Grandmoter. He also told me we were cousins and and to keep looking for our connection and then contact him. It took me 20 years to find it and by then Peter had passed away. His brother Dave Allen the comedian had also passed and I have no one to confirm. I know from genealogy Peter left on the Internet, (He didn't like the LDS and put nothing on there) that he had an ancestor named Andrew Cullen a GGGrandfather. Andrew married Mary Kelly and a Catherine Cullen was witness. This has to be the connection but just not sure how brother or cousin.

Jermiah left Grangecon in 1852 on the ship Boracy for Quebec. From there they walked to OH and spent a couple of years there and by 1857 daughter Mary marries Michael Gilligan of Dubuque Co. Iowa.

I keep hoping to find some one from Peter's family that can supply the information I need to show the connection.

Thank you for reading this book.
Marilyn

Hope you still are on the same email.
My Cullen line is in Grangecon, Ballynure, Wicklow. They live on the land owned by David Mahoney. They are most likely related to the Mahoney family. They have connections in both Northern Wicklow and Dublin. There are also 2 other Cullen families in the area. I don't know if they are related but I would assume so. Jeremiah, Catherine Cullen and daughter Mary all came to the US in 1852. They sailed from New Ross to Quebec Canada. From there they walked down into Ohio where they spent a couple of years (no records of this) and by 1857 they are in Dubuque co. Iowa where Mary marries Michael Gilligan. Jeremiah and Catherine lived their lives out with Mary and family.

I'm looking for any information for Peter Cullen. Born around 1861 in I believe, Tipperary. Married Catherine Corcoran in 1886 in Montreal. Shows up in Joliet, IL. by 1888 where he raises his family and passes away in 1930. I see all the Cullen posts on here but none really lead to my line of Cullens in Joliet.

Think he may have been a career Navy man. Don't know a thing about this though.
WAlter lived for some time in "Little" Nahant MA and married Ester Ahlkuist(her 2nd marriage so this may be her 1st husbands surname). Walter and Ester had no children. But I know Ester had 2 sons. one died in ww11 (or Korea)

By 1953 they were living on Meadowbrook Lane in Reading MA.

Here I'd like any information on Walter & if possible Ester's parents & sibblings. I think Ester had a sister or 1/2 sister living in St Louis Missouri.

Walter died Nov 14 1962 in Winchester MA(hospital I believe)
Ester died in 1977 I think in a nursing home in Melrose MA.
Walter I know is buried at Holy Cross in Malden MA.

Its possible he may have been born there(Malden) as well sometime in 1899, early 1900.

Sorry to be so long winded.

Amy help very much appreicated.

Barbara

There are no more Cullen's in the Chipman line. Cullen is not the family name. Chipman is. Theodore and Edwin Cullen's father was Edwin Cullin Chipman. He assumed the name Edward Cullen, he had debts he couldn't pay and changed his name. Although he did amass large amounts of land in Alabama under the name Edward Cullen, he died young and did not get his chance to correct the name change. Edwin Chipman Cullen was my 3rd great grandfather. Our Chipman goes to Vermont with Edwin's father Nathaniel Chipman. It was quite the adventure when I found out we were not Cullens at all.

Hello Victoria,

My ggrandfather was Theodore J. Cullen and his brother was George W. Cullen. I know that Edwin Chatman Cullen ended up in McNeal, Arizona and is buried in the McNeal Cemetary with a Mrs. Cullen buried next to him. I have found a death certificate saying that his mother was Virginia Chatman and his father was George Cullen from Texas. He died of natural causes in May 1,1948. His death certificate was signed by an Annice?? Portzline of McNeal, AZ.

I also found a Pirtleville, Cochise County AZ Census from 1910 which had Edwin with his wife and daughter. There was an Isac W. Guiton listed as an uncle.

There is also a Cochise County AZ Census from 1930 that has Edwin at age 68.

There is a Eugene C. Portzline that is in a census from 1930 McNeal, Cochise County, AZ that, I think has Edwin C. Cullen's daugher and granddaughers. The oldest daugher is Ethel Virgina and the her husband's name was Jacob Edwin Rogers. You may want to check on this information as it has been a while since I went thru this line of the family.

Would be happy to answer any questions that I can.

I'm on to seeing if we have to follow the Chipman line to find the rest of our Cullen's!! :-)

Becky Gaines

P.S.

Edwin C. Cullen had a cousin named Edwin Hudspeth Cullen working at a ranch no far from him. This was Theodore J. Cullen's son and my great uncle.

We are related. We share the same great great grandparents - John (or Tom?) Cullen and Anna (Murphy) Cullen. Your great grandfather was William John (?) Cullen who was the brother of my great grandfather John Cullen. I have been stuck on this branch of my tree for more than five years, and its so great to make a connection. Also, I'd like to discuss Daniel D. Cullen further with you. I have a copy of his death certificate and his will. Do you have any clue what town in Ireland these Cullen were from? Could you please contact me through my email at: maxwellk8320@gmail.com.

Patrick CULLEN b. 1837 Co Carlow IRE - d. 1895 NM & Felicita

Seeking information on Patrick CULLEN born 6 Feb 1837 in County Carlow, Ireland, and died 19 Sep 1895 in Golden, Santa Fe Co, NM.

He had a brother named Matthew CULLEN who erected Patrick's tombstone in Golden NM. Matthew probably was a real estate agent in Nye Co NV in 1870, then moved to Salt Lake City UT. Several miners in Nye Co, including Patrick, moved on to the mines in Golden NM.

There's also a Felicita CULLEN buried at Golden. She was born 24 Jun 1871 and died 5 Nov 1947. I can't identify her at all.

Is this Patrick CULLEN the one who married Tuburcia CEDILLO/SEDILLO in 1875 at Santa Clara, Mora Co, NM?

Who are the parents of Patrick, Matthew and Felicita, their siblings, spouses, etc.? Any clues?

Cullen family

I am searching once again for any descendants of new info on my Cullen family from Ramsgate. They were fisherman. I am very keen to find descendants of my 2xgreat uncle William Cullen born to parents Stephen and Esther in Canterbury Kent in 1830. He was older brother to my 2xgreatgrandfather Edward born 1838. William went to Ramsgate and first married Maryann Mummery but she died. No children found. William later married Harriett Ann Woodward nee Scoates of Ramsgate. I believe Harriett had 1 daughter Henrietta Woodward born 1873 who is down on 1881 census as Cullen. Children of William and Harriett were. Alice Rose, Jessie Florence, Daisy Mabel. William, and Ethel May. William and Harriett married in 1879 in Greenwich but returned to Ramsgate to live. William owned several fishing smacks, named Hettie, William and Rose, Eagle and Lord Napier. The wreck of the Lord Napier has recently been found by divers off the Devon coast. My greatgrandad Edward Cullen was the master of them. William died aged 56 in 1886 and Harriett remarried Henry Howard. William was living at 7 Spencer Square when he died. If anyone knows of this family please do get in touch.
