Sorry Bette is ill. Maybe I will drop her a line and introduce myself. Don't know if she will remember my mom. Like I said I was 5 and that was exactly 40 years ago since any of us have been back there (telling my age!!) My mother Grace married a man from NM so that's where we grew up. Oklahoma isn't that far away but dad drove race cars as a hobby and going racing was our vacation.
Well it's a small world. My grandfather was George Edward Howell, Bessie's brother. He passed away in 1992 here in Bakersfield. My mother is George's daughter Grace.

I am stuck on the Culver line. I have quite a bit on the Howell's. All I have is that Paralee's parents were Martin Van Buren Culver b: October 7, 1840 in Maxwell, Alabama. Her mother was Elizabeth Reese b: May 1844 in Jackson Co., Alabama. I don't have death dates or places. Married 28th December 1865 in Jackson Co. AL. Someone told me that Martin's parents were Nathaniel Culver and Susan Willis, both born about 1812 in Kentucky.

Elizabeth's father was suppose to be Martin Reese and mother Elizabeth Buttrey. Don't have any of Elizabeth's siblings.

I have lots of holes and would sure like to compare notes. Love to catch up on the family. Was only in Oklahoma to see Grandpa and Grandma Howell (when I was 5) I have pictures of them later on in life. The family is so big it's hard to keep up with everyone.

E-mail me directly at tickers96@yahoo.com

DEB

Thank you for your reply to my message post. Don't remember what I had on it now as that was a while back. In 1990 I bought a Culver Cadet aircraft and became interested in the history of the Corporation and the Culver family in as much as the Corporation was family owned. My e-mail is Culver292@aol.com.
What information I have on the family came from Charles Jamieson, who went to work for Culver in 1938. Would be pleased to hear from you.
Stan Piteau

I have been Mrs. Knight K. Culver III for almost 40 years. Our son is Knight K. Culver IV. You have a lot of information. Where did you get it. It is mostly correct. What other info are you looking for?
Both of our sons ended up in aviation. Our son Josh has a ton of old family history and is especially interested in avation information.

There was the Knight K. Culver family who were from around the Columbus, Ohio area. Was connected to the Culver Military Acadamy. There was Knight Sr. and Knight K. Culver Jr. They were in the boat building bussiness; i.e. Dart Manufacturing, also got into building airplanes. The Dart airplanes were built at the Port Columbus airport. Built about 50 of them. Al Mooney was Culver's chief engineer and he also designed another aircraft built by Culver. It was called the Culver Cadet. Seventy five were built at Port Columbus before Culver Aircraft moved to Wichita, KS in 1940.
I have heard the story about Knight Jr marrying a prominent banker's daughter. The marrage didn't last and a messy divorce caused a rift between the families. It is said that this was part of the reason for the move to Wichita, as well as the fact Culver needed more room then was available at Port Columbus.
I'm interested in the history of the Culver Cadets so any information I can learn about the Kight k. Culvers would be of interest to me.

John Culver - Delaware County, Ohio

Please forgive what is probably a very simple set of questions regarding John Culver of Delaware County, Ohio. I have been attempting to sort through quite a bit of data on this family and ascertain what has basis in records.

It seems that the base-line source of information on this family is found in a biography of John's son, Bazel, in the 1880 History of Delaware County, Ohio that gives the following: "B CULVER farmer and merchant P.O Condit, son of John and Catharine Johnson Culver. His father was born about 1770 in New Jersey and came to Ohio in 1811 and died in 1823. His mother was born in Pennsylvania about 1779 and came to Ohio with her husband after his death she married Mr Beard and moved with him to Missouri she had twelve children by her first marriage three of whom now survive."

John Culver appears on the 1820 census of Delaware County.

A number of trees online list 12 named children of John and Catharine Culver with very specific birthdates ranging from 1793-1817. I suspect that this listing probably has some root in a family Bible record. Does anyone know the source of these dates? At the few points where I've been able to verify this data, it matches.

A number of Culvers appear on the 1830 census of Delaware County, Ohio.

In 1840, much of the family appears on the census of Amanda Township, Allen County, Ohio. This includes William Culver (who reportedly married Sally Meeker and later Savannah Place and ultimately moved to Daviess County, MO); John Culver (who married Phoebe Place and died in Allen County, OH); and Orange Culver (who married Esther Point and died in Allen or Putnam County, Ohio before 1850). Victor Beard is also listed amongst these Culvers, so I am suspecting that this is the Mr. Beard whom their mother married after John Culver's death.

It seems reasonable to assume that these three brothers (William, John, and Orange) were sons of John and Catharine along with Bazel, who remained in Delaware County.

It also seems reasonable to assume that Susan Culver (who married James Place and died in Allen County, Ohio) is indeed the youngest daughter of this family.

I also make the undocumented assumption that Sarah Elizabeth Culver, wife of James Meeker, who died prior to 1850, was another sister. Several of their children later settled in Amanda Township, Allen County and lived close to the John Culver family. I descend from this family and my elderly relatives remembered the Culvers as "relatives."

However, other than the relationship of Bazel Culver to John and Catharine that is loosely documented in the History of Delaware County, I do not know of any primary sources that directly list the children of John and Catharine.

Is anyone aware either of a primary sourcing for the widespread list of children with birthdates OR a will/land records in Delaware County, Ohio or Daviess County, Missouri (where Catharine Culver Beard died in 1848) that confirm the children?

The Culvers tie in many ways to the family of Daniel and Esther (Meeker) Point of Delaware and Allen Counties, Ohio and the family of Timothy Meeker of Delaware County, Ohio.

I would welcome the opportunity to interact on any of these families and am most happy to share what I have.

Thank you.

Thanks, so much for your input, Jim. I, for one, am a novice who doesn't mind your guidance! I'm not sure but I think with your explanation when I get to John Culver 1693-1766 m Mary Martha Coppinger 1717-1755 on my tree, I should not move forward. I, too, am one of those who went "wild" when I recently started with ancestry and am now trying to "clean" my tree up. In doing so, which is recent, I could not find the connection to Margaret Burrows and had taken her off. But I haven't "cleaned" beyond that---which I need to do with all my branches. My husband family link is with the Culver's. His grandmother was Hetti B. Culver McQueen. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/23997791/family I would appreciate any advice from your years of experience.

Greetings, Jim.

Excuse the tone of my posts. It was not my intent to register disapproval of your actions; it my tone came across as such then I offer my heartfelt apologies.

I share your frustration with the amount of bad information floating about, and also your dedication to higher standards -- a dedication I share, at least in theory, though in practice I often fall far short. It seems at times I spend eighty percent of my time online sorting through bad stuff.

My intent was simply to register an alternative point of view, from someone who has found attempts to correct others' errors perhaps more frustrating than just wading silently through them; even when there's an actual person behind the information (just try to getting anything over at FamilySearch corrected, for example).

It also sounds like you were blessed with several dedicated genealogists in your family. In my own branches, while there were several family historians dedicated to family history, their dedication to sourcing and verification was rather less -- for many of the reasons I mentioned in my previous posts. Verified or not, their work has been both an inspiration and a foundation for my own.

It has been my experience that lazy family historians far outnumber conscientious genealogists, that that was true even long before the Internet appeared, and that the Internet has allowed both the good and the bad stuff to flourish. Sure, bad information abounds, but the good genealogist will -- as he always has -- see right past it to the good stuff anyway. The bad genealogists, at least IMO, seem like they just can't be bothered.

On the other hand, it seems as if you've had better luck in your efforts than I ever did. My sincere congratulations, and again, my apologies for any negativity in my tone. I tried not to, but it appears I've failed.

Cheers,
--Nathanael

Re: John Culver of Somerset's Father

I received a reply to a similar request in another thread. I decided to post that response here as well. This helps explain the reason from my original letter in this thread.
Jim Culver

-------------------------
Hello Nathanael or Calvin. Thanks for writing,

I was around the Internet doing research about 15 years ago when the Nathaniel Culver/Margaret Burroughs parental assertion first appeared. I saw it take off from one person's innuendo to hundreds of amateur genealogists taking it as fact and disseminating it across Ancestry.com and the Internet in general. My position is: If there are ABSOLUTELY NO records to support a connection, it is probably incorrect.

Personally, I was the recipient of a LOT of the hard-earned research you mentioned by two particular ladies (both now deceased)and a gentlemen (he has stopped answering too), all in their late 80's who wanted to pass their research along to a Culver researcher who cared about keeping it accurate as they did.

One of the ladies would lecture me in monthly 10 page letters about the importance of verifying information as she did for many years. She abhorred the concept of the Internet and lazy research. I suppose I got that from her.

I have the books by Fredrick Lathrop Culver, Valerie Dyer-Giorgi, and the excellent work by Lorena Martin Spillers. Only Mrs. Spillers writes about my John Culver of Somerset line. The other two descend from Edward.

I would love to believe that our two lines are connected, but without proof I decline to say anything other than what Mrs. Spillers said:(quotation at the bottom of this note).

I realized when I wrote them that my letters and efforts to get this corrected would be difficult and perhaps even fruitless. However, the overall response was much better than I expected. Most people realize that they just copied someone's work to find their roots and have no particular pride of authorship. They corrected their records, or said they did.

Bad information on the Internet is like attempting to put out a wildfire, somewhere between difficult and impossible. But I had to try.

In dozen's of those genealogies you mentioned, I see little details (even typos), that indicate someone else copied my research verbatim. I don't mind that. My only objections is that my research is never complete, and if I find a serious error in my research, I have no way of correcting all the copies out there.

Perhaps I was just a tiny bit incensed that those people copied someone else's research instead of mine.

It is difficult to judge the tone of your letters, other than you disapprove of me attempting to get these errors corrected. Personally, I applaud anyone who attempts to do so.

Good Luck in your research.
Regards,
Jim Culver of Gholson, TX

-------------------------------------------------
1786 Nathan (1746-1828)Had a Visitor
Source: Lorena Martin Spillers book - Some Descendants of John Culver of Somerset Maryland - 1963.

In 1786, before he moved to Georgia, Nathan had a visitor, John Culver (1758-?), a 28 year old relative from Sussex County, New Jersey who came to live for the summer. That summer John met Sarah Bailey the daughter of George and Frances Bailey of Somerset County. The story goes that the Bailey family planned to move to North Carolina in 1786 and that John went with them. Sarah and John were married in North Carolina. In 1796 they moved to Sevier County, Tennessee. John died 23 November 1836 and is buried in Bedford County, Tennessee. Sarah died 23 October 1843. There is a plaque in at the Bedford County Court House honoring Revolutionary War soldiers. John's name is listed.

The question about this John Culver is how he was related to Nathan. John's lineage leads to Edward Colver (1610-1685), but how are these families connected. John's father was John Culver (about 1729-?) and his mother was Abigail Crassman. His grandfather was John Culver (about 1704-1733) and his grandmother was Freelove Lamb.

Ah, and one further point that seems important to make.

It's really largely due to the Internet that those of us who DO care CAN care. Undoubtedly the biggest reason the family historians of a generation ago didn't bother with sourcing was because the vast majority of them *couldn't* bother with sourcing. In an age where the kind and quality of sourcing you and I care about involved cross-country treks, endless trips to and from post offices, and enough phone calls to qualify for our own branch exchange, it was the rare family historian who had the time or resources (particularly of a monetary nature) quality research demanded. For the vast majority of folk, that mimeographed copy of Aunt Amanda's tome was enough. If we bothered to wonder about the accuracy of her work, we quickly realized it was beyond our means to check, anyway.

It's only with the dawn of the Internet that we have access to all those thousands upon thousands of Aunt-Amanda-type research notes (albeit now in electronic form), and it's only through cross-comparison and access through resources we didn't have thirty years ago that we've begun to realize how unreliable Aunt Amanda's work, largely through no fault of her own, could be

So perhaps the fact that we can even contemplate holding today's blue-collar family historians to higher standards than we ever demanded of Aunt Amanda is yet another reflection of the great boon the Internet has been to the modern genealogist.

--Nathanael Culver

Respectfully, if I'd gotten that message from you, I'd probably have ignored it.

I *have* received several such messages regarding various information I've posted, and my reaction is generally one of scepticism if it arrives without counter-evidence and relying simply on "because I say so"s. Yeah, my information may not be the most reliable, but what makes yours any better? You need to make your case, not just assert it.

Keep in mind that not everyone posting family trees on Ancestry.com is a dedicated, conscientious genealogist who cares about the finer points of Elizabeth Shown Mills. An awful lot of folks here are just hoarders, interested in quantity, not quality.

Is that wrong? Well, yeah, to those of us who DO care about the quality of our research, it can be annoying having to sift through a couple of dozen family trees which have apparently simply copied from each without regard to sourcing.

But as I look at my own genealogy shelves, I see they're stuffed full of privately produced family genealogies -- you know, the hand-typed documents of a generation ago, long on mimeographed reproductions of newspaper obituaries, badly photocopied family photos and stuffed full of family group sheets without a hint of sourcing to be found. In fact, I have several professionally published books that are exactly the same -- such as those by, say, Frederick Lathrop Colver, or Valerie Dyer-Giorgi (though the quality of their photo reproductions is undoubtedly higher).

Such works are the backbone of my own genealogical research (not to mention genealogical libraries around the country). I don't disdain them for lack of sourcing, I rely on them as starting points for further research. The only real differences between Lathrop Colver and Dyer-Giorgi and the family trees appearing on Ancestry.com are that there are a lot more Ancestry.com trees, and that previous generations committed their (unsourced) information to print rather than electrons. Rather than sifting through a stack of photocopied sheets stuffed into a brown manilla folder sitting in my mailbox, today I sift through a dozen online family trees -- then run off to an online library (e.g., Ancestry.com) to verify what I've found.

Coincidentally, just today I received a reply from a woman with a family tree on Ancestry whose information appeared strangely familiar. Turns out that, yes, indeed, she is working from a copy of the same privately produced family genealogy I have sitting on my own shelves, and is busy putting it online. Because I am by nature a lazy guy, I'm now busy copying all that information from her tree rather than re-entering it myself. So when I source it, does it really matter who I cite? Is the information less reliable because I pulled it from an (unsourced) Ancestry family tree rather than a photocopy of a (equally unsourced) hand-typed piece of paper?

Trying to police Ancestry.com and hold everybody else up to the genealogical standards you and I subscribe to is probably a lost cause. In today's electronic age casual genealogists can copy each other's trees far faster than we can send out emails. Treat them as modern-day Dyer-Giorgis: a great (and grateful) place to kickstart a serious investigation.

Compared to the way we did genealogical research thirty years ago -- long roadtrips to genealogical libraries half way across the country; endless letters written to decades-old mailing addresses, and endless weeks waiting for replies that never came; expensive long-distance phone calls to outdated phone numbers trying to track down sources or further information -- we're living in a golden age of genealogy. The Internet (and specifically sites like Ancestry.com) not only makes research easy -- I can do far more today from the comfort of my own study than I ever could sitting for endless hours behind the wheel of a car or cradling a phone in my hand -- but gives me instantaneous access to far more information than nearly any genealogical library I've ever been to.

Sifting through a few unsourced (and even error-filled; but then what source sitting on my shelves is error-free?) online trees seems a small price to pay. And whenever I start to feel I'm drowning in unreliable hand-me-down information, I remind myself that's the way genealogical research has always been. After all, where do you think the online information came from?

--Nathanael Culver

Photo of unknown Culver or Scott Relative abt 1900

I have a photo of an unknown woman whom I know is a close relative to my grandmother Lois Culver Portwood Holden. I have the photo attached to Elizabeth Scott (b 1826 Guernsey OH) in my tree and am hoping someone recognizes who she is. I think she might be a sister to Elizabeth Scott who was married to Edward Culver (b 1829 Guernsey OH). I am almost certain it is not Elizabeth since she passed at only 58 years and the woman in the photo is definitely older than 58. She could also be a sister of Elizabeth Scott's daughter Harriet Elizabeth Culver Portwood (b 1861, Illinois). I would also love to determine if anyone has photos of Elizabeth Scott Culver's daughters. Please take a peek at the photo if this part of the Culver family is in your tree.
Since writing this, I have identified John Culver's son by his first wife, Mary Moor, their only child. He was David Culver born ca. 1822, died before 1850. He married Lydia Ann Helyer in Morgan Co. OH, 1844.

1850, Morgan Co. OH
David M Culver 28 Tailor 150 b. OH
Lydia Culver 27 Oh [sic]
Mary Culver 5 OH
John Culver 3 OH
Robert Culver 5/12 OH
Benj Lyons 29 merchant b. OH

In 1853, Lydia married an Isaac Kipp. In a 1900 record at the soldiers' home in Danville OH, a John Culver, born in Guernsey Co. 1848, named Frank Kipp as his nearest relative. Frank Kipp was the son of Lydia Helyer and Isaac Kipp, John Culver's half brother.

In 1860, this John Culver, age 12, was living with his grandfather, John Culver, in Guernsey Co. OH. By 1900 he was a widower, apparently had no children, he died 24 April 1911 in the hospital in Danville and is buried in the soldier's home cemetery.

David Culver's daughter Mary may be the Mary Culver who married Joseph Brown in Guernsey Co. OH 11 Jun 1867. No further info on them.

Yes, I agree. Manchester is next on my list. I was there many years ago but I don't think I had the information that I have now. So it is worth a shot to re-look.

I'll let you know what I find, if anything. Not sure when I'll get there but I should do it when everything is fresh (fresher) in my mind.
Lynn
