If you are looking for the Cumberlands that were in SW DC until the early 20th century, I am the descendant of one of them. My great-grandparents are John Riley Cumberland and his wife Delilah, who had 11 children (my grandfather being the 10th of them and the sole surviving sibling). Please email me if you think this is the right family; there is a woman in Potomac, Maryland who has put together a rather extensive tree.

Hi. I'm married to Riley Thomas Cumberland, great-grandson of John Riley & Delilah, grandson of John Riley ("Bud") Cumberland, deceased, of Arlington, VA. I'm working on my husband's genealogy as well as my own.

My grandmother was a Cumberland. It sounds like your husband and I have a common ancestor in William Edwin Cumberland b. abt 1770 in England. My line descends from his son Charles, while your husband's line is through his son John. I'd be happy to share whatever I know with you.

I have read in other posts of a book entitled "History of the Cumberland Family" by Emily Independence Cumberland Clingan. There is also mention of a CD in other posts. I would love to have a copy of these if anyone has them.

Absolutely, this is the correct family. My husband (who died July 12, suddenly) was the grandson of "Bud" Cumberland (John Riley Cumberland II), who was the son of the John Riley who was married to Delilah! This is a wonderful discovery. I would love to get info from the woman in Potomac.

You are my husband's 4th cousin I believe, since you share the same great-grandparents. My husband's name was Riley Thomas Cumberland, b. November 7, 1952 in Washington, D.C. -- grew up in Fairfax County, moved to Asheville, NC in 1988.

Great to hear from you! We are no doubt related. My grandfather was Louis Simon Cumberland, Sr., who passed away on 1/22/2005. He was the 10th child of John Riley and Delilah. Sherry Agresti is in Potomac. The last email I have for her is: magresti@comcast.net

Did Louis live in Arlington, VA? I think Bud's brother, Louis, lived just a couple of doors down from his house near Wilson Blvd. in Arlington. If it's the same Louis, I met him!
