My gggrandfather, William Kirkbride, was born in Dearham in 1834. Father, John, mother, Mary Brown Kirkbride. He had several sisters whom I can learn nothing. Is there someone familiar with: Isabella (10 May 1833), Ann (21 Feb 1836, died 1891 in Dearham), Mary (21 Jan 1838), Elizabeth ( 08 Dec 1839). They were all born Dearham, William was married in Manchester in 1856, and by 1858, was in Liverpool for the birth of his 1st, Alice. Sister Elizabeth married in Liverpool. Looks like the history is; born Dearham, move to Manchester briefly, then to Liverpool. Anyone with any connections? thanks.

Thanks Mary

PS: My family is also related to Cumberlands of VA. They lived near Colvin Run in Fairfax County.

I wanted to share with the board that my grandfather passed away on 1/22/05, at the age of 92 (would have been 93 had he made it to 2/4). He was the 10th of the 11 children produced by John Riley Cumberland, Sr., and his wife, the former Delilah Ann Talbot.

Tonight we had a wonderful gathering of Cumberlands, among other relatives, and shared stories. Some people brought pictures of him when he was a baby, depicted along with other siblings, that we had not seen before. If you were among those that did so, THANK YOU.

James CUMBERLAND "Comedian" b c1854 England

The elder sister of my gt. gt. grandmother (Alice Maud GRETTON - she married Johann Martin GEBHARD) was an Agnes GRETTON b1852 in Birmingham England; she maried a James CUMBERLAND bc1854 in Birmingham. On the 1881 Census at 6 Bridson Street Pendleton in Salford Lancashire he describes himself as a Comedian. There three children all born Birmingham are Louisa CUMBERLAND b1874, James G. CUMBERLAND b.1878 and John H. CUMBERLAND b1880. My great aunts (sadly now deceased0 were always told that the GEBHARD family was somehow connected to Wilkie Bard the top Music Hall Star - he was born William August SMITH in Chorlton Cum Hardy LANCASHIRE in 1874; he did have an elder sister Maria SMITH - did she marry a "CUMBERLAND" ? Is this the connection ? Would like to rule it in or rule it out. If anyone knows more on this particular CUMBERLAND family please get in touch.

Paul GEBHARD, from a rainy and miserable Birmingham
paul.gebhard@btinternet.com

I have access to a huge amount of information relating to the father of Kathleen PEARCE/THOMPSON. Kathleen married, at about age 20, likely at or near Hull, a man about 15 years older than herself.

Anyone having information regarding this family line, or who can tell me how I might get in touch with Kathleen or her descendants, is asked to please contact me directly at gberdahl@telusplanet.net.
(they half cousins).

Mary Emma's "Emily" parents were Roger Edwin Cumberland, b: 1875 in DC and Mary Elizabeth Kelly, b: 1878 in PA.

Robert "Bob" Russell's parents were Charles Hugh Cumberland, b: 1861 in DC and Ethel M. Shirley? b:1861?

There are so many Cumberland's because of Dennis' grandparents being cousins it gets very confusing.
I do know that Mary Emma Cumberland Robert Russell Cumberland had the same gr grandfather, John Cumberland.

John Cumberland was married 3 times: #1. Harriett Free, m: 1823 (this is Robert Russells line). #2.
Barlow/ Biggs families

I am writing about James B. Barlow and his wife, Sarah Biggs Barlow. I believe James B. Barlow was born in Cumberland County, NC ca 1795. His wife Sarah may have been born in 1805 or even quite possibly 1812. I have seen both years listed as her birth. I was hoping that someone would be able to send me information about them. I do know that they moved to the northern part of Mississippi ca 1850, but I don't have any background info on them at all. I would like to know who their parents were, siblings, etc. If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,
Kem Barlow

George Cumberland, US, Texas Independence

Greetings from AZ!!!!!

Ran into a mystery this weekend and hopefully someone can help me put it to rest.

Oral family history of the southern branch of our Cumberland family has it that a favored son, George Cumberland, "fought in the Mexican War" with further reference to his name listed at the San Jacinto Monument in Texas. I have found this noted entry both online and off.

Well this much is true, a George Cumberland did indeed fight in the Texas War of Independence ( see http://www.sanjacinto-museum.org/kemp/v205.html ).

But it can't be the ancestor that it has commonly been attributed to since he would have been at best 2 years old at the start of the war or not even born yet. (George Cumberland, born abt 1836 to William Jacob Cumberland and Mary Polly Petty). It also can't realistically be this same George if the notes mean the Mexican-American War since he would only have been 10, or at best, 12 when that war started. So, I have to discount THIS George for both conflicts.

I do have a possibility for this George one generation higher in my Family Tree who was the brother of the above William Jacob. He was born in SC in 1815 to William Cumberland Sr and Elizabeth. That would have made him 20 or so for the Texas War. This George nexts comes to light as far as I know not until 1851 when he marries in TN at around the age of 36.

I was wondering if anyone else, especially those of you from the northern side of the family or the Tidewater/DC branch, might have a spare George laying around who could fill this slot. Or if anyone has a more info on this George who served in Texas.

Best,

Frank
Just to say hello

Hi,
Just for your info

I am from the UK. Born 3 Nov 1952. at loughborough Leicestershire, the youngest of 3 brothers. Cumberland is not a common name here and I have only ever met 2 other people with that name who were not part of my immediate family. One was when I was at school and he turned out to be a relative, although not a popular one, and the other I met recently in a town about 3 miles from where I now live (Ripley, Derbyshire). He too is probably a relative as he comes from a place in South Notinghamshire where all of my ancestors came from - East Leake.

If you look in an English book about regions where surnames arise from it will tell you that the Cumberlands were Gentleman Farmers from South Nottinghamshire ie: arouond East Leake. Although I know of non who were Farmers.

I remember my late father telling me that my eldest brother. Robert, was named after a cousin who emigrated to Canada early last century (1900's) who worked as a furniture remover and was killed by being run over whilst doing his job. Sorry if that is a bit morbid.
R. HALL and Samantha Ellen HALL born CUMBERLAND.
There are photos of Will HALL married to Etta Olive HALL
Riley HALL and Samantha Ellen HALL
Also Aunt Sarah HALL.
There are also lots of CUMBERLANDs in the album.
Sarah STARR CUMBERLAND
sister of Granvill CUMBERLAND.
There is a photo of Bert Cumberland, Uncle Joe CUMBERLAND
Mollie CUMBERLAND HAYES and her son Robert HAYES
Also Belle CUMBERLAND HAYES
Also photos of Mrs. Belle PEDDICORD, Orlie PEDDICORD of Sicily, OH.
An obit in the album says William A. CUMBERLAND was a former
resident of Sardinia, OH, was born near Sicily OH, and died near Mobile AL.
If these are your ancestors please contact me. I really would like these photos to be with
the right family.

Linda Rawles rawles@usa.net

charles aaron linton cumberland

carolyn, I'm not sure if I wrote you about finding my grandfather Charles' whereabouts or not. He moved to Texas and married a young woman named Ruth Jones, they had 4 children, 3 boys and a girl. He died in 1946 and is buried (I believe) in Austin Texas. We don't know if he actually divorced my grandmother Amelia--haven't found records of this. So, the whole second family might be illegitimate.

Mississippi Cumberlands

I ran across this web site quite by accident and was very intriqued. I have always been aware that my surname was rather rare and often wondered about the origins of "my people." I have not done any previous research but I can trace my lineage to the Philidelphia Mississippi area back 3 about generations. If anyone has any information that I may be interested in I would appreciate a reply by email. Thanks
