Great to hear from you! We are no doubt related. My grandfather was Louis Simon Cumberland, Sr., who passed away on 1/22/2005. He was the 10th child of John Riley and Delilah. Sherry Agresti is in Potomac. The last email I have for her is: magresti@comcast.net

Absolutely, this is the correct family. My husband (who died July 12, suddenly) was the grandson of "Bud" Cumberland (John Riley Cumberland II), who was the son of the John Riley who was married to Delilah! This is a wonderful discovery. I would love to get info from the woman in Potomac.

You are my husband's 4th cousin I believe, since you share the same great-grandparents. My husband's name was Riley Thomas Cumberland, b. November 7, 1952 in Washington, D.C. -- grew up in Fairfax County, moved to Asheville, NC in 1988.

--Diane
My grandmother was a Cumberland. It sounds like your husband and I have a common ancestor in William Edwin Cumberland b. abt 1770 in England. My line descends from his son Charles, while your husband's line is through his son John. I'd be happy to share whatever I know with you.

I have read in other posts of a book entitled "History of the Cumberland Family" by Emily Independence Cumberland Clingan. There is also mention of a CD in other posts. I would love to have a copy of these if anyone has them.
Hi katie, I am tracing the family and have got back to a David Cumberland born in 1820 at marketstreet,(markyate)in hertfordshire, his wife ,sarah came from witney in oxen, I have been able to come forward to the present, as yet I don't think I have come across your G/father in our cumberland line, there is a kate, but she would be 140 yrs old now, you are doing well!. I am trying find a male, francis c/land born in 1888 in sutton surrey, in particular his first wife between 1914-1943 when he married my grandmother, renee ella in 1943. Our paths may cross, there a lot of us c/lands dotted about, I find it difficult when they have no middle name. There is an Eldrid Harold in our line so you never know as I have yet to trace sons and daughters, if I stumble on any connection I will contact you. Regards John Cumberland.(Surrey branch of the family, living in Bridlington E.Yorks)

Hi Margaret, Was browsing thru these messages, it enlightened me and my wife to hear of names that we also have in our family. There is a high possibility of our being related. My grandfather was David Independence Cumberland. He had 2 brothers and a half brother. Walter, I believe worked in the shipyards. who later on moved to Florida and owned a marina in Pensacola. This was told to me by my mother. Paul Ignatius Higdon, David's half brother, also worked in a shipyard. the other brother Frank, I don't know too much about.
Paul's sister Mary Higdon's grandson George Locke, has a bunch of pictures but the majority don't have names on them. One of them was like a Cumberland reunion in which my Uncle Paul, Aunt Mary and g-grandmother Florence I. Elizabeth (Stewart) Cumberland-Higdon are in this picture.
We received from Uncle Paul an application for marriage for James S. Stewart & Mary Redmiles, who were Florence's parents. He also told of a story of being related to the Duke of Cumberland and that there was a castle and estate for the Cumberland family in England.
David I. Cumberland's parents were James A. Cumberland b. 1864 in D.C.and Florence I. Stewart b. 1869 in MD.
James's parents were David Henry Cumberland b. 1838 D.C. and Mary C. ? b. 1839 MD. she was married to a Charles Barr after her 1st husband died. we have more info if this is not enuf but we do go back to William Edwin who was born in England.
My mother always used to say we were Scotch-Irish.
If you have any other info that you would like to share, we highly appreciate it. Our email address is - albert.jones2@worldnet.att.net

Thanks, Al & Chris Jones

Hello Hannah
I hope you receive this. William Cumberland and Theodosia were my G G Grandparents. My grandfather was William son of Arthur son of Will and Theo. He was born in 1889 and came to Canada in 1910. All I have found so far is that williams parents were
Thomas born abt1791 and Ann born abt 1791. This is from the 1841 census. These dates could well be 5 years out. Theos name does not show up but by looking at the census it self you could barely see Ann Timass age 46 Ann age 11 and Theodosia age 9.
This was from Streatly. I know her parents were george and Ann but which ones I have not been able to discern. How about that a Cumberland relative from England.
Hope to hear from you
With best wishes
Jim Cumberland

Hello, do you have any info on any Cumberlands on any ships lists? I know they must have sailed but cannot find any lists with their names. My Cumberlands ended up in New Brunswick, then to Wisc in 1892. Will appreciate any info, wish I knew where in England they came from. Possibly Wales. Nancy

I wanted to share with the board that my grandfather passed away on 1/22/05, at the age of 92 (would have been 93 had he made it to 2/4). He was the 10th of the 11 children produced by John Riley Cumberland, Sr., and his wife, the former Delilah Ann Talbot.

Tonight we had a wonderful gathering of Cumberlands, among other relatives, and shared stories. Some people brought pictures of him when he was a baby, depicted along with other siblings, that we had not seen before. If you were among those that did so, THANK YOU.

Cumberland - DC/VA

I don't know if this helps anyone, but my grandparents are from DC and have resided in Northern Virginia the last 70 years or so. My grandfather is Louis Cumberland; he had a brother Frank who died in the 1950s or early 1960s, before I was born. His widow just died a few years ago at age 102. My father is Frank James, and he has brothers Louis Jr., and William (Bill). I don't know if this info helps anyone, but judging from the notes there seems to be a missing link in the DC line. Hope it helps a bit!

If you are looking for the Cumberlands that were in SW DC until the early 20th century, I am the descendant of one of them. My great-grandparents are John Riley Cumberland and his wife Delilah, who had 11 children (my grandfather being the 10th of them and the sole surviving sibling). Please email me if you think this is the right family; there is a woman in Potomac, Maryland who has put together a rather extensive tree.

My gggrandfather, William Kirkbride, was born in Dearham in 1834. Father, John, mother, Mary Brown Kirkbride. He had several sisters whom I can learn nothing. Is there someone familiar with: Isabella (10 May 1833), Ann (21 Feb 1836, died 1891 in Dearham), Mary (21 Jan 1838), Elizabeth ( 08 Dec 1839). They were all born Dearham, William was married in Manchester in 1856, and by 1858, was in Liverpool for the birth of his 1st, Alice. Sister Elizabeth married in Liverpool. Looks like the history is; born Dearham, move to Manchester briefly, then to Liverpool. Anyone with any connections? thanks.

The elder sister of my gt. gt. grandmother (Alice Maud GRETTON - she married Johann Martin GEBHARD) was an Agnes GRETTON b1852 in Birmingham England; she maried a James CUMBERLAND bc1854 in Birmingham. On the 1881 Census at 6 Bridson Street Pendleton in Salford Lancashire he describes himself as a Comedian. There three children all born Birmingham are Louisa CUMBERLAND b1874, James G. CUMBERLAND b.1878 and John H. CUMBERLAND b1880. My great aunts (sadly now deceased0 were always told that the GEBHARD family was somehow connected to Wilkie Bard the top Music Hall Star - he was born William August SMITH in Chorlton Cum Hardy LANCASHIRE in 1874; he did have an elder sister Maria SMITH - did she marry a "CUMBERLAND" ? Is this the connection ? Would like to rule it in or rule it out. If anyone knows more on this particular CUMBERLAND family please get in touch.

Paul GEBHARD, from a rainy and miserable Birmingham
paul.gebhard@btinternet.com

I have a picture of my Great-Grandfather, John Riley Cumberland (born 1865) building a boat at the Georgetown Boatyard in 1931. But there isn't much to see -- just two guys working on a boat while one rather well-dressed man looks on.

John Riley Cumberland's father was Charles Theodore Cumberland born 1838, son of John Cumberland (born 1804)and Susan Johnson.

Was the boatyard located on Water Street between 25th and 26th, N.W.?

Have cemetery records from Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington showing two large sites purchased by Charles and M.C. Cumberland on April 15, 1871. Another site was purchased by Thomas Cumberland on December 12, 1855. Parts of this lot were transferred to Joseph F. Birch.

Apparently I am in the Mary Emma line. Would love to share and receive more information.

Am just getting into searching for internet info on geneology.

Thanks,

Margaret

What a coincidence that you would post your message the same day Margaret Stanton-Fisher (also a correspondent on the message board) faxed me a copy of "History of the Cumberland Family" by Emily Independence Cumberland Clingan.

The names you mention seem to fit in with the children of William Edwin Cumberland and Annie Coombs. Their names were: Susan, Roger, John, Sidney, Emily, Walter Paul, Austin, Jeannette, and Alonza. Their birthdates would be in the 1850's.

William Edwin was the son of John Cumberland, Sr. (born 1804) and his third wife: Susannah King Johnson. Susannah was a widow with 4 childern when she married John in 1848. John had 11 children from his first two marriages (including two sets of twins). Altogether that made for 18 children!
John, Sr. took up the boat building business and ran the boatyard for 50 years. John Jr. (son of 1st wife) carried on the business after his father's death in 1876.

I am a descendant of Charles Theodore Cumberland -- John Sr.'s son by his second wife. I have a picture of my Great-Grandfather, John Riley Cumberland working on a boat at the boatyard as late of 1931.

f these names fit into your family history, email me directly at MSRAgresti@aol.com.
