John Cundiff (b. abt 1705) who died in Lancaster Co. had a son named Benjamin who was allegedly born abt 1733. If your John was born in 1759, he could be the son of Benjamin (b 1733).

He could also be the son of John (1705)'s other sons John Jr. and Richard (all three sons are mentioned in John (1705)'s 1775 Lancaster Co. will). I have no reliable birth dates for John Jr. or Richard. I think we can definitively rule John Jr. out as your John because he was given land in 1761 in the will of Stephen Mullis, Lancaster County - doubtful he was only 2 years old at the time! (link: http://books.google.com/books?id=lpMxgKciYDIC&pg=PA161&a...).

If I were you, I'd look into your John being a son of one of John (1705)'s sons Benjamin, John Jr. or Richard.

John (1705) had three brothers, but none of them seem like they're involved in your query. All of these men were the sons of Richard Cundiff II. Richard II was the only son of Richard I "The Immigrant", so there are no other Cundiff lines to attempt to trace.

John (1705)'s brother Richard (b abt 1704) didn't have any sons according to his 1781 Lancaster Co. will so you can probably rule his line out.

John's brother Isaac (b abt 1700) is the one I mentioned who died in Prince William Co. in 1744. Doubtful he's involved since he left Northumberland/Lancaster long before your John was born in 1759.

John's brother Jonathan (b abt 1712) is an enigma - no idea what happened to him and it seems impossible that he's the same Jonathan Cundiff who died at Point Pleasant in 1774. Jonathan - who died at Point Pleasant - named his first born son Isaac at his birth in 1759. He did have a son named John, but he was born in Bedford abt 1767.

Links:
John Cundiff 1775 will abstract
http://books.google.com/books?id=lpMxgKciYDIC&pg=PA161&a...

1790 Tax List Census listing several John Cundiffs:
http://www.binnsgenealogy.com/VirginiaTaxListCensuses/1790in...

FYI: the Cundiff land in Lancaster shared a property line with the Ball family - as in George Washington's mom Mary Ball's family - and the Cundiffs are mentioned in several Ball family documents from 1694-1732.

There is a school of thought that says my John Cundiff, father of Lucy who married Isaac Welch, is the son of Benjamin Welch -- the son of John of Northumberland/Lancaster. Certainly the Welch and Cundiff lines stayed together -- John Cundiff also appears on Isaac's Rev War pension, I believe. I'm headed to Lib of VA next month, and want to begin documenting and sourcing as much a possible. Your information will be extremely helpful. If there is anything else you believe would aid me in sorting these folks out, please let me know. I don't consider anything a fact until it's documented, and, of course, that's the hard part!

Re: Cundiff in Virginia

The Cundiff line in Fauquier appears to have started with Isaac Cundiff (1700-1744), son of Richard Cundiff II of Northumberland/Lancaster Counties. Isaac died in Prince William County in 1744, but the area he was in would later become Fauquier Co. Isaac's sons Isaac Jr. (abt 1724-1800) and Richard (abt 1725-1774) are found on a list of Hamilton Parish, Elk Run and Vicinity, Prince William County Taxpayers dated 1751. Again, this area would become part of Fauquier Co. when it was formed in 1759.

Richard Cundiff would move to Bedford County circa 1764. When he bought land in Bedford, he was listed as "of Fauquier". Richard's son John is the one with Revolutionary War pension from Kentucky, not the one you're looking for. (NOTE: Many people call this Richard of Bedford "Richard III", meaning he is son of Richard II mentioned above, but that is wrong. Richard III lived his whole life on the land he was granted in Lancaster County in his grandfather Richard Cundiff I's will, dying there in 1781.)

Isaac Jr. stayed in Fauquier Co. his whole life and died there in 1800. It seems that a log cabin that dates to Isaac Jr. still exists in Fauquier, in the Cromwell's Run Historic District, protected by the US National Parks Service. Specifically, it is on land he owned called Greendale farm on Five Points Road.

The Fauquier County Minute Book, 1763-1764, Page 44, lists a John Cundiff among other men as "of Hamilton parish for absenting themselves from their Parish Church within this six months last past", apparently meaning they left the area. I'm not sure who this John is, there was a John who moved to Bedford around that time.

Richard and Isaac Jr's brother Jonathan died at the Battle of Point Pleasant in current West Virginia in 1774. It seems that Cundiff men were heavily involved in carving roads over the mountains in western Virginia in the mid-1700's.

The Revolutionary War pension for Siars Hamrick (born 1753 in Fauquier County), dated Nov. 2, 1833, Hampshire County VA, lists Isaac Welch, William Welch and John Cundiff Sr. as having contributed supporting statements of his service. I found the pension on Fold 3 dot com, and got some info from it. Siars Hamrick testified that William Welch and John Cundiff lived in his neighborhood and could vouch for his service. Attached a screenshot of part of this statement.

In the book "West Virginians in the American Revolution", it says John Cundiff was born in Lancaster Co in 1759 and enlisted in Northumberland Co in 1775. This might render all of the Fauquier info I listed above irrelevant to your particular query. It might make him the son of John Cundiff (abt 1712 Northumberland Co.-1775 Lancaster Co.) and the 1st cousin of Richard and Isaac Jr. named above. However, the Cundiffs are hard to track in this time frame due to repeated names and lack of records. It is almost certain though that like all Cundiffs in America, John traces back to Richard Cundiff the immigrant who first shows up in Northumberland County records in 1667.

Many Cundiffs fought in the revolution, but didn't apply for pensions. I found the record of my 5th-g-grandfather Elijah C. Cundiff's service in another man's pension file.

I am researching the Cundiff family of Hampshire County, VA (later WV) which began in Fauquier County, VA. I believe they are related to the Cundiffs who later went to KY.

I am especially interested in Rev. War soldier John Cundiff (who died in Hampshire, not John of KY)and how he might be related to Lucy Cundiff who married Rev. William Welch. All assistance would be very welcome!

John Cundiff family - Lizton, Indiana

I'm working on adding information to FAG entries for the Cundiff family members buried in the Vieley Cemetery near Lizton, Indiana. My question is: Is the James Cundiff (1825-1868) shown at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=74... the son of the John Cundiff at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=84... (1788-1868)? I think this is likely but can't find any definite record. Thanks! Dave Smith

I'm looking for the family of my grandmother. She was born in 1900, I believe in West Virginia; married Truman Fredrick Unkle, Sr., in Ohio. They had two children, Truman F. Unkle, Jr.(1925), and Joan Elizabeth Unkle (10/05/1927). She had two sisters, Elizabeth and Lillian, and one brother, Ralph. My grandmother had muscular dystrophy that manifested in her 20's. She and my grandfather divorced around 1929, and she moved from Zanesville, Ohio, to Columbus, Ohio. My grandmother told me her father was a coal miner in West Virginia, and died in a mining accident. I don't know his name or her mother's name. If anyone knows anything, I'd love to hear from you.
I don't have much info on this man, so I just did some quick digging...

- 1835 Marriage Record lists Willis Cundiff and Nancy Ann Crouch.
- The 1840 census, Southern District, Bedford, lists Willis Cundiff.
- The 1850 census, Southern Division, Bedford, lists William Cundiff, born 1807, with wife Nancy Ann and children.
- The 1860 census, Southern District, Bedford, lists W. H. Cundiff, born 1808, with the initials of the children on this census matching the names of the children of William Cundiff on the 1850 census.

There is no doubt the families on the 1850 census and the 1860 census are the same, the children match exactly. However, using the two censuses, it would imply that they had two sons named William: William B. on 1850 census, born 1834 (1837 on 1860 census), and William H. on 1860 census, born 1853.

As you probably know, errors on the census are common so I'll make it a point to try to dig up some more info before drawing a conclusion on this man.

I don't see 1813 birth for any of the records I'm using for this Willis.

Elijah and Jemima both lived to be quite old, and it seems that Jemima was having children through her 40's.

Re: More possible English origins for surname Cundiff

Family Tree DNA is currently holding a sale for New Surname Project members. This includes the Cundiff Surname Project which covers the spelling variants.

DNA Tests for Genealogy and Anthropology are now:

$119 for the Y-DNA 37 Marker test(regularly $149)
$199 for the Y-DNA 67 Marker test(regularly $239)

Find more about the Cundiff Surname Project here:

http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Cundiff

As so many researchers are trying to tie the Cundiff name back to England with not much success, I expect the surname project to be key to this effort.

Thanks,
Greg

More possible English origins for surname Cundiff

Surnames to consider when researching English origins of the American Cundiff family, based on a DNA relationship between two individuals, one with Cundiff and one with Condit/Cunditt surname:

Cundiff, Cundith, Cundyth, Cundeth, Cunditt, Cundit, Cundict, Conduit, Cunliff, Cundie, Cundy, Cundi, Cundey, Cundill, Cundall, Cundyte, Conduyt

Sources (all available in Google Books):

"Cunliff, Cundie, Cundith: A conduit" - "The Dialect in Craven...county of York" by William Carr

"Cundiff, Cunliff: A culvert or conduit, an underground tunnel for conveying water." - "A glossary of Words used in the wapentakes of Manley and...vol 23." by Edward Peacock

"Conduit: condut, condit, condite, also cundit, cundite, cundeth, cundith etc., < OF. conduit, conduict, condut, conduct, condit, m" - "The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia" by William Dwight Whitney

Of course, if anyone has actual proof or source of the claim of James Cundiff/Cunliffe of Wycoller being the father of Richard Cundiff I'd love to see it. Until then, there are far too many holes in the theory.
Re: O. Roscoe Cundiff - Ethel Creola Waggoner

Otie Roscoe Cundiff was a brother to my mother, Agnes Pearl Cundiff)Gaither. I did not know his wife's first name was Ethel. As far as I know, she always went by Creola. One of their daughters was Mabel. The other was Hazel.
Mabel was born Dec. 18, 1933 in Indian Springs, Martin Co., Ind. She first married Charles Wayne Moffatt and next married Fred O. Rentsch, who preceded her in death. The newspaper obituary doesn't give the date of death, but her mother, Creola, is listed as a survivor. She died at Loogootee, Indiana. She was also survived by three sons, Eugene, Douglas and Dean, and two daughters, Pam, (Mrs. Danny Cox), and Kathy Howe. Half-siblings Wilma (Martin) Gee and Donald Martin preceded her in death. She was survived by her sister, Hazel (Cundiff) Simmerman.
I have copies of the newspaper obituaries. If you will send me your e-mail address, I will try to send you copies.

Cundiff/Cunditt/Condit

My surname is Cundiff tracing back to Richard Cundiff the immigrant to Virginia, and I have done yDNA testing and have been given a 25 marker, genetic distance 2 match with Norman I. Condit, who passed away in 2007, known as the Condit family historian who published a reprint of the 1916 version of the "Genealogical Record of the Condit Family, Descendants of John Cunditt, 1678 to 1885".

Apparently there is a legitimate scientific Cundiff/Cunditt connection, and frankly in my opinion this casts doubt on the whole theory of the American Cundiff family originating from the Cunliffes in Lancashire as I have found a large list of wills from the 1600's-1700's from Wiltshire in the south of England, many of them Richard Cunditt, at the Wiltshire Council website.

The question is, which name morphed into which? Cundiff--> Cunditt or Cunditt--> Cundiff?
