Wilson Cupples - North Carolina via Tennessee

I have traced my family to Wilson Cupples (b. 1817, Montgomery, NC - d. 1870 McNairy Co, Tennessee). He married a woman name Annis Rickson or Aarnis Richardson.

I suspect his father is a Charles Cupples, but I have found no real evidence.

There is also a family story about a Native American in the family around this time.

ANY info is appreciated. I have found Wilson and Annis in other family trees, but have found incorrect info and errors and very few sources of information.

I've hit a roadblock here and really want to crack this mystery.

Emaline is in my family tree. She died in 1855 just 3 years after her marriage. I am dying to learn more about the cause and circumstances of her death. As far as I can tell, she did not have any children.

Bio of the Cupples family from Antrim, Ireland

The following is from "The History of Mifflin County" by Joseph Cochran, published 1879. This was written with the information being given by James Cupples' youngest son John.

"JAMES CUPPLES, SENR; - Came from Antrim county, Ireland, in the year preceding the revolutionary war. An English man-of-war gave their emigrant ship a severe chase, but a dense fog saved them from capture. He, like many others of the early emigrants, first located in Chester county. After his marriage he removed to Mifflin county, and settled in Derry township, in Dry Valley, on a farm which he bought of a Mr. Burns. He raised a family of 21 children, only 3 of them sons. Was 3 times married. The youngest of these sons, John Cupples, was born in Dry Valley, in the year 1800, December 22. Was married July 28, 1828. His brother James died at the age of 88, and his brother Robert at the age of 80, showing the immense, almost unprecedented, vigor and vital energies of their race. His descendants are 6 sons and 2 daughters, of whom ther are now (1879) living 4 sons and 1 daughter........For many years he has been a resident of Ferguson's Valley, where his influence for good and the well-being of his neighborhood are so generously exerted. Though of an advanced age he enjoys excellent health, and bids fair yet to remain long with us; and so may it be."

We know nothing really about that part of our family as my Aunt Juanita refused to tell us, We know that we are Irish (my dad's)and it is so nice to know that someone else shares our name.
Trying to determine if one of those wives was a Mary Gro/Groh. I found a will in Mifflin County from a Christian Gro (wife Margaret) who mentioned daughter Mary Cupples. Mary Ann (maiden name unknown) died in 1828, but Christian mentions his daughter Mary Cupples without saying she is deceased. James Cupples Sr's will is contested and one name mentioned is Margaret Gro. Does anyone have the full copy of the will or the estate records? you can email me directly at heirmail at msn. com.

Hi frank I have been doing research on the cupples line but I came across Alexander Cupples born 1809 in Ireland with partner Elizabeth Shaw born around 1811 in Ireland his brother Robert Cupples born 1812 in Ireland there was also a Samuel & margaret in that family a lot of people take from other peoples trees and one copy's the other and when you try to tell them that they are wrong they do not like it very much the name Shaw I think is still in slamannan but that is not margaret cupples family Margaret's G G G father came from out side Edinburgh and that is the Cupples Shepard line a different line altogether.

My genealogy can be found on rootsweb.com, located at:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=ladypi

I can not say if "my" Cupples are the same as "your" Cupples. For one thing, I don't believe that is the 'original spelling' but I can't confirm it either way.
You will see from my genealogy that the last name in my list (or the earliest name) belongs to Calvin J. Cupples, married to Mary Wallace/Wallis. I can not break this brickwall and have not as yet located his parents.

Write back if you have further questions.
Judy

Hi Valster...

Robert was my Dad's brother, he and his wife Isabelle were my aunt and uncle, their son Robert would be my cousin. I would greatly appreciate a copy of that marriage record to my email news37man at aol dot com. There's a direct link on the original post of this thread.

I have very little info on Robert (Bertie) and his wife. I have attached the 1930 US Census page for them showing their birth places, that of their parents, occupations, and some other data. If that file can't be found email me and I will send it directly.

Family stories are that she was a one-time circus performer, and that he took his own life. Whereabouts of their son is unknown.

Brad Cupples

Dear Brad

I am doing research on the Carters from Port Glasgow and you mentioned an Isabelle Carter, who may have been Isabelle Thom(p)son who’s mother was married to Patrick Carter. Isabelle's father was Joseph Thomson and mother was Sarah McBride. She went to USA with Sarah Carter in 1926. I found a marriage record in Kings County for an Isabelle Thompson and Robert Cupples. Any info would be appreciated. Regards Valster
Found a little info of interest. There was a marriage license issued in Feleciana on Sept 20th 1820 to George Cuppless(w/2 s's) and Elizabeth Clark. the list said a bond was issued. I went to the courthouse in ST Francisville, but Bond Book A was missing and that would of been the right book, was unable to find the marriage license either. In 1820 George would of been between 30 & 40 and Elizabeth was between 20 & 30, the 1820 census shows 1 female between the ages of 0 - 10 so it makes you wonder if one had a child from a previous marriage. Anyone living close to St Francisville or Clinton might try to follow up and share what you find.
