Charles Joseph Currie

Charles Joseph Currie married Fanny Huggard in Victoria, Australia in 1874. They had ten children. In 1901 he was living in Mossgiel in south-western New South Wales and he had worked for the New South Wales government as a tank sinker. I have been unable to find out anything else about him except that he was deceased at the time of his youngest daughter's marriage in 1923.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I found the family under Currin. No telling what other spellings have been used.

Interesting that this side of my family were literate, no signing with an X.

Family lore said my grandfather, Edwin Currie, was "kicked in the head by a mule" during the First World War. I always thought this was a disparaging remark but I now know that his association with equines was probably because his father, Henry Alonzo Currie (2), was a cab driver and a cab would have been horse drawn in those days.

I have subsequently found that my grandfather, Edwin, was in the British Veterinary Corps at Villeneuve so all that lore now ties in.

Interesting and frustrating trying to trace a family.

I have a more experienced Ancestry friend who I hope can help me (and you) seek further information on John Currie.

I think this may mean buying birth certificates. I kick myself because I was in England last year and could have chased this up in person but didn't.

Lynda Griffiths, Balmattum, Australia

I have found the family on the 1871 census, the name was mistranscribed as Currin (RG10; Piece: 441; Folio: 70; Page: 16;)and also have his marriage to Ann Alder in 1864, by which time they already had 6 children. Henry's eldest son Alfred Henry is my 2 x great grandfather. My great grandmother, Alfred's daughter Rosetta also had very dark hair and a dark complexion.

There are a couple of John Curries born in London who could be Henry Alonzo's father but without any record of his parents names to positively link to our line I do think, as a mariner, he could be the 'overseas' ancestor.

Would be interesting to get to the bottom of this family mystery!

Ann Blunt - London

Henry Alonzo Currie b1827 is my maternal great grandfather. My grandfather is his son, Edwin Currie.

I too am frustrated in not being able to find him in any census prior to 1881.

Not sure if Currie is a corruption of another name. Currie is a Scottish name but obviously my relatives were all from the East End.

My grandfather, Edwin, was known as "Blackie" as he had such dark hair and skin complexion. Alonzo may not be Italian either as it could easily be Portuguese or Spanish.

The fact that his father is listed as a Mariner could be a clue here.

Lynda Griffiths - Balmattum, Australia

Marian B. Currie, 92, born in Warren, Pa.daughter of,George E. and Mattie Corl Berry

Marian B. Currie, 92,
died peacefully at her home in North East,PA,
on Friday evening, April 20, after a long illness. Throughout her long life Marian had been a blessing to her family, her church and the many organizations that benefitted from her goodness, competence and marvelous sense of humor. She was born in Warren, Pa., to George E. and Mattie Corl Berry on May 18, 1919, and graduated from Warren High School in 1936. She married Donald R. Currie there on February 22, 1947; their daughter Kathleen was born later that year. In 1951 the family moved to North East, where Marian resided until her death and became a vital and substantial part of many community institutions and organizations. For many years she was a librarian at McCord Library and later at St. Mary's Seminary. She was a founding member of the North East Community Food Pantry and represented Holy Cross Episcopal Church on the its Lay Council (governing board) until last fall. She developed the Food Pantry's interview and intake process and trained other volunteers in the procedures; she was also the moving force behind the $10,000 annual grants to the Pantry in its early years from the Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pa. Marian was an active, devoted and ubiquitous member of Holy Cross Church for 60 years, serving as member of its vestry, co-ordinator of the parish Prayer Line, hospitality co-ordinator, chair of many Wine Festival activities and rummage sales, and member of the Altar Guild, of which she has been director from 1991 through last winter. Her generosity of spirit, vision, energy and boundless charity will be greatly missed by all in the church. There was not much she didn't know or couldn't do, and "ask Marian" has been a standard response to questions of every kind in the church for years. For many years Marian served on the Board of the Community Fair, where she was also integral to that event. She and her husband were active in years past in the North East Yacht Club and she retained membership in the Warren-Youngsville chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She enjoyed fishing (though she never liked fish!), watching baseball and football, sewing and knitting, and her weekly routine of Friday lunches and a game of dominoes with some of her many friends. Marian was predeceased by her husband in 1997 and her daughter in 2006. She is survived by her son-in-law David Minerd and his wife Brenda; her grandchildren Ryan Minerd of Atlanta, Ga. (with his wife Tiffany and son Brodie) and Alyson Minerd of Albuquerque, N.M.; her brother Gerald Berry and wife Peggy of Clearwater, Fla. and their children. Funeral arrangements are being made by the William D. Elkin Funeral Home in North East, and a memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at Holy Cross Church, 51 East Main Street. Memorial gifts may be made to Holy Cross, McCord Memorial Library or Community Nursing Services of North East.
( Erie Times-News on April 22, 2012)

Holy Cross Church,"

Currie's Hill

The widow of Lachlan Currie, and her ten children, came from Islay, Scotland, in 1830, and settled in Caledon,
when her youngest son, Alexander, was eight years of age. When he grew up, he chose lot 13, con. 4, Erin Twp.
for his farm, and brought an older gentleman to see the property. It was virgin forest with stoney soil, and the
older man said, "I pity the girl you bring here as your wife." He was thinking of the number of stones to be
picked. However, two years later, in 1845, Alexander Currie married the gentleman's daughter, Ann McDougall.
Miss Ada Currie, first President of Wellington County Historical Society, and her brother, Errett Currie, of this farm were grandchildren. Currie's Hill was named after the Currie family. Alexander's brother, Neil, took up E-1/2 lot
13. Another brother was Duncan Currie who opened a General Store in Belwood in 1856, and went to
Saskatchewan with his son, Sandy, in early 1900's.
Argyll Currie's in Thorah Twp area, Ontario

Just wondering if anyone knows about these Curries, supposedly from Argyll Scotland before 1843. Sarah Currie and Edward Morrison married in feb 1843, both from Argyll, living in Thorah. By children's names, father could possibly have been Duncan, Peter or John. Family seems to have stayed in Thorah Twp area. Thanks!

John Paterson Currie and Alexander Burr Currie - Daviot, Aberdeenshire

John Paterson Currie (born 9 Sep 1883 at Pitblain, Daviot, ABD) and his brother, Alexander Burr Currie, (born 6 Jan 1889, also at Pitblain, Daviot) were two of the 13 children born to James Currie and Ann Burr (married 3 Jul 1877 in Daviot).

Four of the children died in infancy, two (Robert Burr Currie and Mary Ann Burr Currie) went to Massachusetts, whilst five are known to have stayed in Scotland.

I am keen to find out what happened to the other two children, John Paterson and Alexander Burr.

John was listed in the 1891 census with his parents at Pitblain, Daviot. On 30 Jun 1899, he enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders, claiming to be aged 18. When his correct age was found out by the Gordons, they discharged him on 23 Jun 1900. I haven’t been able to find any later record of him.

Alexander was listed with his parents at Pitblain, Daviot in both the 1891 and 1901 censuses – I haven’t been able to find any later record of him.

One possibility is that they followed their brother and sister to the USA – however, I have not been able to identify any likely records of them in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 US censuses

I will be delighted to hear from anyone who knows anything more about these two brothers.

I can be contacted directly at rajburr@westnet.com.au

Rob Burr

Canberra, Aust.

Hi Jackie - great to hear from you so soon !!! Looks like your 4G grandparents and my 2G grandparents are the same - John Currie and Janet (Jennie) Forbes which makes us third cousins 2x removed --- far stretch but cousins none the less which is exciting. I don't have as much info on John/Janet as I would like but will send you my whole Currie file for you to use what you need. Would you be willing to share what you have found on the Currie's. Send me your e-mail address and I'll send it to you. Are you in PEI??
JoAnn
joeys225@yahoo.com

Hi JoAnn! I'm happy to hear from you!

I am descended from Mary C. Currie (1834-1908) /Ebeneezer Crosman (1832-1912) . They had a son named Martin Luther Crosman. Martin Luther married Charlotte A. Brooks (1862-1938). Martin (I guess he went by Luther) and Charlotte had George Percy Crosman and I believe 4 other children. George Percy married Georgie M MacGregor and they had Lawrence Crosman, my grandfather.

I would love to hear any information you have on John Currie Sr. (1802-1884) and Janet Forbes. Also her parents, Donald Forbes and Janet Murphy and anything beyond that! Looking forward to hearing from you.

Jackie Sills

I know this is a long shot since it's been so long but my family is descended from Ebeneezer Crosman/ Mary C. Currie. I've hit a dead end when it comes to John Currie's (Mary's father's) parents. I have Janet (Jenny) Forbes parents down as Donald Forbes and Janet Murphy but I have next to no information on them other than they were born in Scotland. Any help?

Hi sorry it took so long to reply. My Currie family was in Clydebank Scotland in 1901 then I have lost track of them. The father: Thomas, Mother: Elizabeth,Kids: Robert, Mary, Thomas, Joseph, Archibald, James. I Know they are originally from Ireland but now sure where. I think our Currie coat of arms says My Hope Is Constant In Thee with the castle with arm and sword coming out.It has the Mac Donald tartan on the back round. I do not know when James came to Canada just that my aunt Lil (Elizabeth) went to stay with him in the 1950's. Let me know if this adds up.
Thanks Pam

Do you have any additional information on this family. My husband's Currie line originated from Isle of Islay, Scotland and migrated to Eldon, Victoria, Ontario sometime after 1827.

James Currie / Archibald Currie?

I am looking for the family of James currie who came to canada from scotland and I beleived lived in Ontario. My Aunt Elizabeth (Lil) went to live with him sometime in the 1950's. Lil was his great neice. He would have had a sister Mary who lived in Scotland and may have had a brother named Archibald. Any info would be great. Thank you Pam
