gdhcpa - not sure who you're talking to - I grew up in Middlesex County, MA, but my line of Curriers were actually in Newburyport in the Revolutionary era and moved to New Brunswick around 1777 after the hurricane/tornado in 1777 ruined his shipbuilding business. Family migrated slowly to Maine over the next couple of generations and moved to the mills on the Merrimack in the 1890s. Back where we started!

My line of his descendants went eventually to West Gloucester where Josiah (my 4th great grandfather) bought property on Walkers Creek in the 1770s (across the creek is Essex). My Curriers were there until the late 1990s.

Most of my family still lives in Essex County (Rowley, Beverly, Peabody). I jumped the Mason-Dixon Line a few years back, but I try to visit MA as often as possible.

Well written kerrylsullivan ... thank you!

I agree that if Jeffrey and Samuel were close relatives of Richard, there would have been some sort of connection, even if only briefly (either in Salisbury England or Salisbury New England). Jeffrey is found only in Portsmouth/Newcastle and Isles of Shoals and nowhere else and pops up there as an adult. When some of his descendants began to move south, they skipped over Salisbury and headed to Ipswich. I think Jeffrey was a pirate who retired in NH ... just kidding - he wasn't -- please no one take me seriously!!

As for Strawberry Banke, after reading a few histories of Portsmouth NH, there is no connection between Portsmouth aka Strawbery Banke and any Strawbery Banke in Scotland. One was not named for the other. There really were strawberries growing on the banks of the Piscataqua River.

There has been supposition that Richard was indentured to Dove and that he either paid off or worked off his service quickly because it didn't take him long to be prominent and wealthy (which couldn't happen unless someone was a freeman which couldn't happen if someone was an indentured servant.) I like the idea of "agent" much better.

Re: Curriers on Isles of Shoals, Jeffrey Currier line

Richard Currier came to Amesbury as the "servant" (which may correspond to "agent" today) of Francis Dove. (Another agent was Thomas Macy, another early resident of Amesbury and one of the initial settlers of Nantucket) Francis Dove was the mayor of Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. There is also mention, in the records in England, of a Thomas Currier (Currye) who was the attorney of Mr. Dove. There is a record at St. Thomas' Church in Salisbury, Wiltshire, of the marriage of Thomas to Martha Osborn in 1610, and a record of the baptism of their son Richard on 5/3/1616. This date corresponds to Richard's stated age on a deposition he made in Massachusetts, so it's generally agreed that this is our guy, as you guys probably all know.

there are records of three Currier girls being baptized at St. Thomas in Salisbury, Wiltshire, around the same time, perhaps sisters of Richard, but unfortunately no Samuel and no Jeffrey. Richard Currier did go on to name his only known son Thomas, which is another piece of circumstantial evidence.

Richard's father Thomas' father is probably Henry Currier, per the same St. Thomas records, who had a brother named Thomas who married a Margaret Russell, and there are very few if any children on the Salisbury, Wiltshire baptismal rolls for them, so I wonder if the Jeffrey and Samuel lines come from these people (or even another generation back) and these children were baptized elsewhere. There is so much interconnectedness in wills and other transactions in the New World, that I have found it odd that Jeffrey and Samuel would have no documented contact with Richard if they were actually related, particularly since Richard was prominent and wealthy, so I have always thought this was no more than a cousinly relationship, and not a close one.

The Richard Currier from Scotland thing has gone around for years, but there is no proof to either prove or disprove it. I know the Strawbery Banke connection, but as said, no proof. Who knows, perhaps Samuel and/or Jeffrey are the ones from Scotland.

I am related to Richard via his eighth grandson, Ebenezer.

I am the daughter of the Original Poster. Lillian Currier was my father's mother. I am actually the one interested in this information. My father was Richard L. O'Neil, born 7/5/1930, d.11/22/1998. His mother was Lillian Currier, b.1910, not sure of her death date. I have names of her parent's, but not much else. She seems to be my brick wall. It was my understanding that she had 3 children. My father, an older son named Harry that I believe is still living, and a younger son named Robert that is deceased, but I don't have that date either. She was married to Harry O'Neil, and after his either passing, or leaving her, she married several more times, tho I don't know who else she was married to. The last I heard, my father referred to her last husband as "the Greek". My father was very closed mouthed about his family for a multitude of reasons, but any information I can get would be much appreciated.

CURRIER

The many friends and acquaintances in Worcester,Boston and elsewhere throughout New England of George Prentice Appleton Currier will be pained to learn of his death Tuesday night , he having passed away, seemingly without pain, just after midnight.

Mr. Currier was born in Holliston, August 16, 1847 and was
nearly 46 years old. He was the son of Augustus N. and the late Margaret Prentice (Dickinson) Currier and removed in his early years with his parents to Worcester, where he attended Worcester Public Schools, the Highland Military Academy, and afterwards completed his education Friends' School, Providence. He entered the employ of Richardson,Smith & Co., Boston, jobbers of woolens, in 1867,
and has remained with the firm and its successors (the present firm of Warren & Blanchard),continuously, By reason
of his connection of this well known firm, Mr. Currier
formed an extensive acquantaince with the tailors and clothing fraternity of New England, his frequent visits will be sadly missed.

Mr. Currier enjoyed good health until May 31st, when he suffered a stroke of apoplexy at his home in Boston, and
was removed to Massachusetts General Hospital, where under
excellent care and treatment, he seemed to make good improvement. On Friday last he was so far recovered to be able to come to his father's home in Worcester and within a day or two he was out upon the street.

He retired early Tuesday night in good spirits, with nothing
unusual about him, and a call at his room 10 o'clock found
him resting comfortably and quietly.
Upon calling him at 7 o'clock yesterday morning, it was discovered that death had occurred peacefully and quietly
during the night, no appearance of any struggle being
apparent. He simply passed quietly away.

He leaves besides his father, Augustus N. Currier, a sister,
Miss Annie D. L. Currier, and a brother, Herbert A. Currier.

note:
On his father's obituary, it lists the spelling of his mother's name as Prentiss

They have the entire Philip J Currier collection there as reference material.

I realized quickly that you need to have a plan prior to going to really get the most out of their vast resources.

I have attached a couple pictures of the collection.

I don't know if this is the one you want but his book - Currier Family Records of USA and Canada (1984) by Philip Joseph Currier, has been filmed and is available to be ordered into any LDS Family History Center on microfilm or microfiche for a small rental fee.

I had the pleasure of interacting with Mr. Currier in February of 2006 when I received his correspondence regarding the volume he was working on at the time. He had mentioned that he could place my line in the "current volume" so I am interested in finding a copy of it. I tried to look him up following our initial interchange of emails but never could quite find contact information for him. I only recently came across the initial letter I received from him as well as the subsequent letter showing our placement in his records.

Does anyone know if anyone is continuing his work? Better question, where does one find copies of his volumes? At this point I believe the New York State Library is going to be my best (and most affordable) option.

Daniel P Currier
(Richard F. Jr.(Waterford, NY), Richard F. Sr.(Waterford, NY), Arthur T(Waterford, NY), Tobias (Waterford, NY), William (Chatham, ON)

Not that anyone knows. The origin of the three Curriers (Richard, Samuel, Jeffrey) has never been found nor has the relationship among the three been established. It's presumed that Richard came from, at some point, Salisbury England; Samuel of Haverhill may - and that's a loose "may" - have been related to Richard (there's a SAR record that gives Samuel as Richard's son, but the sources given haven't been verified).

Jeffrey is a mystery. He just shows up in the Portsmouth and Isle of Shoals records as an adult (court records). His wife's name isn't known and not all of his children are named anywhere (just 3 of them plus a 4th called "X" because we know he existed, but just don't know his name).

Are you related to Jeffrey?

Is Jeffrey Currier, of Isles of Shoals, related to Richard Currier, one of the original founders of nearby Amesbury, MA in 1654?

Richard Currier was born May 3, 1616 in Scotland and arived in Massachusetts around 1641.

The time periods and geographic areas seem too close for this to be a coincidence.
