CUSTER lines

I am trying to find information on 2 CUSTER lines. My 3 times great grandmother Elizabeth Custer is the daughter of Jacob Custer. This line goes back to a John Custer who was born in Franklin County, PA. His parents come up as Paul and Sarah Custer, but there is some debate on if this is the correct lineage and if the information is accurate.

The other Custer line is from Sophia Gillman. Her mother (another one of my 3 times great grandmothers) was also a Custer who was the daughter of Frederick Custer who lived in Johnstown, PA in what is now Richland Twp. His obituary states he was born in Maryland. However, some of the census records say he was born in PA. I cannot find him on any census as a child.

Does anyone out there have any information on these lines or where I can look? I searched the geneology sites for both states but came up empty.

Hi,
I saw your post about Joel G. Custer. General Custer was his cousin.
See the following article about an interesting sword, it mentions Joel, and general custer. My parents have this sword.

http://lbha.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Queries&action...

Joel was my great great great great grandfather. His daughter Sally was my great great great grandmother. She married Preston Abbott, my mother's maiden name is Abbott

Here is the article quoted from the web page

Thanks to Sandy Alexander for bringing this to my attention. Craig County is in Virginia.

General George A. Custer's sword officer's saber was on display when the Craig County Historical Society held an open house to celebrate the opening of The Hunter's Raid Civil War Trail June 1.

The saber is marked U.S. 1863.

According to information gathered from the Historical Society, Custer gave this sword to his cousin, Joel G. Custer, when he visited Joel at his home on Rt. 621 in Craig County. The general was later killed in the Battle of Little Big Horn by the Sioux Indians in 1876.

Joel Custer's daughter, Sally, married Preston Abbott and their son, Bud, received the sword.

Bud Abbott later donated the sword to Masonic Lodge No. 140 in New Castle, of which he was a member. Lodge members loaned the sword to the Historical Society for display.

Also of interest was the old log cabin where Gen. Custer spent three days during his visit to Craig still stands although it has been renovated and an addition added. Descendants of Joel G. Custer still remain in Craig County.
I am currently searching Custer records and have lots of questions about Elizabeth "Libbie" Custer. To the best of my knowledge, Libbie's 3 sisters and mother died before Libbie turned 13. There doesn't seem to be much information available on her childhood and I'm hoping my visit to the archives will answer some questions I have. Libbie met Custer when he was living with his sister & brother-in-law in Monroe and they were later married in the 1st Presbyterian Church. Hopefully I will be visiting the Monroe County Historical Museum in the Spring to see what I can learn. I made notes of your inquiry.

Cheers!

From what I have read Custer attacked a group of Native Americans who were camped out and were peaceful. He killed Chief Little Rock and Chief Black Kettle. The daughter of one of the Chiefs was taken hostage and became the wife of George Custer. When his first wife found out about it she made him leave Monahseetah. She supposedly, gave birth to two children by George Armstrong Custer - a boy and a girl.
She was a very beautiful woman and they were said to be together prior to the day of the battle at Little Bighorn.
I am full-blood Native and a member of the Cheyenne/Arapaho Tribe of Oklahoma. Yellow Bird was said to be adopted by a Bryan who was related to George A. Custer after his death. I think the daughter was adopted out but not by any of Armstrongs Family. The Cheyenne/Arapaho is a matriarchial and the lineage follows the mothers side of the family. Yellow Bird was also, called Yellow Hair because of the blond streaks in his hair.

Pvt. Joseph Custer was married at Pymatuning Twp., Mercer Co., PA. to Nancy M. Drake, 18 August 1861. He was my great grandfather's youngest brother. He "went over the hill and we never saw him again."
He was married by Squire Daniel Stanbaught, son-in-law of Benjamin Custard. Nancy M. Drake Custer-Sample. [William Sample] was an undertaker. Nancy had a son, Myrum M. Custer, b. 18 May 1862. Looking for obituary of Joseph Custer, 1864. Her widows pension was #39,846. I welcome any information on this family. Norma Custer Rice
Myrum m. Mary Sheffler.

Sign the condolence page on Lena Croom Custard's obituary explaining that you are a relative and seeking info.

3.It appears Bernice Winlock lives in the Cleveland, Ohio area
4.
I was surprised to see so many who reference it to South Dakota in your family trees. Montana Territory existed from 1863 until Statehood, in 1889.

It is not in South Dakota [which was not yet a state in 1876], nor was it in Dakota Territory.

I am surprised that so many have this information incorrectly listed.
Where did Rebecca Kuster Holder (b. abt. 1734) die?

Does anyone know where Rebecca Kuster Holder (1734-?) and her husband John Holder (22Jul1725-?) ended up? Everything I've seen says they went to Canada and then returned to PA, but where? Any chance they went to York county?

I find a Rebecca Holder in the records of Canodochly Lutheran Church (Windsor Twp, York Co., PA) as baptismal sponsor to children of Mathias and Esther Becker and Adam and Catharina Holder Schlott. Also members of this congregation are Johannes and Barbara Holder. A John Holder is found on the 1790 and 1800 census for Windsor Twp. There was also a Michael Holder living in Winsor Twp. in the late 1770's and early 1780's -- he was fined as delinquent with the local PA militia. Could he have been a loyalist like the Kusters and related Holders?

Any relation to Rebecca Kuster Holder? Could this be where her family "returned to Pennsylvania"?

Over twenty years ago we visited the Gen. George A. Custer site in Harrison Co, Ohio.
While there, we observed a member of the Ohio Historical Society sifting small amounts of dirt from the area adjacent to what was presumed to be GAC’s birthplace.

If I remember correctly, the searching through the dirt was to find anything pertaining to the
Custer family members in preparation for the possible construction for a Custer museum.

Over the years I have often wondered if this building was constructed. Were any items of interest found in the dirt on this site?

Jo Kester

I've seen references to the "Descendants of Paulus and Getrude Kusters" book having information pertaining to a George Heinrich Holder. This is apparently on pp. 195-196. Since I don't have a copy of the book, I was wondering if someone could let me know the source records for the information pertaining to his birth/baptism and marriage to Anna Margaret Arnold? I might be able to access source records more easily than find a copy of the book. Thanks!

I was born Joni Bird. However, my mother gave me away at birth. So I was raised by good parents til they passed on both from Cancer. I had adoption records unsealed. I was told who my real parents were by Carole Hubbard who is a Judge in OKlahoma County. My oldest son looks just like the picture of Yellow Bird. My oldest daugher had blond hair and steel blue eyes just like "Custer". I have three other children. My birthmothers name was "Spottedhorse"/Birdshead. It is confusing because when Indian children use to be taken away from their families and put in Indian Schools they would give them different names. My grandfather was Armstrong Spottedhorse/Birdshead. My grandmother was Susie Bull/Mankilling who had been married to a Sitting Bull. I wrote to Nara and they sent me allotment papers for my ancestors that go back to 1860's and it is signed by then, President Benjamin Harrison. If you would like any other information contact me at cmodom@verizon.net

Her great grandfather was John W. Custer b. 1828. He was married to Mary A. Possibly Mary Ann or Mary America Hagerty. I do not know John's fathers name.

This would be Arthur Garland Custer. He was born 2-3-1876 AR and married to Addie Mae King. His grand daughter says Arthur's parents were John and Mary and believes Mary's maiden name was Haggerty.

I found in the census a John (born 1829 VA) and Mary (born 1840 AR) Custer in 1880 Little Rock, Pulaski Co., AR). This would be Arthur's parents as he is listed along with his siblings Ida and Beaulah. My friend says this is definitely her great grandparents and great aunts.

John is found in Bryant, Saline Co., AR 1900. Arthur is not married still home with John.

I have no proof John's middle name is Wesley but the census and other records that match have his middle initial as W.

John's wife is shown as Mary A. I searched for a Mary Haggerty/Hagerty. The closest I came was an America Hagerty. She had two brothers (Wesley and Thomas) and in 1850 were living with a very young couple, Thomas and Louisa Barton. I have no idea if they were related. In 1860 Thomas Hagerty is shown as Hagerton and still living with Thomas and Louisa Barton.

My friend's mother says she was always told she was related to General Custer so this is what I am trying to find out.

I have found several John Custer's in 1850 born in VA, around the same year frame which this John was born. Just not sure which one is the right one.

If anyone has a clue, it would be much appreciated.

I am not even sure if Mary Hagerty is Mary Ann or Mary America. Some family trees I found, done by others, has Arthur's parents as John Wesley Custer and Mary Ann Haggerty. But the birthdate for John is way off. My friend says the John Custer buried in AR is her great grandfather.
