Trying to find information about a George Cuthbert, believe that he was a bus driver in Middleborough in 1964/65 and also his address at this time was given as Tweedsmuir Road Leven in Scotland but dont know how accurate this is. He was said to be about 25yrs old in 1965 so we assume he was born around 1940 but again not sure how accurate this is. Any information would be gratefully received

I'm eight years late folloowing up Margaret's message, but I hope someone out there is able to help. I am descended from Richard Cuthbert and Elizabeth, presumably Elizabeth Clayton; actually I'm descended from their son Martin 1775-1841, but I assume I have the right Richard and Elizabeth. But I thought Richard was born at Great Limber Lincs, since he was married at nearby Worlaby. Can anyone confim that Eastrington is correct for his birth, and can anyone say what became of Richard Cuthbert born Great Limber 1743 (and, for that matter, his cousin Richard Cuthbert born Great Limber 1744)?

vseyr gratefjul for ay help offered.

Richard Cuthbert is my great grand father. He married a lady by the name of Lavinia(Lettie). I am trying to determine who his father and mother were and any other history of the family before him. Additionally, Lettie's surname and family history. Richard and Lettie had a son Ancel who is my grand father. Ancel married Laura, Surname unknown. After 5years of marriage Ancel divorced Laura and sometime later married Louise Anetha Freeman. They had a son Sidney S.Cusberth and a daughter Maggie.
If the reader can supply any pertinent information and documentation to verify information , I will be very appreciative.
Thank you,
Emmette H.
I believe that Ruth died in 1971 in Iowa and that Lawrence J. died in 1979 in Colorado. It is my understanding they had 4 children all born I believe in Iowa about 1923, but I don't know specifically where.

It is my understanding that Carmen married a man named Walter Meyers. I would be pleased to have any information you are willing to share.

I will tell you that I am a direct descendant of David and Janet Mitchell Cuthbert through their son Alexander who married Eliza Murray Ogg and their daughter, Isobel, who married Charles Webster Leighton.

Several years ago I was in contact with Della Cuthbert who married Glen Evans. I don't know what has happened to her since she moved from Camano Island near Washington state; hence, I've been unable to continue my genealogy love for my Scottish roots.

Thank you for your response.
Caroline
Thursday, October 23, 1884

• Whilst returning home from Orangeville Saturday evening,
Mr. Thomas Cuthbert, of Lot 2, Con. 5, Mono, met with a serious accident. The night was exceedingly dark, and when going up Purple Hill he found it necessary to turn aside to allow another team to pass. The wheel of the wagon struck a huge stone, the jolt throwing Mr. Cuthbert from the high spring seat to the ground. His scalp was torn from the top of his head to the base of his right ear. Dr. Smith was summoned. Says the Orangeville Gazette: "We are glad to hear that the old gentleman is recovering and will be around again shortly."

I am interested in reestablishing contact with the descendants of the above couple. Unfortunately computer crashes have left me without addresses.
Children:
Carmen Dawn Cuthbert
Shannon Faye Cuthbert
Lawrence James Cuthbert - I believe he is now deceased. He married a Dorels Mitts and they had one child I know of, Nancy.
Denese Cuthbert

My cousin, Della, and I corresponded with some of them several years ago.

Since the other children are probably still living, I am not listing spouses or birth year. However, if I remember correctly, they were all born in Sioux Rapids, Iowa.

Their ancestry goes back to David and Janet Mitchell Cuthbert of Scotland. David's parents were James and Katherine Yeoman Cuthbert.

Caroline (Carol) Lassen

Better late than never! Have been researching my Dimond family and came across your posting. It is of course entirely possible that by now you have resolved this question but just in case you have not....
1) Do have a Google for "cuthberts seeds" - there is an article in the Independent dated 1997 that sheds a little light.
2) Sydney Dimond Cuthbert was bn 1873 (ref Sep 1873 Kensington 1a 237) and his baptismal record, dated 1874, is on Ancestry though it was lurking under Cathbert.
3) His father George Cuthbert married Ellen Dimond in 1867 (ref Dec 1867 Kensington 1a 239 )
4) George's ocupation is shown as a seedsman!!

If you no longer have a paid access to the Ancestry records, post your email address & I will forward using conventional email.

How exciting. Now I just need to find out how/if my own Dimonds fit in here....
Happy Hunting!
Regards
Niki

Conjectures about ABRAHAM CUTHBERT AND HIS CULTURE
by Elizabeth B. Bunting
!Sources for this section are information gathered from my recent visit to Bunclody and Co.Wexford and
from publications purchased at the Vistors Center, Enniscorthy, Co Wexford which follow:
1. Art Kavanagh, THE BATTLES OF 1798, THE BATTLE OF NEWTOWNBARRY, 1996, Irish Family
Names, Bunclody, Co. Wexford, C & R Print, Enniscorthy
2. Daniel J. Gahan, REBELLION, IRELAND IN 1798, 1997, The O'Brien Press, Dublin - This is the
authorized book of the National 1798 Visitor Centre, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford
3. Rory Murphy, THE BATTLE OF NEWTOWNBARRY (BUNCLODY) 1 JUNE 1798

! Who was Abraham Cuthbert? When was he active as a Yoeman in Newtownbarry? Was he of Scotch descent? If so, was he from Co. Cavan (Ulster), a member of John Maxwell Barry's Yoemanry?
Perhaps the best way to find answers is to understand the political, social, and religious factors in his life.
In 1798 Newtownbarry was the scene of fierce fighting between the ruling class of landowners loyal to the English crown and the Irish peasants and farmers, mostly Catholic and Gaelic who harbored many grievances against the English. It was the time of Revolution in America and France - the Age of Enlightenment. Throughout the Counties Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny, and others there was armed insurrection between the haves and the have-nots. The Farmers had only pikes and hand tools - the English had guns and canon . The "Rising" was brutal, heavy and the slaughter was overwhelming. Laws of a most repressive nature had been passed to prevent the growth of peasant agitation and to ensure the survival of the English Ascendancy in Ireland. The English Crown had given the installed Ascendancy estates in Ireland. Since the reformation (Henry VIII), England had insisted Protestantism was the state religion. Cromwell confiscated Gaelic held lands and King William had enforced the plantation system on the Irish countryside. There remained many Irish loyal to the crown but fiercely Catholic. Scotland now part of the English Union, also sent Presbyterian settlers to Ulster and the Orange Order was founded in 1795. It began as a pledge to defend the King and his heirs so long as he or they supported the Protestant Ascendancy;.however, it developed to threaten an English Ascendancy which feared being overthrown by a joint assault of the Presbyterian and Roman Catholic majority. The Orange order spread into Carlow and Wexford, and two Loyal Orange Lodges were established in Newtownbarry.
Before 1798, Newtownbarry was only a hamlet at the confluence of the Clodi and Slaney rivers. It was called Bunclody, as it is known today (2005). John Maxwell Barry, Colonel of the Cavan Militia, lived on his estate in Cavan and subsequently moved from an earlier castle in Cavan to the newly built residence in Bunclody. The Maxwell family had settled in Newtownbarry when the first John Maxwell married Judith Barry in 1719. She was the daughter of James Barry who had acquired the 12,000 acre estate and had changed its name to Newtownbarry. James Barry had also acquired the Manor of Farnham in Co. Cavan from Rev. Robt.Maxwell in 1719, and his son John Maxwell was created Baron Farnham in 1756 (Irish Peerage). By 1796 the Government had authorised local landlords to form infantry and cavalry companies of Yeomen in their areas, so the family now had property, power and title. They had also developed their town into one of considerable importance, as they were granted by George II the authority to hold two annual fairs and markets which were promoted, enlarged and and increased over time.. Practically everyone lived in an estate house and paid their weekly rents to the estate office. Many small holders leased land. They hired or sold their skills to the estate and disposed of their outputs and produce in the Maxwell controlled marketplace. The peasantry was held in their grip. One of the Maxwell owners became Bishop of Dromore in 1765 which gave the family ecclesiastical as well as civil and military importance. By 1798 Col. John Maxwell-Barry inherited the estate. He took a hard line stance and resisted any measure that might allow the Catholics power in his kingdom.
He regarded the town and the estate on which it was located as totally his own preserve, owning every inch of land and practically all the houses. His father and grandfather had built the magnificent St Mary's Church of Ireland on the eminence overlooking the town. The Maxwell-Berry's were strict in their loyalty to their monarch and the church of which he was head. Col John Maxwell- Barry was dominant until his death in 1838.
Bunclody had an Irish quarter known as Irish Street. This was the area of the town where the Irish and mostly Gaelic speaking people were cloistered together from the time when the old Gaelic clans were finally dispersed by the Cromwelians in the 1650's. The forming of distinct areas of a town where the native Irish were settled together was a common practice, especially in Estate towns. It was the area where the real Irish, the artisans and craftsmen, lived and plied their native skills and trades, the area where the old traditions and the old Gaelic ways flourished. It was a clearly marked out area for many generations as having the smallest and poorest houses, often windowless, to escape the dreaded window tax In 1798, many houses and cabins in that sector of Bunclody were burned and destroyed. They were occupied but not owned by the peasants. There is much folk memory of those who were accosted, shot and killed by the Bunclody Cavalry under Captain Kerr. A gallows erected in the Market Square was a prominent place of public execution as was a pillory erected for public attonement. Col. Maxwell-Barry's Bunclody Yeomanry burned some forty homes in the parish in vicious raids.
On the Ist of June, 1798 the day of the battle, the whole defensive force of 700 hundred men, equipped with firearms and two canon, consisted of 450 Offaly [County] Militia, 30 men of the 4th Dragoons, 60 mounted Newtownbarry cavalry under Capt Kerr (NB - signer of Cuthberts dismissal), and 120 Newtownbarry infantry under Captain Richard West. "Captain Kerr's property was at great risk as it lay immediately beside the Carriduff road [main road]. His 124 acre holding was leased from the Maxwell Barry Estate. " [As an aside. Captain Richard Kerr is buried at St. Mary's Church of Ireland, where the Cuthbert children were baptized. His date of death is given as 17 August 1825, aged 66 years].
Was ABRAHAM CUTHBERT in Newtownbarry during the "PEOPLES RISING"? His later discharge by Capt Richard Kerr says in 1821 that he had been with the Newtownbarry Yeomanry several years. Cuthbert had a son Francis, baptized at St. Mary's Newtownbarry in 1804; Susanna Cuthbert's baptismal records are in the St. Mary's register for 1802. We know he was part of the Yeomanry. Maxwell-Barry had an estate in Co. Caven and was head of a Militia unit there. Could Abraham have been part of his retinue in Cavan Co and not been at Newtownbarry in 1798? And since Cuthbert was loyal to the English Ascendancy and a Protestant, could he have been from Scotland - perhaps an Orangeman, maybe even a Presbyterian?
There are Bible records from the great granddaughter of ABRAHAM Cuthbert which claim he was born in Cavan Co. and was married to Ann Groves, the daughter of a Lord Groves in Cavan Co. These Bible records obtained from the genealogical account of Ross E. Nelson of Vancouver, B.C., Canada cite only that they were personal Bible record. As such they only give possible clues. One can surmise that the Cuthbert Family, being on the side of the English Ascendancy might have come from Cavan (Ulster) as transplants from England or Scotland and have been tenants of Maxwell, moving to Newtownbarry in the early years of the town. The descendants of the line through Arthur Groves Cuthbert of Ridgway, claimed descent through the Scots in Inverness and they spoke of being immediately from Newtownbarry, never Bunclody. Because of their loyalty, they may have been privileged to receive a land grant in Canada. As the Colonial Office stated, "The Protestant families of which this list is composed are remarkably sober Industrious and well conducted, can procure the satisfactory recommendations and have generally some of their branches numbers of yeomanry corps, many of these upon lands granted by the British Government within these past two years.
In 1995, I received a query from Kevin Michael Cuthbert over the internet. cuthbert@iaccess.za. He had heard of my interest through Mr. Art Lewis of Syracuse University, who was a descendant of Abraham Cuthbert's first born daughter Ann, who was born in Ireland and married Francis Powell in Canada. Kevin Michael Cuthbert was the fifth in descent from Captain Patrick Cuthbert who had been killed in the Rising in Kilcommon in 1798. The monument is in County Kilkenny, which is just west of Co. Wexford, and south of Co. Carlow. Patrick Cuthbert had five sons: Henry, Kingston and James stayed in Ireland; Edward whose son William went to South Africa, and John who went to Australia in the 1800's. Kevin Michael Cuthbert descended from William Cuthbert of Africa and claimed he had his line completed. I lost touch with him. In the Marriage License Bonds of Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin there is listed the marriage of a Patrick Cuthbert of Gowran, Co Kilkenny, gentleman and Margaret Agar of same [place] spinster, 13 May 1780. Also listed was William of Gowran, Co. Kilkenny, surgeon and Elinor Griffith of same, spinster, 19 April 1780. Also Kingston Cuthbert and Mary Corcoran, 1821 and Henry Cuthbert and Christian Rinhart, 1787. The last two were only given as names and dates. Another Marriage License from Ferns, lists Henry Cuthbert and Christian Rhinhart, 1787. (These last listed marriages were sent me from the Genealogical Office, Dublin, Ireland)

Liz: Could it be that William Cuthbert b: 1685 parents were William Cuthbert b: 1659 in Molesworth and Elizabeth Bannister also born in Molesworth? The IGI shows their marriage 02 JUN 1684 also in Molesworth?? Thanks-Gerry

hi Gerry

Got some details for you about William Cuthbert (b 1765; d 1834).

His father was Leonard Cuthbert*, and his mother was Elizabeth (haven't find her maiden name in the parish records for Irthinglingborough so far). They had another 8 children:

1) Eliza (possibly ELizabeth) - baptised 1744

2)Leonard - baptised 24 June 1747 married Rebecca, who was buried 24 June 1778. Their children were William baptised 8 May 1774 and Leonard baptised 1 March 1776.
William (b 1774) married Sarah, and had 2 sons: William baptised 7 October 1798 and John baptised 10 April 1803.
Leonard (b1776) married Mary, and had 1 child: Rebecca (baptised 7 Dec 18906) who married Joseph Sparrow (b 1808 in Denton, Northants; d 1893 Denton, Northants), and had 2 children, Joseph (b 1832) and Esther (b1833).

3) Mary - baptised 1750
4) Ann - baptised 6 May 1753
5) Susannah - baptised 4 Aug 1755
6) Thomas - baptised 23 April 1758
7) Sarah - baptised 28 August 1761
8) William - baptised 27 March 1763 & buried on 1 April 1763

* Leonard was born 1716 & baptised on 28 October 1716. He died in 1766 and was buried 6 April 1766.
His fathere was William Cuthbert born in the late 1600's and his mother was Mary, also born in late 1600's. William was buried on 16 Jan 1724 and Mary on 13 Aug 1723.
Leonard had 3 siblings:
1) Mary baptised in 1704
2) William baptised 5 June 1707
3) Ann baptised 6 Feb 1714

Also in the parish records for Irthlingborough, there is one John Cuthbert being buried in 1640. Further reearch needs to be done.

Hopes that helps you.

i have found that william cuthbert's parents were leonard and elizabeth cuthbert. as they were born before the 1828 act re registration of births, deaths and marriages, their details would be in the parish records for stanwick.

i am going to Northants county records office tomorrow (wed 3 feb)to trace the cuthberts further back than william.
i will let you know if i have got any more information.

I am related to the Stanwick Cuthberts, by Margaret Cuthbert, daughter of Joseph and Betsy Ann Cuthbert. Betsy's maiden name was Morris.

Margaret was born in 1872 in Thrapson district. She married Harry Wilby Coleman in 1900 and had at least 3 children (2 sons, Fredrick & Robert William, and 1 daughter, Hilda Bertha), and she died in 1952(?).

She had at least 7 siblings: Ada (b c1861), Ellen (b c1863), Morris (b c1867), Edith (b c1871), Annie (b c1874), Owen (b c1877) and Ralph (b c1878).

Her daughter Hilda was my paternal grandmother.
Margaret's family were involved in the shoe industry: Joseph was shoemaker, Ellen a boot closer and Morris, shoemaker's helper.

Margaret moved from Stanwick to Higham Ferrers, Northants, where my gran Hilda was born. Her son Robert William emigrated to Canada with his wife Lilian Goodman and his daugther and her family live in Toronto/Ontario.

Hope this is helpful
