Edward Hedley Cuthbertson

Edward Hedley Cuthbertson was my 3rd great grandfather. He was born Circa 1815 in North Shields, Northumberland and died 29 June 1887 in London, England. He was married to Mary Arkley and I would not have found her unless I had made the connection between my grand uncle Ernest Arkley Cuthbertson's middle name. My grandfather's name was David Peters Cuthbertson--the same as his grandfather's (a son of Edward and Mary) and thus another middle name that is a last name. Two other children of Edward and Mary Cuthbertson carried middle names that are last names--Cook and Cooper. The thing is, I cannot reach back in my Cuthbertson branch because I cannot find the connection of those names. I do not know the names of Edward Hedley Cuthbertson's parents--I have not found a birth date or baptismal certificate for him. I am wondering whether he perhaps was born in Scotland rather than Northumberland. I realize that there are many Cuthbertsons, Arkleys, and Hedleys in the Tynemouth area and just over the Scottish border. If anyone can help me find more names of my family tree--Cuthbertsons--I would be grateful

Hi, and thanks for the information. It seems that we are distant cousins. One point about your information is that I show Robert C. Cuthbertson born on August 3rd, 1840 in Bristol, Pontiac, Lower Canada. I did not know about the other children. William and Charlotte Cuthbertson were my great-great grandparents. One of Robert C. Cuthbertson's daughters was my grandmother, Mabel Matilda Cuthbertson. Robert C. married Selena Jane Knox on February 3rd, 1874 in Clarendon, Quebec.

I knew your grandfather and family. He was my "half" first cousin making you a third cousin. I am 62, grew up in Oklahoma and spent many summers of my youth in Gladewater with my grandmother(your great great grandmother), Maude Wester. My father, Roy McKenzie and your great grandmother, Ella Gipson (not sure of her maiden name), had different fathers. I now live in Florida.

Given the age of this posting, doubtful if you will receive so will refrain from posting a complete response until I receive confirmation back from you.

Gary McKenzie

1950 letter to Harry Weldon Cuthbertson (1892-1968) and wife Rose (1892-1989) in Dayton, OH from Nora in Jefferson City, MO

I have an original handwritten letter dated October 1950 from Nora in Jefferson City, Missouri to her brother Harry Weldon Cuthbertson (1892-1968) and his wife Rose Brown (1892-1989) in Dayton, Ohio in my private collection. Harry Weldon Cuthbertson was born February 1, 1892 to parents Thomas (b.1847) and Georgia (b.1848) in Missouri. He had two sisters, Nora (b.1885) and Margie (b.1887). Harry married Rose Brown (born October 5, 1892) in about 1920 and they had at least one child, William H. Cuthbertson (born about 1926 in Ohio). Harry Cuthbertson died June 20, 1968 and his wife Rose on March 1, 1989.

I am a trained historian and collect old documents and letters which I regularly try to reconnect with living family members for a small fee. If you’re interested in purchasing digital scans and a transcription of the above mentioned letter please let me know. I'll also include any relevant research I've conducted in connection with the document.
Sharon,
Will was my grandfather Cleve's brother. I remember my father speaking of Rose. He also talked about Frances Reece, Will's boys. I barely knew any of them. My understanding is that Will and Rose lived on the original land near Rison. A member of the family in North Carolina did a huge amount of research and published a book. My brothers (they live in Warren) and I have a copy. I live in Minnesota but will be in Warren some time late summer/fall after I'm retired. Do you live in Pine Bluff? Linda Pledger Green married into the Cuthbertson/Green family and has also done lots of research on us. If you are interested, I think I can track down how to contact her. If Frances is still alive, I would love to visit her. I wonder if any of the family have photos, letters, etc. We do have some pictures.

Briefly, the book records that our Cuthbertson line is Scot Irish and came around 1743. They ended up in Mecklenburg County, NC where our relatives still live. Our direct ancestors came to Rison in 1853 - William Julius and Lurena McSwain Cuthbertson. Will and Cleve had other (brothers - Duncan, Stanfield, and ? and sisters Belle, Minnie, one more?).

Hope this is of interest. Feel free to contact me.

Charlotte Prosser was William Cuthbertson's wife, being married in 1820. She was born in 1798 in Angleterre and died on January 11th, 1858 in Bristol, Quebec. Their only offspring was Robert C. Cuthbertson, who was born in Bristol, Quebec. If there were more children of which I have no record, I would very much appreciate being so informed. Robert married Selena Jane Knox on February 3rd, 1874 in Clarendon, Quebec. Robert and Selena were my great-grandparents. They had 7 children, including my grandmother, Mabel Matilda Cuthbertson who married Ernest William Chubb.

David
I have the wife of William Cuthbertson being married to Charlotte. I have the christening record of what i have as the 3rd child, Jannet born in 1831 and it clearly states that her mother is Charlotte, also the youngest son I have in my database is James and on his marriage record to his 2nd wife lists his parents as Charlotte. So I agree that William's wife was Charlotte.

James Cuthbertson born 1844 son of William Cuthbertson and Charlotte Prosser His 2nd marriage was to Margaret Kemp, daughter of Joseph Kemp and Julia Elizabeth Blackburn. The 2nd marriage occured 14 Oct 1891 Carleton Place, Ontario. On this marriage record Margaret is recorded as Mrs.M.J. Watson , a widow. James and Margaret are found on the 1901 Census of Almonte Ontario with 3 children: Joseph born 1895, Margaret born 1898, and Janet born 1901. The family then disappears. Looking for info on what happened to this family, James , Margaret and children. Also can't find Margaret Kemp's 1st marriage.

Hello,
I'm trying to further research on my ancestors John and Martha Seaton Cuthbertson. Any info other people may have would be greatly appreciated. John was born circa 1756 in Northumberland, England. He died 9 Feb 1846 in Lowick, Northumberland, England. John had been previously married to Mary Graham. Martha Seaton is a daughter of John Seaton and a native of Berwick upon Tweed. She was born circa 1765 in Northumberland; died 22 Dec 1849 in Lowick. Their son George (born circa 1806 in Lowick) is my Great x 4 Grandfather who emmigrated to Blandford Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada with his wife, Grace Hay, and 4 sons. If you need more information, I do have a public tree on Ancestry.com which lists all children of the above mentioned and most of their spouses.

William Cuthbertson, Son of James & Euphemia Turner - Who was his wife?

I have in my database that the wife of William was Charlotte Prosser, that they had 8 children between 1821 & 1844, emigrated to Canada with the Cuthbertson family, where 5 of the children were born after 1832.

However in the last few months I have been in touch with a couple of ladies [who are first cousins to each other] who are firmly of the view that William married a Margaret Orr on 7 July 1820 at Carmunnock, Lanark, Scotland & that they had 8 children between 1823 & 1839 & have an entry in the 1841 Scottish census.

The ladies concerned have trees posted on Ancestry [which has now been privatised] & www.tribalpages.com. A search on the latter will soon find it.

I first raised my concerns about this back in a posting to the Cuthbertson messageboard on 6 January 2010 when it appeared that some descendants of James & Euphemia Turner were incorporating the Margaret Orr marriage into their database.

My view is that the William Cuthbertson who married Margaret Orr is NOT the son of James & Euphemia Turner.

Can I please ask all the James & Euphemia Turner researchers that if you have the William Cutherbertson/Margaret Orr marriage in your tree that you are comfortable with the logic.
If you are please let me know.
Thanks
David

My father passed away in 2006 and he never really talked about his family in Scotland. John came to Australia at age 18 and only went back on 3 seperate occasions. I know he was 1 of 7 children to Sarah and Samual. The other siblings that I know of are Charles, James and Barbara.
If you have any info for me you can contact me at aileenandjames@bigpond.com

Thankyou

On 17 December 2009 I sent the following to her.
"I have not looked at your tree in detail but one specific point which concerns me is that you have William, son of James & Euphemia Turner married to Margaret Orr on 7 July 1820. This is at odds with my information.

You correctly have the death of William but I believe that William emigrated to Canada with most of his siblings & both parents well before the 1841 Scottish census. Indeed all his children from 1832 onwards were born in Norway Bay, Pontiac Co, QC, Canada.
You also have a Warren Cuthbertson, brother of William. I feel that is an unusual name for a Scots lad born in 1819. Do you have a source for him?"
I have not as yet had any reply.
William Cuthbertson might well be an ancestor of Ruth but I don't see how he can be the same William as ours.

An invite to view your tree would be much appreciated.

Regards

David

hi david!

great to hear from you. i just mentioned you to another cuthbertson seeker, only today! i mentioned the pdf file you created for the descendants of james cuthbertson and euphemia turner.

the inclusion of warren cuthbertson was added from info i received from rebecca, and also from ruth cuthbertson in england. james and euphemia's son, william, is ruth's ancestor. he moved to quebec, but his son returned, and settled in stoke-on-trent, where ruth lives to this day.

i believe i still have your e-mail address somewhere. i'm happy to send you an invite to my ancestry.ca tree.

best regards,
heather

ps: no, george is not a baby any longer...just turned 6 in december, and is a growing concern! i'm afraid he'll have completed all the works of oscar wilde by his next birthday!

Thank you for answering so quickly, but no, the families are not the same, maybe somewhere down the line, but not that I can see.

Hi Heather,
I did ask Rebecca for further details but she has strong reservations about giving me any information for privacy reasons.
I wondered if any other researcher on this messageboard had been able to fit together further details of the branch. Nothing so far. I have relatives in BC so will ask them if they could inspect the official registers or just wait until I can get there myself.
How is your George - not the wee baby any more that I remember from one of your photographs I bet?

Regards

David

Hi Heather,
What evidence do you have to say that Lewis Cuthbertson [1811 - 1890, son of jame & Euphemia Turner, had a sibling named Warren?
Also, sibling John [b1797] did not move to Canada with his parents & siblings probably because he was already maried at the time of the emmigration.
Regards

David

Hi Laurie

I don't know if you've been in touch with David Millan in Scotland. He prepared an in depth genealogy of the descendants of James Cuthbertson (b.1771) and Euphemia Turner (v.1777). At least 10 of their 12 children settled in Quebec, in the Pontiac area. Let me know if you would like the document and I will be happy to forward it. I have it in Word and in PDF.

Regards,
Heather

Possibly. My ancestors with these surnames are Lewis Cuthbertson (b.1811, Lanarkshire) and Elizabeth Reid (b.1814 Peebleshire). Lewis' and his siblings (unsure about parents James C. and Euphemia Turner) all moved from Scotland to Canada in the early 1800's.

Lewis has a brother John, but he married Margaret Sheilds in Scotland. John and brother Warren are the only ones whose dates/places of death have not yet been found. All other siblings died in Quebec.

If this is your family let me know, and I will send you a very comprehensive document on the descendants of my James Cuthbertson and Euphemia Turner.

Heather
