Correct Birth Info for Nathan Cutler, Husband of Betsey Travers.

I have recently acquired several DAR applications that indicate that Nathan Cutler, a revolutionary war vet was born in 1758 in Peekskill, New York, NOT 1756 in Coeymans, New York. This makes sense to me since I am looking for the ancestors of Nathaniel Cutler of Bedford, NY. I believe this branch may be related to my Nathaniel branch. My Nathaniel has a sister named Zilpha. Nathan (above) had a son named John who married a Zilpha Utter. There is no way that this is just a coincidence.

Can anybody show me proof of Nathans birth in Coeymans? EVERY online tree I found with Nathan Cutler in it states his birthplace is Coeymans. I am sure this is just a matter of people coping data without verifying it, but it has been so accepted I imagine it will be very difficult to convince others that they have the wrong info. Even the popular "A Cutler Memorial and Genealogical History" has the Coeymans information, but they clearly state their info is not solid.

The DAR applications come various close family members dating back to 1901.

I look forward to hearing what you all make of this.

Thanks.

Phil Hayes

Thank you for your reply. Yea, that was my grandfather...his full name was Charles Sherman Cutler. I have my grandfathers birth certificate but all that was on it was his father's name James and a mother named Letha. I have since discovered information that leads me to believe that my grandfather's mother's name was Lea Shepherd. She was a widow who had been married to Franklin VanCamp. I just can't seem to find any more information on James.

Thomas Cutler, b ca 1799 Virginia

Seeking the parents and siblings of my 3rd great-grandfather Thomas Cutler (born ca 1799 in Virginia, died July 1849 in Miami County, Ohio).

On 12 September 1826 in Fayette County, Ohio, he married Jane Fitzhugh (b ca 1807 in Virginia, died July 1849 in Miami County, Ohio.) Jane was the daughter of William Fitzhugh and Elizabeth Catesby Cocke, who were married 5 July 1793 in Northumberland County, Virginia.

Both Jane and Thomas, as well as their 3 youngest daughters died in a cholera epidemic.

I'm hoping somebody with Virginia Cutlers might have an "unattached" Thomas Cutler who could possibly be my ancestor.

Any hints and clues greatly appreciated!
Ruth Ann

Maybe the Benjamin came from Benjamin Disraeli who was P.M. of England at some stage around then!!
My B.R.C's father's wife looks to have possibly come from the Dockyard area of London - East London - so that's narrowing the gap with your ancestors-but I'm hoping his death cert. will give me some clues.
Cheers,
LIZ

Well that's a good point, about the rareness of Benjamin Cutlers. What I have in my family, from the IGI(British Isles) is:

Mary CUTLER
Gender: F
Christening: 29 Jun 1817
Address: Cross Street Hatton Garden New Jerusalemite, Holborn, London, England
Father: Benjamin Cutler
Mother: Sarah

Sarah CUTLER
Gender: F
Christening: 24 Oct 1824
Address: Waterloo Road New Jerusalemite, Lambeth, Surrey, England
Father: Benjamin Cutler
Mother: Sarah

Benjamin CUTLER
Gender: M
Christening: 19 Nov 1821
Address: Waterloo Road New Jerusalemite, Lambeth, Surrey, England
Father: Benjamin Cutler
Mother: Sarah

Dinah CUTLER
Gender: F
Christening: 2 Jan 1820
Address: Waterloo Road New Jerusalemite, Lambeth, Surrey, England
Father: Benjamin Cutler
Mother: Sarah
Note: Birthdate from IGI  04 Dec 1819

There is also a Thomas CUTLER
Gender: M
Adult Christening: 8 Jun 1817
Address: Waterloo Road New Jerusalemite, Lambeth, Surrey, England

`````````````````
Mother is Sarah Green.
From FreeBMD
Deaths SepQ1837
CUTLER, Benjamin,
Bishopsgate, Vol.2 pg 78
1841 Census
St Olave Silver St, Middx
Sarah Cutler age 52 <1789>
Dinah age 21
Jane age 33
………………………………………………………
Mary Cutler is my ancestor. She married Edward WARLAND in 1948 St Pancras, and died in 1899. On their marriage certificate it lists Mary's father as Benjamin CUTLER, Porter, deceased.
Not too sure about that!! It now looks as if the portraits may have been painted by a talented granddaughter in Australia.
Benjamin Cutlers were extremely rare in U.K. so I don't want to give up on a connection. I've sent to Sydney for B.R.C's (and his wife's) Death Certificates in the hope that parents' names and places of birth are included; as they usually are on N.Z. death certificates - I'm hoping Aussie ones are as good!!! I want to pin down his father William as I suspect the family tree may go back to Hampshire before London.
Cheers
LIZ STANLEY
I have in my tree a Benjamin Cutler from London in that era but have little info other than a name and that he died 1837 in Bishopsgate, London. So not the same person, but possibly related (cousin?). Mine because associated with the Church of New Jerusalem ("New Church") according to baptismal records, was married to Sarah Green. They had a son, Benjamin, in addition to at least 3 daughters.
Any connections?
You're right, it's not really the perfect venue for finding living persons, as posters are discouraged from providing details about others still alive.
There is, however, a message board here on Rootweb/Ancestry for "Lost Family & Friends". Look under message board topics.
This may not be the perfect venue, but I am looking for an old neighbor of mine. Mark cutler and he would ahve been born in late 1964 or early 1965. He moved to Boca Roton FL before 1979 and I only heard from him once after that. He has a younger sister Cindy born about 1966. I knew him when we both lived in Yorktown Heights NY. I am hoping someone searching that family may have come across him or sign of him. he will know me as Carol Allen.
In the 1790 US Census, I have found an Ebenezer and Abner Cutler living in Cortlandt, Westchester, New York.
In both households, there was one free male over 16 and two free white females.
I cannot find them in any other records of any type.
Gideon Benjamin Cutler
I have a 1982 ed of Bonnie Bogenrief's "Cutler Memorial and Genealogical History" and I was wondering if any headway had been made on identifying Gideon's grandparents.
Bonnie wrote that a census record has Gideon claiming his father's birthplace as New Hampshire but she had not made any headway yet on establishing his date of birth or parents.
I have also reviewed Nahum Sawin Cutler's history to little avail (There is an interesting lead in John Cutler's descendants but I am making no headway getting any info on that John) but that is not very surprising as I do not know John's age at the time of his marriage to Mabel.
Any help would be appreciated
I would appreciate any information on this family. Andrew is buried in Middle Ridge Cemetery, Amerherst Township, Lorain, Ohio.
11. John born 17 Apr 1845 in Ohio and died bef 1910.
Leonard's second marriage was to Adaline. She's on the 1870 census with Leonard and a son, Mirvin (not sure if he's Leonard's son with Chloe or Adaline's by a previous marriage. Mirvin was born abt 1853, the same year Chloe died).
Most of the information I have, I got from a biography on Andrew (child #10).
Cutlers in Wheatacre, Norfolk, England
I am researching the Wrinch and Cutler families of Wheatacre Parish. I have tracked my immigrant ancestor, James Cutler (b. 1815) from the state of Ohio in America back to the Parish of Wheatacre, All Saints in Norfolk. Through the FamilySearch website I was able to find his birth record which indicates that his parents were Robert Cutler and Sarah Wrinch. They were married in Wheatacre in 1806 and I found a death record for a William Wrinch, age 75, died 1808...I believe he is Sarah's father or possibly grandfather. I have not been able to find any other records on the Wrinch line. I have searched all of the Wheatacre and Burg St. Peter's records I have access to in order to find more information on the Wrinch line (i.e. William's parents) or on the Cutlers, without any luck. Any information is greatly appreciated.
Cutlers with Roots in England
Hi all,
My own family of Cutlers lived in the Midlands in England,around the Derbyshire and Nottingham areas,throughout the generations up unti about 1900 the tradition of carrying certain first names on has been fairly consistant.
Recurring names are Rebecca,Mary,Hannah and Elizabeth and John, Thomas,Samuel and George.
I have also noticed that around several areas of Britain patterns of these names occur.
Concentrations of Cutler famlies seem to be in the following areas,
Norfolk, Suffolk, Dorset,Worcestershire,Derbyshire,Nottingham,Lincoln and Yorkshire.
I understand that the surname Cutler is an occupational name and therefore it is unlikely that all are related as many may have change their names from say Smith (blacksmith)to Cutler.
Recently I have had a Y DNA test done to see if any one elses DNA matched with my own. As the Y chromosome is passed from father to son down the generations the test is at the moment only suitable for male participants.
Oddly enough in all the databases I checked no other Cutlers matched, the nearest match could be a surname of Mills.
I have to date a confident paper trail back to abt 1750 with anecdotal evidence back to abt 1615 for my ancestors but at the moment no sign of anyone called Mills.
If anyone with the surname Cutler that has links to any of the places mentioned and is thinking about DNA testing I would be very interested to hear about your results so we can compare them to see if any links exist,
many thanks
Paul
It states she is the daughter of Daniel Bailey and Zilpha(etta) Cutler. I think this is the family you are looking for. They are also listed in the 1860/1870 US Census under Daniel Bailey in Manhattan in the 20th Ward 3rd District. Emeline is listed with Daniel but Zilpha is listed as Sylvia or Sophia but I believe this to be them. I have requested the certificate and will ship it off to you when I receive it.
I am looking for any information about a Zilpha Cutler who married someone named Bailey and lived in New York City circa 1890. She is the sister of Nathaniel Cutler who lived in Bedford, NY and possibly the daughter of John.
CUTLER Norfolk, England and Liverpool (1800s)
Okay this is a long shot.
In the 1800's a man surnamed Cutler had (at least) 3 sons. When this man passed away, he left his massive fortune to the 3 sons. 2 of the sons argued with another and he joined the Navy, jumped ship in Liverpool and his Cutler side settled there (he had a son in 1889 born in Liverpool if that helps with the timeline).
I'm looking for anyone from the Cutler side who remained in Norfolk, to try and add some missing pieces to the family tree.
I don't have much info at all as yet. I will add to this if I find any.
It is a long shot but any advice would be grateful.
I think I may have some interesting info for you. Also... with the additional info you provided, I may be able to go back and research more so that we can make the connection. I have been aggressively researching the Cutler family for close to a year now. I once lived in area where they lived. Where was your Charles in 1930? Was he married?
Contact me off list and I will send you some stuff.
phil [at] hayesfamily.us
(replace [at] with an @ and remove the spaces)
Hi Phil. I have found your Cutler family tree very helpful. My future son in law is a Cutler who's grandfather, Joseph Edward Cutler was born in Mt Kisco in 1903 to Charles A. Cutler who died in Danbury Ct in 1963 at age 87 yrs which puts his birth also in Mt Kisco in 1875. I had been reseaching the Nathaniel Cutler family to find a connection but was unable to until I saw your reference of the Cyrus Cutler family in 1880 US Census. The youngest son, and your Annie Yerks sister, is listed as Agustus C. Cutter who I believe now is our ancestor. He is listed in the 1920 census as August Cutler and then in the 1930 as Charles Cutler. He must have started using his middle name later in life. I saw your reference to the older ancestor John Cutler. I have found no Westchester records in that name but there are some intereting legal records for a Joseph Cutler of White Plains for early 1800's in the Westchester Archives. Have you come across any other references to Augustus Charles Cutler in your research? I can provide you info on his family going forward to present. His hiers married into the Kilburn family also a very prominant early colonial and old English family name.
To Phillip and Lupine 10: Yes, Abigail Robbins was the 2nd wife of Hezikel Cutler. She is my 6th gr grandmother. The name of Clark goes through my ancestry too. I would be interested to know if Susanah was related to other Clarks in my family as all of my ancestry begins in Killngly CT. I don't have any info on the Cutlers other than Abby married one. I would love any info Phillip or anyone could provide me on the Cutler/Clark families. Please contact me at: im2funny4u@juno.com.
Hello Phillip,
Sorry, I don't have any additional information on CUTLER that would help answer your interesting question. I'm not a CUTLER researcher. However, should I come across more biographical information on them I shall post it.
Based on Section (IV) of the biography here, it does seem a possibility with Hezekiah's 2nd wife, Mrs. Abigail Robbins. Which begs the question: Did Manasseh have additional half-brother(s) or step-brother(s)?
Hi there. You seem to have quite a bit ok knowledge about Manasseh Cutler. Last year, I acquired a Daguerreotype photograph of a Cutler relative from Bedford, NY. Her name was Araminta Cutler. The photo came with a typed out note. Here is what it said (complete with typo's/spelling errors).
"A brother was born in 1836. Her first ancestor in America came from England to Mass in 1634. Her only illustrious ancestor was Rev Manasch Cutler, who was one of three sent by Wash. to open up the N.W. Territory; wrote the Ordinance of 1787; was a member of Congress, etc. He was half brother to Araminta's Great-gr.,gr.,gr., grandfather."
My question is... Did Manasseh Cutler have a half brother? I can't seem to find any reference to one.
Thanks.
Phil Hayes
