Charles Henry Stanhope Dagg / Elizabeth Lilian Ross Dagg

Searching for information on Charles Henry Stanhope Dagg , whom I believe to be the son of Charles Henry Dagg and Anna Maria St John Caldwell, born in Dublin in 1858. Only 'sightings' are the 1871 English census when he was living in St. Albans, Herts. and the crew manifesto of the Duke of Sutherland and Wick which arrives in Sydney NSW in December 1876.
And Elizabeth Lilian Ross Dagg born 1865 in Oxton, Cheshire. Appears on 1891 & 1901 censuses but then 'disappears'. Seems to have called herself Lilian/Lillian or Lily. Was a governess/teacher.
Any information gratefully received as hit a brick wall with both these.
Susan

Re: Mary Richardson nee Dagg, Carlow

Dear Helen

Greetings from Auckland, New Zealand.

I have been researching my Dagg ancestry and in the process came across some messages you posted on genealogy.com, and now ancestry.com.

I'm particularly interested in the message regarding Thomas Richardson of Carlow who married MARY DAGG of Carlow Parish on 4 April 1841.

My great-great grandfather was a John Dagg born about 1825 in Carlow, Ireland. He and his wife Anne raised a family in Brighton after their marriage in 1857. John ran a drapery/haberdashery business.

Several points interest me:

1. That MARY DAGG was the daughter of ROBERT and DOROTHEA DAGG.

According to a certified copy of John Dagg's marriage certificate his father's name was Robert Dagg (merchant.) John Dagg named his first and only son, Robert Thomas, after his father.

John Dagg had two sisters living with him in Brighton - Dorah Dagg in 1861 (who later married) and Sarah Dagg in 1871,1881,1891,1901, and she died Sarah Dorothea Dagg age 77 Brighton 1906.

3. The names Agnes and Olivia, daughters of THOMAS AND MARY RICHARDSON.

One of the Brighton Dagg daughters was Agnes Olivia (born 1865.)

The name similarities suggest that John Dagg and Mary Dagg were siblings. Do you know if your Mary Dagg had sisters?

Another thing I'd like to mention is that I've viewed a Royal Irish Constabulary record for a John Dagg of Carlow, enlisted in 1839 aged 20 and discharged/resigned in 1851. The age isn't quite right as my John Dagg should have been 14 at the time (he could have lied about his age) but his discharge date is feasible. He could have moved to England and married there in 1857. Apparently the name Dagg doesn't appear that often in Carlow, so this could be my John Dagg or a relation.

I'm not sure that any of this is of help to you, but it's worth a try. If you can help clarify some facts for me that will be a bonus.

Kind regards

Bruce Paine
brucepaine@ihug.co.nz
www.brucepaine.co.nz

Re: Looking for Sarah Jane Hopkins

Sarah Jane Hopkins died during childbirth to her 9th child and is buried at St Johns cemetary near Bethany, MB. The child Anna Jan "Jennie" was adopted by Carl and Anna Booth. James Dagg was born Oct 3, 1858 in Brockville, ON and died Jan 22 1930. Sarah's parents were Jospeh Hopkins (b July 5, 1844 in Wicklow Ireland; died Feb 10, 1913) and Elizabeth Blair (b1844 in Ireland) and died Jan 8, 1893 of a heart attack). Jospeh emigrated to Canada in 1857 with his parents and farmed in Somerville (E), Victoria County, ON. In 1878 he and his 3 eldest sons came to MB to homestead SW 28-16-17. In the Spring of 1879 he returned to ON to fetch his wife and other children. Joseph and Elizabeth were married Oct 21, 1864. Elizabeth's parents were RObert and Mary A Blair. Jospeh's parents were Edward and Jane Hopkins, they were listed in the 1839 Fitzwilliam estate rental records in southwest Wicklow (Corndog or possibly Cronyhorn), Ireland. They emigrated to Canada in 1857 via Lord Fitzwilliams assisted emigration program and settled in Somerville ON. Lord Fitzwilliam was trying to reduce the number of tenants on his estate.

I am a Great Great Grandson of Jospeh and Elizabeth Hopkins.

I have a Thomas Dagg "way back" in my line. It appears there is little interest in this name DAGG, although it's my maiden name.

I have info regarding Thomas' siblings and a LITTLE about his parents (I would love MORE info about his parents), but I'm more than reasonably sure that this would be the sibling to "my" RICHARD DAGG who married Jane Taylor. There were TEN children in this generation.

I'll have to look, but perhaps these boys are siblings?

Marybeth

I am searching for information about these 2 sisters, daughters of Robert Alexander Dagg and Elizabeth Bull, both from Cork. The girls were born in 1861 and and 1863 respectively in Cheshire. Emily appears in the English census of 1881 and I know from a marriage notice in The Times that she was dead by the summer of 1885 but I can't discover where she died and I have searched the death registers for England. It is possible she was in Ireland.Elizabeth who seems to have been called Lillie, appears on the 1901 census and then disappears.
Sightings gratefully received!

Hi Ronald;
Just to let you know that the Daggs of Kincardine have been extensively researched by Ainsley G. Dagg. His research took him some 30 years, and his work is posted on the Dagg Families of Canada website at www.callaghan-cullen.com. If you'd like to get in touch with me directly, please e-mail jann@callaghan-cullen.com. Your uncle Fred will want to see Ainsley's work, and perhaps write to him. I know Ainsley would appreciate seeing any updates on your branch of the family tree as well. Do you know if Mary died before George remarried or was there some sort of divorce? Maybe you could forward your info to me? I am in the process of starting up a Dagg family resource website. I have quite a few researchers who have already forwarded their family trees to me, to be included on the website, in hopes of connecting with another family member. All data submitted will be posting as the research of each individual submitter......the website is just to centralize all of the data.
James Dagg

Hi Norman;

I've been through tons and tons of data looking for James Dagg McKnight and have come up with absolutely nothing to date. I have checked all of the available census records and come up with no more than what you already have. I have gone through reams of microfilms and cannot find a marriage record for John McKnight and wife, nor a birth record for young James. Neither can I turn up (so far) any property records in the area for them. I've been through all of the available legal documents and do not turn up any adoption records either. The family seems to have moved on or disseminated by the 1870's and although I have records of some 2000 Daggs, they do not turn up in any of them. Sorry, wish I could be of more help. Bert Dagg is a friend so I have been trying to help him find this connection. If I come up with anything, I'll pass it along.

Jann.
James Dagg

Hi again Norman;
Checked my e-mails and didn't find anything recent from you, so maybe when you sent me the e-mail it was to the old address? Anyway, I am going to be doing some more research on your James Dagg this week. You mentioned in another message that you have James baptism document...could you possibly e-mail me a copy? It would be a great help in determining which records to start looking at. Some of these microfilms take me days and days to get through as they involve sometimes 30 or 40 years worth of records. Others are reproduced (in part) in written books and records. My new e-mail address is f-cullen@home.com. (If not e-mail then maybe you can just mail it to me?) I'm also looking at trying to determine just where and when James and Jean Dagg emigrated to in Canada initially. Look forward to hearing from you, and hope I can turn up something here in Canada.
