Hi Jan
I'm researching, for a friend, William Ensor Dalgleish born circa 1836 in Langholm. He died 1905 in Dumfriess, and was married to Mary Irvine Plato in 1859 at Haddom, Dumfriess. He worked with horses all his life - as a groom and coachman - and I wondered if he worked for one of the landed families in the area. Do you see any connections?
Chudleigh

Greetings Julia, I just found this old post and wondered if you are still in Ancestry. My ancestors are Thackeray from Yorkshire and one went to Canada and married there before going back to Yorkshire and then to Fall River, MA. I'd love to see your Thackeray information. I sent an email with details to the address you shared in your post but it came back to me. I look forward to hearing from you. Priscilla

Hullo Jan, Yes, I recognise the Dalgleish family in the Bible; Robert and Matilda were my great grandparents and their son John born in 1865 was my Grandfather, John had 8 children with my grandmother Jane Bulman and their youngest son Ronald was my Dad (who died in 1987) I am so excited to hear of somebody who knows about them. My maiden name is Joyce Dalgleish and I am 64 yrs. old. I have 4 children and 9 grandchildren so if you would like to get in touch with me, I would be very happy. I will give you any details I know about the family.

Hello Heather
Here are some General Register of Scotland (GROS) index entries. All the certificates are available online at scotlandspeople.gov.uk and the information will enable you to look them up very quickly. it costs about 6GBP (10USD?)for 30 credits. Hint search for the lot at once and you only pay 1 credit for the indexes then 5 credits for each certificate Just put Cairn in the forename field and Dalgl% in the surname field to find them all. The percentage symbol is a wild card and will find the Dalgleish name variants that happen all the time.
Year	Surname	Forename	Sex	District	City/County/MR	GROS Data
1908	DALGLEISH	ALEXANDER CAIRN	M	ST GEORGE	EDINBURGH/MIDLOTHIAN	685/01 0813
1905	DALGLEISH	CHRISTINA CAIRN	F	OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK	/DUNBARTON	501/00 0545
1872	DALGLEISH	JAMES CAIRNS	M	GREENLAW	/BERWICK	743/00 0030
1903	DALGLEISH	JANE CAIRNCROSS	F	OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK	/DUNBARTON	501/00 0547
1905	DALGLEISH	JOHN CAIRNS	M	NAIRN	/NAIRN	123/00 0123
1879	DALGLEISH	NINIAN CAIRNS	M	DUNBAR	/EAST LOTHIAN	706/00 0155
1871	DALGLEISH	PETER CAIRNS GI	M	ST GEORGE	EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN	685/01 0902
1900	DALGLEISH	ROBERT CAIRNS	M	NEWINGTON	EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN	685/05 1338
1883	DALGLEISH	SAMUEL CAIRNS	M	DUNBAR	/EAST LOTHIAN	706/00 0157
You may need to paste it into a word document to get it to format correctly.
Regards
Iain

I am trying to trace my dad's paternal line. His grandfather James Cairns Dalgleish brought his family to Canada early 1900's. I don't know anything of his parents or siblings, except that he was born in East Lothian in 1872 or 1873.
However, amoung his children are the names John (my grandfather) and Isabelle, both of which are names from many generations in East Lothian. Also, his middle name Cairns was given to three of his sons (and one the initial H) I see there were lots of Cairns in East Lothian too. (actually lots of Isabellas and Johns too)
My dad also thought his dad had a brother Ninian, although I am thinking maybe Ninian was actually a brother of James from East Lothian as I find records of Ninian C Dalgleish born 1880 in East Lothian (he ended up in the U.S.)

Does this fit with anyone else's history?

All this is interesting. I have a John Dalgleish (b. 1849, Greenlaw, Berwickshire, d. 1894 Chelsea, London, Prof Baker) who married a Rebecca Carter in 1875. His Father was William Dalgleish (b. 1824 Kelso Roxburghshire, d. 1885 Chelsea, London, Prof Baker) John's eldest son was William (I have no middle name but Alexander is used in the family) b. 1876 Holburn, London) The last record I have of him is in the 1901 census living in Chelsea employed as a Postman.

Hi Christine, Indeed it would seem we are related. Isabella came out from Annan to NZ in the early 20th century around 1907. She went from Wellington to Thames, Coromandel where she married and became a Marshall. I think Violet (was that your grandmothers name), definitely lived with Isabella in Pipiroa with her two brothers. They had a huge extended family and due to the land being swampy were pretty poor by all accounts. Marshall was a figurehead in the community and organised many events and gatherings at the local hall. My grandmother Margaret, was born in the Brian Boru Hotel in Thames, she was the eldest. As it was in those days she was pregnant and married by 15. I have a picture here with the entire family. Where do you live in NZ? I am in Auckland. Best Regards Victoria

Hi Victoria, I have just read about your relative Isabella Robinson and wonder if she had a brother William Dalgleish, born around 1880 in Annan to Margaret Dalgleish.I believe his mother later married Mr Scott. I also live in NZ. My grandmother, the daughter of William Dalgleish was sent to live with a family in 1920. She came with her 2 brothers and lived with the Marshall family in Pipiroa. I wonder if Isabella was married to one of the Marshall family.I am still trying to put the pieces together and would love to hear from you, Christine

I wonder if William had a sister Isabella who was sent to New Zealand earlier. Perhaps William's children were sent to her.William died in the war in 1914.

I don't know of this Elizabeth Dalgleish (ne Livingstone) but I do have a great-grandmother (dec) of this name with different spelling. She married my great grandfather Archibald Dalgliesh and lived in Trafalgar, Victoria, Australia. She died 26/6/1903. I hope you find the links you are seeking to complete your research.

Hello, I don't have that specific info., but I did find a Janet Aitken who married Thomas Dalgleish, both born ca. 1765, had two known children, in fact twins, Janet & Frances b. 20 Jan 1788 in Selkirk. I don't have any descendants from this family. Thanks for asking!
Hello Katie,
I have a copy of the death cert. for Thomas Dalgleish. Have many other certificates as well, including death cert. for the parents of Thomas. I too would love to know just where Thomas & Mary Jane are buried. I have been told that they are buried in the local church yard near where they died. Which line do you come down through? I am through their baby son Arthur, who was only 5 months old when his dad dies, and 6 months old when his mom died. No one know why grpa was sent to foster homes when his older siblings went to live with their grandparents, William & Helen (Govenlock) Dalgleish. Am anxious to hear from you and to share with you what I have.
Thanks,
Kathy (Dalgleish) Gregory
bob48kat45greg@yahoo.com

Dalgleish DNA Study

A paper has recently been published by researchers from the Department of Genetics at Leicester University. This looked at 40 British surnames and their variants - including the names Dalgleish and Daglish.

Some years ago the researchers - Professor Mark Jobling and Dr. Turi King - contacted people with the surnames being studied requesting DNA samples. Under the terms of the study, the identities of the participants are confidential; the results are by surname only.

The results of the study can be found in the Supplemental Table here:
http://mbe.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/msp022/DC1

and the full article here:
http://mbe.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/msp022v1

The results of this study give some excellent matches with my Daglish DNA Study, suggesting that Daglish may be a variant of Dalgleish (as shown in many surname dictionaries, but which has so far been difficult to confirm through paper records).

Anyone interested in participating can find details of the Daglish DNA Study at:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/DaglishDNA/default.aspx

With best wishes,
Stephen Daglish

Pattricia,

I am glad you got my message. I wasn't sure you would still be monitoring this forum since it has been nine or ten years since you posed your question. I sure wish I would have ran across it earlier so that you could have reconnected with Muriel.

I have a "Google Alert" for anything on the web that mentions both Dalgleish and Avon Lake. This is the first time your question appeared. What was really strange is the link was to the Italian version of ancestry.com, so it took me a while to figure out how to find the forum on an english language site.

Muriel married Tom Allison. I didn't realize he was from Avon Lake. Tom and Muriel lived in Avon Lake, except for a brief move to Parma in the 70s, until Tom retired from BF Goodrich. They then moved to Hilton Head, SC along with quite a few other Avon Lake retirees.

My dad, Jim, was younger than Muriel. I do not know the difference in their ages, but he was born in 1939. James was also my grandfather's name.

I remember Dr. Turowski. He was still practicing while I was growing up. Dr. Arnold on Jaycox was our Dr. growing up. He delivered my mom and dad, three out of four of my brothers and sisters and me. Being such a small town, I also had many of the same teachers as my Mom and Dad.

A few years ago they had ancestry.com free for the weekend and I took advantage of it. I remember looking through old AL Press and either Lorain Journal or Elyia Chronicle archives and findings articles mentioning Muriel. They may have been about the group you both belonged to.

I forgot to mention that Muriel changed her name to Rachel (that may be the wrong spelling) later in life. It was my grandmother's name. She said she always disliked the name Muriel. I never did get used to calling her Rachel though.

I will be sure to pass your info on to my mom and dad. My email is my screen name above @gmail.com. Feel free to contact me outside of this forum.

Kind regards,

Kim

I am so sorry to hear about Muriel's passing. I so wanted to be able to link up with her. I grew up just a short distance to the west of where she lived, as a kid. She lived on Inwood Blvd., I lived at 33039 Lake Road, on the south side. I believe we also belonged to at least one organization there, but can't remember which one(s) at the minute. I also knew your father, but think he was older, and of course, couldn't be bothered with girls then. I also delivered the Lorain Journal to their house, so I got to meet their parents many times, but don't remember their names. As a child, Muriel and I played in empty houses that were being constructed across the street from where she lived. While playing upstairs, I accidently stepped through the unfinished floor of a closet. Didn't go very far, thanks to Muriel. Then, while outside, I stepped on a board with a nail. It went through my shoe, sock, and into my foot, between two of my toes. Her mother took me to Dr. Turowski, just a little ways to the east of their house, where he extracted the nail, and gave me my first tetnus shot. Thinking of Muriel sure brings back a lot of memories, mostly happy ones. Wish I could remember more, but I bet your Dad could enlighten you with more stories of us two gals. Hope to hear from anybody who can tell me more about Muriel, and the years after I graduated from ALHS (1952).

Whick Allison "boy" did she marry?

Patricia (Patsy Edwards) Maher

She has a daughter Julie Ann Tilden who lives in Cape Coral Florida and a son Rick Allison who resides in the Lorain County area. I will be glad to speak to you or put you in touch with my mom and dad who have more information.
My husband's gandfather was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Grand Lodge of Scotland on the 24th of July 1885. We have the sheepskin certificate with the seal of the Lodge. The ceremony took place at St.John, Selkirk and grandfather immigrated to America shortly afterward. He was Robert E.Dalgliesh,a wonderful woodworker. If there are any decendents still in the area we would love to hear from them.He married Sarah E. Van Duzer and had one daughter Isabelle. They visited St.John and other towns in 1913.Isabelle wrote about the trip and I have read it and she had the most wonderful time there. My husband went to Scotland while on leave during WW2 but did not know where to look for family.Isabelle was an only child and my husband, her son,was an only child so we really don't have anyone to ask about Grandfather.Isabelle and her husband, Charles T. Newton were killed in a train wreck in 1930 when my husband was 5 years old.My husband is Robert Dalgliesh Newton and so is our son.Sorry to go on so long.My family came from Aberdeen in 1767 so we are Scots through and through. Thanks to all who read this.Mickey Newton.Mickmail@earthlink.net

A Dalgleish mystery-can you help?

wondered if you knew anything about the Dalgleish parents of Elizabeth Dalgleish, born about 1781 possibly in Selkirkshire, Scotland. Elizabeth married Andrew Aitken in 1804 in Yarrow, Selkirk, Scotland. Any information would be very appreciated.

It is quite a mystery that was handed me by my ancestors. Here is the account in their own words:

iT MAY BE NOTED that this letter differs from the one written by Mrs. Born as to the lady who eloped. Mrs. Born has in that the Wilson girl eloped with Fletcher, while Matilda [Cummings] understands that it was the Fletecher girl that eloped with Dalgleish. It would not matter particularly to the present generation, however, since the line of descent is the same in both statements, and therefore the correctness of the story is proven more sure.

The other ancestor writes: The earliest ancestor we can trace from, was born as near as I can find, by approx reckoning, about 1650, and it is from her that we have received the little spoons with E.W. [Elizabeth Wilson?] on them. Her name, or more likely, her mother's, was Elizabeth Wilson. She was born of a high family in the lowlands of Scotland. In Selkirkshire, as near as we can ascertain. The family was wealthy and owned a large estate there, and in this place the girl grew to womanhood, and married a Mr. Fletcher, also wealthy, and they lived in Selkirkshire also. From this marriage there were two or three boys and only one daughter, and around her centers our attention.

All the advantages of a loving family and everything wealth could bestow, was lavished on this daughter. When old enough, she was sent to a young ladies' seminary, and when she graduated, came home to be Brought Out in society. At this time, she fell in love with the young steward of her father's estate. He was a fine looking, prepossessing young man, but at all her equal in birth, and of course her parents would never for a moment have listened to such a union, for they were expecting greater things for their daughter, and it was a great disgrace to marry beneath one's station in Scotland.

This young man was Dalgleish, and a short time after the daughter's return from school, they went quietly to Gretna Green and were married.

From that day she was disowned, and never again did she see her parents or brothers, for she had so disgraced her family by marrying below her station, no matter what character the young man might be. Later they came back and settled in Selkirkshire also, not a great way from her home and near to Melrose Abbey.

Three children were born to them, Elizabeth, (our great grandmother), Margaret, and John, the youngest. He was killed when young, by a deer on the estate where his father lived. This left only Elizabeth and Margaret.

Soon after this, Mr. Dalgleish died. But his wife lived many years after him, but never during all these years did she see any of her people, only after she died, a strange man came to the family and appeared strangely moved, and went away as quietly as he came.

He was her youngest brother, but that is the only time the children saw their uncle. Her family never relented.

Have you ever heard about this, or do you have any ideas on the name and birthplace of this Dalgleish young man?

He was killed when young, by a deer on the estate where his father lived. This left only Elizabeth and Margaret.

Soon after this, Mr. Dalgleish died. But his wife lived many years after him, but never during all these years did she see any of her people, only after she died, a strange man came to the family and appeared strangely moved, and went away as quietly as he came.

He was her youngest brother, but that is the only time the children saw their uncle. Her family never relented.

Have you ever heard about this, or do you have any ideas on the name and birthplace of this Dalgleish young man?
