No truth. The real "Dalton gang" and their siblings lived and died as Daltons. I have all their names. I doubt they ever saw Arkansas.

Our ancestor, George Henry Dalton was born in 1846 and passed in 1921. we are trying to find his parents, as he often says he was born in Virginia. We have no record of him from birth until 1871 when he married Mahalia Elizabeth Green in Texas. Family history says he went to sea with an older brother when he was only 9 years old. But from 1846 to 1871 nothing, except stories say he was in Missouri and Illinois but have never found him.

I have a little information on almost thirty Gerald Dalton's and the number of Gerald Dalton's in America since the beginning is likely over a hundred. (That's assuming he is from America.) Which one would you like information on? You need to give: (1) some rough dates; (2) a geographic location; (3) the names of some other relatives; (4) other information you have. If all you have is a name, then you're not likely to get any help in response to your inquiry.
GH Dalton was my great grandfather. He was born in Virginia in 1846, married Mahalia Elizabeth Green in 1871, Died in 1921, so he could not have been with anyone past that date, we have him in census from 1880 on. He lived and died near his kids, etc so from 1871 when he married we have it. He went to sea with an older brother at the age of 9, we dont know the name of any siblings or his parents. Only the father of Mahalia said he was from Canada. Any documented information from birth until 1871 is what we are looking for, perhaps seamanship records. or something. We have pictures and documentation from 1871 on. The going to sea story has been passed down in the family but not documented. He was in Illinois, and Missouri at some time according to family stories from birth till 1871, but we cant find him.

Lived with a son Grover in 1930 in Mills Co. Mahala Elizabeth Green lived in Falls County, Tx in 1879 and Mills County, Tx in 1930, age 76. One census has her parents born in Canada ?
You must do what you think is right, I am apologizing for disseminating false information, that's what I think is the right thing to do.

My error was in trusting some people who told me she married and had children, supposed descendants of the Dalton gang family. I believed them without checking for myself. I can't say there never was a child born to this family by that name -- the evidence is quite clear, however, that, if there was, she was never recorded with them on any census and the purported newspaper accounts of her were doctored as was the death certificate and Bible records showing that James and Adeline were Bea (Dalton) Phillips' parents. I would be open to any proof to the contrary and, if you don't mind sharing, I would like to see the evidence that she was born to that family and died young. (According to the census accounts of the family, she would have been the 4th child were she born 1856.)

William Calvin Dalton

Hi. I am looking for information on Willam Calvin Dalton who married Mary Etta Riner. Her daughter, Ruby, took Willam's last name when they married and three more children were born, Louise, Oma, and William, who was born and died in 1909 and is buried in Griffithville, Arkansas. I found this Dalton family in the 1940 census living in Duncan, Arkansas near Holly Grove. One of their children,Louise, is listed as still living in the household with the married name of Johnson. Her child also lives in the household.
I am trying to find out when William, Sr.,died and where he is buried. I suspect that he was originally married in 1891 Georgia to Notie Monroe Chadwick and was the father of Eber Dolton, my great grandfather. He left this family and went back to his home state of Kentucky and then to Arkansas, where he married Mary Etta Riner in 1906. I would love to be able to prove or disprove the connection between this William Calvin Dalton and Eber Dolton. (It is said that the spelling of the last name changed from Dalton to Dolton with Eber because he did not like to be associated with his ancestors, the Dalton Gang.)
Eber's mother,Notie, is listed as being widowed on the 1900 census which would mean that Eber's father died and could not have later married Ms. Riner. But some family members told me that he did not die, that he did later marry Ms. Riner, and that he started a new family with her in Arkansas. If any of you have any information to help solve this mystery, I would love to hear from you. Thank you, Suzanne
Scott, you'll have much better results if you post separate messages on the Essex (DALTON and WHITE) and Ayrshire boards (ROBERTSON). Be sure to include first names and dates for your ancestors. Provide a summary of the information you have and be specific about what information you're seeking.

Good luck!

She had a daughter named Grace and all 3 lived together in New York. What I dont know : Who was Anna married to and who was the father of Grace. Checked the NYC birth records and they have no record of Grace's birth in 1894 so I cant find her father.

James Samuel Dalton (1895-1937?)

I wrote a query some years ago about this same subject, but thought I'd give it another try. Maybe some fresh eyes could find something I can't. Please excuse the length of this inquiry as I'm going to attempt to list what I know so no one wastes their time duplicating my efforts.

I'm working on the line that includes my great grandfather, James Samuel DALTON. Per the 1920 and 1930 censuses, he was born in 1895. Per a World War I Draft Registration Card that I believe is his, his exact date of birth is March 16, 1895.

The location of his birth is reported as different places, depending on what document you look at. The 1920 census (where he is showing up as Samul J DALTON) states he was born in Missouri and his parents were born in the United States. The 1930 census (where he is showing up as James S DALTON) states he was born in Virginia, and his mom and dad were both born in Kentucky. The WWI Draft Registration states he was born in Nashville, Tennessee. I know for certain that the 1920 and 1930 censuses are for "my" James. I'm not positive about the WWI Draft Registration.

Let me explain. I have an original marriage license for James and his wife. She was Mary Louise ORNDOFF (born 11/30/1891 in Kansas). She first married someone with the last name of GRABEAL around 1911. I haven't been able to figure out the first name of who she married, or what happened to end the marriage. At any rate, the marriage license shows James S. DALTON marrying Louisa GRABEAL. She must have been using her middle name, which is a very common practice (even to this day) in my family line. James signed the certificate, and the signature looks very very similar to the signature on the WWI document. Which makes me think it's him. I've asked others if they belive the signatures are from the same person, and everyone has said yes. Of course this proves nothing for certain.

Finally, based on all of the aforementioned info, I believe I have found his death certificate. It is for a James DALTON, born March 16, 1895, died May 19, 1937 at the age of 42. The story in the family is that he died when his daughter (and my grandmother) Virginia Eunice DALTON was about 13 years old. Virginia was 15 in 1937. The wife on the death certificate is listed as Mary. It states he lived in the Chicago area for 12 years, which fits with everything. It says his father is Daniel DALTON (born Kentucky) and mother is Virginia WILLIAMS (birthplace unknown). The fact that the mother is named Virginia fits with everything, as my grandmother was named Virginia Eunice DALTON. Eunice is the name of Mary's mother, so it's not a stretch to infer that my grandma was given the first name of James's mother (another common practice in the family). The birth place of James is listed in this document as Hillbill, West Virginia. There is no such place as Hillbill, West Virginia. The informant is listed as "hospital records."

The WWI Draft Registration Card from June 5, 1917, states he was living in Pleasant Valley, Scott County, Iowa, working as a farm laborer for Arthur Schlosser. The 1920 census has him and his wife (they technically weren't married in January when the census was enumerated) as living at 1811 Montgall Avenue in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. The marriage license, from February 20, 1920, shows them living at 1636 Washington Avenue in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. The 1930 census shows them as living at 517 Aberdeen, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. And finally the death certificate shows his residence as 1421 W. Monroe Street in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

I should mention that they didn't move from Kansas City to Chicago until sometime after October 9, 1922, as their daughter, Virginia, was born in Kansas City, Missouri.

I should also mention that there was a Frank Dalton listed on the 1930 census as living with James and his family, and it showed his relationship as being James's brother. His birth date was around 1891, he was single, and listed his occupation as police officer. I thought maybe I could find out more about this line through Frank, but have hit a dead end with him also.

I'm trying to confirm anything in this jumble of information I have, and also to see if I can go any further back in the line.

Thanks to anyone who made it through to the end of this, and for any help you can provide me.

Cheryl Gore Odette

Robert J. Dalton, Jefferson Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

His father was the John Dalton subject of another post today.

On the 1880 census, he is found in Jefferson Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He is a miner, 32 years old, or born in 1848, in Ireland - as were both of his parents. He has been unemployed for 7 months in that census year. The other family members are his wife, "Winnyfred" (Winifred), age 26, or born in 1854, in Wales -- as were both of her parents. The children are John, 9, born in Wales, James, 7, born in Pennsylvania, Peter, 6, born in Pennsylvania, Mary, 5, born in Pennsylvania, Susan, 3, born in Pennsylvania, and Robert, 1, born in Pennsylvania. Missing from this family are Peter and Mary who were born in Wales, ca 1851 and 1860 respectively.

On the 1900 census (Cleveland, OH) it states that she has had 10 children and only 5 are listed on that census.

In later records Peter and Susan vanish after the 1880 census. Death, marriage, moved?

Robert (F.) apparently married but I can't fine a wife.

Who were the other 5 children that apparently died pre. 1900?

Could anyone suggest sources (they were Catholic so where might I get parish records?)or have any information on this?

John Dalton, Fayette County, PA

On the 1880 census for Upper Tyrone Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, there is a family of a John Dalton, his wife Susan, and a son Peter. John is listed as being 60 (1820), born in Ireland and a laborer. His wife is listed as 61 (1819), born in Ireland. Peter is listed as 30 (1850), born in Ireland. Peter is listed as a "RuEnginer".

From another source Peter is Peter M., b. Nov. 1850, Duncormick?, County Wexford,Ireland. Birth records in Wales show that there was a son John, b. 22 Aug. 1860 in Wales. Another son was Robert J. b. Jan. 1847, Dublin, Ireland.

Robert J. is found on the 1880 census in another county in PA. Where is John? He just vanishes.

John Sr. and Susannah/Susan don't show up on the 1900 census so did they die or move?

Can anyone provide information or sources in the county? They are Catholic so how about a parish to contact for records?

My great grandma Peach, aka Audie Delma Sutton-Peach, married George Michael Peach and had 8 children. Their daughter, Nellie Bernice Peach-Richardson,is my grandmother. Sadly she passed on October 6, 2011 but she was excited she would see her favorite sister Aunt Teenie, aka Mary Peach-Hyde. Great grandma Peach's mom's name is Molly (Mollie) Dalton and,I was told by my great Aunt, her husband is Phil Sutton. They had four daughters and one son. Phil's parents are David Sutton and a woman named Ravin from New Orleans. We don't know her last name. David Sutton's parents immigrated from Ireland and settled in the Mississippi Valley where they owned a plantation. They had one son, David, and two daughters (don't know names). I don't know their names we only know him by General Sutton. Let me know if this helps. Also, if you have any other information please share it with me. My email address is jgeorge009@comcast.net. Thank you. Carla Guevara-George

Molly Dalton relative to the Dalton Boys (Gang)

My grandmother just past and gave me detailed information about some of my history. I discovered my great great grandparents were Phil Sutton and Molly Dalton. Our family was not allowed to discuss the relatives of Great Grandma Molly because of the impact it had on her four daughters marriages. She also had a son whom I do not know the name of yet. If anyone knows anything about Molly Dalton and her family, please share. Thank you...Carla

Thank you Bill, for starting this post. I had never gone to this site before. Thank you again for the Headstone picture.
It was a great surprise.
Ken, in all the census Robert Dalton's parents were listed as born in Ireland???
I have Roberts middle name as Jay, from a his daughter, Catherine or Dora's family. Sarah C Cantrell was married to Nelson Beebe before she married Robert. After his death, she married Hamilton Hancox. That is where I am at right now. I have alot of the Cantrell information online and also in a book "The Cantrill-Cantrell Genealogy." Any help with Robert's parents I would greatly appreciate. Thank you, Sue
