Hi,

Thanks so much for responding. I love all your pictures that you’ve posted. I have so many pictures that I’m still trying to verify the people in them. It’s a slow process but fun.
I see on your tree that you have Mary Sellers listed as the wife of Samuel L. Daly Sr. I know from researching that there has been lots of discussions about whether Mary Sellers or Sallie/Sarah Ann Hargrove is the mother of the five Daly children. Some researchers suggest that Mary is the birth mother and Sallie is the step-mother while others think that Sallie/Sarah is the birth mother.
Looking through my records I do see in the Daly Marriages in Giles County the following:

Samuel Daily to Sarah A. Hargrove 22 April 1852

Samuel Daily to Mary E. Sellers 20 July 1852

I do know that Sallie is buried in the Daly Family Cemetery. I do not know where Mary is buried.

My connection to Samuel Daly is through Sallie/Sarah A. Hargrove.

Samuel died in 1862 and Sallie remarried William N. “Dock” Lewis in 1869 and had 3 children with “Dock”. My g-grandfather, James H. Lewis was one of those children. When my g-grandparents passed away my grandmother was sent to live with her cousin, Guy B. Daly. Last year I met a daughter of Guy’s and heard wonderful stories about my grandmother ,and about my grandfather and his parents(my g-grandparents) as they were neighbors of Guy Daly’s and my grandfather was life-long friends with Guy’s sons, Neal and Paul.

I would love to have a DNA comparison done to see if anyone is interested please let me know. At least then we’d all know for sure if Sallie or Mary was the birth mother.

I would also love more information on Samuel’s children: Lucy, William, John, Samuel Jr., and Larken. Did anyone keep a journal?

Thanks to all for your input. I think I am going to try to find records of tenants/bailiffs/workers on the Clanricarde estate - and go that route. As I said in an earlier posting, Charles had a colourful life in Africa - surviving a well recorded shipwreck (the Birkenhead), moving on to being an uber-successful businessman who had the ear of presidents, to losing his wife in a concentration camp during the Anglo Boer
war. I'll persevere to fit him into his family!!Rgds Flick

Re: Charles Daly, John Daly, James Daily/Daly, William Daily

Precious little. We are descended from James Daily/Daly who listed his parents as John Daly and Mary Fallon and his birthplace as County Galway, Ireland, in an autobiography that appeared in an 1888 history of Mercer County, Missouri. He was born ca. 1837-1843.

I have since been in contact with a relative in Iowa who is descended from a brother named William Daily, with whom James came to the USA in 1851. I think perhaps a third brother came with them but cannot recall the first name.

They went first to Ohio where they stayed about a year. Perhaps they had relatives or friends from County Galway who had settled there and help them earn money to buy land of their own.

Then they went on to Iowa, got farms of their own and farmed near the Missouri border area of Iowa and across the stateline in Missouri.

James Daly served as a Lieutenant in the Missouri Militia Cavalry, which was federalized during the Civil War. He lost an eye in battle.

In the 1880s and 1890s he owned the Princeton Hotel in Princeton, the county seat of Mercer County, Missouri, in north central Missouri near the Iowa state line.

Around the turn of the century, he and his wife, Mary Frances Reilly, retired and moved to Chicago where a few of their children had settled and were doing well. He died in Chicago in 1917.

This branch of the family was associated with Chicago Title and Trust Company.

Hi there, yes, it's me, Robert, the son of Bob and Mary. Hope all is well. Well, I have started to do some research and found that my great-grandfather was born in New Orleans, not my grandfather Bart. I stated a family tree under the name of John Daly. Did you know that Veronica Daly (Florence"s sister) married a man who's last name was Daly also?

I am just getting stated and so happy you contacted me. Please stay in touch. I will give you my number but not sure I want to post it in here.

Also, I am wondering if Bernard Daly might have been in the civil war ? I am checking militery records. It seems strange that his son John was born in 1862 in New Orleans as that makes it at the early beginning of the civil war on the southern side.

OK, that's all for now. Robert.

Hi, Robert! I believe I'm your cousin Maureen, granddaughter of Florence Daly Sherry. They've got us all going with that New Orleans story. I heard that "your grandfather came from New Orleans." There may be some truth to someone in New Orleans further back, but I haven't found it. Anyway, I've managed to dig up a few more facts that I'm happy to share. Please get in touch.
My grandfather George Daly born in Atlantic City about 1885, lived in Philadelphia and Camden NJ at one point in early 20th century. Married Katherine Sheridan. Middle name might have been Thomas. Family history is he abandoned his wife and children sometime in the 1920's.

George's father currently unknown, may possibly have been Patrick Daly, born in Ireland, may have been from County Cork, may have been married to Anna (maiden name unknown), and died in 1916 in Jersey City, NJ. Family oral-history was he was well-to-do and was murdered during a robbery.

Trying to document more of Daly lineage, if anything looks familiar please reply.

I think it would be fabulous if you wrote up these chronicles before they are totally lost or end up in the hands of someone who just puts them on a dusty shelf. They could provide meat for all of us Daly descendants who are having trouble getting back more than a few generations. As an anthropologist, I see some potential for such a family chronicle as grist for folklore and oral history, as it deals with people whose lives are rarely recorded in formal histories or biographies. I'm very hopeful, too, about the potential for such a chronicle being the basis for DNA research. Have you thought of contacting a publisher or going the self-publishing route, so much easier today than formerly? It would be great if someone like you who has access to this source would contact the Ancestry staff to get some advice --- their card catalog has many resources which focus on a single family's history, and that way anyone can examine the source themselves, now or far into the future, hopefully.

Hi Ann,

thanks for responding-these two towns indeed are not one and the same. Milltown County Galway is about 10 miles north of Tuam. Milltown Malbay is on the coast, south in County Clare.

i was stumped on that for a bit as well, as i had found Daly's in Milltown Malbay, but they were not the Daly's i was looking for. I finally found the correct Milltown by narrowing it down by the church the family attended.

Steve

Hi Steve,
My Grandfather came from Milltown Malbay in county Clare. I don't know if it's the same as Milltown county Galway. His name was John Daly and I believe he was born around 1880. I will check that out be be sure. He may have been older than my Grandmother.
