John Danby - Yorkshire, England to York County, Ontario

I am trying to find the English origins of John Danby, who family history has came from Yorkshire, and settled in York County, Upper Canada where he married Janet Brack on January 22, 1838 in Toronto. I am a descendant of their daughter Jane Danby who married William Jackson.

Searching the LDS records, I have found a record for a John Danby, christened October 9, 1808 in Preston By Hedon, Yorkshire, which seems a strong chronological match. His parents were Mark and Elizabeth Danby, and John would name his first born son Mark, further suggesting the match.

More searches yield a marriage for his parents. Mark Danby married Elizabeth Routledge in Preston By Hedon on June 10, 1805. John also appears to have had an older brother James, christened on January 25, 1807 in Preston By Hedon.

I have been trying to find more sources on this family, but have been unsuccessful. There is a burial of a Mark Danby on September 5, 1812 in Ottringham, Yorkshire, eight miles from Preston By Hedon, and the microfilmed record will be consulted to see if it gives more information. Otherwise, the family seems to disappear from the records.

Has anyone researching the Danbys in Ontario or in Yorkshire researched this family? Has anyone found anything to further confirm, or eliminate this connection?

I am happy to help you with your research. However, I am just embarking on a cruise and won't be home until mid May. Some of the information is not for public view, if you would like to provide a disposable email address I can retrieve the notes from my archives and pass the information to you on my return. If you are happy and comfortable with that just let me know through Ancestry or whatever arrangement you would prefer.
Hi again,
Since replying to your message I have discovered a myriad of information (actually, I should say 'have stumbled upon' said information, as it appears that others have done that hard work already - possibly you?) I am tracing information re: Lillian Leonora Danby (Fasnacht) and was wondering if you have any idea of her 'real' origins. Her mother was Minnie Leonora Williams (aka Moran, aka Bell, aka Danby, aka Fasnacht) and she was lead to believe that her father was Arthur Alfred Fasnacht. Do you have any stories regarding this? Any information would be greatfully received.
Hi, nice to hear from you. Yes, I have connections with the family, but it will depend on which rumour you are following as to whether I can help or not. I have the quite complicated family tree back quite a long way, many aka's were used. They appear in the old "The Stage" newspapers.

Hi,
I am looking for information regarding a family 'rumour' about the Danby-Fasnacht troupe of entertainers. I have found Arthur A Danby and Charles F Danby in the 1911 UK census records as a 'visitors' in Wiltshire with their profession listed as 'comedian'. Just wondering if these guys have anything to do with your research? Thanks!
Yes this fits the same information I have. I think ur Henry Slack who married Sophia DeWitte is the brother of Samuel Slack who married Hester Wright and this is my line. This is the line that settled on Charleston Lake in Leeds & Grenveille here in Canada.

Samuel Slack Jr. was my husband's ancestor, lived in Lee county Iowa from about 1849 to about 1852, then Decatur county Iowa from about 1852 to early 1873. He arrived in Reno county Kansas about April 3, 1873 and remained in Kansas, except for occasional visits to Canada and California, until his death in 1909. There wasn't any mention of a visit from Henry Slack, but he didn't make many journal notes until a little later on.

I am a descendant of Henry Slack & Sophia DeWitte of Perth, Ontario who stayed with a Samuel Slack in Iowa about 1849. Henry left Sophia with Samuel's family while he went to California looking for gold, and she soon went back to Perth until he got home 4 years later. Henry had a cousin, Samuel Slack, Jr. who was born in Ontario and died in Kansas - believe that was the Samuel they stayed with in Iowa. Does this fit your information? I am sure they are the same family, just not whether this is the right Samuel.

Francis Jr. was Francis Sr.'s oldest son. I am a direct descendent of his second son, James Francis. My research has indicated that Francis Jr. went to New Zealand or Australia. The breakup between Francis Sr. and his wife seemed to split the family. You are no doubt connected.
My research has shown that Francis Jr. went to New Zealand or Australia. I would have to look at my archives to see if date of birth or death matches my records but it looks close. My direct ancestor was Francis Sr.'s second son, James Francis, DOB 1816 I believe. I always assumed that split up between Francis Sr. and his wife in 1829? split the family as well.
I believe I am descended from the famous artist Francis Danby. My forebear was Francis Danby circa 1814 - 1883 who was a sculptor who had emigrated from England. His death certificate shows his father as Francis Danby Artist and mother's name unknown to the informant. To prove the connection, I am looking for a birth certificate or at least a death certificate showing Francis Jnr.as a listed child. I would be grateful for any assistance.

Hi Corrina,

Need to update my previous reply. sorry I gave you the wrong name.
I am Janine Ryman, daughter of Beryl & Don Ryman, so we are related, and I can probably clear up why you can find no information regarding my mother.

During a visit to England in 1996 I found my mothers sisters who told me that my mum's name was actually Bertha Danby, and when she married my dad, she was already married to someone called Danny Danby. They had married when my mum was 17 and had a child called Valerie who died at 3 months from gastroenteritis. The marraige broke down, but my mother never divorced Danny.

All my life I was told that my maternal grandfather, who I never met was called Austin Danby. Apparently not. His name was Austin Harris. My Nana Bertha and he divorced and she remarried some years later to Stephen Potter.

Hope this helps.

I would love to see the family history you have uncovered.
To update the information ....

It looks like Beryl was born Beryl Austin in 1919, Walse to Grace F Austin. Grace married Willaim A Danby b 1893 Hong Kong in 1921. They had 2 (more) children Evelyn (1923)and William (1921) in Portsmouth, UK. Grace died in 1925 leaving 3 young children. William Senior died in 1977 after marrying again in Horsham 1928!

If any one has any info that links to this it would be great

This is very hit and miss as I know it was posted 3 years ago but ... I am searching for a family of Danby's ... Beryl Austina Danby was born around 1920 and her father was called Austin Danby he was a seaman on her wedding certificate. She married a Donald Ryman (my great uncle) in 1942 and in around 1963 they moved to Australia with their daughter Janine.
My family have been in contact with Janine but she has been unable to find ANY info on her mother or the family. I cant even find a birth registration! if there could be a link it would be great to hear from you

Corrina

Joseph Danby and Sarah Wiltse just happen to be my Great Geat Grandparents. My mother was Florence Ethel Danby, the daughter of Edward Adelbert Danby and Sarah Jane Gamble of Lyndhurst. Perhaps we may have some interesting information for each other. I just happen to live down the road in Brockville.
Beryl Austina Danby Daughter of Austin Danby???

Im am looking for information on Beryl Austina Danby. I believe she would have been born around 1920 In the liverpool area (although this is just through hearsay), as her husband Donald Ryman Was born 1920 in Horsham West Sussex and their daughter Janine was Born in 1950 in "Border" Cumberland.
I can find no details of her birth, the only one similar is far to young.
I have their Marriage certificate but the only detail it gives me is her fathers name - Austin Danby. He was a seaman but that is all I have and can find no other information about him.
Donald, Beryl and Janine moved to Australia in the 1960s, Don and Beryl died a few years back and Janine was never given any information about either side of the family.

Is any one out there related to this Danby family? Does any one know any thing about them? I dont even know Beryl's mothers name!
If you can help please contact me.

Corrina

I hope you are still at this e-mail address. I am working on a Slack genealogy effort and am making this inquiry to see what additional information I can find.

Am interested in learning more about the descendants of George Danby, who was married to Erie / Eruie Slack about the 19th of January 1853. The family went from Ontario (Leeds) to Ohio, and then some of the children went on to Kansas. The known children of George & Erie (Slack) Danby were Amulet, Monarah, Hester, Samuel, William J, Clyena, Ross Charles, and Dexter.
Ross Charles & Dexter Danby were born in Ohio, but the others were all born in Canada. The census data I've seen indicates the family came to America around 1866. I have no data as yet on the daughters or their husbands - no death dates, residence locations, or husband names.

My husband is a descendant of Samuel Slack Jr. and Louisa Reed. Samuel's sister was the Erie / Eruie Slack married to George Danby.

Arthur and Martha were my biological great grandparents. Their daughter, Jeanette, was my grandmother. She married Martin Guy Stone. Their oldest child, Margaret Elizabeth Stone was my mother. I was adopted as an infant, but I did meet Jen several times and gathered some family info. Arthur, Martha, Jen and Guy are all buried in cemetary right off Rte 476 in Broomall, PA. There are other markers with Danby names. I also understand Arthur went back and forth to England four times I believe and wrote a journal or diary of his travels. Family lore has it that he distributed copies to several family members...I just have not been able to catch up to a copy yet! Would be pleased to share info I have with anyone interested or hear from any relatives.

Mary Ann Bandel, Email: mabandel@aol.com
Hello Arthur

I was delighted to read your post re the above.
I sent you an e-mail direct, but obviously it didn't get through to you.
Arthur Robert Danby's mother was Mary Blench, elder sister of my great grandfather
William Blench. Arthur's parents were also witnesses at my great
grandparents' wedding (William Blench and Annie Elizabeth Clark,
29/12/1881, Stokesley, England).

Obviously my interest is primarily in the Blench family, but as a Blench
married a Danby, this is how my interest expanded to include the Danbys.

I have quite a lot on the Danbys, but there are lots of gaps, and I hope you will be able to fill a few
of them for me.

The Danbys lived in Yarm, North Yorkshire. I understand that of William
Danby's 10 children 4 emigrated to the US, with the other 6 remaining in
North Yorkshire.

I also have information on the Blench family going back to the 1700s where
the earliest reference I can find is that they originate from Kiplin, a
small hamlet near Catterick in North Yorkshire. I can forward this on to
you if you wish.

I would be most grateful for as many specific (or even approximate!)
details as you have for any of your (and my!) relatives, especially dates
and places of birth, marriage and death.

Needless to say, any details about living relatives will remain strictly
confidential.

Your help really would be very much appreciated.

Malcolm Corbett
Halifax, England

malcolm.corbett@blueyonder.co.uk

Arthur Robert Danby and Martha Alice Westgarth were my grandparents. They arrived in the United States with four children. My father, Arthur Westgarth Danby, was the fifth child of nine. He was the first born in the United States on the 17th of August 1915 in Pennsylvania. The only sibling of Arthur Robert Danby and Martha Alice Westgarth that I knew of (but was to young to remenber details) was Thomas Danby who I think owned a farm in the country side outside Philidelphia. Two of Arthur Robert Danby and Martha Alice Westgarth's children survive, my uncle Steve Danby and my aunt Martha Danby. They reside in Pennsylvania.

Anyone seeking information on my grandparents may contact me and I will attempt to locate more acceptable documentation other than my knowledge and recollection.

Arthur Westgarth Danby, Jr

Hi, I am hoping to find info on a Dinah Danby who married a James Buckner on 5-22-1822 in Edwards County, Illinois. She passed away before April 1828 because that is when James remarried. I sure would appreciate some help, I have not been able to locate any parents, age or whereabouts, nothing just a marriage date. Would it be possible her Danby family would have come out of Canada? Just speculating.
Thanks.

Arthur Robert Danby marrying Martha Alice Westgarth

By pure chance I came across Arthur Robert Danby marrying Martha Alice Westgarth March 1/4 1907 Stockton Co. Durham England. He was born March 1/4 1885 Stokesley North Riding Yorkshire and she was born June 1/4 1885 Lanchester Co. Durham. Found this whilst researching my unrelated DANBY ancestors.
You probably know all this by now anyway!

Re: Danby Family of Nottingham

John Danby, born 1895 was my grandfather. Bertha Soar and Joseph Danby were witnesses at his marriage to my Granma Floence Bradshaw in 1915. I have only just started researching the Danby line. Any information would be most welcome.
Sheila
