Regarding the origin of the Daingerfield spelling variant:

The Daingerfield variant begins to appear in the latter half of the16th century. Two marriage, Henry/Thornbury/1564, Foulk/1581/Naunton, and two wills, Richard/1586/Berkeley, and Bryce/1598/Woodchester, constitute the first evidence of adult male "Daingerfields". The will of Ric/1601 is the first evidence of the surname in Kings Stanley, which was to become the focus for this particular variant. Looking in detail at Kings Stanley we find one family in the midst of what is clearly an "identity crisis". A William Daungerfield/Chr/1597 appears in the parish register with Anncell Daungerfield as his father. "Anncell" appears as a father in the Kings Stanley register variously as "Ansell Dangerfyeld"/1599/1600, Ancelme Daingerfield/160/1603, Ancell Dangerfielde/1605, Ancell Dangerfield/1607, probably Avuerll Dangerfield/1611 and finally Ancell Dangerfield/1616. In total this individual appears in the register with five distinct spelling of his surname. In 1604 William Daingerfield is christened and his father is Ric Daingerfield. A will for a Richard Daingerfield of Kings Stanley is to be found in the Gloucestershire County records office for 1605

One of Ancell's children Toby Dangerfield(b1603) married as Dangerfield 1636, and would Christen two daughters in 1636 under the surname Dangerfield. His last two children would be Christened as Daingerfield in 1641 and 1643

A Gyles Daingerfield fathers Elizabeth Daingerfield/Kings Stanley/1644 but he was probably born Gyles Dangerfeild/Kings Stanley/1624, father Richard Dangerfeild

A Danyell Dangerfyeld is born/1610/Kings Stanley, Father Thomas Dangerfyeld, and would in turn father Thomas Daingerfield/Kings Stanley/1637 as Daniel Daingerfield.

One of course is left to wonder if this alphabet soup of spellings is merely an issue of transcription peculiar to the Kings Stanley area. However a similar pattern is also evident in Leonard Stanley. Supporting the possibility of the Daingerfield variant being a conscious choice can be seen when a family migrated to Throkmorton Worcestershire and carried the Daingerfield variant with them. Finally in the New World the early Virginian's were consistently known as Daingerfield..

In all likely hood the spelling may have been the result of dialect and an attempt to express the vowel sound Danger or Dainger. This pronunciation probably replaced the harder Daunger sound which had been more common in the 14th to 16th century. It has been suggested that it might also involve a lack of familiarity with an unknown surname in the Stroudwater region. .

I looked for Marshal Dangerfield, can't find a connection.A hint to share, and may help re to Marshal Dangerfield, alas Holiday, but if not it may it serve as a lesson to adopted names, misspelled names. I have someone on my tree married to a wife named Holloway. If he wanted to assume another name , it would easy to use a variation of his wife's name... to Holiday since it is easier to remember and live with. Try GrGrgrandfather Holloway

Hmm, are you sure about the wife of the elder Edward L. Daingerfield (1805-1861), brother of John Bathurst D. (1815-1886)? I have E. L.'s wife as Margaret Boyd Vowell (1811-1887), m. 1831, daughter of John Cripps Vowell and Mary Jacquelin Smith, not Margaret Vowell Smith.

Are you referring to John B. Daingerfield who married Rebecca Holmes Fowle? If so, my information is that he is the son of Bathurst Daingerfield (surprise!) and Elizabeth Lonsdale Kay. Bathurst D. is in turn the son of William Daingerfield and Sarah Taliaferro of Spotsylvania Co. VA (my GGGG parents). I have quite a bit of material on my ancestry.com tree. If you would like, send me your email address and i will "invite" you to see what I have. It's a public tree, but you need an "invitation" to view the notes, which is where the interesting details are!
Alexander Daingerfield

This information about the third child and second son of John Bathurst Daingerfield and Rebecca Holmes Fowle Grew(1st husband) is not correct. Their son was Edward Lonsdale Daingerfield born 1847 and died 1925. He married Sarah Vowell Smith and they had three children Sarah Vowell Daingerfield Stirling, Francis Lee Daingerfield and Mary Helen Daingerfield. They left no descendants. Some confusion does exist because the brother of John B Daingerfield was Edward L Daingerfield married Margaret Vowell Smith(aunt of Sarah V. Smith. Those seeking information on these Daingerfields should track down copy of Sarah Stirling's book "A Virginia Plantagenet"

While the surname is certainly Norman it's origin isn't Angiers.

The surname evolved in Gloucestershire from de Angervil to Daungervil to Daungerfild to Dangerfield.

I would assume that de Angervil would indicate the surname was "from" Angervil
Fascinating. I have just researched the Mealtub plot and Thomas Dangerfield and what a charming character he was not! In light of the tense and charged atmosphere at the time I can certainly understand a change in name. My research leads back to a Daniel Dashfield born @1680 so this would fit with the time. I will see if it is possible to examine the parish register in order to ascertain if he was christened Dashfield. If so it would have been before the Mealtub plot. I wonder if the Civil War played it's part in the change in name in some way? It had not long been over and feelings would still be felt and remembered. I will carry out some research and get back to you if I may? Kind regards Debbie Blackburn, England

Hello Fandano80:

Thank you for replying to my post and particularly for bringing the dialect site to my attention.

The dialect explanation is certainly one that has to be considered more so in light of the Black Country site...

Another possibility might be an inheritance situation. Many people changed names as a condition of inheritance. There is no evidence that would suggest this was the case.

Another possibility would be a double switch, from Dangerfield to Dashfield to Dangerfield. A possible reason might have been the embarrassment resulting from the Mealtub plot of the 1680's. One Thomas Dangerfield was accused of treason as the result of efforts to discredit the Monarchy. The fallout reverberated well into the 19th century with parliamentary enquiries. Because of the unusual nature of the Dangerfield name it is possible the Darlaston families used Dashfield as a means of avoiding the fallout. If this was true the change was only for a couple of generations. The Dashfield and Dangerfield name co-existed in the Mathon Wor. region in the early 1600's. Both families were fairly well to do and were large property owners. They would probably be aware of each others surnames. Again no direct evidence, only speculation.

Hello Howard, I am researching my friend's family tree and find as you say that her Dangerfield ancestors originated @ 1700 as Dashfields. We live about 20/30 miles away and I can confirm that there is a strong dialect in the area though possibly not as strong anymore due to the multicultural effect on dialect. Darlaston was in an area known as the Black Country and I would like to draw your attention to a website that may well give you some idea of what I mean by strong dialect!!! It is a very nasal pronunciation too - http://www.sedgleymanor.com/dictionaries/dialect.html Many of the sayings are still in our local speech and I use them still myself. I can imagine the name Dangerfield being corrupted to Dashfield and then reversed, it is a very strong dialect indeed. Hope this helps but would be very interested to hear your thoughts after you have had chance to look at the websites aforementioned. Kind Regards Debbie Blackburn, England

James Kay Dangerfield - evidence concering the origin of the name

A death notice was recovered from the Toronto Globe and Mail Feburary 17,1921.
It reports the death of one James Kay Dangerfield aged 87. Evidently his father (Thomas), and mother met in passage from England in 1834. They were married shortly after arriving in Canada.
The father of James Kay Dangerfield according to the author of the death notice, was a native of Gloucestershire.
Interestingly the notice claims his family "were registered in one parish church for more than 500 years where they were engaged in the manufacture of broad cloth".
The notice and further comments can be viewed at:

http://www.members.shaw.ca/sdangerfield/do%20not%20search%20...
