I have gotten as far back as 1822 with Tiny's grandfather Egbert B. Darby. If you have any more info, please contact me.
We called Tiny 'Aunt Tiny" she had a bone desease and 2 of her children were Dorothy "Aunt Dot" and Joyce. Mr. Smith was a preacher in Ga. Don't know where the "Johnny" came from.

Bob, thanks for getting in touch. This seems like valuable information, so I might to the address you have given to see what I can find out. I suspect that this is a 'different' Darby family from the one I am researching though, one descended from George and Mary Darby who came in 1849 from Somerset(?). Is that right?

- Tim

Hi Margaret,

Let me tell you what I know about that bible.

The old bible that I have originally belonged to a man named William Mallin of West Bromwich, who lived from 1772 to 1855. One of William's children was William Henry, who married Hannah Abell in 1833 in Dudley. One of their children was Sarah Mallin, who married John Brayden in All Saints Church in West Bromwich in 1854. Their eldest child was William Henry Braden, who emigrated to the US in the late 1870s. This William Henry was my great-great grandfather. My guess is that the bible went to John and Sarah Brayden at some point, thus changing families, and then went to the US after they died.

One of William Henry Braden's sons, Arthur, did a bit of family history research, and it was he who left notes on the Braden family in the Mallin bible. But I am quite sure that he got a bit of it wrong, and this is where things get complicated. Here is the little that Arthur wrote of his own Braden ancestry:

1) John Braden (brigade major at battle of Waterloo, June 1815)
2) John Braden (b 11-20-1834, killed in mine)
3) William Henry Braden (b 5-16-1855)
4) Arthur Braden

Now, the Tipton parish registers say that John Braden (#2) was baptised on 11-20-1833, so he could not have been born in 1834. Those same registers name John's parents as William and Mary Ann Braden, and state that William's occupation was "miner". I really doubt that this man was present at Waterloo, let alone as an officer (there was one Jacob Braden in the battle, but he was in a German troop, and a private). I hate to disagree with me own great-grandfather, who was closer in time to the people and events than I am, but....

Now if Arthur got some of his ancestry wrong, what are we to make of the statement that one of his ancestors had been killed in a mine? That doesn't seem like an embellishment to me (in contrast to participation at Waterloo), so I take it as truthful, but applied to the wrong man. Since Arthur's great grandfather was indeed a miner, and because that miner's wife remarried in 1838, it seems likely that William Braden was killed in a mine. But I have not been able to find any confirmation of this event-- no burial record for him in any CofE church register, nor any newspaper report of a Tipton-area mining accident that named him as a victim.

I doubt that the Bradens were CofE, though. Being poor, they were probably Methodists. Still, my understanding is that in the 1830 the Anglican church was still recording the baptisms, marriages, and burials for other denominations, except for the Quakers and Jews. It was only later that the other churches started to keep their own records.

I will contact you soon at your other email address with more info, but I look forward to learning what you know of the Braden family!

Dale

I had thought that there must have been one but never could find out anything about it. I did not know therefore about William being killed in a mine.
I just now discovered this thread. I am a descendant of Mary Ann Taylor and William Braiden (from their son, John), and have been trying for years to find out exactly what happened to William. An old family bible that I have says simply that he was "killed in a mine", but I have not been able to find any burial record for him, nor any report of a mining accident from the Tipton area in the late 1830s that names him as a victim. I would like to exchange information with you.

cheers,
Dale Braden

Rick,

Thanks for your offer of help (and Happy New Year!)

I am interested in the Darby line descended from brothers Thomas and John Darby who came to SA in 1839, married on the same day in 1848 and settled there.

I am especially interested in John Darby (b. 1815 in Hertford) who married a Mary Leonard and had a child (not registered) George Leonard Darby b1850 and his descendents. John fades from the records about 1855 and I'd really like to know what happened to him.

If you pass me your email address I can send you my database of all All Darby BDM events from the BDM records.

- Tim Hill

I looking to get more information on a George Darby who married Elizabeth AYLOTT in Hertford in 1800. Some of his children came to South Australia about 1840.

There is a family story that they were descendants of Abraham "Iron Bridge" Darby but I have no evidence of this, and since there is fair bit of information on Ancestry about Abraham Darby's descendants I think it unlikely. Still, you follow up all leads.

- Tim

William George DARBY/DERBY/DARBEY born Somerset, UK

I am trying to find any records for my great grandfather William George DARBY born c1859 Taunton (St Mary Magadelen), Somerset and his family. Here is the information I have so far:

1.Marriage certificate for George DERBY & Susan POMEROY – married 03 April 1889 Registers Office, Stoke Damerel, Devon. George’s age is listed as 30yrs on the marriage certificate. Fathers name is listed as Samuel DERBY (could be his grandfathers name). The occupation for George is listed as labourer. His father Samuel’s occupation is listed as Malaster.
2.Death certificate of Susan DARBY (nee POMEROY) – husband shown as William George DARBY occupation general labourer who was present at time of death. Living at time of death Blindwell, Millbrook, Cornwall
3.1901 census – George DARBY listed as born c1865 Taunton Somerset. Occupation listed as clay quarry man.
4.1891 census – George DERBEY listed as born c1857 Marilan Somerset (have not been able to locate a place called Marilan). Occupation listed as general laborer
5. Believe he is related to the Darby family from St Mary Magdalen, Taunton, Somerset but have not been able to confirm the connection.
6.Children of George DARBY & Susan POMEROY were all born Millbrook,Cornwall are Maud 1891, George 1897, Mabel 1898 & Samuel 1900. According to the 1911 census there was a 5th child (deceased) this could be Elizabeth born St. Germans Cornwall 1889.
7. Died 14 Dec 1935 in Millbrook, St Germans, Cornwall. Age given as 77yrs but this may not be correct
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Diane
William Darby II 1693 - 1775, his first wife's surname???

Does anyone have a good source for the surname of William Darby II's (1693 - 1775) first wife? I have seen her first name given as Mary, Marion and Mercy. I have also seen a surname of Durfee, but I have found no irrefutable source for that. When I research the Durfee connection, Mary Durfee seems too young with a birth year of 1710 to marry in 1724 (of course this date may be incorrect, the eldest child was born in 1730...) Other's give Mary/Mercy, no surname, with a birthyear of 1699, which fits better with marriage in 1724. Another problem I have with the Durfee surname is the father of Mary Durfee, b. 1710, died in RI in 1754, how did Mary Durfee come to be in New Jersey to marry in 1724. William Darby II did not seem to have a connection to RI. Does anyone out there have a good source for this mystery woman?
