I am looking for information about Helen Marion Darling. I know that she married Thomas Richard Parry. She died in a fire in Virginia on Feb. 12, 1952. My mother was one of her children, and they were all put into foster care. She was born in Mass, and we believe that she was married before to possibly a Sowers and had other children before she married Parry. Any information would be helpful.

Thank you, Evelyn.

I have a handful of Darling tintypes that I would be happy to share electronically.

The first one is of Sophronia Darling, who may have been the second wife of John Darling who was born in 1790 in Mass. They were early Otto, Cattaraugus Co. settlers and they later moved to Fayette County Iowa somewhere in the 1850's.

The second one is either Sophronia, younger or it may be her daughter Lucy who was born in 1839.

The third one and fourth may be either DG Darling (David), Lucy's brother, born in 1829 or it could also be Will W. Hammond.

If you are interested in seeing electronic copies of these, email me. I would love to be sure on these and possibly connect with people who have more information on this family.

John Darling 1787-1859

My gg grandfather, John Darling was born in North Adams, MA and he died at sea off the coast of Oregon in April 1859. He had three wives, the first two of whom are buried in North Otto, Cattaraugus Co., New York. In 1853, he along with the family from the third marriage, migrated to Fayette County, Iowa. John is decended from the Deniece Darling line. This is a very old New England family.

I have found out a lot about this family through online connections but on one site, it noted that he served in the NY legislature. There are no dates or specifics. Does anyone have any info on this or is there an easy way to discover exactly what he did or did not do? Thank you.

Darling Immigrants to the US

Has anyone else heard a story about the
Darlings? I heard that a few Darlings
came to America and then spread all up
and down the East Coast, and of course,
they eventually spread all across the
continent. I bet everyone that has the last
name darling is somehow related, but it has
been so long that no one really knows how.
I've only been able to get back to my grandpa
Lyman Darling who was born in 1840 and died
in 1913. He lived in Illinois and married
Nancy E. They had a son Frank.
Does anyone know any of the original Darling
immigrants?

He married Meriam Tilton Fleming on Staten Island in 1843 and had children on their trek to Wisconsin finally settling in Tabor, Iowa where 5 family members are buried. One of their children went to California while the rest went to Washington State. After 40+ years of this I still can't find anything past 1812 in NY!

So, if anyone is interested they can take a look at my site and see if there is any connection.

Scott Darling
Spokane, Wa

Early Darling connection to Joseph Darling d. Fairfield, Maine

I would appreciate any information you have on Joseph Darling who appears to have settled in Fairfield, Maine in the late 1700's.

I can trace my family line through to Joseph, wife Mary and son Daniel of Fairfield but get stuck there. At least one person lists Amos Darling (wife Hebsebah Bruce) has Joseph's father.

My grandfather, Eurotis Horace Darling was born in Patten, Maine in 1891. His father was Horace (b. 1851), whose father was Daniel (b. 1823 in Hartland, ME), whose father was Daniel (b. 1788 in Fairfield, ME). I stop there.

Any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Julietta Darling

Etta Darling married Robert Newman 28 Oct 1884 at Williamsport, Warren County, Indiana. They had two children, Josephine Newman, born in Danville, Illiniis in April 1884.

On the marriage license it said Julietta was born in Williamsport, but on the birth information for Josiphine it says Juliette was born in Missouri.

Checking the 1870 census of Warren County, I didn't find a Juliett, or Etta Darling listed with any Darling family names.

There was a Jay Darling who witnessed her marriage return who was listed several times in the birth listings of Warren County (1882 - 1920), but I haven't been able to find his name on any Indiana or Illinois census records.

Julietta's marriage return didn't list her parents. Most likely they were deceased at the time of her marriage and she may have been living with relatives in Indiana??

Julietta died 24 Jan 1892 in Lafayette or Dayton, Indiana. She was burried in the in Greenbush Cemetery in Lafayette, Indiana.

If anyone can provide information on her family, parents or siblings, I would appreciate it very much.

Still looking for the parents of John Darling who married Temperence Dyer in Wellfleet, MA, 1791. Sister of John may have been Lydia Stearns of Cambridge. Cannot find her parents either. Many Darling families in MA so cannot find the link. Possibly related to Darling family of Duxbury since they also alternate John, Samuel and Benjamin as first names.
Jo Darling
I'm trying to sort out the early John Darlings in MA. I'm looking for the parents of Capt. John Darling b. 1769, who married Temperence Dyer, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Dyer, in Wellfleet. MA. On an early document he said that he was from Boston. His sister might have been Lydia Stearns of Cambridge. John, Samuel and Benjamin are reoccurring names in the family. Do they fit into the Darlings of Duxbury, Mendon, Braintree, Bellingham? Would appreciate any information.

Jo

Darling Family in MI

I am researching the Darling family in Michigan. Principly descendants of Joseph Darling and Nancy Ann Davis of Jackson Co, MI. Right now I am attempting to ascertain the parentage of Asa Darling, born abt. July 1867. In 1880 Census Asa is listed are living with his grandparents Samuel Straight & Harriet Ann Higdon in Leslie Twp, Ingham Co, MI. Unfortunately I have not been able to determine who his parents were or what happened to them. Searches of Samuel & Harriet's female children (one of whom would likely be Asa's mother) has not produced any hits. Living nearby to Samuel & Harriet is the Constant True Darling family with wife Martha Higdon, sister of Harriet. In later Census' Asa had a son named Constant Lee Darling. Cannot verify a connection between Asa and Constant True Darling. Anyone with information please contact me: hal@wkar.org
Thank you.

Chester DARLING Biography, b. 1821 VT to OH to WI

From "History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 833.

Town of Bangor

CHESTER DARLING, farmer, Sec. 5; P. O. Bangor; is one of the early and prominent settlers of La Crosse County. He was born in Groten, Caledonia Co., Vt., Jan. 29, 1821. He was married when 18 years of age, to Miss Sallie Emery. He removed to Licking Co., Ohio, in 1840, where his wife died; was there engaged in work at his trade, that of a carpenter, and he there married his second wife; came to Dane Co., Wis., in the summer of 1846, and settled in the town of Dunkirk, near Stoughton. In the fall of 1853, he settled in what is now the town of Hamilton, near Salem, though he was temporarily in La Crosse County several years previous to that time. He purchased his present farm, July, 1855, of Charles C. Chase. This farm is one of the first, perhaps the first, entered in La Crosse County. It was entered by Abial Morrison. Mr. Darling lost his second wife on Christmas, 1873. His present wife was Miss Hester Cooley. He has six children by his second wife. His father came to La Crosse County in 1852, and settled in Bangor, where he died about 1860. Like many of the other pioneers of Wisconsin, who, by industry and economy, have secured a competency, he began life poor, and endured all the hardships and privations, incident to the life of a pioneer.

[I am not related to this family and have no further information.
Birt Darling, Obit, died 1996, from Lansing, Michigan

Copied from Lansing State Journal; Lansing, Michigan; Saturday, June 15-1996, page 2B.

Birt Darling, 85,
history writer
Birt Darling will be remembered as a man who took the dryness out of history. Darling, 85,
died Thursday, in Ocala, Fla.
He was born in Lansing and had been an Owosso resident. Darling worked at the Lansing
State Journal for 35 years, as a reporter and editor until he retired in 1973.
He was the author of City in the Forest, published in the early 1950s, about the history of
Lansing. "Birt took the dryness out of history and interpreted the mysteries of archaeology and
astronomy for the layman," said Frank Hand, former reporter at the Lansing State Journal. He
was modest shy and polite but he could devastate an erring reporter by a look or phrase.
Darling also wrote several articles for national magazines on the history and archeology in the
Great Lakes and founded the Michigan Archaeological Society in the 1950s.
He was a member of the Lansing Board of Education's Special Committee for Local History in
the Library and helped create the Local History Room in the Lansing Public Library.
Darling is survived by wife Dorothy Darling of Ocala, Fla.; son, John Darling of Ashland,
Oregon; daughters Linda Darling Netzloff of Okemos, Joan Darling Jones of Vancouver,
Wash., and Kathlyn Telgard of Leland and six grandchildren.
Lansing resident Pat McCarthy, a retired Lansing State Journal editor said: "Birt had the knack
of making history live. He almost single-handedly began the statewide revival of interest in history."

Note: Not related to me.

Sophronia Darling (1804-Vermont-1892-Iowa

I am trying to find information on Sophronia (Rolf) Darling, who was the third wife of John Darling. John was born in MA in 1787 and died in 1859 in Oregon. These people were very early settlers in Otto, New York and they migrated to Fayette County, Iowa in 1853. I can trace Sophronia up to 1870 and she seems to disappear after that point. My info says that she died in July of 1892 in Union, Iowa. Is there anyone out there who has information about her from 1870-1892.?

Looking for George Darling who died in Ohio in 1849,
parents, etc.

I have been able to search the Darlings starting with my grandfather Clarence Eugene Darling 1896-1965 all the way back to Ned Emanuel Darling alias Emanuel Darling Honn. Emanuels mother Susan De Lamater died in childbirth and his father George Darling died shortly after that and was raised by the Honns.

My mother knew Emanuel's son Ned Oscar Darling from visits when she was a child. What I have learned matches with names I found with my mothers knowelege.

Does anyone know the names and dates of George Darlings parents, birth, death, etc.

I would like to be able to trace the Darlings back to England/Scotland if possible.

I am happy to share any Darling info I gain with others.
We have little in photos, etc.

Thank you in advance for all your help.
-Jennifer Darling Frazer

I also can't find info on Hellen (aka Ellen). If anyone has any ideas, or a Daniel Darling who disappeared, please respond. Thanks

He is very difficult to locate although he is shown as present at Elsies Wedding as her father. Elsie never thought she had a birth certificate, and I have been unable to trace one, although she thought she was born 24/06/1907. She spent all her life living in London. Any details about Elsie and in Albert would be appreciated.
Thanks

One of my GG grandmothers was Hannah Darling (baptised 1816 in Houghton le Spring, County Durham - St Michael's and All Angels)

Her parents were Joseph Darling and Ann Thompson. They were married in Bishopwearmouth 16.05.1807.

Does anyone else have these people in their family tree or have information about them?
DARLING

Can anyone give me any descendant/ascendant information on a Jane Moore, who married a George Hockings and gave birth to a son William Hockings in 1851. William married Cecilia Darling on 25 September, 1873 at West End, South Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Cecilia's parents were William Darling and Christiana Wynne.

I am just returning to my family history research after a long absence. I would like to construct a family tree for DARLING.

For a start, can anyone give me any ascendant/descendant information about a William Darling, who married Christiana Wynne. They were the parents of Cecilia Darling, who married a William Hockings on 25 September, 1873 at West End, South Brisbane, Queensland. William, born in 1851, was the son of Jane Moore & George Hockings.

It is my ultimate aim to have a worldwide family tree for all people of the DARLING name. I would appreciate any family tree information from anyone in the world who shares this same name within their families as I hope to make connections with them all.

If anyone wishes to send me information, either a Gedcom or a file attached to an email would be very welcome. I would be quite happy to send anyone who requests it all the information I have in return. I run Legacy 6 as a genealogy programme on my computer.

Thanks for your assistance, everyone. .
Darling given names Nelson, Otis, Lyman, Truman, etc.

It seems that certain names occur very often in the various Darling threads, lines, etc.

Has anyone found a common ancestor/family group for these lines? I have noticed that along with the common given names the family groups moved into the same areas of the U.S., often appearing in the same state/region for census after census. Naming conventions of the time often led to the use of the name of fathers, grandfathers, etc. and would seem to point to connections.

My father's family has the same occurences and they have helped me to connect quite a few groups and got me past a number of "brick walls". I am hoping that I can find a way past the current one I have battled with my Darling line for over a year.

I am looking at a book called The Darling Family in America -- Early Settlers prior to 1800 --published in 1913 in New York. It has a footnote that says this Carlos Parsons Darling is working on a book about the Darling family. Claims he has a "mass of information" that may be the best source of information on the Darling family any place to date. I would love to get a copy of that book.
Does anyone know of this book and is it available?
My book is a reprint by Higginson Book Company

My Rhode Island Darling Brick wall

Hi Darling People:
I would appreciate any help on getting past this brick wall in my Darling family tree.
My great great grandfather was William P Darling born in 1825 in Rhode Island
My brick wall is that I cant find the data on his parents, in order to further trace my Darling ancestry.
When William P Darling dies in May 1865 in Plymouth Massachusetts his parents are listed on his death record as Andrew Darling and (what looks like) Lydia Darling- both of whom are from Rhode Island.
The data is entered in fancy scroll hand writing (don’t you just love those?)
I can find no record of a Lydia marrying a Andrew Darling in Rhode Island.
I know that William P Darling married Almira Vaughan (daughter of Lemuel and Diana ) from Plymouth, but I cant even find William and Almira’s marriage record (which would give me the names of his parents)
William and Almira are listed in the June 1860 census of Chiltonville (Plymouth County) with their children, Edmund F 11 (my great grandfather), Flora 6, William H 3,and Myra 1.

It is possible that his parents data is wrong. I am also wondering if I am reading his mother’s name wrong. I have found a William Darling (with the same birth year) living in Rhode Island with his siblings and his widowed mother (looks like Seriah Darling) however , I have nothing to connect her with Andrew Darling.
So Please HELP.
I would love to know which branch of the New England Darlings I am descended from.
Thank you so much
Beth

Lucy R (Darling) Hammond

Here is a good one and I need help. I am looking for information on my great grandmother, Lucy R (Darling) Hammond. She was born to John and Sophronia Darling in Otto, New York on Aug. 24, 1839. Her father, John was born in 1790 in Mass. and her mother, Sophronia was born in Vermont in about 1804.

According to census records, she had a brother David, born in 1829, another brother, John N. born in 1844, and a third brother, Charles born in 1847.

Lucy married William Hammond of New York. I have no idea as to whether in NY or Iowa or as to the date. Other than one picture in an old tintype album, there seems to be no other records that this man ever existed. He was definitely out of the picture after 1882. Lucy had two children who lived into adulthood and at least two others that we had no idea had ever existed until checking census records. Sophronia born in 1858 and my grandfather, Frank Hammond Sr. who was born in 1882. Both were born in Iowa.

I have an old tintype album that belong to Lucy. I am almost positive that the tintypes are of the Darlings. If there are any distant relatives out there who can help with the history of this branch of Darlings OR who would have anything that would relate to Lucy R, it would be greatly appreciated. I am having the tintypes copied so they can be shared. Records on Lucy and Will just do not seem to exist anywhere.

Lucy died in 1928, her daughter, Sophrona died in about 1934 and my grandfather, Frank Hammond Sr. died in 1956. These are the people who would have known what happened but unfortunately, they kept the secret.

If any Darling relatives have family trees, family Bibles, or any other kind of documentation as to Lucy and Will, your help is greatly appreciated.

1880 Darling Family in Talladega County, Alabama

Hello Group: I have found a DARLING family in the 1880 Talladega County, Alabama census. The head of the family is JOHN DARLING--age-60, born in NC, with both parents born in NC also. His wife is MARY--age-20, born in NC, with both parents born in NC also. Children are HM( F )--age 18; MARY( F )--age 14; LENARD( M )--age 12; JASPER( M )--age 9; POIFEILLA( F )--age 7; SHANCLATY( F )--age 5; DAVIS( M )--age 3; and STEPHEN( M )--age 1. In reading this, Mary could be older than 20, and some of the names could be spelled much differently. Anyway, this information is located in the Talladega County Census of 1880; the Cheldersburg District; District 139; Page 11; and Household 85. I have Darling in my family tree, but I don't know who this one belongs to. Maybe it will help someone.

Descendants of Joseph Darling & Hulda Cotton Darling in MI

I am researching descendants of my 4th GG Joseph Darling (b.Sep 22, 1764 d.Jun 03, 1844) & Hulda Cotton Darling (b.Aug 05, 1766 d.Oct 05, 1841) (they were 2nd cousins who married). Joseph & Hulda were born in Middleborough, Plymouth Co, MA, removed to Woodstock, Windsor Co, VT and then to Blackman Twp, Jackson Co, MI. I am descended through their son Josephus & wife Nancy Ann Davis. Then Constant True Darling & wife Martha Higdon and their son Harry Columbus Darling & Emma Francis Large. Many of the descendants of this branch of the Darling family resided in Jackson, Ingham, Genesee & Antrim counties, MI.

I have discovered the burials of Joseph & Hulda and Josephus & Nancy in Jackson Co, MI

I have quite a lot of info about the children of Joseph & Hulda and Josephus & Nancy. However, not much about the descendants of Constant & Martha. If anyone can provide info, it would be appreciated. Will share info.

Hi. I am searching for any information about my great great grandmother Sarah Darling. She was born in about 1865 in Sunderland, Durham, England. Her parents were William Darling and Margaret (maiden name unknown). She had a sister named Mary Jane and on the 1881 census it looked like she may have had a brother William as well. Sarah eventually married Charles Patten in 1883 and they had three children Margaret, Charles and Grace. Sarah died in the Sunderland Workhouse in 1906. Any bit of information if known about Sarah Darling would be very much appreciated. Thanks very much.

Kathleen
