Hi,
My name is Sharon Meyer, formally Date. I was told by someone that has done a family tree that the Dates originated in Ireland as McDaith and shortened the name to Date when they moved to England. When the family migrated to the states, some of them stayed here and some went on to Japan, which is why some Japanese have the name Date. He claims that if your last name is date and you live in the US, you are all related. I don't know how much of this is true.

I am researching my family tree also and a branch of that is named Skelsey.

My great grandfather was William Henry Skelsey who was married to Annie Dixon.

It would appear that William moved to either New Zealand or
Australia and Annie stayed in the UK and later in life remarried.

William had a brother Thomas is it possible that this Thomas is your grandfather and Annie Dixon your grandmother ?

Hi Ann
Just stumbled onto your message. My grandfather was Thomas Skelsey born 13 July 1884 in UK, married Ellen Coughlin. Emigrated to Wanganui NZ in 1919 but he visited Wanganui approx 1914 for several months before returning to UK and doing service in France. It is a coincidence that the name, Wanganui and 1914 feature.
Thomas may have met your grandmother in Wanganui and she moved to Australia where your father was born.
My father was William Henry Skelsey born in London, his grand father was Henry William Skelsey and great grandfather William Skelsey.
Hope you receive this message.
Bill Skelsey

DATE family, USA, Connecticut, 19th century

I call attention to the Connecticut USA family of David B. Date.

In the 1880 US census, the name is transcribed for the index as “Data.” But when I look at the original handwritten census image for 1880, I see that the name entered was Date with an “e,” matching the handwriting of the enumerator elsewhere on the page.

There is a senior and there is a junior. First the junior David B. Date. In the 1880 census he is 33 and living in Franklin CT. In the 1870 census he is 23, born in Connecticut, and living in Middletown CT. In the 1850 census he is three years old and lives in Lyme (New London County) CT with his parents, David B. and Mary Date, and his younger sister Ellen. The senior David B. Date was 39 in 1850, and Mary was 25. All were born in Connecticut. The boy’s middle initial is “B”--as in the case of the 1880 David.

I found the Date family in the 1860 census, still living in Lyme. (The index has them as "Dale" instead of Date. You will see that the crossing of the "t" was wide of the mark.) The elder David B. Date is missing in 1860, and Mary is described as "Farming Widow." The daughter listed in 1850 as Ellen is now listed as "Helen." Additional children are Hiram and Frederic.

One can find Hellen Date in the 1870 census, living in Colchester (New London County) CT. She is 22 and single, and she works in the "Rubber Mill" or "Roller Mill." She is entered and transcribed as "Hellen," and the last name is transcribed correctly this time.

I am not related to this family but instead picked up the trail in response to a census challenge.
Hi Leann,
Richard has given you the big picture. My guess is you belong to the London branch of the family. You will need to get back to your grandfather Skelsey at least before we can try and link you in. Have you got a copy of your father's birth certificate? Tony.

Hi I saw your message on the internet regarding the Skelsey name - I have been doing the family tree. Could you tell me what country you are from. The Skelsey's were pf Viking stock and settled in the mid lands in England about 9th century - Quite a large family were in a place called Cubbington and two families moved to London about 1800 (this is where my ancestors come into it). My gg grandfather owned coffee houses in LOndon, my grandfather came out to New Zealand about 1919 and brought his family out here. I have quite alot of info about the Skelsey's on a file and am quite happy to share it

cheers

Richard SKelsey

I'm wondering if anyone out there knows anything of George Date (b. abt 1841) and Jane Hodder (b. abt 1842) in Dodington, Somerset. They had seven children, all born in London; Henry Thomas (b. abt 1876), Emily Jane (b. abt 1877), Francis Richard (my line, b. 1878), George (b. abt 1881), Ada S. (b. abt 1883), Charles G. (b. abt 1887), and William (b. abt 1890). All were born in Notting Hill.

George Date died around 1890, and by 1891, Jane had moved back to Somerset (Bridgwater, to be precise) and was listed as being widowed. I've had no luck finding a marriage certificate for this couple, or a birth certificate for either. I'd love any information on the Date line that anyone could supply.

Hello,
My name is Tillie and I am researching genealogy for the names Gentry and Greene. My husband's ggmother was Celia Greene, who married John Gentry, who were both from NC, but moved to Idaho, where they made their home and raised their family.

My m-i-l had the name of a Percy Greene in her personal phonebook (which means that she and her husband had known him), who was related to Celia, but she doesn't remember how he was related to Celia. The family thought that Percy might have been a nephew or cousin, but we are not sure. It sounded like Percy was older than my in-laws, who were born in the early 20's, as they thought he would have passed on by now. This is where I am stuck, as I don't have anymore information than that.

As I don't have dates, I have made an approximate timeline to the generations.
John Gentry and Celia Greene-------1860-70's
son, William---------------------------------1880-90's
living son--------------------------------------1920's

Would that time frame fit in with your Percy Greene relation?
Do you have any knowledge of a Celia Greene related to your Percy Greene? The Greene family is a huge one, and cannot believe how many Celia's there were in that time period. Please let me know if there is a connection or not. Thank you. Regards, Tillie

Jenny,
I was glad to see your message. I have a quick question - a few years ago I found information on a Fred Battershall from Illinois - I believe he must have been from Waukegan. I do not have my notes with me. The information came from an old newspaper clipping from the Waukegan Daily News - March 1901, and said that Fred had been a guest at a card party hosted by friends of Mr. & Mrs. Mortimer Kapple. Do you by any chance have any info. on this Fred Battershall or know who he might have been?
I do have some information on Nellie Battershall, but she was a rather distant ancestor. I would like to find more information on George Battershall, Betsey Batttershall-Cady, and Rhoda Battershall-Esau (or Rhoda Batteshall-Rich). These 3 were siblings and the children of William & Emma Battershall. All three were married in Lake County, Illinois or the surrounding area. They were possibly also siblings of my great-great grandfather, Daniel M. Battershall. i would appreciate any info. you might have. Thank you.
Nancy Shandrew
