Hi Miranda. My name is Jane Melton and I am the granddaughter of James Sherman Daughety born in Lenoir county in 1881 to James Warren Daughety and Hariette (Ann?) Daughety. I only know of one brother to my grandfather. His name was Jesse Columbus Daughety. My grandfather had two half brothers whose last names were Moore. Hariette was married to a James Moore who died in the civil war. She married James Warren Daughety when the war ended. Do you know the name of my grandfather's brother who you think your family descends from? Would love to compare notes with you.

Yes, I've seen that census. Doesn't it just say "James," though? Without the Sherman? I know that he was born in the same year, so you may be right. I've emailed Rebecca Hill, who lives down in that area and who has done a lot of work on the Daughetys--to see if maybe she can clear things up.

In 1900 I find James Sherman w/parents Ivey and Allice not the names you have. I think you may want to check that out since you are doing a Daugherty genealogy book. Good luck and when the book is ready I wish to buy one.

I'm so sorry for not responding sooner! I apparently never got the notice in my email that someone had followed up on my message to the James Sherman thread.

Here's what I have on James Sherman and Litha Lillian:

According to “kcfin1,” she is the daughter of John Louis and Louisa Elizabeth (Unknown) Daughety. That means that she’s a descendant of Richard, of Owen III’s “first family,” and James Sherman is the descendant of Owen IV, of the “first family.” So they are some kind of cousins.

I am working on the last chapter of my book now--in between teaching 4-5 English classes every semester. That would be the "second family" who left NC in about 1797 and went to KY. That's my part of the family.

I would absolutely LOVE to have any information that you can share with me on either James's (Sherm's?) or Lillian's lines. Old family stories and old pictures are what will make this book more than just a listing of generations.

My personal email address is dosthart@gmail.com. My mailing address is Donna Hart, 701 N. Idler Lane, Greenville, IL 62246.

I would love to hear from any and all. I'm more than willing to share my own information, if you will share yours.

Hi. Just came across this discussion. As is usually the case, the whole Daughety-Daugherty-Daughtrey name thing is more complicated than we would like it to be.

I've been working on a book for several years tracing the descendants of Owen Dogharty (about 1656 - 1712).

The name in Ireland when he migrated to Norfolk, VA, was "Dogharty." Various documents in VA spelled his name perhaps 20 different ways--Dockerly, Dougherty, Doiety, etc. His son Owen II spelled his name "Dougharty" most of the time--or the recorders of his documents did. By the time Owen III moved from Norfolk, VA, to Craven County, NC, his name was spelled pretty consistently as "Daughety."

Yet the descendants of their brothers/cousins who resided in Johnston Co., NC, spelled their name "Daughtrey" most of the time--or the recorders of the documents did.

Owen III had two families. The 5 children of the first family remained in NC and continued to spell their name "Daughety." They still do today. The 5 children of the second family mostly migrated to KY in 1797. At first, they spelled their name "Daughety," but within a generation or two, had changed the spelling to "Daugherty."

Only one member of that second family remained in Craven County, NC, and, fairly quickly, his name was normally spelled "Daugherty." His descendants still spell the name that way today.

What I'm trying to say to you is that these were all members of the same family--all Irish. But their names were spelled differently.

Does that mean that what you said about the English spelling and the Irish spelling is not true? No, not at all. I have some church friends, who trace back to England, and their name is "Dawdy." But, as I say, it's more complicated than that.

Orign of the Surname Daughety?

The English surname Daughty and Doughty are phonetically equivalent, and the like-sounding surname Doty is fairly common in the US. The family of Enoch Daughty (son of Francis Daughty) miagrated from New York to VA pre-Revolutionary war. This family line has been traced back to the 1500s in England and is possibly the origin of some Daughety/Doughty/etc. lines of today..

It seems to be an unfounded common assumption that DAUGHETY is a minor variation of the Irish Daugherty, but the former is pronounced as "daughter , clip the 'er' and add 'y'" while Daugherty is a rough English phonetic rendering of a Gaelic name, prounounced something like "doch-er-tee" according to expatriate Irish acquaintances. The English Daughty seens to have well existed before the Anglo-Gaelic Daugherty was coined.

According to genealogists I have spoken with, some social organizations blurred the lines in the 1920-1950 era in order to establish pedigrees going way back, and these pedigrees are now of entertainment value only. Original documentation is difficult and expensive to search out.

I am interested in sharing information and ideas with others who want to protect the identity and integrety of the Daughety surname.

My great-grandfather's name was George Daughety. And most of my mother's family (the Daughety's) still live in the Pamlico-Craven-Jones County area. The reason I'm replying is that she actually mentioned the name Bessie Jenkins Daughety to me last night.

It appears that the majority of Daughetys in the US are in NC, and Kenston has the largest population.
My last known-for-sure ancestor was William J. (James, probably) Daughety, A Primitive Baptist Minister born about 1810, reportedly in North Carolina.

So far, I can't confirm family oral history and it appears that at least one Daughety was in the US prior to the Revolutionary War. Then, names appear in Virginia and North Carolina. At the time of the civil war, Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama had Daughetys in the war.

Does anyone have reliable Daughety history fron around 1750?
