Carter County TN by way of Pennsylvania? Absolom?

I'm researching Davenports in Carter County, TN... as most research goes, it gets convoluted pretty quickly, but I believe I have a good handle on my ancestor back to the civil war.. need some help on his ancestors:

My proven ancestor's name is not Davenport... it's Edens. Samuel Edens, born July 7, 1859 in Elizabethton, TN. His mother is known to be Elizabeth (Berry) Edens, who had been married to Rev. James Edens, Jr, until James' death, around 1852. Samuel Edens' death certificate from TN (2/11/1920) says that Elizabeth Berry is the mother and SAMUEL DAVENPORT is the father.

Samuel Davenport was a neighbor of the Edens' and many others in the Gap Creek area near Elizabethton. If Samuel was the father of Samuel Edens, he would have had a relationship with Elizabeth Berry after James, Jr's death, and before Samuel's marriage to Elizabeth Gourley.

My mother is the great granddaughter of Samuel Edens, and remembers "Aunt Sude" who was the daughter of Samuel Davenport and Elizabeth Gourley, as well as their other daughter. Samuel Davenport was also a participant in the East Tennessee Bridge Burning during the Civil war. East Tennessee was very pro-union, but was occupied by the Confederacy. Several bridges on the railroad that extended from Alabama through Tennessee to Virginia were targetted on one particular day, with moderate success. The men of East Tennessee were harrassed because of this and other acts against the confederates, and young Samuel, after his marriage to Elizabeth Gourley, was conscripted into the confederate artillery in February of 1863. He was captured in July 1863 at Vicksburg, MS, and offerred parole, but declined and was taken to the Union Prison in St. Louis, where he died September, 1863. He is buried in the national cemetery under a confederate headstone.

I believe I have good evidence that he is my 3rd great grandfather and am wondering if there are any DNA studies in which I could participate which might not be a likely waste of my time. I believe Samuel's father was Haymon or Harmon or Hermon Davenport, born in Pennsylvania, married to Patsy Treadway, and that they were ironworkers near the North Carolina/TN state line. I believe his grandfather's name was Absolom, and Absolom was also born in Pennsylvania.

If anyone has any information confirming or refuting any of the above, please let me know. Again, I feel pretty good about my research showing Samuel Davenport as an ancestor of mine.. so information about Hermon/Haymon's line would be very helpful. I feel I have good information about the Treadways and back.

Thanks for reading... isn't genealogy interesting?

Chris

a couple of corrections/updates to your post:
Theron's daughter's name was Sybil. She married Jerry Angeley and had three sons. Jerry Don lives in the Houston/Galveston area with his wife Sheila. Tom lives in East Texas with his wife Sherry. Sybil's first son was stillborn due to umbillicus around his neck at birth. He's buried in the Earth, Texas cemetery in/near the Kelley plot. I'm embarrassed to say I can't recall the baby's name.
Theron's son Jerry Elmer Devenport passed away in Giddings June, 2008 and his ashes rest in niche in the military cemetery near Killeen. Jerry had two daughters, Mauri and Leah.
Mauri Dee Devenport (b. 8/30/1957) married (6/14/1975) Kenneth Earl Hunter (b. 8/6/1955). They divorced 7/15/1997. They had two children:
Kevin Parker Hunter (b. 4/2/1980) was married 4/21/2007 to Stormi Emerson for 3 years, producing no children. Kevin currently lives in Ingleside with his daughter Kenzie Rachelle Hunter (born February 22, 2012) and her mother.
Crissy Dee Hunter (b. 11/7/1977) was married 10/14/2006 to Darren Jones of Fort Worth, Texas, where they reside with their sons Landon Travis Jones (b. 8/29/2008) and Tyler Kenneth Jones (b. 8/5/2011)
Leah Denise Devenport (b. 5/18/1959) was married 4 times Chester Hill, Larry Hargrave, Arthur Baker, and Tony Devaughn, and bore 3 sons. Leah and Tony reside in Brookshire, Texas. Leah and Chester Hill had two sons, Wesley (carried to term 12/13/1980 but did not survive at birth due to doctor/hospital negligence and placenta abruptus), and Jason, who married Kimie, a Japanese national, and they live in Katy, Texas, with their son Caleb. Leah and Larry Hargrave had one son, Trevor Riley Hargrave, who lives in Brookshire with his wife Kristin and their son Tyson Riley Hargrave.

I have recently been following the Wells then Davenport lines in my tree and I have to say I do not know what is correct with this Humphrey Davenport line. one marriage is after the wife died!!! Some of the kids are born before the stated marriages so whose kids are they? When I look at the member connect for these Humphreys there is so much variable in locations for marriage, for death, for location, for dates! Does anyone have this family and they KNOW who and when and where?

I have Richard Wells son of Zorobabel Wells m Katherine Davenport. Kathernine Davenport is the daughter of Humphrey Davenport (1697-1768) and Sarah Hawkins. Humphrey Davenport is the son of Humphrey (1656-1735)m to Anna Rosenkrans. Humphrey (1656-1735) is son of Humphrey (1615-1660); his father is also Humphrey(1566-1610)

I am yanking my braid on this group of Humpheys! Anyone that has made sense of these; I would love to hear from you!
Valerie

Vicki,
I am having an incredibly busy day but did look at my family history today.
Hezekiah D. Davenport died in 1850 and lists his wife as Frances J. Davenport.
You state that Nellie died in 1848 so perhaps Frances J. is his 2nd wife as she was still alive in 1870 on MI census living with Stillman and his new wife. She was 65 then.
This may be the answer to this confusion. Hezekiah's youngest child, anson was born in 1840 so all of the children listed in his will could have been born to Nellie before her death.
Their children were: Benjamin B, Thomas D, Ruth, Nelson, Amos and Charity,Sarah Ann and Anson in chronological order.
I will get back to you on this. The deeds I found were on USGenweb site for Tompkins Co. Apparently when Hezekiah died he left some of his land to his sons and they sold their shares to Frances J. just before they all left for MI.
Do you know when Frances died and where she is buried, MI I would guess.
Wendy Sheldon Black

WOW Wendy! This is just the sort of thing I was hoping for! YES, I will be awaiting you next communication:-)

Here is another question:

On the MI Death Notice for Benjamin Davenport, it cites his death as 24 Sept 1873 in Lee, Calhoun, MI & his parents as Hezakiah Davenport & Nellie Davenport.

There are other people on Ancestry.com with Benjamin in their tree that cite Hezekiah D. Davenport as father with his dates either 1765-1832 OR 1805-1850 & a Nelly Badcock 1803-1848 as his mother.

You said Hezekiah & Frances J Clark were Benjamin's parents. That explains who the Frances J. Davenport was that was living with Benjamin & his son, Stillman, it was Benjamin's mother.

How do you think some many others show Nelly Badcock as his mother? Maybe Frances J. goes by Nellie; maybe she was a Clark at birth; then married a Badcock, then married a Davenport??

I would love to have a copy of anything you have on Hezekiah!

My hubby is related by the following:
His father: Gerald Leslie Hall
Gerald's father: John Leslie Hall
John's mother: Blanche May "Nellie" Davenport
Blanche's father: Stillman Max Davenport
Stillman's father: Benjamin B. Davenport

Thanks Again!
Vicki Moss-Hall & Douglas K. Hall

Hi, vicki and douglas,
I am a descendant of Thomas Davenport who was one of Benjamin's brothers.
I have a copy of Hezekiah's will that lists his children and his wife, Frances J. Her maiden name was Clark. BEn and Thomas moved to MI with Frances but Thomas enlisted in Civil War and was killed so his wife and children returned to NY.
I am wondering if Frances used Nelly as a nickname, perhaps for her middle iinitial but can't prove it. She seems to use Frances on census and legal documents. I also have some deeds with her and Hezekiah's names listed.
IT is 8 am in CA now and I am off to a meeting but I will get back to you later and will be glad to share what I have with you.
Wendy Sheldon Black

I am working on my husband's family tree. I have reached back to Benjamin B. Davenport b) 1824 NY, but now I am stuck at his parents.

Most others on Ancestry.com reflect Hezekiah D. Davenport & Nelly Badcock as his parents. I believe this is because Ancestry.com gives a death record for a Benjamin Davenport, that lists those as his parents names, however, my problem with that is 2 fold.

1 - There is a Frances J. Davenport that shows up a few times as living with Benjamin and his son, Stillman. I assumed she was Benjamin's mother but she could be an Aunt also. I had no way of knowing exactly who she was yet.

2 - Do we know for sure that the death record on Ancestry.com IS our Benjamin B. Davenport? I have no way of knowing that at this point.

Does anyone have the birth record of Benjamin B. Davenport, to confirm his parents? Benjamin's wife was Mary E. ?, also born in NY abt 1825. Also by looking at neighbors on the Census, it appears Benjamin may have brother's named: Warren Davenport 1823 NY, George Davenport 1826, & Anson Davenport 1836 NY?

Thanks,

Vicki Moss-Hall & Douglas K.

Is the William Davenport - born 1748 in England & Married to Comfort Fisher- the same William Davenport who was shipwrecked on his way to America & picked up by a Dutch Merchant ship?

There are so many William Davenports....and to be honest, i am not even certain that the shipwreck story is true.

Thanks!

I am still searching for William and Edward M. Glasby. Believe they would have been adopted in 1882 to 1883 by a Davenport family. Their sister, Tempie Ann, was adopted by Charles Quincy and Frances Jordan Chapman. She married Edward Owens. Any information would be appreciated!

I am looking for information about Sterling Davenport.

Here's what I know: Sterling was married to Elsie Barnhart Davenport (b. 1889) and they lived in Pilot Grove, MO and Moniteau County, MO.

They had five children:
Lorena
Gracie
Hattie (My great grandmother)
Leonard
Capitola

I can't find anything about Sterling's family. I thought it was James Davenport, but there are several other James Davenports and I just keep getting dead ends.

Lorena's maiden name was Sinnett, and Hattie married Dorsey Thacker.

Any help would be appreciated!

I started working on this again this year, mostly for my husband's side, but I am looking at all of my family again. I know that Amon C. (Caphus?) married Mary Elizabeth Admas and was the son of Travis Devenport (Davenport) and Margaret Vaughn. After that I am stuck.

Donna

Hi! It's great to hear from you, Elizabeth is my grandma too. The Manley's are everywhere but for the life of me I can not figure out which Davenport family in CT he belongs too. His wife Elizabeth is also a mystery. Haven't quiet figured out if her maiden name was Clark or Clards. There is a Davenport family in Coventry near the Manley's but I can not link the two families together.
Which of their childen is your grandparent. Mine Grandma is Lucy. There seems to be a whole bunch of them. Do you have an ancestry.com account? I keep my tree private unless just incase there are any mistake. If you type in Valorus Starr you'll be sure to find my tree and send a request to see my tree and I will send you an invitation. If you don't have an log in with them we will figure something out. I truly look forward to hearing from you. Janet

Mary Lynn,
I suggest you forget Fauntleroy. There has never been any evidence that he even existed let alone being the father of Davis. This is not my line, but if you want the latest on Pamunkey research, you shoud check out http://www.pamunkeydavenport.com/ You may also want to get a copy of John Scott Davenport's "The Pamunkey Davenport Papers" released in 2009. Its over 1000 pages of rearch plus the first five generation. Bill Davenport

Bill: I appreciate your getting back to me so quickly.I will check out Pamunkey Davenport and if I still have questions, I'll get right back to you. I got the fauntleroy Davemport from a thread but I haven't completely checked it out for auth. for my line. what line do you belong to. I have been searching for Stephen Davenport who was "reported" to have gone with the wagontrain that ended up as the Donner party that got caught in the high sierria pass. He was supposed to have been a driver for one of the wagons. He would have to have been born in the timeframe of 1800 t0 1926 to be old enough to do this. they were in the Salt Lake Valley 1846. A year before the mormons got there. We lost track of him abd are wondering if this could be our Stephen. mary lynn

Mary - For more information on Davis Davenport, do a search on "Pamunkey Davenport". It is a very popular southern Davenport line and there has been much research on it. What are your sources that Fauntleroy was the father of Davis? I'm not sure there is any evidence that he was a real person. And it is unlikely Davis had a middle name in that era. Bill Davenport.

I am searching the Davenport line. I have Davis David Davenport born 1666- D-24 may 1732 in King William Va. I have his father as Faunt Leroy Davenport born 1630 and died 1650. I know it has been a few years that you sent in your message to ancestry about this line but by chance do you have any other names of children, birthdates, marriages or a list of their family group sheets. I would love to see if we are related to you. mary e-mail maryfromorem@yahoo.com. hope to hear from you soon.
