Jewish Davies

Hi!

I am looking for other Jewish Davies out there. My grandfather, Jack Davies, was born in New York around 1910 and had parent who had apparently emmigrated from Romania to Wales, where the family name (which had been either Goldberg or Davidovitch...Grandpa was a bit of a storyteller when it came to family history.) was changed to Davies. He had many brothers and sisters. I know one of his sisters was Betty or Bessie one sister was Sidney, two brothers, Charles and Irving. His father's name was Zulkah Meyer.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Miri Davies Pardo, Ph.D.

Common Surname Problems

Since my last query on a board worked out well for me, I hope this one might as well.

One individual in my tree is a lady called Eliza Ellen Davies. I think it may be because the surname is quite a common one that I am having problems finding out details of her.

I have her marriage certificate that states:

She was 20 at the end of 1886 so presumably was born during 1866, and that her father was John Davies.

I also have her death certificate that states:

She was 60 years of age, mid 1926, which confirms the 1886 birth.

With so little to go on I tried the census records but there seems to be too many to identify which record is her with any certainty.

Discussing her with the remaining family members from the generation older than myself tells me that the family lived in Wales for a while after the marriage, (my aunt still owns a welsh toby jug memento from that time) so my gut feeling is that Eliza probably came from mid Wales.

It seems I managed to stumble across the following which suggests her mother's name is Sarah (but this is assuming this really is the Eliza I am looking for, which I can't be sure) http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1871wales.... For some reason this record isn't found if I do a census search 'all years' on Eliza's name only. (Bad search algorithm ?)

I can't really go back over all the things I have tried so far (even if I could recall them) but it is worth mentioning that I eventually paid a large wad of cash to the GRO so they would check a wide range of certificates and send the most likely match. I thought that would settle the matter at a price, but to be honest, I was unimpressed with the result. They opted to send the birth certificate for someone who not only has no second forename shown on the birth certificate (which I think probably should rule it out immediately) but someone whose mother is not named Sarah (as the 1871 census, where I think I may have found Eliza, implies it should).

Any idea how to progress from a position where one can't identify which, if any of the records, is the one required ?

Thanks

Hello, all,

I am searching for my husband's ancestors and have found the Welsh Davies to be blessedly difficult to track. Daniel C. & Urinah (Richards) Davies came to the US in 1892 according to the 1900 Census records. Both were born in Wales, South Wales I believe, and lived at least for a time in a town called Toneyraphale or Tonyrefail in South Glamorgan.

Daniel was born to Henry and Mary (Llewellyn) Davies on 31 May 1866 & died on 13 Dec 1918 in Johnstown, PA. Urinah was born to Daniel Richards & his unknown wife on 13 Oct 1866 & died 1 Sept 1944 in Johnstown, PA.

They settled first in Ohio. Moved to Madison, Ind. then moved to Johnstown, Cambria Co. PA. They had 8 children, five of whom are buried in Johnstown, one in Ohio, another in Arz and one who died in Belgium as a paratrooper in WWII.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Does anyone care to send me a clue how to research Welsh ancestory from afar?

Good luck, everyone, in your searches and thank you for your time, Kate Rauhauser-Smith

I am seeking information on a K.C.J. Davies who received an M.A. from Cambridge and was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

He was likely born in England and was the son of a Reverend E. Davies. He held the rank of Major in 1920 with possible service in India (he lectured on the subject), and had left the service by 1924. He possibly emigrated to Canada and was living in Vancouver, British Columbia in the mid-1920's.

Regards,

Andrew Pridham

In the 1891 Census record her birthplace is listed as Rhymney and her age is 20,her Father is William and Mother is Mary, there is also a granddaughter living with them named Margaret Mary who I believe married a David John Anthony both born in Maesteg.Mary married Albert Dyson in 1904 but the marriage certificate shows her age as 25,I am hoping that someone recognises this family and can tell me when she was actually born and what her Mothers maiden name was, any clues on how to check for Rhymney births would also be appreciated

I've been looking for info on my gg-grandfather, Samuel DeVies. I can't find anything on the surname "DeVies." Davies is the closest thing I can find. I found him listed in the 1850 Census in Tennessee with his name spelled "Deves" which the family knows to be incorrect.

He married Sarah Catherine Leffew b.07/15/1845. They had three children:
Julie Catherine DeVies b. 11/1868 in KY
Samuel DeVies
Mary Frances DeVies b. 12/3/1873 in IN

Please let me know if you've ever seen the name spelled "DeVies" or if you think there may be a connection. Thanks ;-)

Davies, Elias, Festiniog

David Davies born 17?? a farmer and wife unknown, was father of Elias Davies b.circa 1829.
Elias Davies married age 25 on Jan 13 1854 Elizabeth Owens (a widow nee Roberts) age 33 at Church of St Davids, Festiniog. They were both shown as Drapers resident in Tanygrisiau. Elizabeths father was a William Roberts, a farmer.
Born to Elizabeth on 13 August 1854 at London House Festiniog was David Elias Davies.
David Elias Davies became a quarryman around Festiniog, married unknown, and had son William Henry Davies b. circa 1882. Sadly David died 24 April 1902 from quarry accident injuries.
William Henry Davies age 22 married 10 Oct 1904 Avrina Jane Lloyd age 23 at Bowydd Chapel Blaenau Festiniog. William was shown as resident 6 Park Square Blaenau Festiniog, and as being a quarryman.
They had a son (and others) Gwyn Alun Davies at Aberdare Glamorgan 15 Nov 1913.
Sadly again, William died from his injuries after being hit by a railway engine on 31 Jan 1939 at Machynlleth whilst employed as a lengthman.
Whilst I am satisfied all the above is liable to be correct, have not been able to find for definite any census entries 1841-1901 relating to the above people, they all appear to be invisible !
It is my assumption that most will be in or around Festiniog, but as with most things, cannot be certain.
Do these details mean something to somebody.

Peter Davies, www.peter_davies.org

Greetings,

I'm researching my dad's (Wilfred B Davies 1912-1994) side of my family. My grandfather Thomas Davies (born 1881 or 1882) died in 1930, he had a brother John M Davies who died in the 1st World War, his third brother David Davies was married to Margaret.
I'm seeking information about David and his children (if any). My dad said he had a cousin in America, could this be David's child?
I'm also looking for information about my grandmother Lucy Emma Allen Griffiths (1885-1964), my dad was very secretive about her.

I look forward to any replies,
Martin (Doc).

William Davies b. 1831, Eng. and George Davies/Davis b. 1837, NY

Greetings.

I am looking for any information on a William Davies, who was born in England - possibly in 1811 - and came to New York ca. 1835.

I have a transcript of a family bible - which I have also seen but was not yet smart enough to take a picture of - that has the following information. From that, it appears that an elder William had the following children.

William Daies b. 1831 Wolverhampton, nearly illegible, looks like Staffordshire), in England
Emma Sophia Davies b. 1833 d. 1836
George Davies b. 1837 baptized Episcopal Church, Sing Sing, NY
Thomas Davies, also baptized Episcopal Chruch, Sing Sing, NY

I am descended from George: who family legend has it was a cattle drover on the Oregon trail. He married a woman from St. Louis (22 yrs his junior), named Dora Henderson. George died in the 1920's in Valois, Schuyler Co. New York, and is buried there with Dora (who we believe went by the name Ellen).

I believe George and William are enumerated together in the 1860 census in Reading, in Schuyler Co., NY. The ages are correct, as are the birth places noted in the census. The surname was spelled "Davis" in this enumeration.

George Davis - spelling change continues - purchased land in Boise, Idaho in 1870. His children, Benjamin Harrison Davis and Homer Davis were born there, and I have a xerox copy of a pencil sketch of the farm that has been handed down through the family. (No idea where the original is.)

Around 1894, the family left Boise and relocated to Schuyler Co., NY.

I would be greatly indebted to anyone who might have information about the elder William, or any info that might lead me to him.

Thanks!

Hello Fellow Genealogists!

I am trying to make a collection of Old DAVIES Photos (with info, as well, to put the photos in "context") as a useful "reference" tool, for us all.

I am collecting/compiling and indexing, any Old DAVIES photos (up thru 1960- but prefer earliest possible) in jpeg/gif format-sent as attachment w/email to me -including as much info known about person(s) IN the photo(s)-

such as:name/dates birth/death/marriage; from whom they descend (if known); whom they married, or names of children; what they did for livlihood,etc.,etc.

I will complete this project w/in the next 2 1/2-3months-and anyone who submits an image to me---will receive a compiled photo booklet and access to the DAVIES Family photo/info website, when it is completed.

Also jpeg/gif images of documents/text are welcome (as again, this adds "context" to the person in photo's life)--

such as: scanned b/m/d certificates;military photos; typed pages of family history; sketches of family tree image; gravesite pix; scanned images of pension/military/citizenship/medical rec-ords; yearbook photos; news clippings;or scans of family bible pages,etc.,etc.

Please make the jpeg/gif no larger than about 8x10 inches, preferably around 5x7 or 7x9-ish, size.

I hope to make this a really helpful TOOL for all of us DAVIESes--(and any re- lated lines you wish to submit--such as those we married-in "with" or of those of surnames that married "into" us!).

Thanks ever so much---Vienna George.....

Email me (w/ text info in body of same email to which is sent as attachment the jpeg (or gif) image) to.....

vienna_loves_genealogy@yahoo.com

We're searching for information on my Grandmother Lilian May Davison (nee Davies) b1920. Her mother Elsie May Davies (nee Ward) died 1927 in the workhouse in Ross-On-Wye when her kids were very young. They also had 4 sons: William Richard b1919, George Henry b1921, Ernest Manley b1924, Alfred Norman b1925.

We would dearly love to know what happend to the children, did they go somewhere else to be looked after? 8 years after Elsie's death Manley remarried "the girl next door" Nellie Louisa Francis. Did Nellie help bring up the kids?

This may help us piece together information on Lilian May as she had a daughter Lucy (my Mum) and sadly there is no sign of information on the father...

x

Researching Henry Davies b Dec 1897 Islington/Holloway entry 1b 213 mother Mary father James - can anyone tell me where I can view this record online? Or is anyone else researching this man. He has a brother James who was awarded the Conspicuous Medal of Gallantry Naval in 1917 and was aboard the HMS Carnation when the award took place. James was born Sheffield Sept 1886 entry 9c 584. We have found that the entire family appear on the 1901 census staying with Frank and Sara Jane Taylor in Chatham - at that point the siblings were James, Mary, Albert, John, Henry and Frances Isabella.

We also believe that Henry was a private in the 11th btn East Yorkshire Regiment service no 11/1232 (we have a picture of him in his uniform and the EY Regiment museum curator confirmed the cap badge) and his name features in Hull Pals. My grandfather told me he was a boxer which fits with the fact that the 11th btn was predominantly the Sporting Regiment.

My father also told me that Henry had a brother who won a CGM in WW1 which ties in with the James we have found as he is the only Davies to be awarded that medal in WW1. James service no was 301312 and we would be interested in finding his service records which should show his next of kin (hopefully the father James) and his address at the time of signing up.

We cannot find the family in the 1891 census and would be grateful for any help with this aswell.

Happy to recieve e-mails at eensy99@yahoo.co.uk

Hello,
I'm hoping someone can help me in locating any information prior to 1891 for my 2nd Great-Grandfather David Isaac DAVIES. In 1901 & 1891 censuses, he and his wife/children lived in Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales. He worked as a coal miner. My family's oral history says the Davies family were from Pontrhydyfen, Wales.
He was born Abt. 1858;
-in the 1901 census his birthplace is listed as Abercarne, Monmouthshire
-in the 1891 census his birthplace is listed as Risca, Monmouthshire
My searches have turned up several possible matches for a David Davies born 1858 in Monmouthshire, I'm just not sure which is the correct one.

Below is more information about the family if helpful:
Married Emma HARDY Abt. 1881-1882
Emma was born Abt. 1854 in Sutton, Nottinghamshire, England.
In 1881, Emma HARDY was an unmarried servant in Manningham, Yorkshire, England with her sister Annie HARDY.
-Daughter Hanna born 1882 in Aberaman, Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales
-Son George born 1884 in Aberaman, Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales
-Daughter Mary Jane born 1889 in Aberaman, Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales
-Son David Isaac born 1892 in Aberaman, Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales
-Twins Earnest Bernard & Helena born 10/9/1893 in Aberaman, Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales
-Son Frank born 1897 in Aberaman, Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales
In 1907, the entire family emigrated from Wales to Peoria, Illinois, where David Isaac Davies continued to work as a coal miner; I believe he died between 1910 and 1920 in Peoria, Illinois.

Any and all clues are greatly appreciated!
Cleeve/Pidsley

My paternal grandmother's family surname was Pidsley. Apparently the Pidsley's in my line were traditionally given the 2nd/3rd christian name of Cleeve. The name Pidsley was dropped when my grandmother was young and the name Cleeve was used as their surname instead. My father comes from the Fareham, Hants area so I think my grandmother's family also lived there but they may have come from Devon as I have been informed by a great aunt who lives there that there are a number of Pidsleys in Devon. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who may have any information. Thanks.

Davies of Aberarth Cardiganshire

I am searching my grandmothers maternal side of the family the Davies' who were all from Aberarth Cardiganshire and looking for information on their ancestors. My grandmother's mother was Mary Jane Davies b in Aberarth and her mother was Jane ? who maried David Davies also from Aberarth. Can anyone help me with Jane's surname before she married David and their date of marriage as I cannot find anything in my searches. My father tells me David Davies died on board ship and is buried in France and he came from a large family. My grandmother (Mamgu) married Thomas Hicks and lived in Aberarth soon after they married. I would be really grateful for any help my Dad is in his 80's and I would love to complete his tree.

I am looking for any connections to my great grandmother Elizabeth Ann Davies. I believe the cottage the family lived in is now below water - in a reservoir. Which one I don't know. She was a seamstress or tailoress and used to make her own lace. She married Abraham Mason either in Wales or Dudley Port, Tipton.

She came from a large family and had about 14 siblings. Some emigrated to USA; one of which was burnt to death in a fire in NY, when her nightdress caught on a gas fire.

One sister lived in Kings Heath, Birmingham, married and had a daughter who became an opera singer.

This is all the information I have, but hope that some of it may mean something to someone out there.

Also their daughter Elinor (1797) and Evan Griffiths (1798) they went to the Iron mines (1840) in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire, Wales. They were probably non-conformists.
