Benjamin Davis of London, Kanawha Co., WV

Facts:

Benjamin Davis (supposedly b. June 6, 1879 he "talked" like a Virginian but that does not mean he was born in Virginia) first appeared in the Kimberly area, near Montgomery, WV, around 1910. He then met his soon to be wife, Lucy Ann Chipchase. They were married in 1913 in Kimberly.

Her mother was Mary Elizabeth Mamoran (b. approx. 1870 in England, d. approx 1898> most likely in the Thurmond area of Fayette Co). Mary Elizabeth Mamoran married John Edward Chipchase in 1888 in Kanawha Co., WV. They are both believed to have been hit by a train.

Before 1910 there are two stories concerning the whereabouts and hookup of Ben and Lucy Davis. First, there is the story that Lucy was working in an orphanage in Virginia. While there she met Ben Davis working as a handyman, and it is believed that Ben was an orphan there thus that was all he knew. Second, the most valid story (in my opinion) is that a lady who worked with Lucy in a boarding house in Kimberly introduced them.

Nevertheless, Ben and Lucy had 9 children the first two or three were born in Kimberly, and the other 7 were born in London. There children are as follows:

Emma Bell (Davis) b. 1911 m. Boyd, Sizemore
Frederick Grimm
Mary Elizabeth (Davis) -- Saxton
Franklin Eugene
Ruth Marie (Davis) -- Justice, Hill
Emory Lee
Geraldine Naomi
Marguerite Imogene
James Lyle b. 1931

------------------------------------------------------

OK now the question my entire family has been pondering for over 60 years is, "Where in the World is Benjamin *Franklin* Davis?"

This is really the great mystery of all time for three reason (1) my family does not know anything other than what I mentioned, (2) Ben Davis (to my knowledge) never had a picture taken of him, and (3) HE DISAPPEARED AROUND 1937.

That's right he disappeared. In 1937 he was out of work. So he packed up and supposedly headed for Virginia with the promise that he would return when he found work. Again, I mention three family rumors he was either (1) knocked in the head while leaving Custard Hollow in London, (2) seen at the Mammoth Cave in Montgomery later that night, and/or (3) had a girlfriend who moved and he soon followed ( at the time he was around 50).

And that was the last time anyone in my family had seen or heard of Benjamin *Franklin* Davis. It is twisted I know, but I would greatly appreciate information on all the Benjamin Davis' that have walked the earth for the purpose of elimination.

For me time is running out. As of today (12/31/2003) there are only two of Benjamin and Lucy Davis' children remaining the oldest, Emma, and the youngest, James. I must also mention the loss of Ben and Lucy's daughter, Ruth Marie Davis Justice Hill, she died today.

Finally, I give thanks in advance.

Matthew Davis

madavis32@suddenlink.net

I read up on the DNA test that Ancestry is offereing...it sounds to be the same as the one at "23 and_____"? [whatever the name was] It is NOT the one that needs to be from a MALE descendant.

I just figured I would get my uncle to do it as well...as close to my Dad as I can get.... who would have turned 79 tomorrow

RIP Dad....miss ya!

Harmon Davis III and Nancy Posey

i found the marriage of Harmon Davis and Nancy Posey in the U.S. and International Marriage Records as being in the year of 1824....not 1819 .

so i have 3 children listed as being the children of Nancy Posey Davis ( this is from someone else's research) that are born before the year of 1824

Joseph, b. abt. 1820 S.C.
Lucinda, b. 4 Nov. 1821, S.C. ( Lucinda's marriage to John York is recorded in 1847 in Tuscaloosa Al.)
Mary Ann, b. 27 Feb. 1823 , Ga.

so my question is , was Harmon Davis III married previously or are these children actually Harmon's siblings and the children of Harmon Davis Jr. ???

i have found a Harmon Davis Jr. and Sr. in the 1830 Claiborne Co. Tn. census records.....not Ga. so could there be a different set of Harmon Davis ?

I trace my Davis line to Jefferson Davis (b. 1821) who was married to Catherine Standlee (b. 1823). They lived most of their adult lives in the area of Carroll County, Arkansas.

I manage my mom's DNA account at 23andme. There are a set of utilites at GEDmatch.com that allow you to upload the results of Autosomal DNA testing - the kind 23andme does as well as FTDNA's "Family Finder". I do not know, but I think this is the kind of testing ancestry is beginning to offer. I am hoping the results will be compatible with the others and therefore uploadable to GEDmatch.com for cross-company comparisions. If this turns out to be true, I'd be happy to share kit #'s etc. to compare.

 Hi Sam,

Jesse and Nicy Davis are my 3rd g grandparents, through their son, Samuel Chesley Davis. Family oral history has it, that Nicys maiden name was Nicy June McCarty, and that she got peeved, took the youngest kids, and ended up working in a lighthouse along the Texas coast. Family humor may account for the lighthouse story, as a joke become "fact," and I have no substantiating proof for her last name, only old genealogy notes belonging to an elderly family member, sent to her own mother, from another elderly (also now passed away)family member. I hope to make better copies this summer.

I have just put all the pertinent info. that I have in a Davis Thread. If you have any info, or thoughts on the matter, I'd love to collaborate! Warm Regards, Teco

Searching for Nicy Davis,
I am searching for any information regarding Nicy Davis, the first wife of Jesse Davis. This is the sourced info. that I have. Jesse is my 3rd great grandfather, Nicy, my 3rd great grandmother.

Jesse Davis - b.05, Jan, 1812 Nicy unknown - b. abt. 1819.

Married abt. 1837.Lavaca, Texas

1st known child - Mary Davis - b.1838 d.?

2nd child - Ruth Ann Davis - b.1840 d.?

3rd child - Susannah Nicy - b.1842 d.? married John Swinney

4th child - Prescilla A. Davis - b.1844 d.?
NOTE; Spelling of name varies from census to census, and is mis-transcribed as Rischicha (?) on the 1850 census.

5th child - Samuel Chesley Davis - b.1845 d.1908

6th child - John Henry Davis - b.1848 d.?

7th child - Jesse M(?) Davis - b.1849 d.1870

8th child - James E. Davis - b.1851 d.?

9th child - William J. Davis - b.1854 d.?

10th child - Joseph Davis - b.1855 - d.?

11th child - Martha Davis - b.1858 - d.?

Something confusing happens with the June 4, 1860 Nueces, Corpus Christi, Texas 1860 census,
Nicy is listed in Corpus Christi Texas, with children John, Jesse Jr., James, Joseph, and baby Martha. However, Jesse Sr., Samuel C., and William, are missing.

In the 03, July 1860, Papalote, Bee, Texas census, Jesse Sr., someone named "Mary," but of the wrong age for Mary Jane, but the right age for Nicy, is listed, and children, Samuel, John, Jesse, James, William, Joseph and Martha.

(Samuel Chesley Davis (My gg grandfather) is missing from further family of origin censa, he married Berline Stacy in 1866, and can be found Grayson, Texas.)

The 1870 Census for, lists Jesse Sr., Mary, 2 of Nicys children - William and James, and Marys first baby, Adeline Davis.

Nicy, and children and Martha seem to drop off the charts,, however, I think I may have found them with John Henry Davis,( Nicy, John, Joseph, and Martha, in the 1870 San Antonio, Texas census. Nicy may have been mis-listed as "Nancy" Davis, and her B.P. listed as Texas, however, all of the other info. listed on this census is correct for the Nicy/Jesse Davis connection.

I lose them again after this.

UNSUBSTANTIATED FAMILY STORIES

Family mythology has Nicy becoming peeved, taking the littlest kids, and leaving, to eventually run one of the lighthouses along the Texas coast, but with family humor being what it is, this could a humorous comment-taken-for-fact. There is also a family rumor, that Nicys maiden name was Nicy June McCarty, BUT I HAVE NOTHING TO SUPPORT THIS.
Does anyone have any info.?

My 2x great grandfather, Peter E Davis, was born in Huntingdon Co. Pennsylvania about 1836/37. Davis is listed as the father.

There seems to be 2 men, about the same age, listed with a father named James A. Davis. The only differences are birthplace and mother.

I met the uncle of James E. Davis. His name was Floyd Davis and he was married to a Lillie/Lilly.

The aunt (Lillie) told me James E. Davis had remarried and the couple had 6 children. At the time, the family lived in Illinois.

Any idea how I find, which of these 2 men belong to the Davis in my search?

Madelen

Re: George Washington Davis

I am just now researching the Davis family so you may already have all this information. George Washington Davis b.1816 d. 1880 is the son of Cyrus Davis Jr. b.1788 Halifax Co. NC d.abt.1836 Henry Co. Tn and Sarah Byars b.1798 Halifax and d. 1867 Obion Co. TN. They also had a son Orange in my direct line. The other children are Elizabeth, Edna, Ann or Ann William. The Henry Co. TN deaths from court minutes 1836-1839 show Sarah Davis, guardian for Washington, Elizabeth, Orange, Edney and William. George Byars is the executor. Sarah remarried 1839 to a Barton. Cyrus Jr. witnessed the will of William Byars an attorney who died in 1831. Sarah's father is Nicholas Byars. I believe William may have been his brother. Cyrus Sr. is probably the grandson of Richard Davis. You can just put in the will of Richard Davis in on yahoo search and you can read it. I will be glad to share any information I have found. I am trying to stick to actual documents as many people have Cyrus Sr. confused with Richard Davis's son Cyrus who died in Mercer Ky. And I can see how that would be confusing. My Grandmother told me that her Davis family came from NC. From what I have read in documents the Davis and Byars family worked together laying our roads. My Grandmother showed me a picture of her father or grandfather with a crew of men standing around a piece of equipment pulled by mules and she said they graded roads. After leaving Henry Co. TN they settled in Obion Co. and Weakley Co. TN.
I am not sure who the father of Richard Davis is, but do have some more information on the Byars family.
D.D.B.
