Seek Davis, Floyd, Griggs, Hill & Lunford Descendants of Families Buried in Davis Cemetery No. 2, Cobb County, GA

Seeking to locate living descendants of Reverend Gary [variant spelling: Gary, Geary, George & Benjamin] Davis, 1799-1875, and of his wife, Sarah D. Floyd Davis, 1805-1888, and of the Hill, Griggs, Lunford families related and/or associated with this Davis family, all buried in the Davis Cemetery No. 2, also known as Cobb County Cemetery No. 193; family cemetery previously known as the Davis Hill family cemetery, located on Burnt Hickory Road Tract, in Cobb County, Georgia.

This Davis Hill family cemetery is in the middle of the second year of restoration as an Eagle Scout Project; notification to living descendants of these families has and is still being actively pursued; if you believe you are a descendant of one of these families, please contact H. Davis at Haley@craftersheaven.com. Following restoration this family cemetery will be re-dedicated....

brief history and notes follow:

It is thought this Reverend Gary Davis may have been a son of Richard Davis, born c. 1764, formerly of Union District, South Carolina, and of his wife, Amy Loveless, born c. 1767, but this is still to be documented....

Archival Research and Cemetery Delineation
Burnt Hickory Road Tract
Cobb County, Georgia

Davis Cemetery No. 2
(Cobb County Cemetery No. 193)

“This cemetery is listed as ‘Davis No. 2/Crossroads’ in the 1997 addendum to Cobb County, Georgia Cemeteries Volume II (Elizabeth L. Parker, (Editor) 1991. The cemetery is the resting place of Reverend Gary Davis (1799-1875) and at least seven members of his immediate/extended family. The home of Reverend Davis, which is recognized with a Georgia Historical Marker, is located about 1,000 feet southeast of the cemetery.” Literature and Records Search. Archival Research and Delineation-Davis Cemetery No. 2. November 10, 1997. P: 3.

“The chain of title for the property containing Davis Cemetery No. 2 spans 161 years (1836 to 1997). Documents from the inception of Cobb County [Georgia] in 1832 through 1980 were reviewed. The chain-of-title is short and fairly uneventful due to the fact that few written transactions involving the property were conducted.” Ibid.

“Davis Cemetery No. 2 is located in Land Lot 261, Second Section, District 20. Information located in the Cobb County Deeds and Records Room indicates that this parcel of land first came into possession of the Davis family on October 24, 1836, when Gary Davis purchased all of Land Lot 261 from Enoch Spofford (Deed Book 71:355). For unknown reasons, this transaction was not officially filed until November 14, 1921.” Ibid.

“On November 12, 1889, the administrators of Gary Davis’ estate sold 248 acres of land, including Land Lot 261, to Samuel P. Orr (Deed Book M:168). The two-acre cemetery parcel is excepted in this document. On May 13, 1897, two acres “more or less” near the center of the land lot was deeded by administrators of Gary Davis’ estate for cemetery purposes (Deed Book W:96). This document states that Davis Cemetery No. 2 was known as the ‘Davis and Hill Graveyard’ at that time. A plat dated October 8, 1921 depicting the property of Samuel P. Orr includes all of Land Lots 261 (Plat Book 1:129). A house is shown on the plat near the cemetery location, however no indication of a cemetery was included.” Ibid.

“Although specific documentation could not be traced during the current deed search, the land at some time during the ensuing years was transferred back to the Davis family. On August 25, 1965, Norman H. Davis deeded the land to Norma Maxine Stephens and Lena LaRue Allison (Deed Book 864:1). The property was purchased from Stephens and Allison by F. A. DeCuyper on May 18, 1968 (Deed Book 1040:527). A plat recorded in 1980 indicates that DeCuyper retained possession of the parcel for several years (Plat Book 77:103).” Literature and Records Search. Archival Research and Delineation-Davis Cemetery No. 2. November 10, 1997. P:3-4.

“The Davis Family is represented by at least eight individuals and appear to have used the cemetery for the longest period (1826 to 1910). The Hill family also has at least eight members buried in Davis Cemetery No. 2 spanning 46 years (1852-1898) Other families represented include children of the Griggs family, and single members of the McGriff and Lunford families” Literature and Records Search. Archival Research and Delineation-Davis Cemetery No. 2. November 10, 1997. R. W. Webb & Associates: Cultural Resource Management Consultants. Holly Springs, Georgia, USA. P:3-4.

Archival Research and Cemetery Delineation
Burnt Hickory Road Tract
Cobb County, Georgia

Davis Cemetery No. 2
(Cobb County Cemetery No. 193)

1.
William Davis VA, TN or MO?

Our Earliest Known McGlothlen Ancestors
Don McGlothlen
Surnames: McGlothlen, McLaughlin, McGlothlin Davis, Lewis, , Keeny, Keeney

My earliest known ancestors are the parents of Charles McGlothlen, husband of Jane Davis. Those are John McLaughlin and wife Sarah (Unknown maiden name).

John McLaughlin was born about 1754, he said in Virginia, and his wife, Sarah was about his own age. We know nothing about her parents or exactly when they married.

John was a Revolutionary War private. From his Rev War pension files, we know he and Sarah moved from Caldwell Co, VA (WV) in 1827 to Lafayette Co, MO with his son, John McGlothlin, Jr. (That's how they spelled it.) John Sr. was at that time nearly blind, lame and broke. He died in Lafayette Co, MO on 17 July 1928.

From his probate files, we know that John McLaughlin, Senior left a widow, Sarah, and seven living children when he died. It is not known how many other children, if any, predeceased him. The descendants of two of the children, Charles McGlothlen and Mary (McGlothlen) Keeney are known to have been comprehensively investigated.

What can you find out about the following? John McLaughlin Sr.'s probate file includedthe following among his then living children:

Wm Davis who married Rebecca McLaughlin.

If you are interested in researching the above, send me an Email and I will give you a few 'starters' for your research.

All the Best,
Don McGlothlen,
McGlothlen Family Historian

Mary Winifred Davis abt 1885 Kansas (Parents born in IL & ME)

Hello all:) I am searching for information on Mary Winifred Davis who was born abt 1885. She married William Austin Daughter (born 1879 Iowa). They eventually settled in Minnesota where they had at least two children: Mary abt 1915 and William Austin 1917. William Sr would have died prior to the 1930 census (when his children were young).

Mary Winifred was listed in the Fergus Falls, MN Census 1930 with her children and two lodgers. Her father was listed as being born in Illinois, with her mother born in Maine.

Any assistance is appreciated.

I am trying to track down information on my ancestors, Benjamin Alexander Davis Sr and his wife, Elizabeth Bowen. I know very little, but I will tell you what I do know: Both were born some time before 1758. Benjamin was born in Camden, SC. They married in SC in about 1780. I am descended from their son, Thomas. They must have had another son, Benjamin Jr, but I don't know about any other children. Benjamin Sr died in TN in 1795. I know little else. Can anyone enlighten me? I would also love to know the names of the parents of Benjamin and Elizabeth.

Unknown information for Davis family in Arkansas

I am looking for further information on A.C "Abe" Davis and his wife R.J. "Rachel" White or Maybell (Maybell is listed on grave marker but I cannot confirm that as a name). They are buried in Davis Cemetery in Grapevine, Grant County, Arkansas. The only information I have on Abe's family is that he received his land in Arkansas from pension, and possibly came here with brothers and sisters (not confirmed). I've been able to find him on Jefferson County Arkansas census records which show him and his wife coming from Alabama with several children. I am related to one son, Thomas H. Davis. Thomas and his wife Rebecca L. Garner spent their life in Arkansas as well. If anyone has any information to help me continue research with Abe and Rachel, I would appreciate any contact and gladly share information!
