No apology necessary. It was great to see my grandfathers name, Edgar on that Census. Sad that he has been gone since 1979 - he was a very special man and very much missed.

The 1911 England & Wales census says that your great-grandmother, Ellen Mary DAWE nee RADFORD aka Nellie had 15 children in all, but only 14 were living at the time. I haven't been able to trace all of them -- I think I'm up to 12 or 13 though. Amos senior died in 1914 or thereabouts in Dorse t in England,

I am tracing my grandfathers family tree on my maternal side. My grandfather was Edgar Clifford Dawe b 1905 d 1979 and I was told his father was Amos Dawe. I was also told that my grandfather was the last of 14 children born, not all children survived, his oldest brother was also called Amos.

Hi,

Not sure if there is any cross over yet. I don't have much on the Pearce side as of yet. My grand mother is Ann Pearce, b. 1914 on Change Islands. Her father was Ambrose Pearce, I have no birth or death dates for him. He married Margaret Dwyer. His father was Samuel Pearce, married to Agnes Tates (not sure on the last name yet) I believe they were from the Boyd's Cover area, but no evidence as of yet. Hope to have some from relatives in the next month.

The Rideouts were from Twillingate - Eleanor (1896-1980) specifically, with siblings Elsie, Mary and Claude. She married Charles Fagan.

The Fagans were from either Bay Roberts or Conception Bay South. Looking for Charles (b. 1885), son of William and Elizabeth Dawe.

The Dawes were from around the same area, from what I understand. Elizabeth married William Fagan, and had a son, Charles Fagan.

Hope you can help!

Re: Edwin Albert Bartlett Dawe, Dorset abt 1920

Hi Annie,

I stumbled across your query while doing some research on the Dawe branch of my husband's family, and he has an Edwin Dawe in his family that I wonder might be a connection to your Edwin Dawe.

Our Edwin Dawe was born in 1831. His father's name was Charles Dawe (1806-1856), and his mother was Ann Bartlett (1802-1861). The name Bartlett is used several times within the names of a few of their children.
Our Edwin was one of twelve children. His siblings' names were MaryAnn, William, Charles, George, Harriet, Elizabeth, Emily, Anna, Sarah, Ellen, and ANOTHER Charles.
Now the year 1920 seems like it might be too late to be our Edwin, but perhaps our Edwin could be your Edwin's father or Uncle? I have not done any research into any of Edwin's descendants, because my husband is descended from his brother George Dawe and most of our research was concentrated there.
In our records, MaryAnn, William, and Sarah all have "Bartlett" listed as a middle name. (There might have been more of the siblings with the same middle name, but those are the ones that WE found.)
Anyway, if I come across a connection that seems to match YOUR Edwin for certain, I'll let you know.

Re: Dawes from Stoke Deremell Devon England

Hi Dawn,
Forgive my unfamiliarity with the towns in England, but would Stoke Deremell Devon be near Stoke, St Mary, Somerset?
My husband has Dawe ancestors from Stoke, St Mary, Somerset, and if that is the same area, then I wonder if they might be connected to your Dawes.
Maybe if I give you the names of the Dawes in my husband's line, you could see if any of it matches up with any of your Dawes.

My husband's great grandmother was named Bertha Dawe, and she was born in 1871. She was one of eight children. Her sibling's names were: Emily, Charlotte, Charles, Harriett, Sarah, Frank, and Fanny. (All born between the years 1863-1874) Bertha married Fred Hodder.

Bertha's parents were George Dawe (b 1835 in Stoke) and Mary Jane Tapp (1834-1916). George was one of twelve children (that I know of.) His siblings' names were MaryAnn, William, Charles, Edwin, Harriet, Elizabeth, Emily, Anna, Sarah, Ellen, and ANOTHER Charles. (Yes, there were apparently two Charles's in the same family.) His siblings were all born between the years 1827-1849.

George's parents were Charles Dawe (1806-1856) and Ann Bartlett (1802-1861).
That's as far back as I have.
Hi, all.
My G3 (grtX3)Grandfather was Richard Dawe, married 10 Dec 1832 to Ann Cross. They had my G2 Grandmother Harriet, who was the last of the children to be born in England. The remaining kids were born in Ontario, Canada. I have the marriage cert for Ann & Richard. But I've hit a wall, and can't seem to go further back than that. Neither can I find them in the 1841 census - the last one in which they would have participated before heading west. I have no idea if either Ann or Richard had siblings, and have no idea as to parentage. Any help/insights anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!

small correction re my previous post
Amos Snr was possibly the one registered 1859 in the Dist of Tavistock
This doesn't quite gel with info that he was 1 mos old and shown as born Beer Ferris, Cornwall (sic) in the 1861 census with John and Sarah DAWE at Quay, Maker, Cornwall.

Thought I'd posted separately that I'd checked the Beer Ferris parish registers for Amos (1859/1861) and father John but that post seems to have vanished into thin air.
Unfortunately my BF Parish register fiche stop at 1848.
I did note that there was an earlier Amos, baptised there in 1826 to Roger and Martha DAWE, and that a Rogert DAWE married a Martha FOOT in BF in 1807.
My Isaac DAWE married Betsy METTERS in BF in 1818.
No idea if there is any connection though.
Roger appears to have come from Bridestow, whereas my Isaac came from Lumburn, Lamerton.
Regards
Lorna
http://lornahen.blogspot.com
http://DaweDNA.blogspot.com

Hi namushi,

I have obtained the death certificates for both Amos William and Amos Henry Dawe, as I was unsure of the relationship. It seems they are not directly related.

Firstly Amos Henry Dawe is the son of Richard Henry Dawe and Miria (sic) Alice Griffiths both of Wales and the divorcee of Dora Archer. More info is available if you require it.

Secondly Amos William Dawe was born, as you proberbly know, on 28 Apr 1883 in Cardiff South Wales, he seems to have immigrated to Canada around 1913 residing in BC from about 1918 and never married. He is the son of Amos Dawe from Devonport and Mary Ellen from London (no maiden name stated). Amos died 19 July 1937 while residing at Beaver Road, Royal Oak, Saanich, British Columbia from hemorrhaging from the liver and Bronchitis. He is interned at Royal Oak Burial Park in Greater Victoria, British Columbia.

Copies available with an e-mail address.

Jo

I too am interested in the answer to LostLineage's question namushi.
I had a quick dig around on Amos (b 1883) and note that although he was born in Cardiff, it looks like his father Amos was born in Devon (Beer, or Beertown).

Given that it also looks like Amos was the son of a John and Sarah DAWE, and in one census John is shown as born Beer Ferris, I'd assume that this line is indeed a Devon or Cornwall line, and that Amos Snr was possibly the one registered 1859 in the Dist of Tavistock (which covers the Parish of Beer Ferris - and is in the same approximate area as my DAWE family).
Regardless, should you be in contact with any living direct male line DAWE down the end of it, the DAW(E) DNA project would welcome their participation.
Harry's "cousin John" is patiently awaiting a Devonshire match.
http://dnasurnames.info/lineages/p910.htm (if these Johns are one and the same)

Regards
Lorna
Admin
DAWE Surname DNA Project admin
http://DaweDNA.blogspot.com
I'm looking for any information on Amos William Dawe senior, who was born in Britain and emigrated to Canada. He died in Royal Oak in British Columbia.

Also, his son, Amos William Dawe junior who was born in Singapore to local mother.

AWD junior built a business empire in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong in the 1960s, which went bust in the 1970s.

My grandmother was Mabel Dawe from Coneption Bay/Long Pond area. I've been told that there is a connection with a Moses or Isaac Dawe and a Butler...could be a long shot
