It looks like Roach was short for Rocheal 1852-1924. He had two wifes. With Laura Norris (1875) he had 7 children. With Mary Knuckles (1650-1920)he had 12 children. one was named Roacheal also and was born in 1878.

The first Rochael Dawkins is in my tree as the father-in-law of Mary Emma Dawkins (1890-1980) who was married to Cleveland Dawkins (1884).

This is not a direct line for my tree. It appears to be an in-law relationship. I did not see parents for Rocheal .

This is so interesting! Wish I could add something to the discussion but my "Dawkins" relatives lived across the river in Dawkins, Fairfield county. I've been concentrating my efforts on my "Thompson" relatives there whose in-laws were "Dawkins". That is, my great, great grandfather, Ruben Thompson, was married to Martha Dawkins (my great, great grandmother).

My father is Pete Dawkins, he was named after his grandfather Pete Dawkins who is from Alabama. So Pete Dawkins is also my great grandfather. I have heard that he was conceived from a white slave owner who had "sex" with a female slave. Could be we are related. Regards.

Hello, Mack was the name of my grandfather's brother. My grandfather's name was Walter Monroe Dawkins. Melvin and B.C. are names my father mentioned to me. I'm sure we are related and I have some very curious information about Mack and Walter's father. I'm looking for descendents of Mack. If you are interested in talking, please reply. I realize that this is a very old post but I'm hoping that you are still on Ancestry.com and that we can talk.

I am desendant from Kate Dawkins 1802-abt1870. She also had children by William Dawkins along with Milsey and Rosetta who are mentioned in the message regarding the reunion. My family is Dawkins-Hill who are primarily from Fishdam/Carlisle in the early years. I have it identified in my public tree here on ancestry. I also have letters from the son of Cisely Dawkins who gives the history of the family. I have oral history from my Aunt who was the granddaughter of Randle and Phoebe Dawkins (Phoebe had about 9 siblings).

Randle was a son of the slavemaster William Dawkins 1790-1972. He was the blacksmith on the plantation and carried a lot of weight.

Research indicates that William's father was Thomas Dawkins II born 1764 in VA. His father was Thomas I born 1729 in Northumberland, VA. His father was John Dawkins I born 1705 also in Northumberland, VA. His father was George Dawkins I born 1679 also in Northumberland, VA. the family likely came from England a generation or two before George I.

I attended this family reuion when it met in Washington a few years ago, but only one person seem to know the connection of my family both through William Dawkins but also through Cisely Dawkins 1874-1957 and her son Gus (GE) Dawkins 1910-2001.

Cisely is buried in the family cemetary at Paradise AME church that was built with the proceeds from the land settlement from the slavemaster- William Dawkins. Cisely is my great-grand Aunt. Kate, as I mentioned above is my 3rd great grandmother.

Lewis Hill was a signer of one of the legal documents regarding the will of William Dawkins. Lewis Hill (1856-1946) was the brother of Pompey Hill 1857 who was my mother's grandfather. I am looking for information on the Hlll side as well.

This is probably more than you wanted to know, but please share as much as you have that might shed some light on the Hills as well as Kate/Katy and her children.

I understand that Kate, Millsey and Rosetta came from a place called Maddox with William. I am also looking for Maddox.

Hello, I was very surprised to see this message, about a up-coming family union for 2013. I know you have seen my tree on this site for some more Dawkins and Ducketts as well. You were right about the size of the Dawkins surname, and how many families it has been a part of.

I was very impressed with the size of your tree of the Dawkins; as you have seen on my tree, I am a Woodson, Dawkins, Ducketts, and a Robinson, and have never been to any family reunion given by any of them. I finally got invited to a Robinson reuion for the first time last year in Sept., but got the info to late to go. This year should be different, because I have already been told of a Woodson going to be in Myrtle Beach, and a Chick reunion in the Chicago. You are right about the Dawkins and Ducketts for 2013, it will be a huge one. I would plan to be there, once I am aware of where it will be. my personal email is, woodysbravo96@aol.com Feel me to keep me informed.

James(Woody)Woodson

My great great grand father bore his name and looks like he was mulatto from the family pictures. The white Rueben Dawkins originated from England, enter the US through MD/VA before they moved to Newberry, NC for a bit as tabacco farmers. They then moved to Jasper, GA before locating to Russell Co, AL. White Rueben died in 1865 Before the end of the civil war I believe.

William Dawkins of Deal, Kent

Help!

I've hit a brick wall with my 4x ggrandfather William Dawkins.

He was employed and recorded in the 1861 census as a a Master Mariner onboard the Sea Nymph in Greenock East, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

The census says that he was born circa 1824 in Deal, Kent.

When he was 23, he married Eliza Laybourn on 18 Dec 1847 in Hartlepool, Durham, England. Father's name - George Dawkins, Occupation of father - Farmer (from Williams marriage certificate).

He died 22 Jan 1863 in At sea (onboard The Cimbria)

My problem is, I cannot find/confirm any record of his birth, his mother, his father's birth/marriage/death or any records prior to his wedding in 1847.

Any help from you will be gratefully appreciated.

Paul

I learned soon after my original message that my Great-Grandfather Hester Emmitt Dawkins' father was Allen Dawkins, not Mose/s Dawkins. Apparently, our Dawkins ancestors were owned by George Dawkins who moved from AL/GA/SC area to Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana. Our Dawkins slave ancestors remained on or near the Farmerville Plantation in Union Parish, Louisiana. However, since Mose Dawkins and his descendants were owned by the same white Dawkins slaveholding family (one of George Dawkins' family members) many, if not all, of the Dawkins slaves could still be related by blood. I regard you as a "new" cousin :)

My direct email is parkin24@afrigeneas.net. So far they are able to come up with 17 children. Eddie will make 18. By chance do you know Eddie's mothers name? Feel free to contact me directly.

Thank you for responding. Your information could be a really helpful lead. According to Bettie/Betsy's death record she listed her maiden names as Giles and her parents as Sallie Beatty and Abe Giles. In the 1870 Census Betzie Giles is listed as 11 years old living with her mother Sallie, Sallie's new husband/companion Prince Gist and several other children. I think it may be just a coincidence that your Betsy also had a mother named Sallie. However, I don't know Sallie's maiden name. Beatty was the name of another husband she had after Betsy was born.

I will continue to search and post on the board if I find anything new. Please let me know if you run across Stewart Dawkins. Thanks again!

Re: Stewart or Dawkins

I have checked my tree and find that I have a Betsy Dawkins (1852-) who was living with Katy Dawkins (1802-1870). They can be found together in the 1870 census. It is hard to tell what the relationship is between Katy and Betsy, but it might have been that Betsey was the grand daughter of Katy with either Sallie (1835) or Francis (1833) being the mother.
Katy (1802-1870) was one of the slave women who had children with William Dawkins (1790-1872) the slavemaster. Her son Randle was one of the children of William and Katy and my great-great grandfather.

I have now placed Steward Dawkins (1837) in my tree with a question mark as the husband of Betsy. The 1880 census has him as being born in 1842 and his wife is Betsy. The 1990 census has her name as Betty. This Steward and Betsy had a son named Jimmie (1878). In 1990 there are four more children listed. Jimmie is the first child listed with them as you have indicated. There is a 15 year difference in their ages. They are listed as married in both the 1880 and 1890 census. Some of this runs parallel to your information. I have now expanded my tree. thanks

Stewart or Dawkins

I am looking for African American Stewart Dawkins from the Spartanburg or Braytonville or Draytonville, South Carolina area. He is identified in the 1880 census married to Betsy and born around 1837 (+/-5). After that there is no trace of him in the 1870 census.

I found a slave inventory on a different website that listed a James Stewart that was purchased in Charleston by NB Dawkins from Spartanburg in 1854. Stewart Dawkins first oldest child with Betsy Dawkins was named James. That is a possible lead, but there is no way to verify this without knowing what happened to him after the Civil War.

My theory is that he was a single man living either on his own or with another family during the 1870 census, going by either James Stewart or Stewart Dawkins. Please respond if you have come across any information on either name.

Please see my 12 Oct 2011 post regarding William Dawkins. The name John P. Sartor is also in my tree in connection with Phoebe Dawkins Hill (1860-abt1901). perhaps you have information that can help with with the Hill and Sartor part of my family. Thanks

This is an update of my 2003 posting--There are several of us on these genealogical pages who are looking for information on the William Dawkins who appears in the 1870 Census in Union County SC (Fishdam Township).
This William Dawkins was 80 years old at the time of the 1870 census which would mean that he was born about 1790. It lists the place of birth as South Carolina. In his household was someone named Eber Smith age 53. Both said they were farmers. William owned the land.
William’s parents were Thomas Dawkins II, (1764-1839) and Sarah Oester (1763-1849). There were 10 or 11 children. Among them were this William Dawkins (1790-1872), Thomas Dawkins III (1803-1832) and James Dawkins (1796-1845). James was the father of Spencer Morgan Dawkins (1833-1899).
Spencer Morgan Dawkins, nephew of William, was the executor of his Uncle’s will when he died in 1872. This information is in my tree. My ancestry.com relationship button says that William Dawkins is my 3rd great grandfather. This is as a result of having children with slave Katy (1802-1870). Katy died before William and is not listed in his will as are two other slave women, Rosetta and Milley, and their children. The generations of William go back to George Dawkins (1679-1729) in Virginia. I have not yet been able to pin point exactly where in Virginia, but it looks like somewhere near or at the Northern Neck—Northumberland.
My real journey is to find where William acquired Katy who was my 3rd great grandmother. It is said that William Dawkins traveled to a place called "Maddox" or Mattox" Virginia. I am not sure if this is Appomattox or some other place that no longer exist with that name. Sorry for this long message, but we seem to be going back and forth about the parentage of this William Dawkins.
I forgot to mention I have Rueben Dawkins Family bible. It was published in 1902 So it is more than 109 years old and it is a african methodist edition. It contains the written family tree with births, deaths and marriages. I have resently moved to the Atlanta metro area so I plan on visiting Jasper Georgia someday to see if there is more history to discover.

We have traced my husband's family, Dawkins, to Nathan Dawkins, who was born in 1855 in Alabama and staed that his parents were both born in Georgia. The family is African American.

Nathan Dawkins married Ella and they had children.

Russell County, Alabama, lists Reuben (spelling REUBEN) Dawkins as having 59 slaves in 1860. Russell County Slaveholders in 1860, Beat 1, page 19.

Then their are SURNAME MATCHES AMONG AFRICAN AMERICANS ON 1870 CENSUS:Dawkins, 191,21,0,12,11,0. i do not understand it all but i found it searching for Slaveholders Census in 1860 in Alabama.

It also suggests reading more records personally. this is as far as I have gotten.
