I've been working on your letter off and on all day. I'm picking up from where I left off over 3 yrs ago so it's really refreshing my memory. It's wonderful that you know so much about the family! While I continue and finish your letter, be thinking about whether there is even a remote possibility that there could be one more child after David (if I remember right he was the youngest) who may have left home to fight in the French-Indian War and kept on going south into VA after the war. Thanks!

I look forward to hearing from you. Perhaps you descend from one of Thomas Jr.'s brothers. The record on Thomas Jr.'s sons is pretty clear. David was executed by the colonials in 1780 in Philadelphia. Thomas apparently died as a young man, as he never appears on the tax or census records, and is not mentioned in his mother Margaret's estate (1805), his brother William's estate (1806), or his sister Jane's estate (1846.) The heirs to William Dawson were his unmarried sisters and his male first cousins. So, no sons from any of them.

:( I think that is the worse genealogy news I have ever heard. I have always felt bad for others who have daughtered out and now it has happened to the one family I was most interested in. So...for anyone reading this, consider your own current family. If you have very few direct male relatives alive, consider getting their DNA so you'll have it for a while till you're really interested in pursuing it.

I will write you privately as to why I thought these families might be related, but without DNA I would never claim it on the net. Family trees built on circumstantial evidence can't be erased from the internet even though they are proven wrong by DNA or documented sources.
Thanks so much for this response even if it's not the one I was looking for.

This is an addendum to my previous post. Just discovered that Miss Jane Dawson (d. 1846) is buried in the Cowan plot at St. John's Episcopal Cemetery, Compass, West Caln Township, PA. But the time of her death, the old Dawson cemetery had apparently fell into disuse, and so Jane was buried with her mother's people at St. John's.

I was wondering if anyone had asked you to look up my 3rd ggrandfather William E. Dawson b. 1845 Virginia, his parents were from Ohio. He was married to a Susan McFadden. I have him in Virginia (now WV) and Ohio from 1860-1880.

Hello:

I have a bit of a mystery going on and thought this would be the place to ask for help.

In the 1850 Edinburg, Portage Co., OH, census Adaline BEACH, 10, b. Ohio, is with William and Margaret (Hampton) DAWSON (my relatives).

In the same census, Andrew BEACH, 8, b. Ohio, is two doors from Adaline with the Anson and Annette TUTTLE family.

In the 1850 Atwater, Portage, OH, census Lucy A BEACH, 8, b. Ohio, is with the Henry T. and Orpha WILLSEY family.

In 1860, Adaline, school teacher, is with the Jacob and Editha (Ross) DAWSON family (my relatives) in Wyoming, Otoe County, NE.

An AdEline, same vitals and also a school teacher, is also found with the Joshua and Lucinda DAWSON family in the Ross, Fremont County, IA, census. This is likely the same woman; censuses were taken more than a month apart. (And my g-g-uncle, S.A. HATHAWAY is living next door!)

Nothing definitive for Lucy or Andrew in the 1860.

I am trying to sort out all three children, especially Adaline as she is with my family in the 1860.

I have been unable to satisfactorily sort out the DAWSONs but feel they must all be connected (Jacob and Joshua likely brothers and born in Ohio).

Does anyone have Adaline, Lucy, or Andrew BEACH? Or William (1787 - 1868), Jacob (1820 - 1869), or Joshua (46 in the 1860) DAWSON?

Any help very much appreciated!

Hi there

I'm looking for my fiance's family. They are Dawson's from India but came to South Africa as indentured labourers probably some time in the late 1800's. I've also been told that there was a Canadian in the family. The canadian from were the Dawson surname is apparently from is my fiance's(26years old) great, great, great, great, great, great (that's 6) grandfather. That should place his time of birth some where in the mid to late 1700's. I'll try and get more information but that's all I have right now.

Hi there - am afraid the book only goes to the late 1800's, so your Joshua isn't in there, BUT, I did look around for info.
I first found his burial on FindAGrave for Pasq. Co. NC, and his stone did say 1903-1932.
Then I found his birth record showing he was b. 2 Mar 1903 to Joshua White Dawson and Clara Bray.
I found him in the 1810, and 1820 censuses without any problem.
I found who I believe to be his parents in the 1930 census of Pasq. Co. NC indexed as JUSHIA DAROSS at Ancestry (w/ wife Clara and dau. Hellen).
I found his marriage record to Blanche Sutton in 1923, but no death record for her.
Of interest is the 1930 census of Chesapeake, Elizabeth City, Virginia where there is a Joshua Dawson listed as a private at the military base. However, it shows his parents as being born in VA, and he in NC (your Joshua's parents are shown in census data to be born in NC).
Regardless, there is a record showing a Joshua Dawson, Jr. departing for Honolulu on 31 July 1930 on the ship President Pierce.
Is there anything else you can share about him, his wife, or children that might help?
All my best,
Marlene

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have been desperate to find my grandmother's parents. She is the reason I began my family search back in November in the first place, and I hate blank spaces on the family tree. I'm also preparing a history book an ancestry and would love to fill in all the spaces. And - as you can see, I LOVE old pictures. I really appreciate your help with this and I agree with you that this is my Sarah, especially since my Dad always referred to her as "Sallie." Sure wish I had asked him more questions. My Grandfather was quite a character. Keep up the good work. It's wonderful that you are helping people find their family members. I'll see if I can find out anything about the bank in Afton. I do know that when he moved the family to Inverness, Citrus County, Florida (where I was born) he was into real estate. He married his 3rd wife when he was in his 80's.

Me again-
Just an observation or two...
George Abbott was married to Amelia by a Justice of the Peace of the township of Sarcoxia in the county of Jasper MO. Marriages were generally performed in the county where the bride resided.
I’ve learned that when the time came for giving birth, a LOT of women went home to their parents to have the children, and have grandma look after the rest of the kids. Point being, if Amelia Coats, dau of Clement is your Sarah’s mother, I think her (Sarah) being born in Sarcoxia would be likely.
Also – I had to look at some maps to get my bearings. I was surprised by the direct routes from Afton OK into MO. From Afton to Newtonia is under 50 miles on Rt60, and George Abbott’s P.O. in 1870 was Newtonia.
Another observation, or perhaps line of questions- is what bank did Albert work for ??? Did they have a branch near to George Abbott ??? I’m thinking perhaps Albert did some training at a nearby branch of the bank ?
All in all, I can’t find anything to abuse the suppositions on who your Sarah was. I got nowhere with Missouri City TX.
By the way – I saw you had some great pictures on-line – GOOD JOB !!!
All my best,
Marlene

Let me look at this a while longer - the Missouri City is a new tangle...
My husband is a Dawson, and his line can be traced back to dirt! Very definately European male genes in that line of Dawsons. The line starts here in Maryland & settles in Missouri. Google "HUNTER-DAWSON HOUSE, Cape Gerardeau MO" - that's my hubby's family.
Anything else you can think of that might help in the quest?

I was wondering if it was a mistake. It is handwritten and FamilySearch.org interpreted it as Sarah Cootes but I think it was meant to be Sarah Coates. Yes the informant was my grandfather. That's why I thought maybe the sister named Sarah had helped raise my grandmother and he used her name. My grandmother died the year before I was born and of course I never knew her and only recently found the only picture my Mom had of her. My Dad was the baby of the family and very close to her and she also died pretty young. My Grandfather married 2 more times before he died at 91. I have wondered how they met also. He was born in CA and moved to Afton OK and another problem is that the death cert says she was born in Sarcoxie MO and the census says Missouri City in Texas. I know they had 7 children. I have lots of info on the Dawsons and nothing on the Abbotts. My Dad had one Cherokee grandmother and one German grandmother. I hope these are the correct Abbotts because I can trace them back to the 1700's. What would you suggest? Also, I am curious. What is your connection to the Dawsons? Are we related?

I can't say that I'm 100% positive - but I'm pretty sure of what I've found. As for names on death certificates... I love to tell the story of my eldest sister, born in 1948. Her birth record shows my mother's name as LOUISE...My Mom's name is ELIZABETH !!!
An honest error could have been made when the info was being taken down, or perhaps it was one of those "I think her mother's name was...and she was from....I think"
Was it her husband as the informant? Anyone else was likely not to really know. Her children were away from her side of the family all of their lives.
What I'd like to know is how & where Sarah Abbott met her husband - any family tales ???
Thank you so much for your help. I have been searching for my grandmother's parents for 3 months. I had actually researched Amelia Coates because I saw her name on another family tree. The problem is that Sarah F. Abbott Dawson's death certificate (which I paid to get) shows her mother as Sarah and born in Sarcoxie MO. Of course there are several George Abbotts born in TN. To further complicate the search, Amelia had a younger sister named Sarah who was actually born in MO. Amelia was born in Michigan. On Family Search this is shown on the 1850 census. Since Amelia died so young I wonder if her sister Sarah helped raise my Sarah. I do know that George Abbott is shown as her father on her death cert and also on the Cherokee Indian Roll Card and was apparently still living at that time. Any further thoughts? I want to be very sure since they are my grandparents. I have hit a roadblock and appreciate your help more than you will ever know. This is the info I need to complete our family tree.

I found quite a bit, but this isn't in order (sorry, was taking notes as I went along). I don't think Sarah's mother's name was Sarah....

See George Abbott in the 1880 census of Newton Missouri. He’s there with his 2nd wife named Ada Taubland who he married on 1 Jun 1879 in Newton county Missouri.
Your Sarah is listed as Sallie, age 5 in this census.
There’s also a marriage record in Jasper county Missouri for George Abbott and Amelia Coats on 20 Aug 1856.
In the 1850 census of Lawrence county Missouri are TWO George Abbott’s (b. 1832 TN), in the HH of Benjamin (b. 1802 in VA) and Elizabeth Abbott (b. 1799 in NC). I don’t know if this is an error, or if there’s actually 2 (cousin ?).
There’s a marriage record for Benjamin Abbot and Elizabeth Wood dated 19 Oct 1819 in Stokes NC:
Groom: Benjamin Abbott
Bride: Elizabeth Wood
Bond date: 19 Oct 1819
Bond #: 000136968
Level Info: North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868
ImageNum: 008860
County: Stokes
Record #: 01 001
Bondsman: Pettus Priddy
Witness: Matt R Moore, C

The 1860 census of Lawrence County Missouri has George and Amelia ABBIT with mother Elizabeth in the HH, as does the 1870 census in Newton County Missouri.

Of note is Armistead Abbott who married Francis Priddy (on 23 May 1797) and are in the 1820 census for Stokes NC. Armestead was b. 1775 in Maresville VA, the son of Benjamin Abbott and Nancy Anne Brown. Francis Priddy (b. 1778 Hanover VA) was the daughter of George Priddy and Penelope Ann Davis.

The 1850 census of Jasper Missouri shows Amelia M. Coats (b. 1838 in Michigan), dau of Clements and Elizabeth Coats. Clements & Elizabeth Coats were b. in Delaware.
George and Amelia Abbott named one of their children Clement.
Hope this helps,
Marlene

My father, Waymond H. Dawson was Albert and Sarah's son. They were both born in 1874 and he was born in CA and she in MO and they married and lived in Afton, OK for many years. Both died in Citrus County Florida. I have her death cert that shows her father was George Abbott and mother was Sarah Cootes (or Coates). I can't find her parents. He was born in TN and she in MO.
