Hi Claire
I have been researching this family for a friend in the USA who is descended from Ruth Deacon daughter of Thomas Deacon and Sarah Dudley of Chalgrave. Ruth was born in 1856 at Leighton Buzzard district in Bedfordshire(Sep Q Volume No: 3B Page No: 367)and was in the USA by 1865 age 9 so I assume her parents went too. I also have this from the 1851 census before Ruth was born:-
DEACON, Thomas, Head, Married, M, 31, 1820, Coach Builder (Employg 6 Men), Eversholt
Bedfordshire,
DEACON, Sarah, Wife, Married, F, 31, 1820, , Hockliffe
Bedfordshire, ,
DEACON, Matilda, Daughter, , F, 4, 1847, , Berkhampstead
Hertfordshire,
BARNES, Charles, Aprentice, Unmarried, M, 18, 1833, Coach Builder's App, Chesham
Buckinghamshire,

Piece:1756, Folio:258, Page:16 Registration District:Leighton Buzzard, Civil Parish:Linslade, Municipal Borough:, Address:New Road, Linslade, County:Bedfordshire,
I can put you in touch with my friend, also Ruth, if you wish.
Regards Christine Wilson

Do you have any details of Sarah (Sarah Ann?)Deacon, born circa 1854, not sure where as one census says Manchester another Wakefield. She had a son Albert, born 1873 in the Wakefield workhouse. She later married Mark Pinfield. I don't know the names of her parents, but she was my great grandmother. I would be so grateful of any info you may have. Thank you
Shirley

Wow! That message I last posted was in 2009!!
Thank you for contacting me. Well there may be a lot of Deacons in Bradford, but I have found only a few that I know are related. I did find the first cousin to my mother, William Deacon, son of Hubert Deacon, son of William, son of James. I wrote to him and his sisser, Betty Deacon Claque several times and sent photos but never did directly hear back. A daughter did contact me by email though, so I have a little information. Both William and Betty died within the past three years, unfortunately, both in their 6o's.
I have been in touch with Jan Lawson though-in fact she came to Canada with her daughter a couple of years a go, so we met for lunch. It was lovely to actually meet someone connected to my mom's family.
You can email me at dmsereda@shaw.ca if you like. I would love to be in touch. There are two more distant cousins in England that I have been in contact with-but not for a long time.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Diana in Canada
Well do look at my tree --it is under Wilson Ritts...several more names with Deacon in there as well. You will probably find it easy enough.
I have a lot of info there, plus on my pc, where I use Legacy Family Tree software...so I have lots of sources that aren't necessarily on Ancestry. For example-the death dates and certificates for Joseph Deacon and Mary Oldfield Deacon.
Also if you haven't already found it, there is an excellent site for Calverley....lists of births, marriages, deaths...and the St Wilfred Cemetery internments. The site is free and is a goldmine. I found the site yearsago when the fellows were just starting to list the parish records, and so was able to print out actual pages of the registers. Since then it has become more sophisticated with a good search engine...so do check it out. I will look for the URL if you can't find it easily. I think it was under Calverley Information..like a municipal site. I found many Deacons there...Joseph and Mary Deacon are both buried in St Wilfred's.
I just checked my bookmarks for the site and find it is quite different..it is under 'finding Aid...looks like a message board..I don't recall it looking like that. Well there is a place to do searches so maybe it is still useful. Anyway I am happy to help...would love to be able to get further back than Joseph Deacon and Mary Oldfield with some certainty.
Bye for now
Diana in Canada
Hi Jan,

Nice to meet you, and thanks for your offer of help. Are you in Yorkshire? We are in Rhyl, N.Wales but Iain is from Bradford where the Deacons have been for many generations. His mother was the late Joan Deacon, one of 9 children in 1920s and many of them are still alive, so we shall be pumping them for their memories of grandparents James Deacon and Sarah Ann Newcombe, son of Joseph Illingworth Deacon and Elisa Hutchinson, son of James and Ann Wilby. Iain has so many first cousins in Bradford that it's hard to keep count - lol.

Iain's younger brother Stuart Close is also buried at St Wilfred's, he moved to Calverley 15 years ago. None of us knew we had ancestors there until very recently. We shall be having a look around the old graves later this year. Stuart's widow, Maureen is going to have a look around very soon. If I find anything, I'll send you a pic.

I'm also interested in going further back from Joseph D and Mary Oldfield.

I'm going to be a bit busy with other things for the next two weeks, so I'll catch up with viewing your tree etc. asap.

Cheers

Jill

Hello,
My name is Michelle Deacon Carpenter. Edwin Deacon was my great-grandfather. His son Henry Deacon was my grandfather. The family moved to Houston, TX when they came to the U.S. I know of four Deacon children, Cyril Maurice Rhys Deacon (b. 1893), Winefred Deacon (b. 1896), Henry Arthur Deacon (b. 1901) and Lula Deacon (b.1904). My grandfather Henry Deacon was a Merchant Marine. He came to port a lot in Philadelphia where he met my grandmother. They had a son Henry Deacon Jr.(my father)and lived in Philadelphia. My grandfather died in 1969 at a VA hospital in New York. He is buried in Trevose, PA. Emily Deacon (my great grandmother) died in Texas either Chrismas eve or Christmas day 1954.

Hi Folks,

I'm just about to get started on my husband Iain's "Deacon tree" and see that you have ancestors in common. He is also from Bradford and a descendent of James and Ann Wilby down their son Joseph's line. Iain's grandfather was Hector Herman Deacon (city rat catcher) DOB 1902. He was a son of James DOB 1867, who was a son of Joseph 1846.

I know that each generation had approx 10/12 children, so there will be a lot of Deacons in Bradford by now - lol.

Cheers

Jill

There is only one Deacon mentioned in Howard Morton Brown's book,'Lanark Legacy' and it is in a poem called "Professional Men"
"Messrs. A. Morris, Deacon, Fraser, Shaw,
McMartin, Buell, Beynon, practise Law,
The second soon will be a Judge--
An honour none to him will grduge;
Indeed, I hope he yet may be
Chief Justice Deacon, LL.D.. . . " [p.82,84]

My Deacon connection (Anna) married William Moorhouse in Ireland (1750). A Moorhouse descendant is also mentioned on Page 77: "Moorhouse collects our tax."
Beckwith was a township in Lanark. These two men may have lived in Perth, Ontario, county seat of Lanark.

I'm hoping that your George Deacon's grandfather is a sibling of my Anna Deacon. Do you know?

Elaine
My ancestor Anna Deacon was married in 1750 to William Moorhouse in the diocese of Ferns. I'm wondering if Anna was a sibling of John Deacon, the father of Thomas Deacon (b. 1750) who married Jane Shirtcliff about 1770.

Descendants of Anna Deacon and William Moorhouse bearing the Moorhouse name came to Elizabethtown near Brockville, Ontario,Canada, as early as 1819 and some settled in Beckwith Township which is further north. I have extensive information on these people.
