John sorry only just came back to this website. I don't have my family history research its in storage at present This family were a bit complicated I think as there are brothers and sisters marrying into both families Deakin and Hollins. From what you say daughter would mean Harriet is Joseph and Hannahs daughter and her husband William is their son in law. You are correct in that I believe Ann Deakin and Harriet Deakin married the Hollins brothers ! But there is an instance I think where one female Deakin marries twice and both of the men are Hollins. This has probably confused the issue as I say am unable to get to my research unemployement caused me a move up country and my home is in boxes.

Sharon,
Hi, hope you are keeping well. I'm still having fun researching various family branches and have recently returned to this one. Would like your thoughts on this if possible. I had thought that Ann and Harriet Deakin were sisters who had married William and benjamin Hollins. However in the 1851 census I have a William and Harriet Hollins as daughter and son in law living with Joseph and Hannah Deakin (Ann's parents are William & mary). I suspect that they are in some way related as there can't have been many Deakin families living in Rugeley at that time but haven't gotten to exact relationship as yet.

Thanks
Tony

Do you have Lydia Deakin who was Lydia Martin, sister of Robert Martin? His wife, Emma Gardiner Martin, was visiting Lydia in the 1841 Cheshire census. Robert, Emma and their children lived in Liverpool, Lancashire. Thank you. Shirley Smith

My maternal grandmother's family's surname was Deakin and at the moment I am trying to gather information about the above named. He was a lieutenant in WW1. I have the information about his marriage to Dorothea Burrows. I think he was married to someone called Ethel prior to his marriage to Dorothea and that he also married again after his divorce from Dorothea. Does anyone have any information aboutthis relative? Thanks.

George A Deakin

Update to original message.

Definitely Deakin not Deacon and probably George Albert Deakin b Smethwick (b Reg King's Norton 1882 Q1 d Reg Worcester 1950 Q3) who was an Army schoolmaster and during the mid/late 1920s a headmaster in Worcestershire.

Original Message

I have a late 1906 football team group postcard for which I can identify 7 of the 11 players. I can name two more who are definitely on it while there are three possibilities for the other two.

One of the two from three is George A Deakin/Deacon (usually seen spelt with the “ki” but also occasionally with the “co”) who was in Colchester from late 1905 until early 1908.

He played for and captained the town football club and was reported to have come from Saltley College, which was a teacher training establishment in Birmingham. He left for India in January 1908 but doesn’t appear to be a soldier, although he could possibly be a military schoolmaster. January 1908 doesn’t coincide with a troop movement from the local garrison.

Any descendents who recognise his details and may be able to help with identification are invited to contact me and I will forward copies of the unknown faces
I wonder if anyone can help with this query I have. My grandfather’s parents had 5 children, according to the 1911 census (GR).

Parents: Walter Deakin, DOB 1871 and Sarah Elizabeth Dearden, DOB 1873 m 1894

Children:

Sarah Elizabeth Margaret Deakin, DOB 1896 (on both the 1901 and 1911 shows as living with her grandparents Wilfred and Sarah Dearden (on 1901 census surname recorded as Dorkin)) m 1916 to Wokins?

Wilfred Stanley Deakin (my grandfather), DOB 1897, DOD 1965 married 3 times, Winifred Law, Minnie Isaacs (grandmother) and Doris Green

Harry Deakin, DOB 1905, DOD 1978

Walter Roy Deakin, DOB 1 Mar 1910 m 1934 Lilian May Hill DOB 1 Mar 1911

This is where it gets fuzzy, my mum remembers a Mary, who was younger than her father but don’t know anything else.

The other query is on the 1911 census it states 3 sons living at home, Stanley, Harry and Ronald, aged 1, nothing about Walter Roy or Mary.
Dear magalloway. I've been doing a bit of research around Francis and Sarah's family in the last few days. Ran across this intriguing paragraph:

Francis Deakin, aged 61, who claimed cousinship with Mr. Deakin, M.L.A., of Victoria, has died at Tocumwal.
Barrier Miner (Broken Hill) Saturday 29 April 1899

I've got a full list of his children and his marriage certificate if you'd like it. Send me an email to rlindsay_179@hotmail.com

I'm particularly looking for another son of his, Joseph, of whom there seems to be no trace, apart from a newspaper report.

Robert Lindsay
Her father was Francis John Deakin d.1899 in Tocumwal. One of my great-grandmother's many siblings was named Charlotte, another Frederick. My gg's parents were pioneers travelling from Victoria to the rich grazing lands opening up at the time along the Murrumbidgee River in NSW. Starting to join the dots.
I'm looking for any info on Ralph and Hannah Deakin both born circa 1783 in Hanley. i have found their records on the 1841 and 1851 census. I have also found Ralphs death in 1856 but cannot find any records of Hannah. I beleive she may have been the mother of Hannah who married John Burton both born 1812 in Hanley. Does any one have any info on these Deakin's or Burtons'?

Deakins of Surrey, or Kent 1800 - 1900

Hello my family is researching Elizabeth Deakin b. 1810; she married William Leach b. 1778 and had one child Elizabeth Leach b. 1830 in England. They arrived in New Jersey apprx. 1831. She and her husband settled in Nottawasaga Ontario. We have a diary entry dated 18 Oct 1902 that states the following...

"Grandma Leach was born in the town of Sussex, Kent County and came of a very old English family who had a large estate there and they and their ancestors had lived there for centuries and still there as Grandmother Leach hears from them occasionally."

Any help with information on Deakins in this area would be much appreciated. I am hoping to get assistance in searching land records to find the family.

I will be happy to assist in any further details that may help.
Sincerely, D Leach

Hi Robyn - Not been in touch for a while, lost your email address too. Sent u msg via Facebook and here. I've been doing loads of research and wondered if you had connections to any of these ancestors that I cannot find after 1891 census?
Looking for William Augustus Deakin; Jesse M Deakin; Alice Mary Maud Deakin; Francis H Deakin.
Any descendants of these Deakins out there?
Last seen on 1891 census at Eastbury House in Watford, Herts, UK.
Father Francis Deakin of Birmingham and his father William were famous sword cutlers/gun manufacturers.
Francis the father died in Watford. His sister Mary was still alive.
Cannot find them on 1901 or 1911 census so thinking they must have gone abroad - but again - no trace on ships - well some vague notions that 3 may have come to South Africa - but not enough info on ships records to prove that.
Are they your ancestors? Regards, possible cousin Christine!

Hi Tony just to say thanks for the reply and I don't see myself doing this side of the family for awhile but will keep copies of your messages and should I find anything I think might be useful to you I will let you know.

As to William Hollins and his wife Sarah Flin I have had no luck with his parents think its a case of finding where the church records for that time scale would be kept and see if they are in there.

good luck with all the family hunting its a very addictive hobby

Sharon

Sharon,
Hi thanks for this. I haven't seen anyone else's research as yet but I'll keep an eye out and check details before I take it as read. I'm still fairly new at genelogy and at the momment most of my research is via the web, which I know has its limitations.

Anyway yes I too have two children for Benjamin & Ann - Sarah (1855) and benjamin (1861)my great grandfather.

I think William Deakin's wife Mary was Mary Cook born 1797 and married in 1819. Hadn't found all the other children apart from Ann & Martha, so I'll have a bit of fun finding them.

I had Sarah Flin's parents as possibly Michael & Mary but can't get anywhere with William Hollins parents.

Anyway, thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Cheers
Tony

Hi Tony thank you for your reply! Its alittle while since I have been doing this part of the family tree. I will say though that there is a person out there who is sharing the Hollins tree with all who enquire and I have pointed out that they have a lot of mistakes on it. I have come across at least four others who have got their info from the same source. They are on here so please as I do always check the info you have been given by going to actual originals.

That being said thanks for confirming you would go with description of step son for John.

As far as I can tell and from details I have found Ann who married Benjamin Hollins was the sister of Harriett who married William Hollins. The debate about William Hollins date of birth is actually one that has caused many a problem until you realise that William Hollins is a name that runs threw that family and there is more than one. Also if you go by the census alone his year of birth varies from 1820 to 1823. I have always taken his birth as 1823 and his brother Benjamin was born in 1826.

The parents of these two Hollins above are William Hollins born 1797 in Hamstell Ridware and his wife Sarah Flin born 1798 Rugeley . It took me some years to unravel just this small bit of the tree. When Sarah died William married Ann Lycett (he was her second husband) she was born in 1813 Etchinghall Staffordshire.

From what you have said you are related to William and Sarah Flin and I am related to William and his second wife Ann. William Hollins 1797 is my and yours Great great great grandfather.

I don't have much info on the Deakin side at the moment. I do have from Census that Ann Deakin and Benjamin had 2 children Sarah and Benjamin of their own plus John Deakin being Ann's son.

I did notice that Ann's parents William Deakin and Mary have 7 children that I know off but I do have a question mark on one of them Martha born 1837 and I have wondered if Martha was actually the daughter of Ann? I never did follow that one up it was the fact that she was born in 1837 compared to the birth dates of all the others.

Well hope this has given you something useful best wishes to you and happy hunting Sharon

Sharon,
Hi, yes John Deakin appears in my family tree. I have the same 1861 census result, Benjamin Hollins is my gg grandfather.

I agree with stepson and I think the most likely explanation is that he was illegitimate, I can't find a record of Ann Deakin being married beforehand.

It is possible that Benjamin's brother William married a cousin of Ann, Harriet Deakin 19th August 1850 in Rugeley. But there seems some debate over Williams date of birth depending on which record you look at, so this may not be the case.

If you have any info on the Hollins / Deakins it would be great to compare notes.

Thanks
Tony

Hi I am descended from the same family - Clara Deakin married a Charles White and I am from that branch! Clara Deakin White's youbgest brother William married Jane Pinner Moseley so I descend from there. Your side must be the Nurser side? I don't know how much you have learnt by now? Are you on Genes Reunited? If so I could open my tree for you - I have descendants of Mary Anne and Jane but Catherine is elusive! I think she died quite young but I hvae her last on 1841 census in Ticehurst Sussex where she was helping out at the birth of Jane's first child (married name Swan - Joseph). I cannot trace the birth or death of Charles who died in infancy - any more info?

I have had a reply from a gentleman from Cheshire but we weren't yet able to see any common ancestors although there were similiar family first names. By the way, William Deakin is quite a common name in all the census as you will soon find. Quite frustrating!! Were your Deakins from the West Derby area of Liverpool? Hope to hear from you again. Good luck with your research.
Marie

Thank you for your reply. I don't know any thing about the Deakin family after 1901. My grandmother didn't speak much about her family and didn't keep in contact with them after emigrating to Australia. My grandmother Maria, her sister Sarah and brother George Bennison were orphaned in the 1890's and went to live with their maternal grandmother Sarah Deakin. When she died they lived with their uncles Thomas and John and aunt Eliza (this is also shown on the 1901 census.) I have located the rest of the family only from census returns from 1861 onwards . The 1861 census shows William Deakin - my grandmother's grandfather DOB as 1836 born in Upholland Lancs. and his son William Deakin ( my grandmother's uncle ) DOB 1857 born in Liverpool Lancs. Both Williams show up on the 1871 census with my grandmothers mother Mary Deakin. William Deakin ( son) does not show up on the 1881 census with the family. Unfortunately I have not had time to spend doing as much research as I would have liked. Do you think this information links with yours? Hope to hear from you.
Marie

Hi there, thank you for your note. I am not sure if that person is related but I am having a few problems with that side of my family. I am descended from John Deakin who married Elizabeth Stone 1860 and had 4 sons. I am descended from one of them, George and they lived at Balsall Heath until th 1890s. I assume Elizabeth died because John and one son, Arthur, moved to Swansea and joined George and his family. I would appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks
Jackie
