That is one of the difficult things about researching people who lived over 100 years ago. If almost everyone in a family emigrated, there is even less of a chance of getting information. And some families daughtered out, so there is no one left with the surname Mahony. I had thought my Mahonys were from Dunmanway, and they might well be, but have recently learned that if a woman was pregnant and not married, she might move to a relative's house in another parish until she had her child. So it is possible that my ggrandfather, Maurice Mahony, born in 1826 in Dunmanway (residence given as Toam), might have been raised elsewhere. He spent his adult life in the parishes of Caheragh and Drimoleague. I keep hoping to find descendants of his father's siblings or of Maurice's half-siblings (if his father married). What a wonderful birthday gift for your dad! Jan

Jan,

My g-g-grandfather John Mahoney was from Shinagh. It appears fom the Irishgenealogy.ie records he was baptised 5/14/21. Two of his three sons emigrated in the 1880's and one moved to Cork City around 1900. My three brothers and I took my Dad to Dunmanway/Shinagh in 2010 as an 80th birthday present. We were able to find some records in Dunmanway of my g-grandfather Cornelius attending the Behagh school, living in Shinagh in the 1870's. We also went to Shinagh (3-4 houses) but the couple of folks we met did not recall any Mahoneys. I would presume that Honora and John were cousins as there appears to be at least two Mahoney families lived in Shinagh in the early 1800's.

All the Best,

Dan Mahoney

Right now I know of no connection. I wish there were. I am sure you are aware of the Dunmanway church records that are now online. My ggrandfather Maurice Mahony was born out of wedlock in 1826 in Toam, Dunmanway. I was recently told that the Toam Mahonys might not have been his - that his mother might have been sent to relatives away from home until she delivered the baby. Always some "turn" that takes me away from finding facts. Jan

My husband's grandfather was a Michael James Deasy who was born in Ireland and he married a Catherine Tobin who was also born in Ireland. We do not know if they were married before they came to San Francisco, CA where they are listed in the 1910 and 1920 Census. We also have no information on their parents, but both were born c1881. Wondering if there could have been a connection.
Karen LaClergue

It would be a good idea if you were to check every so often on the web page I gave in my previous message to see if Drimoleague records have come online yet. I am waiting anxiously. Once Drimoleague records are there, you should be able to find your Denis and maybe the marriage of his parents. I am not sure the Deasy family I mentioned is connected to mine. I was fairly certain that the Mahonys of Toam, Dunmanway, were connected to my Mahony, but I am still working on that. Fingers crossed those records will come online soon.

Hello Sean - Happy New Year! Thank you for the message. You replied to an old entry on Ancestry.com, I posted another request last year as I have a couple of other bits of information now which I have copied and pasted below !

Since my previous post I have found a place of birth and hope this will help me find a connection to other Deasys on this site.I am looking for any information on William Deasy who was born in Desertserges,a parish between Enniskean and Bandon in county Cork, Ireland approx 1838 and died in London November 1917 aged 80. He married Johanna Deasy, maiden name Sweeney. Johanna was born in Ireland approx 1848. In 1891 and 1901 they are shown to be living in West Ham London with their children. Catherine, William, Mary, Johanna and(James who didn't show in the 1901 census) Their daughter Johanna was my Grandmother. I know that Catherine died in 1910 aged 34 and believe Willian his son married Sarah and had a daughter Norah Deasy but I have no other leads apart from a niece Johannah Regan was living with them in 1901.

I would be really interested to hear if there is a link because I am really struggling to find information on this side of the family. I thought we were on the verge of being extinct !!!
Bye for now
Denise

This page http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/locatio... has some records. You would click "Cork and Ross" and then Dunmanway. I am sure you can work on the page until you find what works best for you. You can also use other parishes other than Dunmanway.
Re: Deasy family from Ireland living in London

Deasy family legends go far back into Irish history.

The historian Venerable Bede relates how a Pictish race claiming descent from MacDhai (Son of David) migrated from France in very early times to Ireland, but was refused landing rights by Irish kings already in place. However, they were allowed to settle in Eastern Scotland, provided that each of their succeeding kings would marry an Irish princess. Thus was established a matriarchial heirarchy rarely found in the British Isles. Their name evolved over time into Davidson, Deason, Deas, Deasy, and other variants. Over the centuries, there was much interaction and population movement between Scotland and Ireland.

A medieval work entitled, "The Annals of Ireland", authored by monks known as The Four Masters, identifies Aengus, proprietor of that magnificent stone age fortress called Dun Aengus on the Aran Island of Inishmore, as a likely ancestor of the Deasys.

Later, around 300 AD, Cormac macAirt was High King of Ireland. Known as the wisest and fairest of all the kings before him, he ruled for 40 years. But in the 39th year of his reign, the king's son Cellach abducted and forced his attentions on a Deasy princess. The Deasy chieftain, Angus, was so enraged that he confronted Cormac and Cellach at the Hill of Tara. Cellach replied with words to the effect of, "Nothing you can do about it, old man".

That was the wrong tack to take with a fellow whose name was, "Angus of the Poison Spear". Angus speared Cellach on the spot, then - with the butt of his spear - put out the eye of King Cormac macAirt (thus disqualifying him from remaining High King, for a sitting king had to be a perfect physical specimen in those days). But Cormac and his supporters then fought 7 battles against the Deasys, and won them all.

So the Deasys were banished from the vicinity of Tara and modern County Meath. They split into 3 groups. One group sailed over to Wales and conquered the area around Dyford. A second group moved to the West of Ireland around modern County Clare and later became known as the dal gCais (whose most famous leader became known to history as the High King Brian Boru). The third group moved South to a region straddling modern Counties Waterford and Tipperary and established a proto-kingdom named Decies (which lasted until the Normans arrived centuries later).

In 1014 AD, Deisi warriors from Decies stood with High King Brian Boru against the Vikings in the center of the line at the Battle of Clontarf. The Vikings were defeated, but Brian and the Deisi chieftain Mothla were killed, along with many other Irish leaders.

In the 1600's, possibly in 1649 when Cromwell's forces rampaged across Ireland, a male infant was found alive at the scene of a massacre in Decies. He was taken in and raised by the O'Donovans of the Isle - but since they didn't know his name, they called him "an Deiseach" (meaning, loosely, "the guy from Decies"). That lad went on to have 20 sons (or maybe only 7), and all the Deasys of County Cork are descended from him.

By about 1700 AD, the Cork Deasys were ensconced in Lisscrimeen Castle on the coast overlooking a sandy beach and the sea beyond it. One of the Cork Deasys, who made a fortune in Jamaica, founded the Clonakilty branch of the family, which was widely known for 3 things: building ships, brewing beer, and smuggling along the coast of West Cork (not necessarily in that order). The brewery operated for 200 years, but finally closed in the late 20th Century. Prominent members of this family include Ricard Deasy, a High Justice of the Supreme court in Ireland, and H.H. Deasy, an explorer famous for his travels in Tibet and for founding the Siddeley-Deasy Automobile Company.

In 1867, Fenian rebel leaders Colonel Kelly and Captain Timothy Deasy were captured in Manchester, England - but were forcibly rescued by a band of local Fenians. Kelly and Deasy escaped to the U.S, but 3 of their rescuers (known as the Manchester Martyrs) were hanged by the British.

During the Irish War of Independence in 1920-21, young Patrick Deasy (aged 16) was killed in action while ambushing Black and Tans (actually, a contingent of so-called Auxiliaries) at Kilmichael in Cork.

His brother, Liam Deasy, became Adjutant and later Commanding Officer of the 3rd West Cork Brigade of the IRA, which had rendered County Cork ungovernable by British Crown authorities before the Treaty partitioning Ireland was signed. Their brother Jeremiah Deasy was also active in the Brigade. Liam Deasy then commanded Anti-Treaty Republican forces in Southern Ireland, but was captured by Free State troops and sentenced to death. His sentence was commuted after he issued a letter calling for remnants of the Anti-Treaty forces to dump arms and acknowledge defeat. Liam served with distinction in the Defence Forces of the neutral Irish Free State during WW-II.

My own GGrandfather, Patrick Deasy (1830-1886)and his wife Julia (nee Crowley, 1838-1889) are buried in the Deasy family plot at Dunderrow Cemetery, just outside Kinsale, County Cork. Patrick is remembered for having thrown a heavy, wooden window shutter under the legs of English soldiers who were chasing a fleeing Catholic priest. The priest got away, and so did Patrick, but the soldiers were too lame to chase priests after that. I am seeking, but do not yet have, information on Patrick and Julia's siblings or parents.

My Grandfather, Cornelius Finbar Deasy (1874-1955), was born and raised (as one of eleven children) in Kinsale, County Cork. In the early years of the 20th Century, he operated a bakery there and was known for giving fiery rebel speeches in the town square. But for a rising, you need rifles, and for rifles you need money. So, he and other like-minded men began raising money to buy guns by selling off sheep belonging (in daylight, at least, when the King's writ ran in Cork) to an English landlord.

But one night in 1912, a parish priest came to the house with a warning that Cornelius was about to be arrested. The patriotic curate advised that incriminating muddy boots and clothing should be hidden in the oven at the bakery, and that Cornelius should go on the run. So Con Deasy made his way to America and settled in Massachusetts. His wife Margaret (nee Barry, 1877-1964) Deasy and 5 children, including my father, Patrick Joseph Deasy (1905-1992), followed him to the U.S. in 1913. Cornelius became a union organizer in Boston, thus earning a reputation as a troublemaker on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

So there you have a capsule history of Deasy family origins and activities in Ireland. And now the Deasy saga continues, both in Ireland and America.

Kevin

John and Hanora (king) Deasy/Dasy in 1880 census are in Marquette Michigan with four sons and a daughter listed. Patrick b 1854, Peter b1856, Thomas J, b 1857, and Bridgette b 1859. All marry and have families in the next decade or so. Peter who was apparently a police patrolman dies around 1899 leaving a young widow and 3 small boys. I need to know where to look for the death of Peter and also for other obits of the family. The Ironwood Globe had obits of Patrick and his wife Kate Fleming, but nothing much further back. Could someone lend me a piece of their brain and point me in the right direction? I would be ever so grateful.BTW all these Deasy men and women were from County Mayo, Kate Fleming and family were from Waterford according to obits.
Thanks so much......

He married Johanna Deasy, maiden name unknown. I would be grateful for any help.
Thanks Denise

Yes. I know that my ancestors on the Deasy side came to America from County Cork (I am not surprised, last time I visited Ireland I say pages and pages of Deasys in the Cork Phone Directory. The only information I have at this time, is that my great grandfather was Patrick Deasy--born in Ireland circa 1851. He got married to Elizabeth O'Connor (born in Ireland in 1864). They were married on 19 May 1861 in Pittsburgh, Pennslylvania. Patrick's father's name was Jeremiah Deasy. That is it. If any of these sound like your relatives, I would appreciate any information you have! Likewise, I can fill you in on their heirs after they arrived in America1

Paul

I know that Catherine died in 1910 aged 34 but I have no other leads. Thank you for any info which might help. Does anyone know of any useful websites for Irish geneology ? Thanks for your help.

not sure if there is any connection, but mt great grandmother was called Ellen Deasey and came from Ireland. Her brother was called Patrick and there was a sister called Bridget. They all resided in Rochdale at one time or another.

There is a census record 1881 showing all the three of them in a Workhouse called Fishpool in Bolton. They were left by their mother on the doorstep because they were destitute.

If there is the potential for them to be the same I could share the information that I have.

In respect of Patrick all I know is that he was born 1869

Was Patrick related in any way to a WHITE family, especially a William (Bill) who would have been a cousin?
I have DEASYs who left the area between Timoleague and Butlerstown Co Cork and went to Pittsburgh where Bill was already established. Bill may have owned a Hotel at one time.
My greatgrandmother was Annie DEASY b Lehina, Barryroe(nr Timoleague) 1837. She married a Timothy MAHONEY from Timoleague and later emigrated to England.

William and Johanna Deasy from Ireland

I am looking for any information on William Deasy who was born in Ireland approx 1838 and died in London November 1917 aged 80. He married Johanna Deasy, maiden name unknown. Johanna was born in Ireland approx 1848. In 1891and 1901 they are shown to be living in West Ham with their children. Catherine, William, Mary, Johanna and
(James who didn't show in the 1901 census) ~Their daughter Johanna was my Grandmother. I know that Catherine died in 1910 aged 34 but I have no other leads. Thank you for any info which might help. Does anyone know of any useful websites for Irish geneology ?
