I thought they were the proper couple, as well. Upon my request for William's military and pension records, I was informed that his wife/claimant was Kathleen. Very recently I have found that to be true, at least until I have it documented. I am away now and it is difficult without all the resources and all my notes. Just did not want to you to think I am neglecting your query. Will send more info in a few days.

I have never been able to establish any second marriage. What leads you to believe he married a second woman? Also, the only census records I've been able to find with our William are the 1850 and 1860 US Census. Do you have any others I should know about?

Also, I am convinced that William and Martha Decker are the proper couple, though I would like to know definitively where they were married and where they were born.

Nicholas Decker (ca 1820, NY - ca 1894, WI)

I am looking for another direct descendant of Nicholas and Eliza Jane WALTERS DECKER. I have sketchy information, at best, which is as follows: Nicholas was born ca 1820 in NY and was living in Green County, WI by 1850. He married Eliza Jane Walters in 1849, in same locale. They had at least two children, Emmarilla and George H.

Approximately, 15 yrs. ago, I came into possession of a simple wooden chest that has been given several coats of paint, hardware put on it (i.e. hinges) and a particle board bottom nailed to the bottom of the chest, not to mention some hideous shelf-lining paper. Initially, I was told throughout my childhood years, that George Clayton Decker (a son of George H.) built the chest. However, I discovered 8 yrs. ago, after removing the inside shelf-lining paper, that the chest was made by Nicholas. His signature, along with the year "1847," is written, in pencil, on the inside of the chest.

I have used the chest to store my memories over the years and I have crocheted a wedding-ring throw to cover the top of the chest. I would really like to see this chest go to another direct descendant of Nicholas' and to stay in the DECKER family. Otherwise, I plan on contacting the Green County Wisconsin Historical Society, if no direct descendant can be found. The chest has no monetary value, strictly sentimental value.

According to the 1850 Upshur County Census there is an E. (Elijah?) Decker age 25, M (Mary Ethel?) Decker age 17, and S.M. (Sarah Margaret?) Decker age 1. The family listed just below them is John Decker age 51, S. (Susan) Decker age 24, M.A. (Mary Adeline) Decker age 5, etc.

The line I have followed is this line (John's). I don't know if E. Decker is the son of John (possibly because they are living right next door and the age of E. Decker would suggest that).

I would suggest that you get the 1860, 1870, 1880 censuses for Upshur County to continue your search for Elijah and his family because I have no further information on this line.

Then research in the other direction and find out who Elijah's father is. IF his father is indeed John, I have traced this line back to Grayson County, Kentucky and possibly back to Mecklenburg, Virginia and would be happy to furnish that info.

However, I am leaving shortly for Ireland and would not be able to get back with you until I return in April. Please contact me at drvalsullivan@gmail.com so I can attach files to return to you. I have a picture of one of the female Deckers. I also have copies of land grant and tax roles taken during the Republic of Texas era, before Texas became a state.

In mid-December, I wrote you asking for information on Sinia Adeline Decker, b. 1852/1853, in Upshur Co., TX. She was the middle daughter of Elijah Decker and Mary Ethel Nations. Her older sister was Sarah Margaret and the younger was Lucinda (middle name unknown). After Mary Ethel was widowed, she married Alexander Earp, Sheriff of Upshur Co. They had two children before she died. I would appreciate any information you might have on her or her mother, Mary Ethel, Sinia or her sisters.
I hope that you had a pleasant holiday and that you are able to access your records.
Thanks for any information you can pass on to me.
I found an obit in my grandmother's collection for a D. D. Decker (DeForest Decker).
D. D. Decker Dies in Kansas City, Missouri:
South Dayton, (NY), Feb 16: De Forest D. Decker, fifty-four years old passed away in Kansas City, MO., February 10th from an attack of pericarditis followed by influenza. The remains arrived here Wednesday morning and the funeral was held Thursday from the Decker farm in Villenova with burial in Villenova Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, George and Charlie, two daughters, Myrtle and Ruth. Mr. Decker was a member of Cherry Creek F & A. M. who had charge of the funeral.

I am not sure if this is part of your family, but I find it interesting that they share parts of an unique name.
