Streator Museum

I posted to this board a week or so ago, but it did not go through. This is a second attempt.

There is a museum in Streator that has cemetery records, Streator and Woodland High School yearbooks, and Streator Directories. They also have many LaSalle County and Livingston County history books.

My Armstrong family is linked to the Defenbaugh's through marriage beginning with Nancy Ann Armstrong who married Daniel K. Defenbaugh in the 1800s. She was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Patten) of Ohio. Her brothers, George and Thomas, are both buried with their wives, in the Moon Point Cemetery just outside Streator. My line descends from George. My grandparents, parents, a baby cousin, aunt and two uncles are also buried in Moon Point. There are many Defenbaugh's there, too. My aunt, who is almost 80 now, lives in Rutland, and remembers a lot of the history of Streator and the Armstrong/Defenbaugh connection. She was born and raised along with my dad and aunt on the family farm just outside Streator, near Ancona, IL. My family owned that farm since 1852, selling it in January 2001. My dad amd his sibs were born on that farm. II have many pleasant memories of visiting on vacations and "playing" farmer.

The Streator museum, located at:

306 S. Vermillion St.
Streator, IL 61364
(815) 672-2443

is open Mon - Fri 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Sundays 1p.m. - 4:00 p.m. It is lcoated in someone's private home. Admission is FREE

Sally Crown
Baltimore, MD.

Nancy and Daniel K. Defenbaugh stayed in Ohio even though many family members moved to Illiniois around 1851. Their sons James and Martin, and his brother Joseph, and some of the daughters stayed near Laurelville. They are buried in Stumpf Cemetery just north of Adelphi/Laurelville in Pickaway County.
I know that at least one of her letters remains in the Defenbaugh museum near Streator. In it she commented that she was a better farmer than her husband. Because he was gone so much repairing mills, she had to do the farming herself.
The following probate was just shared on the Fayette Co., PA List (question follows after):

************************
> Diffenbaugh, Conrad, German Twp. dated 1-3-1812
> p. 522 prob. 2-1-1812
> wife Magdalen
> sons George, Conrad, Jacob, Daniel, Solomon, Anthony
> granddaughter Catherine Deffenbaugh, dau. of Conrad
> daughters Barbery, Magdalen, Catherine
> executors sons Jacob and Daniel -
> witnesses George Riffel, Peter Ellenberger, Anthony Difenbaugh
************************

When Philip Mason, of German Township, Fayette County, PA, wrote his will in 1791, he mentioned his three sons, John, Martin and George, and his daughter, listed as "Mary Mason". We know what happened to the three sons, but have never found any additional information about his daughter, Mary Mason. However, one of Philip Mason's neighbors was Conrad Diffenbaugh and we have wondered if Mary might have married one of his sons. Do any Diffenbaugh (of various spellings) genealogists know if any of Conrad's sons (as listed in his will, George, Conrad, Jacob, Daniel, Solomon, or Anthony) married a Mary Mason?

Jim Freed
jmfreed@midohio.net
Thanks for the info. I have some very old photo's that my mom had and I believe some of them also have Armstrongs in them. I think I saw that you live in Baltimore. I travel to DC 5 times a year as I am involved with the Children of the American Revolution. Maybe on one of those trips I can bring my photo's and we could meet somewhere and see how we might actually be related. I know it can't be a direct line on the Defenbaugh side, however I am also related to Armstrongs on the other side of my moms family the Sornbergers. Maybe there is a connection there also. It was nice to hear from you and I will let you know how my trip goes after my return.

Billie

Hi Billie. Hope you have a great time in Streator. There are many Defenbaughs in the Moon Point Cemetery just outside Streator on a small unpaved road just over the RR tracks. My family is buried there, too. Anyone can direct you.

I am also related to the Defenbaughs. Defenbaughs and Armstrongs have a long history together. I have old photos of some of the Defenbaughs together with my grandparents on the Armstrong farm sometime around 1910-1915(?). The farm is just across from the Ancona Road, off Rte 23. All that's left is a small white house and an old cattle barn with attached shed.

Let me know how the trip turns out for you.

Sally A.

Defenbaughs and cemeteries in Streator

There are many Defenbaughs buried in Moon Point Cemetery in Streator. Streator also has a historical society, that will have information on the family. I did not realize that there was a separate cemetery for the Defenbaughs. However, my 80-year-old aunt, who now lives in Rutland, but was born and raised on the family farm in Streator, was aware of it. Moon Point has a website, although I cannot locate the URL (still looking). The Defenbaughs have been connected to the Armstrongs through marriage since Nancy Ann married Daniel K Defenbaugh in the 1800s. If you are heading to Streator and think that you might like to talk with my aunt, let me know. I can always contact her and see if she is willing. She has a great memory and has helped me in filling in the pieces to my research on the Armstrong side.

FYI - My parents, grandparents, aunt, uncles, and baby cousin are all buried in Moon Point (Armstrongs, Covills, and Robert McPherson). If you go there, my parents graves are the first ones on the right inside the gate - Lt. Col George E. Armstrong. His ancestors, George and Thomas Armstrong, both brothers of Nancy Ann Armstrong Defenbaugh, are also buried there with their wives.

I last visited Moon Point in Nov. 2000 just before we sold the family farm. We tried to get to the historical society, but they were closed. Have to check the limited hours they are open, as it is housed in someone's private home.

Please keep me posted on any information you find. Thank you.

Sally A. My father Paul Bradley and my uncle were raised in Streator. Several years ago, I attempted to research the Bradley line but could never get back further that Johnson Bradley. I couldn't find anything definite but suspected that Susan's father was named Abraham. I would also be interested in any information on Abel or Susan or their ancestors. Abel Johnson was said to be a blacksmith making wagon wheels. i

I am researching the Defenbaughs through the Bradley line. Susan Defenbaugh married Abel Johnson Bradley(went by the name of Johnson) around 1850 or so. Her father was supposed to have operated a mill around Ancona. Johnson was a charter member of the Long Point Masonic Lodge. My info says Susan was born in 1831 and died in 1912. I have what I believe to be a picture of her Headstone,in the Defenbaugh Cemetery in Reading, but it doesn't have any dates on it. That is all I have and I would be interested in finding out more on the Defenbaugh connection.

I don't have a spouse for Adam but think it is either a Nancy or an Elizabeth from census records I saw when I first started this. (I can't find the census records now).Would anyone have any connection to any of these?

I also found 3 naturalization records in Cambria Co. for a Conrad Diefenbaugh (Deffenbaugh) filed a Petition on Feb. 12, 1856 in Westmorland Co, Ligonier Twp and then another Petition on Nov 14, 1856 in Cambria Co. His papers were under the date Sept 15, 1863. Henry Deafenbaugh (Defenbach) filed his Petition Oct 3, 1870 in Cambria Co., he arrived from Germany on Oct 17, 1879. Charles Diefenbach filed his Petition Sept 7, 1896 in Cambria Co., he arrived from Germany Nov 29, 1889. These papers don't list any towns in Germany or family, just that they all arrived in New York and where they are living at the time of they made petition. I believe these three to be brothers.

I cannot find any Adam or Nancy listed anywhere. I can however find lots of Deffenbaugh, Defenbaugh, Deafenbaugh, Diefenbach, etc listed in the Johnstown City Directories from 1876 through 1912. I think, haven't been able to prove anything yet, that my Adam went by another first name, possibly John, Henry or Conrad, all of which I have found in the Directories, I have a will for a John and also Naturalizations for Henry and Conrad. If anyone is interested in copies of these city directory listings please let me know and also if anyone thinks they can connect with my line please contact me.
While searching for info on Adam Deffenbaugh I found 3 naturalization records for the following names:
Henry Deafenbaugh arrived from Germany 17 Oct 1869, age 23 yrs. filed Petition 2 Oct 1870 in Cambria Co., PA
Charles Diefenbach arrived from Germany 27 Nov 1889, age 24, filed D & P 17 Sept 1896 in Cambria Co., PA
Conrad Deffenbaugh (also spelled Diefenbach in same document) arrived from Germany and filed Petition first on 12 Feb 1856 in Westmorland Co., PA and then again 15 Sept 15 1863 in Cambria Co,PA.

I also located 2 graves, one named Joseph F b 1877 d. 1922 and the other named James B b 1877 d 1929 buried in Berkey Cemetery, Paint Twp, Somerset Co., PA. I think these all may be connected to the line I am trying to trace. Are any of these connected with anyone's family tree? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Deffenbaughs

Hi, I am researching a very hard to track line. I don't know if the William I mentioned is in this line, I am stuck on finding info on an Adam Deffenbaugh b in Germany who married a Nancy Munteer. This information for Adam and Nancy came from their son Charles death certificate. Charles married Agnes W. Updike and they had a son named George and two daughters, Emma Lewis who stayed in PA and Margaret Keiper who moved to Ohio. I am thinking this William may be a brother to Charles, his obit dosen't list any siblings but obits are always filled with errors. I hope we are connected, I will gladly share what I have if we are.
Samuel L. Defenbaugh

Do you have any information regarding Samuel L. Defenbaugh who married Barbara Eshelman (1790-1863) in 1817 in Lancaster Co., PA? They had the following children:
1) Catherine b. 1817
2) Samuel b. 1820
3) Mary b. 1825 (my ggg grandmother)
4) Barbara Ellen b. 1830
5) Henrietta b. 1831
6) Martin b. 1836
7) John b. 1838

Lastly, I believe that Samuel L. died in Franklin or Bedford Co., PA. His oldest two daugthers were married in those locations. He was not found in the 1850 U.S. Census in Fulton Co., IL with his wife and children, therefore I presume he died before they made the trip west in 1847.
Any and all help would be very much appreciated!
