The information that i have is that James Clement was born in Duanesburgh, Schenectady County, NY in 1777. I find him there in the 1820 through the 1850 census. I don't have the parents names for either James Clement nor for Jane DeGroff. I am related through their son John. I will gladly share his information if you would like and would certainly like to have any information about their parents that you have.Feel free to use my home email address of dennyingham@comcast.net. I look forward to hearing from you.

Denny

I am actually related to James and Jane (DeGroff) Clement of Duanesburg, New York. Jane DeGroff was my 4th great grandmother on my mothers side, through thier daughter Phebe M. Clement.
Some of the records I found suggest that one of James and Jane (DeGroff) Clement's daughters (and possibly sons as well) were born in Saratoga Co., New York. In researching the DeGroff Family, it seems that the DeGroff's married into a Clement Family of Saratoga County fairly often, as these were traditional Dutch ways. I am trying to figure out if this Clement Family is related to the Clement Family in Stillwater and Sleepy Hollow. Yet I do beleive there were at least two Clement families in Saratoga County throughout the 1700's.
Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to share what I have.

-Nick

My grandmother was Jennie C. DeGroff, born July 13, 1894 in the Corning, Elmira, NY area or near the boarder of PA and NY in Lawrenceville, Tioga area of PA. Her Dad was Stephen DeGroff born in 1855 in Perth Amboy, NJ and his father's name was Abraham and while in Perth Amboy he was an Oyster farmer and he and his wife Sally/Sarah had 13 children, Abraham came to Perth Amboy from Hyde Park, NY and I believe he was born in Brooklyn NY around 1805. He was a farmer. Stephen's wife was Abbie Clark and she died young - in her thirties when my grandma was about 9 years old. Do you have any information about this part of the DeGroff Family? My grandmother's brother, Edgar, died at 18 from Typhoid.

After 5 years of searching I finally found something about my ggrandfather who deserted the family. He went by Eugene Degroff but his real name was Clinton Eugene Degroff, he lists his parents as Herman and Helen/Ellen Shaw. He was born about 1865. He had a sister Mary L born about 1868. Does anyone have these names in their tree. Can't find anything except a 1870 census and my ggrandparents marriage license where my grandmother lied about her name? Must be some story behind this story.
Thanks
Kathy in Pa

I am having problems finding any information on my great great grandfather Minor Degroff. I also have a source that said she had brothers named John, Frederick, and Abraham.
Does any of this connect to your family?

Just happened upon your post, mentioning A DeGraff.
George Brinkerhoff is my gggg grandfather. I do have a copy of what is called Low Dutch Land Holdings which was compiled by a member of the Adams Co. Historical Society, a Mr. Author Weaner. In that report there is a Michael DeGraff listed on a land purchase, I believe, on 29 Oct 1748.
I would love to have any information you may wish to share about the Brinkerhoff family.

From piecing together of information from census records and family history books (Hodges family of New England), here is what I know:

Abraham (Abram) DeGroff (also DeGraff and DeGraw in records) was born about 1785 in NY; he married ~1818 to Sylvia Bullis (born about 1791-1795 in VT); he appears on the 1860 census of Clinton county but not in 1870. Five known children:

Smith b about 1818
James O - b 27 Apr 1822 married Lucinda Hodges
William b about 1824
Abraham - b about 1832
Elizabeth - b about 1835
There may be another daughter named Phoebe.

He may be the Abraham DeGraff 6 August 1786 (son of Michael DeGraff)from Dutchess Couty NY, but I can't make the connection.

Sylvia Bullis is most likely the daugther of Germond/Germain Bullis (b1745) or Henry Bullis (b 1749). Their fathr Charles Bullis (b 1723) move from CT to Dutchess county NY about 1750 where Henry was born and then on to Vermont by 1766. The children of Germond and Henry are listed as being born in VT and both men moved to Clinton Co NY by the late 1790s. Henry's list of children appears to be complete, but I have only fouind a list of male children for Germond making him the more likely father.

I'm sure that's Nina DeGroff. I am currently going through boxes of new & old, identified & not identified photos, clippings & just plain junk & organizing them. I know there's an older picture of Nina, but it will take awhile to locate it. You can reach me at defield@securespeed.net for more info. Ellen

P.s. Albert Frost & Dorothy Field are still alive & doing reasonably well for their ages, 93 & 89!

Ellen:

Thank you so much for your reply.

After doing some research I was able to locate a Mr. Frost who from my research was Nina DeGroff's nephew. Lillian's son. I managed to find a phone number and have talked via phone to a Mr. Albert Frost. An elderly gentlemen who was so kind. We conversed a few times and he sent me a picture of Nina and Lillian. He thought their ages to be 12 & 13. I am not sure. He mentioned talking to his sister Dorothy. I know he wasn't well as he had to type his notes to me with one finger. Bless him. I hope he is still with us. If so please pass on my thoughts to him.

The webpage for the picture of Nina Degroff is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/souvenir/1904ath.htm.

Bear in mind when looking at this picture I am going by the names that are written on the front of the picture. She is 2nd from left standing. I actually contacted Bradford County Schools and they told me the names of that particularly graduating class. She was the only Nina. Since Nina was written on the front of the picture my assumption is that she is Nina DeGroff. Obviously if you have later pictures of her that resemble the webpage picture it is the same Nina DeGroff. I would love to see some older photos of her. As I said in my post she is my twin. And I mean my twin. We look exactly alike. So much so it is spooky.

Mr. Frost indicated to me the "Aunt Nina" passed away in DC or Maryland from an auto accident in the 40's. I was able to find her death record. He also told me she never married.

I would love to talk to you more about Nina. I hope when you see the picture you determine that is really her. Because I know we are related.

Please let me know what you find out!!

I cannot wait to hear from you!

Thanks again,

Cheryl Alleman

I will ask my mother-in-law, Dorothy Frost Field, age 93, for details about Nina.

I would love to see the picture of Nina on the Bradford county website. I have seen the Tioga Point Cemetery information. Ellen

DeGroff family of Ulste County New York

Found the family I am looking for in the 1870 census, but lose them after that. Can anyone fill in the blanks for me? Father was Matthew V. DeGroff (1829-1911), mother was Rachel Maria VanAken (1829-1924). They had at least 6 kids Jesse, Elea(?), Caty, Lizza, Willie and Louis all borne between 1851-1873. Louis is the only one I have any info on because he is my son's grt-grt grandfather, but I can't even find him until 1900 when he is married with kids of his own. Any info on the rest of the family would be great.

DeGROFF - GAY relationships

I have an Jacob DeGROFF, son of Abraham DeGROFF, of Dutchess County, NY. In 1834, Jacob DeGROFF and his wife, Harriet, of Poughkeepsie, sell the house and farm of Jacob's father, Abraham. In 1828, a Jacob DeGROFF and wife Harriet of Poughkeepsie, sell land she inherited from her father, Barnet GAY to Robert DeGROFF (the husband of Harriet's sister, Sarah "Sally" GAY). My question...are these two couples, Jacob DeGROFF and his wife Harriet, the same people or are there really two different couples with the same names living in the same town at the same time? Jacob and Harriet DeGROFF are also found in the 1850 census, living in Poughkeepsie. Based of a Bible record for Robert DeGROFF and his wife, Sarah GAY, her sister Harriet was born in 1804 which is only one year off from the age given in the 1850 census for Harriet, wife of Jacob DeGROFF.

Robin,

My husband's grandmother was Minnie Caroline DeGroff Oberlin, the daughter of Lorenzo and Mary Ann Rittenour DeGroff. Minnie was a sister of Willis. I do not have any other info about Willis but I have a lot going back much further info the DeGroff ancestry. This line goes back to France in 1340. I have had a lot of info from several DeGroff descendants . Eldon and Marlene Smith of Bryan, OH helped me a lot several years ago. Also, Joan Titus DeGroff gave me a lot of information. I will e-mail you with their e-mail addresses. I am sure they would be glad to help you and I can give you what I have, too.

Jane

I have a record for Elizabeth Rittenour as married to Ezekiel DeGroff on 28 Jan 1864. She is not listed at his cemetery, but there is a daughter, Viola, born 1864, who married Warren H. LITTLE in 1885, Williams Co. OH. Ezekiel died 15 Jan 1864 while serving the Army of the Cumberland. I have a bit more on her sister Mary, as she married my husbands GG Grandfather.

Robin

Re: NY state DeGroff`s

Dear Peter:

I am researching a John DeGroff who lived in Bradford County, PA around 1900. He was married to an Ida Evans. They had a daughter named Nina. She died in 1943. They are all buried in Bradford County, PA in the Tioga Point Cemetary. I have not found the name Degroff in my family tree. I am actually researching my Merrill line. My Merrill line is from Bradford County, PA. The only reason I am interested in Nina Degroff is I have seen a picture of her on a Bradford County website. I am her twin. There has to be some connection. I know you listed as having info on Degroff from NY, but I was hoping that you might have some info on her. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Cheryl
