Frederick William Dell & Barbara Weber, MIddletown, Ohio

Frederick William Dell was born in Niederwildungen, Hesse in 1832 and came to the United States (Philadelphia) along with his brother, Karl M., and his future brother in law, Christian Knoll, on the J. Welch in 1854.

In Philadelphia, Frederick married Catharina Grosz and they had a son, Charles Christian Dell in 1857. Two additional children were born and they and Catharina died in Philadelphia before 1865.

Karl M. Dell moved to Ohio - Franklin, Trenton, and eventually Middletown. He married Anna Margaret Yaeger. Before 1865 Frederick William and Charles Christian joined them in Ohio.

Frederick William then married Barbara Weber and they had children Will in 1865 (married Anna Young), Catherine in 1866 (married John Jordan), John in 1868 (married Emilie Donner), Charlotte in 1870 (married Philip Schweitzer), Albert in 1872 (married Lizzie Cook), and Emma in 1877 (married Oakwood Cochran who died, then married John Steigerwald).

Charles Christian Dell who had been born in 1857 married Mary Anna Kerschbaum, the daughter of George Kerschbaum and Anna Roth.

I am looking for additional information on the children of Frederick William Dell and Barbara Weber. I am a descendant of Charles Christian and am working on identifying quite a few old photographs (one of them was a portrait postcard from April 19XX to My Brother Charlie) and would love to have some additional help identifying scanned photographs primarily of Dells and Kerschbaums. If you are related to this family, please contact me directly - mvtieche@att.net

Thanks! Vicki

Ancestry has just crashed on me - so you may get some of this twice.
1. If that is what your mother says - then we are, indeed, talking about the same Richard. He just didn't die in the Bideford area - but actually rather later in Portsmouth.
2. The 1851 census lists one of the children as Richard. It is this Richard who was my great grandfather.
3. The same census lists this Richard (jnr) birthplace as being in Canada. I think this is a misunderstanding. He was born in Ireland. I can see how the misunderstanding arose!
4. His mother was born in New Passage - down by the Navy dockyard in Plymouth. The transcriber has put in the old version of the double "S" (which looks like an "f"). Actually, Mary Ann's background is a bit of a mystery.
5. Happy to send details about other census entries and certificates. Bear in mind I don't have the copyrights on these. You may have to send an e-mail address. Don't forget to disguise it (eg fredbloggs at mydomain.com - to avoid getting too much spam).
6. I notice you have already had a reply from Gaherian - with whom I have been in touch in the past. She may have other info.
7. I wasn't aware of Samuel - but am intrigued.
8. I think John - again listed in the 1851 census - ends up in the workhouse at Weymouth. Potentially a very sad story.

You may also be interested in Briant Dell's grave (Richard's brother). The two graves are only about 40 yards apart. Briant's isn't marked with any memorial - but it is immediately to the right hand side of the kerbed grave (on the left of this picture).

In their final years, the two brothers lived just a few hundred yards apart. Briant's home was in Northcote Road (picture herewith).

Fascinated to hear about the taboo.

I am also very interested in the NZ branch of the Dells ... those who are related to the Richard Dell whom we all seem to have in common. I nearly ended up in NZ myself when I was 17, but there was an economic downturn, and the job I was promised, disappeared. I ended up in South Africa two years later, and spent 13 years there before coming to Canada.

Thank you so much for sharing these photos Mal. I was in Portsmouth some years ago, but had no idea where Richard was buried. It means so much to me, to be able to build up a picture of my ancestors and their lives, as they were very much a taboo subject while my parents were alive.

This is Richard Dell's grave in Portsmouth's Highland Road Cemetery. The inscription (on the kerb) says:

In loving memory of Richard Dell, who died October 7th 1903 in his 86th year. Also of Mary Ann, wife of the above, who died July 9th 1879, aged 63 years

I don't think Mary Ann was actually buried there - because she died in the Weymouth area quite a few years earlier. I guess this was just a memorial to her.

Do any of the folks on this thread have an ancestor named Richard Dell, who disappeared from England around 1680? My 7th great grandfather Richard Dell first appeared in colonial West Jersey, on 31 Jan 1686, when he was was named bondsman in the will of Anthony Elston. Some researchers have said that he came from Chingford, Essex but I have not found ANY proof of that origin.
It is in the St Mary Extra cemetery - just off Portsmouth Road in Southampton.

Here is a link to some more information about it.

http://www.southampton.gov.uk/living/southampton-ceremonies/...

The grave is in Sector C023 - and is numbered 107.

If you look at the satellite view, the grave itself is at the Portsmouth Road end of the cemetery - towards the right hand side.

It is quite close to one of the trees - hence the pine needles you can see on the ground in the photograph.
Thank you so much for posting these Mal. I had discovered a few years ago that Avenue Road became Radstock Road. My parents and elder brother lived at 91, so I presume that Elizabeth Jane (my mother's grandmother) was there too. I have a photo of my brother with her, taken about 1944, in the garden. I had no idea that she was alive until 1952. I had been told that all my grandparents and great grandparents had died before I was born.

As mentioned - a couple of other Dell related pictures. Henry Walter Dell is recorded as living at 89 Avenue Road at the time of the 1911 census. Avenue Road, Itchen was later re-named Radstock Road. No 89 is the house on the left.

However, later records show Henry Walter was at 91 Radstock in 1932 - and Elizabeth Jane was at the same address in 1952. So maybe they re-numbered the houses at some point (or perhaps they just moved next door for some reason). Number 91 would be second from left.

It is about a ten minute walk from where the old Woolston Coastguard Station used to be. I don't think the actual station is there any more - but the pub, The Ship Inn, which used to be just around the corner DOES still exist.

Thank you so much for sharing those photographs, Malcolm. I visited Fleet in 2004, and saw the coastguard cottages, and what is left of the original village of Fleet. It immediately brought back memories of reading Moonfleet, by J Meade Faulkner when I was in junior school in Newcastle upon Tyne. I loved that book! Little did I know that my own grandfather was born in the area that the book was set in!
Judy

Hi Judy - great to hear from you! I'm new to the geneology game, but I must admit I'm in danger of getting hooked. As a patriotic Kiwi, it's not all that easy to admit to English ancestors, but... there you go! Looks like Richard is my gg father. His youngest son Samuel at some point landed in New Zealand and became a "Gum Buyer" in the far North of the country. My mother, who started the ball rolling for me, is unaware of how and when Samuel got to New Zealand. Looks like a project for me!

Geoff

Hi again!

Man, you were quick with your response - thank you! It seems I may need to check with my mother, from whom my primary information stems. According to her, my ancestor Richard was born in Ridgeway, Devon around 1816 and married Mary Ann Johnson or Johnston.

Are you able to forward Census Records or anything else you have on him that's reasonably portable? I may be able to check throught the names of the children. Mum quotes Richard's occupation in the 1851 Census as "Coastguard," and cites 4 children living with him: John, Richard, Charlotte, Henry. Does any of that compute?

As I say, I'll check with her although it's a little problematic as we're currently in different countries and she doesn't have the internet.

Geoff

I think there is a risk we are talking about a different Richard Dell. Though I believe both are related.

The Richard Dell I am descended from was born in Ridgeway, Devon around 1816 ( http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl )and baptised in the Plympton area around two years later - on 25 Jan 1818.

He married Mary Ann Johnson in 1843 at Saltash in Cornwall (just across the river/harbour from Plymouth). He died in 1903 in the Southsea area of Portsmouth. He had a long career with the Coastguard. I can track him through the various censuses - and have marriage and death certificates for him.

There are several Richard Dells born at about the same time and in the same extended family.

I suspect that the Richard who is most likely to be one who died in Devon, is the Richard who was baptised at Buckland Brewer 21 Jan 1816 - and later married to a lady called Mary in the Bideford Registration area in 1838. So that seems to fit.

But there were other Richards born around the same time in extended family - so there is the possibility of confusion.

The Richard Dell I suspect you may be talking about was the son of yet another Richard Dell (baptised at East Putford in 1788) and his wife Mary Harris (married March 1815 at Buckland Brewer).

The one I am talking about was the son of Bryant Dell (born around 1789 in Shebbear) and Maria Hillson (married at Plympton in March 1814) - and he was baptised in the Ridgeway/Colebrook/Plympton area.

There is another - born to Henry Dell and Joanna (and again baptised at Buckland Brewer).

All three baptisms are close together in time. The three Richards would have been cousins (some closer than others).

And there may be other Richards who I have missed!

I located the burial of an ancestor Robert Armstrong Cassidy in Heath's Lane, Hemel Hempstead, Grave R/24. He died in 1887. I see that the grave has also been used by the Dell family: Alfred Dell (buried 6 June 1925); Charlotte Mary Jane Dell (buried 14 Dec 1950); and Minnie Dell (buried 16 April 1971). Does anyone know if the Dells have Cassidy, Darley or Wood connections? Or is it just efficient use of graveyard space?
ABCass

Yes, there were lots of Dells in Ontario. Sounds like there are different branches in this thread. My husband's (adoptive)5th great grandfather was Bassnett Dell (1728-1808) who came from New Jersey after the Revolutionary War. They were Loyalists and the Crown gave 200 acres of land to those loyal. He and several sons went together and were west of Niagara Falls in Ontario. Barnabas Dell moved to West Olive, MI in 1870 with his family whereas another brother moved to Port Huron, MI.
Now in October 2011 my husband and I will be visiting this area in Ontario. Have seen a Dell cemetery online that we plan to go see. We know where their actual farm was.
Anyone know more about the Dells in Ontario and things to see?
My tree is not public since there is so much editing to do yet/first. If you'd like to look around our Glen Dell Family Tree, contact me at janndell@juno.com

Hi Jerry Dell,
My 4th great grandfather was William Dell, son of Basnet & Hannah (Burris) Dell. My 2nd great gf was Henry Harvey Dell, b. 1818 probably in Windham, Norfolk Co., Ontario. There is conflicting evidence as to who was my 3rd great gf.

William came to Canada age 19 1785/1786 with his in-laws (Steinhoffs). Located on Lots 9, 10 Broken Front, on Chippawa Creek, Willoughby Twp. under Land Board certificate 12 Mar 1792. Resided for 10-12 years there, then moved to Norfolk Co, per newspaper obit Norfolk Conservative Standard 13 Jun 1855. He had seven sons (I think), any one of which might be my 3rd great gf.

Have you any information on this Dell family? Are you related to Jeremy William Dell, b. 1992? TIA

Hi rmisaacson, I had been in touch with Robin a couple of years ago and met her son last spring. He mentioned that Ruth would have Robins research...maybe I've stumbled upon Ruth. I may have some information on Niagara Falls "Dells". I was born and raised here, please contact me.
Jerry Dell
