Are you interested in doing a look up for another family Demaree relative?

I need documented evidence that my Abram Demaree born in Henry Co. Kentucky married Margaret )Peggy) Corn, is descended from David Demarest of Hackensack, NJ. and how?

As far as I can find, undocumented, Abram is also known as Abraham Jr. son of Abraham Sr. and Nancy Hoagland. He was son of Samuel Demerest, son of Samuel and there I come to a screeching halt. No documentation online ties any of these people together with documented evidence. Does your edition of the Demerest family book give any insight to this line?

Thanks,

Jaye Martz
jkmartz7@gmail.com

Hi

The Demarest Family Association changed its name quite quickly to the Demarest Genealogical Society and its website was open for some years but is now closed to view. Still exists but as a private domain apparently only open to those approved.
I am doing updates as a project for a new book which is one of the things we are working on. Please e-mail me at demarestr(at)msn(dot)com with your fathers 1964 book # (mine is 12-379) and I will put the line in the format I'm using and send it to you for update. I already have a couple hundred in various states of progress in at least six of the name variations.

R/
Bob

Thank you for your reply. I have the books from the 1960's and would be interested in contributing updated Demarest history from my branch. What has been documented in those 1960's books is priceless, and needs to be continued to the present and beyond. Auverne (Demarest) Dieffenbach

Hi,
The Assn hasn't stayed up for more than a few years at a time. I recently talked to Mr. Bellis, former Pres. of the Blauvelt-Demarest Foundation and they are trying to get something going. As of right now, they are the official keepers of the Demarest hard copy history. The foundation and I are also kind of working in concert with David and John Major, authors of "A Huguenot on the Hackensack: David Demarest and his Legacy" (2007) to get some movement in the family genealogy circles. To that end, I have a group on Facebook called "Grandchildren of David and Marie Sohier desMarets" and we have started a website www.thedesmarets.com that is just starting to really take shape. If interested, it is much easier to work from Facebook and we have a few very active folks there to help if you need it...

R/
Bob Demarest

My particular interest is Sarah, whom I believe to be my 2x great-grandmother. This is a mystery; I have some other details about Sarah, but right now I'm in quite a rush. The marriage record is intriguing. Thanks for looking into it.

Jennifer

I've been doing a little research and found a lot of similar data and some inconsistent ones. Seems they had left out the fact there was one child born to Henry and I found 3 name variations used for Phoebe:

Phoebe Ann (Being the one with Demarest birth records)
Phoebe Mariah (none listed in Demarest genealogy)
Phoebe Julia (none listed in Demarest genealogy)

Phoebe could have started using her baptizmal name instead of Ann, I don't have a good explanation for that. I have found some consistent marriage dates for Ann and Mariah, both records I found show the marriage for 7 Jan 1830 at United Presbyterian Church Of Broadalbin, Perth, Fulton, New York. But, all of them only show one child, James Bont Kested.

James Bont Kested
Born: December 11, 1836 Broadalbin, NY, Died: 1901
Spouse: Rebecca Plantz
Parents: Henry Kested and Phoebe Demarest
Siblings: None
Children: Anna, John, Charles, William, Gussie, Jessie, James, Harry, Bert, Bertha, Shelby

R/
Bob

Demorest is a variation of Demarest. There are 16 variations I know of and find it hard to believe that there would be that many Henry Kested's. Our family history may not be complete. Broadalbin is still a very small town and back in the late 1700's/early 1800's, the Demarest/Demorest lines held much of the land, believed to be well over 1000 acres. So, I wouldn't give up on this lead just yet.

Bob

Thanks awfully much, but I must have the wrong person. The Henry Kested I am interested in lived until at least 1860 (he's on the census), and he had five or six children. The family lived in Perth. His wife (listed variously as Mary, Mariah) states that she was born in Broadalbin. Not really sure how I got the name Demarest, but it is clearly not right. Thank you for time time!

I do appreciate your timely response!

Jennifer

His name is Robert Demarest and I believe his family is from Broadilin. (sorry about the spelling). If anyone has information, he will!

I have a possible connection to a David Demarest, possibly living in Broadalbin, NY, on the census from 1810 -1840. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Jennifer Kiernan

We've had at least one instance where the disk was blank when they got it. Got taken care of quick though.

I started a genealogy group for Demarest (and all variant names) a couple of years ago on Facebook. It's called "Grandchildren of David and Marie Sohier desMarets" anybody interested can request to join. We share a lot of info and went to out first Demarest Day family meeting in Demarest, NJ. We also launched a new website that's now being populated with family history information. Come join us on Facebook if you aren't already a member.

Robert Demarest

I am looking for information on descendants of the Demarests who lived here, in particular David Demarest (born circa 1796, wife Ann); John J. Demarest (b. circa 1806, wife Ann); James A. Demarest (b. circa 1802, wife Jane); John A. Demarest (b. circa 1797, wife Janette).

Quick Google search bought up this page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Jennings_Demorest

"William Jennings Demorest (aka W. Jennings Demorest) (1822–1895), from New York City, was an American magazine publisher, national prohibition leader, and, in collaboration with his second wife, Ellen Demorest, née Curtis, attained international success from his wife's development of paper patterns for sewing fashion apparel of the day. Together, he and his wife built a fashion manufacturing and merchandising empire from it.

He and his wife launched five magazines. He, as individual, patented a sewing machine and a velocipede. He and his wife started a cosmetic business.

Demorest harbored lifelong political and religious aspirations. He is widely known for being a Prohibition activist and ran for Mayor of New York City on the Prohibition ticket. He also organized the Anti-Nuisance League."

If you search for 6 W 14th St New York, NY 10011, the building where the magazines were published is still standing, it is now a "Best Value Electronics" store.

Berdan Tintypes — Any Familiar Faces?

I have been scanning some tintypes that I found among some items belonging to my great-grandparents, Raymond Berdan and Nellie Braen, and just uploaded them to a website for review. These photos were taken in Northern NJ (Paterson, Totowa) and NYC areas and, as tintypes, are one of a kind images.

Raymond's grandmother was Catherine Demarest (daughter of the Rev. John Demarest), and his father William D. (Demarest) Berdan.

I'm hoping to match some names to faces as I'm sure there most be some siblings or cousins in the images. Most of them are from the 1890-1900s but the one that really intrigues me is from about 1860.

I'm happy to share the high-resolution scans (for non-commercial use only of course) upon request. The email is on the website. I'll be working on the high resolution images as I find time, digitally restoring them throughout the summer. (Forewarning, I'm a graphics professional so my definition of "high-resolution" are 200+ MB files.)

Please have a look and let me know what you think: http://web.mac.com/mnovakdesign

Thanks.

Mich Novak

Demarest Birth Certificate

Henry Samuel Demarest was my great grandfather, born 1867, in NY. His wife was Ida E. Read, also born 1867 in NY. He traveled all over Europe. He lived in New York and had 2 children. Gladys, who was adopted, and Donald. Have been trying to find out more about the family, but no luck. I lost track of Donald after he turned 30. How do I get a birth certificate for my grandmother (Gladys)? I have no idea as to who her real parents were, just that she was born about 1890 in NY, and I'm told that she spoke a few words of German. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Demarest Family/Baldwin Connection

I just found your old post. Fascinating.
Fonda's Bush is an old name for Broadalin, now in Fulton
County NY. (Formerly in Montgomery County). It caused me no end of confusion.

I am interested in the daughter Maria. Do you know what happened to her? I have been tracking a family that disappeared from Broadalbin in the 1830's. The mother is
Maria, but her surname is unknown.

You can email directly at dcartmer@becon.org.

Thanks.

Re: Antie Lozier Demaray

I am descended from Samuel and Antie Lozier as well. Mary Demaray, daughter of John Demaray, son of Samuel Demaray and Grietje Martin Demaray, was my 4th great-grandmother. I have only just begun to research this branch, but I will be looking through some old Dutch records, and I will certainly let you know what I find. Regards, Allyson Handley

Stevens/Demaray Photo Identification Help Needed

Dear all, I am a descendant of Calvin David Stevens (b. 1838, NY, died 1918, MI). My great-grandmother Delilah Stevens (Calvin's grand-daughter)had in her possession (now in mine) an old photo of Calvin D. as a baby, with his mother, Mary Demaray Stevens (b. abt. 1815, Quebec), and three other women of the Demaray or Stevens family. I cannot identify these women, and I was wondering if anyone familiar with these lines may have old photos that they can compare. Possible candidates for the three unknown women are Adam Stevens' mother (name unknown), Elizabeth Church Demaray, Mary Demaray's sister(s), Polly Crossman Stevens, or perhaps a Demaray grandmother. Any help that anyone can offer would be appreciated. If you can help, reply to this thread and we'll exchange e-mails, and I'll send out a copy of the pic. Thank you all!
Much of this book is available on the Demarest website. Go to www.demarests/genealogy/ and cunder what's new in April 2004, click on "1964 genealogy - text."

This takes you to a series of text files by generation.

I've found the information related to the family in America to be generally very accurate, although occasionally there are errors that have surfaced now that so much more information is available and accessible.

You should also take a look at a more recent book, if you haven't already done so... "A Hugenot on the Hackensack...David Demarest and His Legacy" by David C. Major and John S. Major. This book was published in 2007.
