Demetri, John (Greek)

I am researching info on my great grandfather John Demetri (Giannis or Yanni), who came from Greece or possibly Macedonia in 1909. I only know that he married in 1930's to my great grandmother who was a widow with three childrenfrom previous marriage. Her name was Triandelphia (Rosa) Kalogeras-Lalas. They lived in Cuthbert, Randolph Co, Georgia, Thomasville Georgia area and were co-partners in a small town restaurant. The only think we know of John Demetri's past is that his mother lived to be well over 100 years old in Greece and she died sometime around 1930-1940. I guess longevity ran in this family because John Demetri died in Fulton County, Atlanta Georgia in 1959 at at least 84 years oldthus making him born around 1875. He was a very intellegent man and was able to speak and read both Greek and English. The spelling of his name varies with each document uncovered which is common i.e. (Demetri, Dimitri, Demtri, Demitre, etc.). We are not positive if this was his real last name of maybe a shorter version of a much longer name. Since he could read and write, we assume he maintained his Greek name.

Any info appreciated and will reply to any comments.Email me directly ar: ellinas@bellsouth.net

Sincerely,

Despina Lalas

Hello,

Good to hear from you. I am aware of Clotario Demetri and his descendents who live in New York. We were unable to connect them to Celestino who came to the US in 1865 with his wife, Caterina and young child Gaetano. I have located them on the US census but there is no parent listed for Celestino.

I have been in contact for several years with Valerio who lives in Polesella and his cousin Paola who live in Milan. We cannot find the connection either although Valerio and Paola have searched records in Polesella and surrounding areas.

You can contact me direct at edemetri@msn.com.

Regards,

Liz Demetri
