An enlightenment: The house was built by Alma Millett with the help of his father Artimus Millett on Alma's land which was "The North east quarter of the northeast quarter of section nine and the north half of the North west quarter and the south east quarter, of the Northwest quarter of Section ten in the township forty two south of range ten west of Salt Lake Meridian in Utah Territory," See Homeland Certificate No. 1896. This is an exact quote from Book D Pages 399 & 400, recorded in Kane County.

I quote from the book "Artimus Millett - The Temple Builder," "Before Alma left to heed the call (Brigham Young called him to go to Escalante), he gave his large stone house to the Oliver De Milles, a family who had married many times into the Millett and Beal families, causing it to be know as the "DeMille House" from that time on."

I suggest to all who are really interested that you get copies of the original land deeds given to the settlers in Shonesburg. You will find that the "Big Rock House" was built on the parcel of land deeded to Artimus Millett. The DeMiles had a parcel adjacent to that. Again compare it to the
original. Compare the Manti Council Houae built by Artimus with his stone house in Shonesburg. They are very, VERY similar. This cod go on and on but I suggest you search and research the original documentation. When the Milletts left and moved to Arizona the daughter, who had just married a DeMille moved into the house. Of course since that time it was know as the DeMille house BUT it was built by Artimus Millett.

Thanks and enjoy your history search.
wmd

Hi,
I grew up for the beginning of my life in Rockville, Utah. My ancestors are the Terrys, the Milletts & the Demilles. I'm very aware of the heritage of masonry work that's handed down through Artemas Millett, my 3rd great-grandfather. I'm into genealogy quite heavily.

I found another entry in Joseph Millett, Jr's journal, about Joseph Millett, Jr. helping Oliver to build the stone house, Page 41 – October 1883,
“Aunt Harriet Millett and son Artemus arrived on the 16th from Arizona on a visit. I let them with her Daughter Hally and husband Oliver DeMill Jr. move into my house. And Orpha and my self remained at her Fathers & worked the most the time for him on New house. Making hoisting machine for raising rock on to the building and cutting rock and laying rock on house. Until the 14th of Dec. then I worked some for my self on my lot and making basket out of ash splints for my self and Father in law.”

I guess that won't prove it to you either. I'm sure that the heritage of rock cutting and etc. was handed down somewhat to Joseph Millett, Jr. although he states he had never done it before. Possibly his father helped in technique.

A little 'history' that's passed down I have a quote from, also, "The first thing Oliver did when he got to Shonesburg was to build two log houses. They were made of cottonwood logs. One had a dirt floor and roof, and the other had a rock floor and bark roof. In later years he and Joseph Millet built a three story rock house. They made fences out of cotton logs, they were so big they had to use horses to put them up, and move them around. Emily's family and Fidelia lived together in the big rock house. The top floor was used for school, dancing ect."

I noticed through Joseph Millett Jr's journal that Alma was in Arizona during this time period and in Mexico by 1885.

Using purely logic, question: Why would Oliver build a new large house, for which Joseph had to build a 'hoisting machine' for - if he supposedly had bought the house from Alma?

I've made numeras contacts with the people in Rockville to help me validate the date of the rock house and who made it.

Thank you,
vila11

That doesn't say anything. Check the original trusts given to the settlers. DeMills had land adjacent to Milletts. The stone house was built by the Millets who were stone masons. They built a very similar building, the Manti County House. The Millets were stone masons; they knew how to build with stone. Your reference was to 1883. The Millets had long left Shonesberg and had gone to Arizona. When they left, their newly married daughter and her husband, a DeMille lived in the house. Of course the DeMills now had the house and it now was the DeMile house. BUT it was built originally by the Milletts. Ms DeMille, her self in "Shonesburg: The Town Nobody Knowa" says "The care taken in setting the cut stone into place, the decorative molding along the eaves of the house, and the stone work of the chimney show the skill of the Millett family. Theirs was an artestic endeavor as well as a practical task of building a sturdy home." My grandmother Mary Delilah Millett Davis was born in Shonesburg
You may want to read the book, Artimus Millett, the Temple Builder. You can get a copy from Stephanie Reber at 836 S. 770 East, in St. George, Utah.
I was searching for Oliver Demille online and found this thread. I have long known from family information handed down that Oliver Demille built the stone house in Shonesburg.
Not too long ago I obtained a copy of the journal of Joseph Millett, Jr. from the L.D.S. Historical Department. In it he states:
Page 35 – 1883 , 3rd of April.
“[3rd of April[ When we quit work, [ Joseph and his wife, Orpha – at a ranch, she cooking for the hands, he milked cows, put up fences, etc.], & returned to Shoensburg. Oliver DeMill my father in law went with me to St George to draw my money for our labor at Canaan. Returned again to Shoenesburg on the 8th of May and commenced work for Oliver DeMill on the 9th May. on stone house, cutting & laying rock, my first introduction to this kind of labor labor at Shoensburg. May & June for Oliver DeMill."

I think this says it all.
Thank you
In the "DeMille Family History and Geneology" compiled by Issa M.R. Teeples Stapley in 1933, Oliver DeMille II, who married Harriet S. Millet, says, "The first school house in Shonesburg was made of cottonwood logs. It had a board floor and roof. All the dwelling houses were made of logs, too, except Alma Millet's. He built a big rock house." (page 159).
This well known among the Millets. You can also see reference to this in "Artimus Millett,The Temple Builder."
On page 173 of said book you can see a picture of the Millett house in Shonesburg next to a picture of a the Manti Council House building. You can see the similariities.

I hope this helps.

Morgan Davis

I have been searching for several years for the ancestry of the mother of my brother-in-law, George L. Zimmerman. I located Mae DeMille as Mae Talliaferro, a housekeeper for an older gentleman, in the 1920 Census in Binghamton, Broome County, NY. In 1930 she is listed with her second husband, George Zimmerman, and their children in Oneonta, Otsego County, NY. Mae left all but one of her children and married her third husband, Wallace Francis.
I was able to finally find her birth and death dates when I called a cemetery in Stanford, CT. She was born May 7, 1901 and died December 12, 1945. Her children were told that her father was Albert DeMille and her mother was Kathryn Farrington. I have not been able to locate them in any Censuses.

Contrary to what some people believe, the large stone house in Shonesburg, Utan was built by Alma Millet, NOT Oliver DeMille. Demille had land adjacent to Alma Millet's. In the DeMille History published in 1933. Oliver DeMille II himself says, "The first school house in Shonesburg was made of cottonwood logs. It had a board floor and roof. All the dwelling houses were made of logs, too, except Alma Millet's. He built a big rock house." (page 159)

Contrary to what some people think, the large stone house in Shonesburg was built by Alma Millet, NOT Oliver DeMille. I will be more than willing to give anyone the documentation. Oliver DeMille ll who married Harriet S. Millet, says in the book "Demille Family History and Geneology" published in 1933, "The first school house in Shoensburg was made of cottonwood logs. It had a board floor and roof. All the dwelling houses were made of logs, too, except Alma Millet's. He build a big rock house." (page 159).
It if fine to know that the DeMille's lived in the house, BUT IT WAS BUILT BY ALMA MILLET.

Hi Robin,
What a nice surprise to hear from you. Yes, I knew most of the info you gave me. I was traveling on business a year ago, and went to Chicago and met George DeMille Jr , our cousin and he is a wealth of info! Then, I went to Boston and had a very nice visit with Aunt Anita and Uncle Bob. Aunt Anita calls me about once a month. She seems to be doing well, she talks about your mom alot. Uncle Bob doesnt seem as well though. I think I sort of remember you coming to visit us when my mom and dad were still together, I was very young. Did your dad play the saxophone? Did you have some silly healing talent, I remember someone placing their hands on my dad's sore leg and said they could heal him? LOL, funny the things you remember when young.
George Jr is planning a reunion in Quebec in Sept with the original Desmueles, not sure if I can go as I have been having some health issues. Would be nice though. How is your mom? Anita says she is having heart probs and wont get surgery?
We should stay in touch, you can email me at caterinawit@aol.com. I often wonder what happen to all my cousins like Claudette and Joanne, and well, I know where the Burt boys are.
Stay in touch!
Cathy DeMille

Hello,
You are my first cousin. I am Robin Landry, the daughter of Lorraine (DeMille) Landry, who was the youngest child born to Exilda (Memere) and Joe (Pepere). You are Uncle Ed's daughter...he was the 3rd youngest child, followed by Jeannette, who is now deceased but was 18 months older than my mother, your Aunt Lorraine. My mother, your Aunt Lorraine, is now 74 years old and lives with my husband, Tom, and I in Reno, NV. Our grandmother was pregnant 13 times, but her youngest child, a boy, was stillborn, as I recall her telling me. As I recall, your mother's name is Joan...is that correct? The only remaining living siblings of your father now are my mother, our Aunt Anita, and our Uncle Bob. It is my understanding Uncle Bob is very frail now and struggling with leukemia. Aunt Anita also has some health problems but is living independently with her husband in Massachusettes. Aunt Vivian died some years ago. As did Uncle Leo, Aunt Jean, Uncle George, Auntie Theresa (my favorite aunt), Aunt Ora (who is the most recent sibling to die...about 2 years ago), and Auntie Jeannette (also one of my favorites). It looks like some time since you have posted, hopefully you will check back and see this update.
All the best,
Robin

Good morning from Alberta, to the Demille Surname List on the Rootsweb.

I have been researching the Demille genealogy for a few years and have an interest in finding others who may be able to assist me with my Brick Wall problem.

I am researching to prove my wife's United Empire Loyalists (UEL) lineage so that we can apply for her UEL Certificate. She is a Demille descendant of Anthony Demill (b-1809)Sophiasburg Twp, PEC, Ontario. I have hit a Brick Wall at trying to determine who his parents are. Can you help?

UEL descendants include, Demille, Cross, Vincent, Bullimore, Bulmer.

We may be attending the Annual UEL Conference being held in St. John, New Brunswick this summer and look forward to meeting other Demille descendants who may be attending as well.

Should you be interested in communicating please reply.

Kindest regards

Al & Rene Dodd
Alberta, Canada

Nancy,
It has been some years since we poked around on Rootsweb Message Boards. Thought that maybe we could send a request for an update on any new information about the two brothers, Anthony & Peter. I have found out, just to add to the confusion, there were two Peter DeMill's, alive at the same time, that lived in or near Northport, Sophiasburg Twp, PEC, Ontario.

Can we renew our search?

btw - New e-mail address is aldodd@telus.net

Kindest regards
Al Dodd
Desperately seeking Michelle Demille

I know this is probably a long shot but I thought I would try since I am having no luck elsewhere. I am looking for my old friend, Michelle Demille. She would be between 27-31 years old. I haven't seen her for 8 years. It's very important that I find her. Some other random info that might jog someone's recollection: Her mother's name is Irene, her father used to have a martial arts studio in North Seattle, she and I lived together 94-96, she dated "Richard", worked at Marie Callendars. I think she may have family in Hawaii. Her dad was hawaiian, or samoan, or something like that. I'm assuming she is still in WA but she could be married and moved somewhere else for all I know.

If you think you know who she is, please help me get in contact with her.

Thanks,
Jacki

sassygrl25@hotmail.com
