Hi,
I hope you are still on-line and looking. I am of the same direct line and have all the info for your family from 1964 all the way back to 1620. Your line split from mine just before the Civil War and moved to Michigan from Broadalbin, NY. I still live less than 75 miles from there in the western end of the Mohawk Valley. I just recently hooked up with a descendant of Effie Demorest and helped them out. Contact me if you would like the information.

R/
Bob Demarest

Hello Bob, as you say there are a lot of unreliable Demorest trees on the web!
Can you please provivide the family details of Samuel Demorest m Susan X and his father Nicholas Demorest m Polly Smith? I would like Birth, marriage, death data on both please. If you have their kids too, great.
I have found a Rootsweb tree which looks reasonable from Gilyam,b 1765 back to David in Picardy. I worry about the ancestors before him, so many folks want to be descended from Charlemagne, it's ridiculous!
Many thanks, Rudy Okker.
If it's easier to send it direct, my EMail is sallyo@videotron.ca

No problem at all. Most of the info is in the 1938 and 1964 edition of our family history "The Demarest Family." I have copies of them and can help if you have other questions. There is a ton of info for each person in the books and we find new stuff every day.

Bob

Most of the Michigan Demorest's descend from my direct line. It was some time just before the Civil War that a group left Broadalbin, NY and settled in MI, WI, IN and OH.

James was born 1861 died August 23, 1893 Louisiana Missouri married September 23, 1884 at Hannibal Missouri Rosanna Garver; she married (2) - - - - Lambert.

James was the son of Samuel Demorest and Susan ?. Samuel was the son of Nicholas Demorest and Polly Smith, Nicholas was the son of Gilyam N. Demorest and Lea Goetschius. Gilyam was the first in his line to use the spelling Demorest and (was the brother of my 5th GGMother Sara Demarest) was the son of Niclaes Demarest and Elsie Demarest (3rd cousins), Niclaes was the son of David Demarest IV and Maritie Lozier. David was the son of David Demarest III and Sara Bertholf. David III was the son of David desMarets (Demarest) Jr. and Rachel Cresson. David Jr. was the son of David desMarets and Marie Sohier.

That gets us back to 1620 in Beauchamps, Picardy, France. Much of the family prior to David Sr. shoddy guesswork by a man named Louis DeBoer.

For anyone interested that has a tie to the family, I have a genealogy/research group on Facebook named Grandchildren of David and Marie Sohier desMarets. We have a lot of fun and do a ton of genealogy work and plenty of web searches to update information...

R/
Robert Demarest
This is a GREAT breakthrough for me. I have an Effie Demorest, born 1906 in Illinois. Parents were Milton Devore Demorest, born 1886, Missouri and Elnora Pearl Emory, born 1887, Illinois. Effie married into the VanGessel family in Michigan and the descendant married into the Michigan Okker family. Thanks for this lead.
Can anyone advise more details of James H Demorest and Rose Ann Garver.
Rudy Okker, Montreal, Canada

Back in the 1930's a church in New York sent bibles and hymnals to a small church in rural Alberta. One of those Bibles was a large family Bible with about four pages of Demorest family history from 1824 to 1918. The births include a William John Demorest 1881, a Herbert Arthur Demorest 1883, a Howard Clinton? Demorest 1885, Mary Jane Demorest 1870, Martha Jane Demorest 1872, Susie Thornton Demorest 1867, Nelson Walter Demorest 1874. If any of these names mean anything to you, I can share more information (three or four pages of births and deaths with complete dates) Also, we can figure out whose Bible this was.

At the same time was baptized Elizabeth Tindle, b.o. ___29, 1808 dau of George Tindle and Caty Sanders.
Therefore, our Elizabeth is #7-942 in The Demarest Family (1964) but with the wrong date, a researcher having misread the records.

Re: William Jennings Demorest 1822-1895; fashion, publishing, etc.

Hi - I have quite a lot on William Jennings Demorest, as my Demorest hubby is a somewhat distant cousin.

William Jennings Demorest was born 22 June 1822, died 09 April 1895. He married Ellen Louise Curtis, born 1825, died 10 Aug 1898. Their lives were extremely full and interesting!

Ellen developed the first commercial clothing patterns in the 1850s. Her patterns were only surpassed by Ebenezer Butterick's in the 1880s as he had the foresight to patent the idea in 1865. BTW, she ripped off the idea from her maid. Ellen opened a couture shop on the lower eastside of Manhattan; various locations throughout the years but best known address was 17 E. 14th Street. Ellen influenced fashion worldwide and opened another shop in Paris (5 Rue Scribe) as well as London (11 Bouverle Street.) In fact, the "Detroit Free Press" gives her credit in 1878 for designing dresses that, for the first time, did not have to touch the floor. She teamed up with premier NYC real estate developer Susan A. King to be the first woman owner of a commercial ship, built specifically to import tea from Asia.

What was William Jennings Demorest doing? A lot! He was into publishing, foremost his wife's fashions in their own magazine "Mme. Demorest's Mirror of Fashion," begun in Aug 1860. He also published "Demorest's Illustrated Monthly" begun Sept 1864, the juvenile magazine "Young America," and sheet music. He invented a bicycle, and a sewing machine in 1860 that rivaled Singer's technology at the time.

When you read about them, you'd think they were very conservative. Actually they were staunch liberals. They championed causes such as women's rights and emancipation. Their only illiberal stance was that they were a major temporance force. William J. began the National Prohibition Bureau in 1885 and started a worldwide Medal Contest in 1886 for children who wrote Prohibition essays. The town of Demorest, Georgia is named for him because of his efforts.

Most of this info can be found in a book written about the couple: "Crusades & Crinolines," by Ishbel Ross. New York: Harper & Row. 1963. (There are other books that include them, too.) Some of the info is from my research, especially from old Demorest mags. I'm a collector of Demorest paraphenalia (cheap hobby considering my source. ha!) and can tell you that you can find a lot of it inexpensively on the internet: Demorest magazines, Demorest Victorian trade card (what was really a business card back then for the store), sheet music, even Demorest Prohibtion Medals and dress patterns. You can find the book mentioned VERY cheaply.

So that ought to bring you up to speed on William Jennings Demorest. Cool that you live in one of his houses! You probably won't find much genealogy stuff on him & I don't know why. I never see him in anyone's tree, even when he belongs. So, for the sake of all you Demorests out there that don't know where he belongs, I'll do a brief tree. Then you'll figure it out right away:

Jean des Marets + Maguerie de Herville(Beauchamps, France to New Milford, New Jersey)
>
David des Marets + Marie Sohier
>
Samuel Demarest + Marie de Ruine
>
Samuel Demarest + Annatie Van Hoorn
>
Peter Demarest + Maria Demarest
>
Cornelius Demarest + Maria Demarest
>
Petrus Demorest + Jane Brower
>
William Jennings Demorest + Ellen Louise Curtis

Thank you so much for the tip. I will see if I can get a copy of the microfilm. I love the LDS site. I am not a family member but the current caretaker of a historic home that Ida and her husband built. The home is 104 years old and I have traced her husband family back as far as 1600's coming to America. I have made a scrapbook of owners of the house and they are the beginning. I just have yet to be able to find anything about her. Thank you again and good luck to you in finding your ancestors.

Hello Demorest family member.

I was wondering if you were aware of the books printed by Mary and William Demorest in 1938 (supplements in 1942 and 1944) listing every Demorest in the US and Canada. I do not have the books and so cannot look up any thing for you but the LDS Church has microfilms of them. That is where I found a great deal of info on the family.

Their history of the Demorest family is very, VERY extensive and very well done.

Unfortunately the one Demorest I am looking for is not in there but the family he lived with is. They came down from Ontario, Canada in 1892. The one I need to find is Aleck Demorest who lived with John Gilbert Demorest in Waukegan, Ill and Necedah, Wisconsin.

Good luck in your search. C. Richards

My Grandfather always said he was French Canadian, His father's name was John J DeMorest and he was born about 1892. He lived in New York. I have also noticed that DeMorest is pronouced differently and was wondering how most pronouce it. We say De-More-ist, or De- Marr-ist. If anyone knows of John, please let me know. I think he may of lived near a race track in upstate NY(possibly Sarotoga) But in 1930 he was living in Queens NY.
