The town in Greece you refer to is near Tripoli and is now called Nestani. Ironically, my mother's family is from there. The Demoses in my family is from my paternal grandmother, whose maiden name was Eleni. Her parents were Kosta and Evaggelia Demos. Kosta was widowed before he married Evaggelia. He had a son Nikolaos (my grandmother's half-brother). They were all from Kollines, which is between Tripoli and Sparta. Nikolaos had moved to Athens and had 2 daughters, which we are trying to find. One was named Irene. Will post more info with more Demos connections as I get them.

Let's end botching of the Demos family thread

Greetings Demos descendant,

If you are a descendant of the Demos family, I hope to debunk an earlier thread posted on this website. My name is Litsa Demos. My great-grandfather was George Demos, born approximately 1880s in the village. My grandfather was Chris Demos, approximately 1910, also in the village. My father was Philip Demos, 1946. I was born in Toronto, Canada.

The Demos family, originally spelled NTEMOS in Greek, was later changed to the letter Delta in the Greek alphabet in our village. Evidence of Demos ancestry in Greece, from this family blood line, dates to the 1600s in the village of Pikerni. Commencing approximately 1400s, under Ottoman rule, there was a Pasha in the administrative centre of Arcadia, the township of Tripolis. A Pasha was a Turkish title for identifying military and civil officers presiding over geographic areas during Ottoman rule.

The township of Tripolis was burned and rebuilt in the 1800s. There are no decent records of our ancestry pre-1600s other than historical accounts and tombs.

One thing we know about the village of Pikerni, is that since most of the inhabitants faced common challenges (poverty, illness, political adversity) they began migrating to the U.S., Canada, Australia and other popular areas. This happened in waves, since, for the most part, our descendants were typically male breadwinners who frequently returned to Greece once they improved their financial standing in the world.

During the 1950s-1960s the village of Pikerni was occupied by several hundred families, coffee shops, taverna, two fountains (ANO and KATO VRISI), an elementary school, etc.. common to rural Arcadia at the time. Was Pikerni a more bustling place? No. Our relatives would marry inside or outside the village, moving in or out. Many migrated to the United States. The village declined as more and more waves of migrants from generation-to-generation left between 1870s to 1970s.

Homes have been constantly devastated by earthquakes. Many of the ancestral homes do not exist or have been reduced to rubble. Pikerni has not attracted local development or interest from descendants. There are some remaining inhabitants today using their land for livestock and farming purposes. Nevertheless, our Greek relatives do live in Tripolis and keep our monastery alive. They are well-respected members in Tripolis (population 25000).

I suggest trekking through the village (not much of a trek), cemetary, monastery, abandoned school. You will be eerily fascinated to see the tombs in the cemetary. You will find your descendants resting in the cemetary.

You may also be fascinated with reports of hearing potential spirits at night. According to village legend, there was blood spill during colonial, civil and world war times.

By this point, if you are still reading my post, you are probably related or affiliated with the town and the family. www.tripolis.gr is the authoritative resource for information. If you want to learn about the region, key in Tripolitsa, Dromolitsa in wikipedia, or a reliable search engine. Read the Peloponesian War for information about the ancient area of Mantinea. Pikerni is a short distance from ancient civilization found in Nestani and Kapsa.

Please feel free to contact me at ldemos@hotmail.com

DEMOS, James J. - WY, MT, CA, OR

I am trying to help my sister and her husband trace his DEMOS family. His Grandfather was JAMES J. DEMOS, born
14 April 1887, in Sheridan, Wyoming. We believe that his father's name was also JAMES DEMOS, and that his Grandfather's name was THOMAS DEMOS, both from Greece. I have been unable to locate his Father and Grandfather and their naturalization papers.

JAMES J. DEMOS first married, REBECCA M. JENKINS, on 14 November 1912. They had a son, JAMES ORIN DEMOS, born 5 September 1913, in Billings, Montana. But I believe that James J. Demos returned to Sheridan, Wyoming, after a separation and divorce from Rebecca.

JAMES J. DEMOS married his second wife, VIOLET JENKINS, sister of Rebecca. James and Violet Demos adopted a daughter, LILLY JANE DEMOS, born About 1949.
(It is believed that Lilly Jane's, natural mother or father's name, was Pfieffer and that they may have been from Pennsylvania or Illinois.)

James J. Demos is buried in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, in Sheridan, Wyoming. He died 14 November 1961. I am looking for any information on VIOLET and LILLY JANE DEMOS. It is believed that they moved west, possibly California or Oregon, after the death of James J. Demos, husband and father.

If any one can help with my search, it would be greatly appreciated. My email address is: jdwafford@charter.net
Thank you, hope to hear from someone soon.
